Royals continue Rumble to Playoffs

Prologue
The joys of a late season rescheduled game between traditional powerhouses.  Its yet another trip to Hopkins (31st game there this year) as the #6AAAA Royals host #1A Minneapolis North.  Nice crowd on hand but I expected a very packed house which didn't happen.   The wheat bun for the hot dog is starting to gain some respect with me.  As its a big game, we get none other than The Reverend leading the crew.  Once again he was in fine form.  Great old time music on the public address along with the previous public address guy.

Game Time:
Fast pace and not much defense in this one.  Simon Wright gets off to a super hot start with 3 triples and a pair of buckets.  That's 13 of the 1st 15 Hopkins points and the Royals lead 15-7 at 14:26.  Isaac Johnson was also hot for North.  He goes coast to coast for 2 and buries a triple of his own.  The 12-2 North run gives the Polars their 1st lead of the night.  19-17 North at 11:35.  Joe Hedstrom with back to back hoops for Hopkins before he sits with his 2nd foul at the 7:27 mark.  Hopkins by 3.  Odell Wilson then takes over inside with Hedstrom sitting.  He scores 13 points the rest of the half as Hopkins has no answer for him.  Simon Wright stays hot with 2 more 3s.  North scores 8 of the last 10 of the half to take the momentum to the break.  51-48 Hopkins at halftime.

Hopkins comes out in the 2nd half playing matchup zone which is an incredibly rare sight.  Wright converts a BLOB. Anthony Davis scores.  Ish El-Amin with a block that leads to a Hedstrom putback.  Then its El-Amin behind the back to Hedstrom for a dunk.  But Hopkins wants the immediate MoKiller timeout to get out of the zone.  65-56 Hopkins with 13:32 to play.  Hopkins wasn't rebounding well on the defensive side either.  Zeke Nnaji and Hedstrom trade hi low buckets to keep the lead at 8.  But the dynamic North duo isn't done.  Isaac Johnson for 3 and Wilson scores to force another Hopkins timeout as the lead is down to 3.

The lead is 6 with 8:15 left and Simon Wright picks up his 4th foul.  Isaac Johnson with a free throw and a nice step thru jumper plus a Nasir El-Amin hoop.  Hopkins clinging to a 72-71 lead with 6:59 left and out of sorts on offense.  Timeout Hopkins. Then the coaching move of the game.  Coach Ken Novak takes a long look at Wright on the bench and decides to keep him there.  Senior Darryl Mayfield comes off the bench after not playing all night  After Ish El-Amin goes for 3 and an Isaac Johnson reverse, its Mayfield with a cold blooded 3.  Isaac Johnson 2 freebies countered by an Ish El-Amin jumper.  Tayler Johnson drives and scores and North takes time down 3 with 4:40 left.

Wright stays on the bench.  Mayfield gets the ball reversal and buries another 3.  Hedstrom with 2 free throws and a hoop around a Wilson putback.  Nnaji with a block that Anthony Davis converts.  Wright finally comes back in at 2:20 as there wasn't a stoppage.  But North won't go away.  Wilson seals for 2 on a BLOB that they've run all year.  Isaac Johnson converts a turnover with 1:55 left and its down to 6.  But Mayfield isn't done, he bangs home another 3 with 1:40 left oh my!  Hopkins is up 9 and that should be a dagger.

But Hopkins doesn't close it out like one would expect.  Wilson with 2 easy buckets and Isaac Johnson with an easy hoop.  Simon Wright makes 1 of 2 free throws and Tayler Johnson counters with a 3.  Hopkins then turns it over and all of a sudden North has the ball back down 3 with about 15 seconds left.  But the Polars are out of timeouts.  Isaac Johnson gets 1 good look and can't convert.  But Simon Wright misses a front end and North has 1 last chance.  Isaac Johnson's half court 3 at the horn is no good.  Hopkins hangs on to win 95-92.

Post Game
Isaac Johnson leads Minneapolis North with 33 points.  He made 4 3s.  Odell Wilson was a beast inside with 30 points.  Jaquan Sanders-Smith adds 11 points.  North fought hard but in the end didn't have enough.  North finishes the regular season 24-2 with the only losses to Apple Valley in the opener and Hopkins in the finale.  They'll host Central in the Twin Cities game on Saturday.  Then they'll open section 4A as the top seed a week from Thursday.

Simon Wright scores 22 of his team high 27 points in the 1st half for Hopkins.  All 5 starters reach double figures.  Joe Hedstrom 17, Ish El-Amin 15, Zeke Nnaji 11, Anthony Davis 10.  But it was the 9 down the stretch from reserve Darryl Mayfield that made all the difference.  Hopkins couldn't defend Wilson inside but North had no good answer for the hi low action of Hedstrom and Nnaji.   Hopkins is now 20-5 overall.  They'll finish the regular season hosting archrival Minnetonka on Friday.  In my humble opinion, a win there would give Hopkins the top seed in section 6AAAA.

Despite the number of points scored, both teams will still take away concerns with their shot selection.  Hopkins had issues keeping North off the offensive glass as well.  North's halfcourt execution will be looked at as well but in a game of this pace it didn't really matter.

Seeing Orange

Prologue
A quiet Monday night on the schedule provides a section 6AAAA matchup.  The color is orange for Robbinsdale Cooper at Minneapolis Washburn.  In a blasphemous moment, I don't do the world famous all-beef hot dog but I did have a can of Sprite.  On the whistle, we have The Rev.  Needless to say he was in full showtime form tonight.  Cooper playing without the injured Beijan Newbern.

Game Time:
The offenses got off to a very slow start.  Nate Hill with a triple to open the game and a spin for 2 more for Cooper.  Terrell Adams counters that with triple of his own and a drive.  7 all just before the 11 minute mark.  Then the Washburn bench would take over.  They score 18 points in a 20-5 run to break the game open.  Albert Demmings with 8 of those as he controlled the paint.  27-12 Washburn with 3:50 left in the half.  Washburn would take a 29-18 lead to the half.  The bench scored 20 of the 29 Washburn points.

The offenses continue to struggle in the 2nd half.  35-26 Washburn at the 10:44 mark when Demmings makes his 1st appearance of the 2nd half.  Washburn extends the lead to 41-28 with a Cortez Adams hoop and conversion of 2 free throws off a turnover.  Cooper would extend the defense fullcourt and it would rattle the Millers.  Cooper would use that to go on a 14-0 run.  Nate Hill with a steal for 2, a runout for 2 more and he would putback a miss to end the run.  Jalen Miller with a steal for a 3 point play in the run as well.  42-41 Cooper with 6:25 left.  But the Cooper offense can't get a hoop in the next handful of possessions.

Demmings with 2 free throws then a great sequence.  He gets stripped on offense, Cooper can't finish it on their end and Demmings turns it into a 3 point play.  That play looks like a backbreaker.  50-44 Washburn with just under 3 minutes left.  But Cooper isn't done.  Hill with 2 more hoops and Jalen Justice adds a 3.  52-51 Washburn hanging on with 1:36 remaining.  Washburn promptly turns it over but Cooper can't convert.  Then The Rev swallows his whistle on a massive hack going to the rim and blows the out of bounds call.  Cooper has it back but Brandon Charles swats away a putback attempt.  Terrell Adams makes 2 free throws and Cooper misses.  But Cooper gets 1 last chance as they force a 10 second call with 4.1 left.  Washburn had used up their last timeout so they didn't have one to save possession here.  Hill's last ditch attempt is off the board and no good.  Washburn wins 54-51.

Post Game
Nate Hill leads Cooper with 15 points.  Soph guard Jalen Miller adds 11 points off the Hawks bench.  But without Beijan Newbern to create offense, Cooper couldn't get much going.  Cooper falls to 12-10 overall.  They have tough games at St. Louis Park and at Chaska this week.  It will be interesting to see where Cooper falls to in the 6AAAA seeding.  If they lose out, it wouldn't be out of the question to see them in the 6 seed and a 1st round rivalry game vs Armstrong.

Washburn improves to 14-10 overall, 7-7 in the Minneapolis City.  Albert Demmings leads the Millers with 15 points coming off the bench.  Terrell Adams adds 11 points.  Washburn's bench scores 31 of the 54 points.  I was surprised we didn't see more of them.  Particularly Demmings who sat for more than the 1st 7 minutes of the 2nd half after the great 1st half.  I was surprised how rattled they got by Cooper's pressure.  Their guards matchup well with Cooper so I didn't expect that as a problem.  This win would normally be huge in terms of head to head for section seeding but a close loss on the road without your best player might be enough to tilt the scales back to body of work.  Due to the head to head loss to St. Louis Park and finish in the Minneapolis City, I see Washburn ending up as the 5 or 6 seed.

Hornets sting the Tigers

Prologue
The city tour continues with a single Saturday night game. Its Edina visiting Minneapolis South.  Solid walking taco on the menu.  Coke washes it down.  Former North coach Brett McNeil (now the South AD) having to deal with kids triggering the fire alarm via back doors.  Quality old music on the PA during timeouts.  That includes this TV hit.

Song of the Day: John Sebastian - Welcome Back  (Welcome Back Kotter theme)

Number of Teams I've Seen: 154 (53 courts + 5 online).  26 out of state, 13 girls

Beverage Ticker: 1167.6 ounces (12975 Calories)
96 days, 129 games (124 in person), 2 scrimmages added on
  • Pepsi: 320.9 ounces (3760 calories)
  • Coke: 300 ounces (3340 calories)

  • A&W Root Beer : 28.9 ounces (410 calories)
  • Mug Root Beer: 40 ounces (520 calories)

  • Orange Gatorade: 20 ounces (140 calories)
Hot Dog Ticker: 20
Pizza Ticker: 12
Walking Taco Ticker:10

Game Time:
Its a good start for Minneapolis South.  Demetrius Gladney with a nice back cut for a layup to open the scoring.  He then knocks down a jumper and scores on an inbounds.  14-8 South at 10:30 and Edina calls a timeout.  Coach Joe Burger (I'll get that spelling right) not happy with his crew as he's already gone to a 2nd group of 5.  Cossy Kowouto with a nice post move inside.  Edina for 3 countered by frosh Curtis Jones for 3.  22-13 Tigers at the 7:10 mark.  Edina gets 3 starters back on the floor to go with Walt McGrory right after that.  A long stretch of no dead balls.

Then its all Edina.  Anders Nelson scores and buries a 3 off an Edina offensive rebound.  He grabs his own miss for a free throw.  He'll add another bucket, flare for 3 and another bomb in transition for 8 quick ones in a row.  He opens the 2nd half with a backdoor layup and another putback for a 3 point play.  Nelson scores 19 points of the first 26 in a 28-4 run that crosses halftime.  That takes Edina from 9 down to 15 up just after halftime.  Edina coasts from there to a 94-71 win.

Post Game
Kevin Holler with all 13 of his points in the 2nd half to lead South.  Freshman Curtis Jones with 4 3s and 12 points as well.  South finishes their regular season 5-21 overall, 5-9 (6th) in the Minneapolis City.  They will open the 6AAAA playoffs on March 8th as the 8 seed.  That means a trip to Wayzata or Hopkins in the first round.  Hopkins could make a major statement for that top seed with a home win over Minneapolis North on Tuesday.  This section is always an interesting coaches vote.

Anders Nelson with 28 points to lead Edina.  He scored 19 of those in the big run that ultimately put the game out of reach.  Center Matt Hofrenning off the bench with 21 of his 25 in the 2nd half.  He was working inside and knocking down foul line jumpers.  Walt McGrory had a cold night from the field.  He finished with 12 points and 6 assists on my sheet.  Edina improves to 16-8 on the season.  They finish the regular season with trips to Minneapolis Southwest and Wayzata next week.  The Hornets are still in a battle with Eden Prairie for 3rd in the Lake with Edina having lost both meetings badly.

As to section, it will be very interesting to see.  Chaska looks like they should be the 1 seed regardless of coaches vote or QRF.  Edina has a neutral site win over Chaska but that was without Andrew Kallman.  Jefferson has a tight win over Edina and a split with Chaska for the Metro West title (most likely).  Eden Prairie has lost 5 of 6 but they have 2 wins over Edina and a win over Jefferson.  They end at Woodbury and at De La Salle.  Prior Lake with 2 wins to finish up could steal a 4 seed based on record if they go QRF.  Minnetonka hosts Wayzata and visits Hopkins to end their regular season.  Prior Lake and Minnetonka are teams I would not want to see as 5 and 6 seeds.  Its going to be a very tough section.

A busy City week

So late nights and blowouts have kept me offline for a couple of days so let's get caught up.

Wednesday: Breck 85 Minneapolis Edison 52
Walking taco was just the beef and nacho cheese sauce on top.  Simple and different, but a little heavy on the nacho cheese (especially considering we're using nacho cheese Doritos).  As to the game itself, nothing in doubt here.  Edison hung around for about 7 minutes.  David Roddy with a solid night of 17 points, 12 boards, 5 assists and 3 blocks on my sheet.  Freshman wing Kerwin Walton with 28 points.

Thursday: Minnehaha doubleheader
This was a boys girls doubleheader with the Mayer Lutheran girls and Columbia Heights boys.  The boys JV goes overtime.  Then a pair of long varsity games means a 10 PM exit.   High profile officials as The Scribe works the girls game then an all-time classic pairing of The Rev and Hollywood for the boys game.  But its was the 3rd guy in that boys game who was the star of the show.  47 fouls and a combined free throw attempts.  Deaundra Roberson with 20 of his 33 points in the 1st half carrying the Heights offense.  Jalen Suggs would lead Minnehaha with 28 points and a mitt full of assists.  JaVonni Bickham with a double double of 22 and 12 on my sheet.  Lorenzo Smith adds 21.  Redhawks played without freshman wing Kaden Johnson.  The teams combine for 1 field goal from their main bench guys.  Minnehaha pulls away to win 88-69.

Friday: Central 88 Como Park 77
Senior night at Como Park so 5 senior Cougars start the game.  That allows Central to jump out to a quick lead.  Central would be up double figures in the 2nd half but Como Park would cut that margin to 3 and have the ball.  They couldn't convert.  Central spreads the floor the last 7 minute and does a good enough job breaking down traps and getting layups.  Re'Twan Balenger with 4 late free throws to seal it.  He finishes with 20 points.  Soph forward Daveonte Davis continues to play well with 25 points to lead Central.  Kyrin Woodard scores 20 of his 28 in the 2nd half to lead Como Park almost all the way back.  Trey Clark finishes with 19 points.  Central clinches a tie for the St. Paul City title and can win it outright with a win at Humboldt on Tuesday.

Patriots take out Tigers

Prologue
Czar starts a round of the Minneapolis city area tonight.  Its a section 6AAA battle with #6AAA Delano visiting Minneapolis Patrick Henry.  Henry with the drum line in the house.  A reminder of the good old days at MTS.  That's appropriate since coach Jeremy Miller used to work and coach there.  I liked the 1 official tonight who could have given Why Ricky Why a lesson in bench management.  Very calm demeanor and took time to talk to both coaches.  The footlong hot dog out the bun and Sprite on the concessions menu.  Fun bit in the JV game where Henry got up 4-0 in the 1st 2 minutes and then held the ball against the Delano 2-3 zone.

Number of Teams I've Seen: 150 (50 courts + 5 online).  26 out of state, 11 girls

Game Time:
Delano starts strong with Calvin Wishart making 2 3s around a Derek Techam 3.  9-4 Tigers at 14:20.  But the rest of the night is mostly Henry.  Soph Rashaud Rollins 2 bombs.  Jordan Lynn follows that with 2 hoops and 2 of 3 free throws.  Dimitri Sanner-Robinson comes off the Patriots bench to add 2 buckets near the end of the big run.  That run is 22-3 in about 4 minutes.  It puts Henry on top 26-12 inside the 10 minute mark.  Lefty Dylan Gilmer off the Delano bench with a 3 and a pair of free throws.  That bookends a 10-2 Delano run and they're down 28-22 at 7:24.  Devontaye Spates with 3 hoops off the Henry bench.  Henry would grow the lead back to 15 before a pair of Delano triples.  45-34 Patrick Henry at the half.

Delano doesn't cut into that lead until a Nick Cayler 3 and Wishart triple cut the margin to 10 with 11 minutes left.  But the quick guards for Henry were too much.  Terrell Smith for 2 then Lynn with 2 hoops around a critical pair of missed front ends by the Tigers.  That keeps the lead at 16 inside of 9 minutes left.  Wishart would pick up his offense late.  His 4 free throws and a triple combine with a Keegan O'Neill 3 to cut the lead to 70-61 with 4:20 left.  But Delano can't get any closer than that.  They can't convert on some chances.  Plus they have to extend which allowed Henry a couple of easy hoops.  Henry goes on to the 87-77 win.

Post Game
Calvin Wishart leads Delano with 23 points.  He also added 7 rebounds on my sheet.  Dylan Gilmer with 13 off the bench.  Derek Techum all 12 of his points in the 1st half.  Keegan O'Neill with 10.  Delano was just dead all night.  They got outhustled for rebounds and loose balls, didn't get great shots and didn't have a fire to them.  They are at Orono on Thursday in a game that will likely determine who the 2 seed is in 6AAA.  That's not only means a much easier 1st round game but it also means hosting the section semifinal game.  Delano an interesting team to watch in that bracket as they allow the most PPG but also are far and away the highest scoring team in the section.

Jordan Lynn leads Henry with 24 points.  Lamar Wood adds 17.  Rashaud Rollins with 12 points as he fills the spot of Savion Scott.  Devontaye Spates adds 12 off the bench.  Terell Smith with 10.  Henry's guards much too quick for Delano to handle.  Big win for Henry to keep home court hopes alive in the 1st round.  The Patriots are now 17-7 overall and finished 12-2 in the Minneapolis City.  I think that this win should seal up the 4 seed.  I think they matchup favorably with either Waconia or Benilde-St. Margaret's in that game.  They host section rival Blake on Thursday before a trip to Moorhead on Saturday to end the regular season.

2017 Community Clash Thoughts

Its the final Breakdown Sports USA event of the season as the Community Clash visits Hopkins.  That means I'm up to 1 in every 4 games I've seen being in that gym.  A nice popurri of teams to be seen as metro teams I follow took on non-metro teams that I don't follow.  That made for a fun day.  Another wheat bun hot dog takes care of lunch.  Then leftover Papa John's for dinner.  Coke takes care of the daily beverage needs.

Game 1:  Owatonna vs Park Center
Owatonna's offense would struggle early scoring only 1 field goal in the 9 minutes.  That was off a turnover.  Park Center would get out in transition and go up by 12.  Owatonna fought foul trouble as well in the first half.  Owatonna's defense would clamp down and hold Park Center to 1 field goal in over 7 minutes late in the half.  That would cut the margin to 5.

Owatonna would rally to take the lead and Park Center would go back up by 6.  Dalton Kubista for 3 to cut the PC lead to 2.  Then Jarius Cook with a putback and a dunk to keep the Pirates up 6.  Kubista again for 3 and banks in another 3 and gets fouled for a 4 point play.  Huskies up 51-50 with just over 3 minutes left. Owatonna would get a great open BLOB look at the buzzer in regulation but missed it.

In the overtime, Derrick Ogechi would make 6-6 FTs in the last 30 seconds to close it out.  Park Center wins 66-61 in OT.  Dalton Kubista didn't shoot it well but ended up with 23 points and 4 3s to lead all scorers.  Great balance from Park Center. Derrick Ogechi with 16 to lead the Pirates.  Jarius Cook and Losini Kamara added 13 each.  Kamara missed 7 of his last 8 free throws in a major shock.

Game 2: Forest Lake vs Moorhead
I picked this one up in the 2nd half and not much to see.  Forest Lake was up 20 at the break and opened the 2nd half on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 30.  Forest Lake's 4 bench guys (they only dressed 9) saw a ton of time due to that.  Moorhead did cut the lead to 18 which forced the starters back in.  But the outcome was never in doubt.  Forest Lake wins 100-73.  Jake Larson with 20 of his 26 in the 1st half.  Soph John Schrader with 12 of his 16 in the 1st half.  Lefty Drew Hagen is a big point guard for Moorhead.  The freshman was the leading scorer for the Spuds with 16.  Moorhead playing only 1 senior while starting 2 sophomores and Hagen.

Game 3: Woodbury at #6 Hopkins
Jake West would keep Woodbury in this one in the 1st half with 15 points.  Hopkins would use an 8-0 run later in the half to take a 40-35 halftime lead.  Hopkins would pull away in the 2nd half thanks to a 18-6 spurt.  Anthony Davis and Zeke Nnaji with 6 points each in that spurt.  Nnaji using his size advantage to have a big 2nd half.  Davis and Nnaji combine for 26 of their 34 in the 2nd half.  Hopkins wins 89-67.  Jake West 22 and Michael Jones 21 to lead Woodbury.  Hopkins ends with 4 starters at 16 points or more.  Anthony Davis 16, Simon Wright 17, Zeke Nnaji 18 and Ish El-Amin leads with 22 (14 2nd half).  Just too much firepower for Hopkins.

Game 4: Cretin-Derham Hall vs #1AAAA Iowa City West (IA)
This was the showcase game of the day.  The appeal was Gopher commit Daniel Oturu vs Iowa commit Connor McCaffery.  CDH would stretch a 2 point lead to 10 at the half.  Then in the 2nd half CDH would extend that lead to 20.  The final was a 85-72 CDH win but it wasn't that close.  Too much Daniel Oturu as he finishes with 29 points and 14 rebounds.  Ryan Larson would jet his way to 18 points.  Connor McCaffery with 22 points and 6 rebounds to lead Iowa City West.  Patrick McCaffery with 12 points.  But they didn't have much help.

Game 5: Chaska vs St. Michael-Albertville
Due to the late game, I saw the 1st half and the last minute of the game.   This was the easy Chaska win that many expected.  STMA would grind their way to a 2 point lead at the half.  Then STMA would score to tie and have the ball in the last minute to win.  After a turnover, it was Myles Hanson going 1 on 1 out of 4 flat.  A tough foul call on his drive with 2.4 left and Hanson would make 1 of 2 to win it.  Chaska hangs on to win 63-62.  Hanson would finish with 18 points.  Cole Nicholson with a big 2nd half of 15 points to finish with 21.  Nasty last 17 days of the regular season for STMA.  At Maple Grove, Buffalo and Monticello at home, Chaska (neutral) then 4 on the road vs Edina, Rogers, Duluth East and Big Lake.

Game 6: Shakopee vs Pequot Lakes
Shakopee playing 3 freshmen as they reload for the future.  The Sabers would have no problems in this one as they win 64-48.  Forward Jacob Adelman would score 12 straight in the 1st half as the Sabers would pull away.  He finished with 19 points off the Shakopee bench.  Addison Leininger would add 11 points.  Gage Westlund would lead Pequot Lakes with 12 points.

Royals get their revenge

Prologue
To Hopkins to see the #6AAAA Royals host #5AAAA Wayzata.  The 1st meeting between these teams was a 81-55 Wayzata blowout win just over a month ago.  But Hopkins just avenged an earlier loss to Edina so would that script hold here?  Our 3 man crew was a concern before the tip and both coaches were very unhappy at various points.  Fun crowd on hand with the Hopkins band.  When the Dominos delivery car pulls up and its not for the concession stand, its a let down.  But the hot dog is solid and Coke to take care of it.

Game Time:
Jacob Beeninga and Ryan Lindberg with early 3s for Wayzata.  Center Joe Hedstrom with 2 chances at 3 point plays for Hopkins.  He converts the 1st and misses the 2nd to end a 7-0 Hopkins run.  15-10 Royals 6 minutes in.  Wayzata keeps bombing away.  Lindberg again off a BLOB and Drew Galinson in transition.  After a Hopkins hoop, its Gavin Baumgartner with 8 straight Trojans points in a span of 35 seconds.  That included a triple, a coast to coast venture and then converting a turnover into another triple.  The 14-4 run puts Wayzata up by 5.  Lindberg with another bomb off an offensive board with a minute left in the half.  37-30 Wayzata at the break.  The Trojans make 9 3s in the half.  They outscore Hopkins 19-7 over the last 6+ minutes of the half.

Galinson 2 more triples.  Ish El-Amin counters with 7 points in a 10-0 Hopkins run.  Beeninga fouled on a 3 and makes all 3 before yet another Galinson 3.  53-46 Wayzata with 8:56 left.  Hopkins coach Ken Novak almost gets a T at the timeout.  El-Amin 2 free throws and then a vicious swat of a Trojans lob into the 8th row.  Frosh Blaise Beauchamp with a floater and a 3.  Then back to back turnovers for Hopkins layups.  11-0 Hopkins run to take a 57-53 lead with under 6 minutes to play.

Wayzata would rally behind a Beeninga triple and pair of free throws to take a 60-59 lead with 3:46 left.  A jump ball goes to Hopkins with 3:11 left.  They run offense for a minute before Hedstrom is fouled and makes both ends of the bonus.  Then a turnover for an El-Amin layup.  Another turnover for the Trojans and Anthony Davis converts that vs a 1-3-1 trap..  The rest is free throws and some Brian Schnettler displeasure with no whistle for over and back.   Hopkins wins 70-62.

Post Game:
Ryan Lindberg leads the way for Wayzata with 18 poitns and 4 triples.  Drew Galinson 5 threes and 15 points.  Gavin Baumgartner 12 points but 8 of them in that 35 second run in the 1st half.  Jacob Beeninga also in double figures with 11.  I liked that Wayzata pulled out some looks very much like what Edina does on offense to space the floor and penetrate.  Once Hopkins clamped down on the 3 point line, offense was tough.  Wayzata only shoots 5 free throws (Beeninga goes 5-5).

Ish El-Amin and Blaise Beauchamp each score 16 points to lead Hopkins.  24 of those 32 points coming in the 2nd half.  El-Amin turned his game up another notch in the 2nd half.  Simon Wright very active rebounding to go along with his 14 points.  Joe Hedstrom chips in with 11.  Zeke Nnaji left the game early in the 2nd half with a cut and didn't return.  But when Nnaji and Hedstrom were in the game together, Hopkins went to something that wasn't quite high low or lane-lane mover blocker, but it had the posts working together top and bottom with the guards filling the wings.  Good stuff.  With a couple exceptions, the 2nd half defense of the 3 point line was much much better than the 1st.

So the teams are now tied on top of the Lake Conference standings at 4-2.  Hopkins is 17-5 overall while Wayzata is 19-3 overall.  If its coaches seed then its very interesting for Hopkins to be the top seed.  Wayzata is currently a landslide winner for the top spot if its QRF but I have it much closer than that in the CzarPI.  The win is also big as Armstrong lost to Maple Grove tonight and still has to go to Champlin Park.  That definitely helps the Royals case for the 2nd seed.

A Week of Blue

Game info here has been quiet this week so let's get caught up on what I've seen.  My games have had a shade of blue attached to them.  So here goes.

Monday: Trinity at Mounds Park Academy
No problems for Trinity in this one as they win 60-29.  Interesting action from Mounds Park Academy though.  They would go horns with the school's all-time scoring leader at the point, Brendan Connolly.  Then the interesting part is that they would go corner action out of it but have the point guard follow under the post instead of going over the top.  That gave a better screening angle.  Connolly set that screen 3 times early and got wide open 3s stepping out after setting it.  Another round of the magnificent Pulled Pork meal deal always makes the trip worth it.

Tuesday: Chaska at Bloomington Jefferson
This one was for the top spot in the Metro West.  Pizza, popcorn and Red Gatorade (no Pepsi available sadly) for the meal deal.  But my Gatorade was mostly frozen.  Chaska would survive a very ugly first half and be tied at the break.  Then the 2nd half, they go 22-27 from the charity stripe vs 2-2 for Jefferson.  That makes up for only making 5 field goals in that half.  Myles Hanson with 20 of his 24 in the 2nd half (14-15 FTs).  He also added 11 rebounds.  He put the game away with 7 straight points when the lead was 3.  The irony of this game is a Jefferson parent wondering why I limited my usual comments about their methodical style while their players are blowing me up online.  The teams are now tied on top of the Metro West standings.  Jefferson sees a 9 game winning streak snapped.  Chaska has now won 7 straight.  They could meet again in the 2AAAA section playoffs.  Chaska looks to have the inside track to the 1 seed there.

Wednesday: Cooper at #2AAAA Maple Grove
Due to a late night of the real world, I had to watch this one online on mute.  But still no doubt about Brad Davison going absolutely nuts.  He goes off for a school record 43.  Tywhon Pickford adds 32 as Maple Grove wins 93-85.  Both teams not able to get stops as the lane looked like an interstate highway.  Cooper with limited size options but they have athletic guards and a scorer in Beijan Newbern.  He ended up with 28.  The Hawks made noise in the tourney last year and have the same tools to do it again.  Most of these guys are back next year too.

Thursday: Prairie Seeds at #7AAA Columbia Heights
Always have to get the Mug Root Beer on the hill.  No Willie Braziel for the game.  He was tossed on Tuesday vs De La Salle.   By a member of the JMOA to boot, the horror.  Prairie Seeds would take the early lead and hold it all the way until 27-22 with about 6 minutes left in the 1st half.  The story of this game would take over.  That's soph Jarvis Wright for Columbia Heights.  He comes off the bench and scores 12 straight Hylanders points.  Add in Lycans post AJ Abara sitting with 2 fouls and the moment totally shifts.  Heights goes from 5 down to 10 up at the half.

Abara with 2 hoops and Brian Robinson finishes an 11-2 Lycans run with 2 free throws.  61-56 Heights with 10:32 left.  But Wright is back in the game.  He buries a kickout for 3, then behind the back to Christian Kelly for a layup.  Then a slick pass to Wendell Matthews for 2 free throws.  Brian and Jamar Robinson both have to sit with 4 fouls.  Daveon Gibson with a 3 for Prairie Seeds as they try to hang around down 6.  But Wright adds 2 more bombs and a score in the post.  He had the answer for any Prairie Seeds run.  Columbia Heights wins 97-87.  Soph Jarvis Wright off the Columbia Heights bench with 31 points and 7 bombs to lead all scorers.  Wendell Matthews adds 24.  Quentin Hardrict with 19.  Daveon Gibson with 6 3s and 26 points to try to keep Prairie Seeds close.  AJ Abara with 17 of his 23 in the 2nd half.  Lycans star guard Brian Robinson with 16 but only 1 field goal in the 2nd half.

The week of blue concludes with 2 trips to Hopkins

New award for top senior basketball player announced.

It was a busy day in the Minnesota basketball community on Monday.

First, I was part of a KSTP story on the whole Mr Basketball comments.  A link to that can be found here.  Nothing new there.  Just the same things that Brooklyn Center coach Matt McCollister and I have already gone over.  Ken Lien declined to say anything which wasn't necessarily a bad idea but it is still telling.  What I'm wondering is when will the members of the committee come out and remove themselves from this mess?  They've been incredibly quiet.  There are no indications that Ken will step away.  That makes sense since he's demonstrated no understanding of his actions or remorse for them.  Since he owns the award I'm expecting that he'll stay.  I hope that he would realize the damage that has been done and that the award is bigger than him and move it to someone else who can carry the mantle.  That way our top player each year can be proudly called "Mr Basketball" like the top players around the nation

Speaking of other awards, the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association later announced the McDonald Award.  Its named for legendary Chisholm coach Bob McDonald.  Starting with the 2017-18 season, it will be given to the senior basketball player of the year.  The criteria for it are patterned after the Wooden award which is the college equivalent for the nation's top player.  A great move by the BCA assuming they get a good committee of coaches from around the state to do it.  Let's hope that this award is a worthy replacement to our current award.  In other states it seems to work.  My hope is that they use the forum of the state tournament to announce the winner which is what other states like Wisconsin do.

Time for a Mr Basketball change

This week Mr. Basketball committee chairman Ken Lien made news.  He made a twitter statement that caused Henry Sibley head coach John Carrier to come out and denounce him.

The original comments
The Mr Basketball Reply

Whether you agree with coach Carrier's position or not, I think we can all respect him taking a stand for what he believes  I think its important to understand that isn't about political views or political correctness.  As a public figure, it is a harsh reality that you are held to a higher standard of conduct.

I've read the Star Tribune apology plus the original response.  Ken was given fair and ample opportunity to defend himself but Star Tribune writer Jim Paulson didn't really question him on his comments.  Here are some questions I had as I read it with passages from the apology article quoted.

Lien -  "I've never created anything negative",
Paulson - "most of his offending tweets are either retweets or responses to other posts"

Czar's Thoughts:
So just because passed along a racist remark that's OK and doesn't mean your racist?  This is a totally ridiculous position.  Sounds like something a kid would say in school. I did it but it was his idea.

Retweeting or replying to racist commentary with racism is OK?

Lien - "But its not as if I've hated anyone"

Czar's Thoughts:
Tweeting that Muslims should be thrown out of the country is not hating someone?  If that isn't hate, then please explain what it is.

Paulson - "...his social media faux pas".

Czar's Thoughts :
This part of the article made me mad.  Doing something once is a faux pas.  This was clearly NOT a 1 time event as demonstrated by the screenshots shown in this GopherHole forum thread.  John made it crystal clear that it wasn't just 1 tweet that caused his reaction.  I'm very disappointed that Jim Paulson chose to express it in that manner.  Its a repeated expression of racism over time that has our basketball community so upset.

Lien - "I think my reputation and integrity has been good.  I don't take my position as Chairman and Owner of Mr. Basketball lightly".
Czar's Thoughts:
Personal items were continuously from a business account including hot button political content.
Vulgar language was used on the business account
The previously posted apology was deleted
The reputation of the award has been seriously tarnished by this.

Conclusions:Based on all of this I draw the following conclusions

1) The gravity of the actions is not understood.
2) There is remorse for having to answer for this with the hope that it just goes away.
3) There is not remorse for the hateful tweets and no accepting of responsibility for posting them.  This is demonstrated by making the excuse that it was another person's idea and defending the hateful ideas when questioned.
4)  This was not a 1 time mistake.  This was repeated hateful behavior.
5) A line has been crossed that is impossible to ignore.  This is especially true as the award deals directly with minorities.  Political views and political correctness can be forgiven, repeated racism cannot.  As Jabbar Washington said in response to this, The Damage Has Been Done

Ken, you have embarrassed yourself, your committee, our basketball community and most important of all, the award itself.  As coach Matt McCollister so accurately said, the award has a special meaning and a national meaning.  It deserves better than this.  You clearly do not understand the gravity of your actions and have not shown true contrition.  A leopard does not change its spots and you have shown your spots.  If your integrity is good and you don't take your position lightly, then there's only 1 reasonable conclusion that can be drawn.
I hope you do the right thing and step away immediately.

A walkable quadruple header

Its a fun Saturday of 4 games (1 girls so we skip that here) as everything is at or within walking distance of Dacha De Czar.   Walking taco and Dominos pizza at a separate stand on the island.  That will work.  Plenty of Pepsi and cushy seats for me as well.

Baldwin-Woodville with a very young squad of 5 sophs and a freshman in their rotation.  Their zone defenses no match for the hot shooting of the Mustangs.  Mounds View knocks down 10 3s in the 1st half and 14 for the game.  Nick McMillan with 5 of those to lead the way with 16 points, all in the 1st half.  Brian Stone adds 14 from his forward spot and made an impact at the top of the Mounds View 1-3-1.  But it was another odd front zone that just wasn't active.  Swing swing, open shot after open shot for both teams vs the zones.  Mounds View rolls 74-45.

Game 2: #2AAA Marshall at #5AAA Orono (online)
Marshall would jump out to a 9 point first half lead.  Plus Orono had Jarvis Thomas saddled with 2 fouls.  Griffin Sage giving Orono a boost off the bench.  That helps cut the Marshall lead to 27-23 at the half.  Orono would take the momentum in the 2nd half as they came out on a 16-5 run.  A Jarvis Thomas tip dunk would extend the lead to 9.  Marshall would make a 3 with 6:30 left to cut the margin to 6.  But they only make 1 more field goal.  Orono goes on to another very good win 57-45.  They also beat #9AAAA New Prague last night.  Max Bjorklund with his 5th straight 20 point game.  He scores 20 to lead all scorers.  Nobody else in double figures.  Jarvis Thomas finishes with 5 points and 7 rebounds.  Marshall effectively physical with him.  Nebraska-Kearney commit Weston Baker Magrath 9 points with 4 blocks.  Mitchell Sueker leads the Tigers with 16 points but shot 5-18 on my sheet.

Game 4: Cretin-Derham Hall at #1AAA De La Salle.
Then the full house on the island for the boys girls doubleheader between CDH and DLS.  Lithgow and Why Ricky Why getting the duty.  Minnesota assistant Ben Johnson looking on as well.  Daniel Oturu patrolling the paint blocking 6 shots in the 1st half.  Goanar Mar was the victim of many of those.  De La Salle gets down 9-1 but goes down on a 12-0 run with Gabe Kalscheur scoring 7 of those.  But they get outscored 14-5 in the last 6+ minutes and only make 1 FG.  Oturu makes 2 free throws and a Jaeden King 3 to end the 1st half.  23-18 CDH at the break.  Oturu with a jumper and dunk to push the lead to 8 early in the 2nd half.  But De La Salle has another run in them.  This one is 14-2 and the Islanders reclaim the lead.  33-29 DLS with 12:40 left.  De La Salle's pressure really bothered CDH trying to get into offense.  Mar with a steal for a dunk and Kalscheur with a steal that becomes 2 more.  Ryan Larson counters with a drive and converts a turnover.  Plus Oturu converts a turnover.  Oturu puts back a miss for a 3 point play.  CDH up by 4 inside 6 to play.  Mar drifts the baseline for a 3 and later makes 2 free throws to tie the game at 51 inside 3 left.

De La Salle takes the lead as Mar finds Dominic Bledsoe on the flare screen for 3.  Then a mad scramble for a rebound out around halfcourt.  Its a big trainwreck as the ball gets tipped to the DLS end and Mar lays it in with 1:02 left for a 5 point Islander lead and that looks to be a dagger.  Especially after Larson draws the dish and run over a defender charge with 52.6 left and fouls out.  But Oturu gets a steal and dunk and then hits a jumper after another Islander turnover.  De La Salle with a 3rd turnover.  CDH takes time with 18 seconds left at halfcourt.  They look to Oturu inside.  He gets 1 touch and then gets it back on the left box.  He got pushed off the block and as he tries to go baseline, he's on the endline with 7 seconds left.  Bledsoe makes 2 free throws which renders Oturu's bucket at the buzzer meaningless.  De La Salle hangs on for a tough 60-59 win.  Daniel Oturu scoring at the rim and facing with jumpers.  Also taking over the paint on defense.  He finishes with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 8 blocks.  Soph Jaeden King with 3 3s and 13 points.  Ryan Larson 12 points.  Goanar Mar with 15 points to lead De La Salle.   He was 5-17 FG on my sheet.  But a surprising number of those were getting blocked (at least 5, mostly by Oturu) attacking the rim.  Gabe Kalscheur adds 14 points, he also struggled from the floor at 5-14 FG.  Dominic Bledsoe and Tyrell Terry chip in with 10 points each to help make up for the cold shooting.
