A pair of games in Moscow proper as I swap the usual Monday night TCAC action for Tuesday night. Then a showdown for 2nd in the Minneapolis City Conference thanks to the real world jumping up and destroying a planned trip to the east side. Bolshevik! The British Empire shall fall for this! But I do get high level entertainment and a walking taco out of it. Never a bad thing. Only lettuce for the walking taco (self administered I might add) but they smother it with the nacho cheese. A rare and very pleasant find.
Tuesday: Cristo Rey 64 Christian Life 49
Cristo Rey playing without PG James Sommer due to a hand injury suffered last week in the win over St. Croix Prep. They jump out to a 22-7 lead at the 10:40 mark thanks to 6 early triples. Erick Burgess with half of those points and 3s. But the rest of the half is sleepy for the Pumas. Jacob Kyllo comes off the Christian Life bench and hits 3 triples of his own in the last 6 minutes to keep the Hawks within 7 at the break. The Hawks start the 2nd half with another 3 and a runout for a layup. 34-30 Cristo Rey with 12:40 left. But the defense for Cristo Rey would awaken again and trigger a 20-4 run that would put the game out of reach. 5 turnovers for 10 points plus a couple of And 1 chances for Erick Burgess during that spurt. 54-34 Cristo Rey with 8:25 left and the rest is cruise control. Erick Burgess leads all scorers with 23 points. Victory George adds 15, Derek Burgess 14 for Cristo Rey. Jacob Kyllo 4 3s and 13 points off the bench to lead Christian Life. Caleb Carlson with 12 and Brian Kindle 10 off the bench for the Hawks. Cristo Rey hoping for some help to move up to the 3rd seed but likely they end up at 4. While they have the tiebreaker with St Croix Prep, they don't have enough time to catch them for the 2 seed in 4AA. Based on a head to head loss to Legacy, Christian Life looking at the 8 seed in section 4A.
Wednesday: Henry 78 Edison 72
Second place in the Minneapolis City on the line in this one. Both teams also trying to hang on to spots in section seeds as well. Tensions high on the evening. Henry coach Jamil Jackson gets 1 T, then a 2nd T for continuing to argue and not sit down. But somehow he's able to get it rescinded by claiming there was no chair for him. So incredibly awful. No chair was setup but he flat refused to sit and was rightfully tossed even if it was by an official who had no business coming over and getting involved to give the 2 techs anyway. Henry sees a comfortable 14 point 1st half lead cut to 7 at the break. Coach Jackson somehow doesn't get another T early in the 2nd half after arguing for more than a full timeout. Once again refs totally unable to administer this. But a Henry assistant will get a T out of the mess.
Meanwhile those free throws add up and Edison is within 2. Then the teams get up and down and play a stretch of minimal defense. Rashaud Rollins with a drive to put Henry up 2 as we go under 14 minutes. Henry does get to the line but no FGs for almost the next 7 minutes. After trailing by 5, its a 13-0 Edison run. Tony Simmons with a kickout 3 and an assist to Jackson Rusnacko for a layup to tie it. Rusnacko grabs his own miss for a free throw and the lead. He'll add another bucket and Tenzin Oden with a right wing triple to end the run. 60-52 Edison inside of 10 minutes left.
Henry makes their comeback with Rollins at the line with 3 FTs. Glentrell Carter converts a turnover and then buries a 3. Rollins converts a turnover and Sam Charles for 3 in transition to put Henry back on top 66-65 with just over 5 minutes left. Carter with a steal for 2 more and 2 more Tommies turnovers result in a tip in and a layup. 72-67 Henry with 2:50 left. Simmons with a tough 2 but Rollins counters that with 2:05 left. Charles runs the floor for another layup and the lead is 7. Edison turns it over and they won't threaten again. A late hard foul causes some hard feelings but somehow we get no technicals out of it which was also crazy. Senior forward Tony Simmons was terrific for Edison with 31 points. Great motor, worked hard inside and even hit a couple of 3s. Jackson Rusnacko adds 11 for the Tommies. Rashaud Rollins leads Henry with 26 points. Glentrell Carter with a nice outing of 16 points. Sam Charles comes up big off the Patriots bench with 14 points. The game took almost 2 hours thanks to 74 FT attempts (I include 4 missed front ends). Edison shoots 16-35 while Henry goes 21-39. Edison finishes the Minneapolis City schedule 8-4. That's more than the 7 league wins they have total in the previous 9 season. Hands down winner of coach of the year award for Edison coach Ahmil Jihad. Edison hanging on for the 3rd seed in section 4AA. The loss hurts but since it a AAA opponent that will help. Next up is a tough back to back with St. Paul Central. Henry closes out the league slate with Roosevelt. Henry's JV's won the JV game to also take 2nd on the JV side from Edison.

Do Hornets see Red?
Prologue
To building #50 of the season as I visit the Haben Center at Benilde-St. Margaret's. Its a non-conference rescheduled neighbor matchup with Edina. 3 recognized but no name officials on the whistles. Chaska getting in double duty scouting and De La Salle looking on for section play as well. Small but reasonable hot dog and some Barq's Root Beer on tonight's calorie counter. So with the Hornets in town, that means its time to buzz the tower.
Song of the Day: Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone
Number of Teams I've Seen: 161 (131 games, 50 buildings, 22 online)
Beverage Ticker: 988.1 ounces (10960 calories)
Hot start from Edina with the unexpected passer being center Jacob Hutson. He assists on 5 of the 1st 6 Hornets hoops. 3 triples included so that leads to 12 points. He adds 2 free throws and a putback as well. Edina 19-5 after his 2 freebies at 11:06. But Benilde will claw their way back. Soph PG Derric Standifer for 3, 3 cuts for buckets and he beats the halftime buzzer as well. Zach Carden adds 4 FTs off the bench. BSM cuts the margin to 1 at the half, 25-24. 2 FGs for Edina in the last 12 minutes of the half. That was after BSM only managed 2 FGs in the 1st 7 minutes.
The 2nd half looks like a repeat of the 1st. Edina opens the half with a 12-0 run. Matt Enck with an offensive board for 2 free throws then Hutson finds him for 3. Hutson finishes the run with a nice early postup. BSM takes their 2nd timeout of the half to stop the run. 37-24 Hornets with 13:28 left. Isaiah Smith off the BSM bench providing a nice spark in the 2nd half after not playing in the 1st half. He ignites a 10-0 BSM run with a drive for 1-2 FTs and another bucket. 39-34 Edina with 9:28 left.
The Hornets extend the lead again with a BLOB 3 from Middleton and a skip pass for an Andrew Enck 3. Nels Birkeland with a nice cut for 2 and a jumper. BSM not going away and they're still within 5 as we go under 6 minutes to play. Middleton 2 buckets to start a 10-2 Edina run and the lead is 57-44 with 2:59 left. Edina doesn't close it out well though. Dylan Drees for 3 and Nick Peterson with a short jumper sandwiched between 2 Edina turnovers. Peterson with a putback after a missed front end. Then after another missed front end its Drees from deep. All of a sudden its a 3 point game with 17.8 left. BSM takes their last timeout. Edina follows with a timeout as they can't get it in. Then out of that timeout, its Hutson with the catch. I thought BSM got the foul but no whistle and he finds Middleton running for a layup. That's the final tally. Edina wins 59-54.
Post Game:
For Benilde-St. Margaret's, what a tale of 2 sections of the game. When combining the 1st 7 minutes of each half, BSM gets 3 FGs and outscored 33-9. The Red Knights made runs but Edina had an answer each time. Derric Standifer with all 11 of his points in the last 11 minutes of the 1st half to lead BSM. Nick Peterson adds 10. Dylan Drees with 3 triples for 9. He had Hutson on him for most of the night, but nothing came of trying to exploit that match up off the bounce. BSM falls to 8-16 overall. They'll finish up with a trip to Bloomington Jefferson tomorrow and then they host Chaska on Friday night. They could be looking at a 3rd meeting with Cooper in the 3 vs 6 game in 6AAA. They beat the Hawks by 18 at home in the last meeting but lost by 16 at Cooper. If they drop to 7, that would mean a rematch with Waconia who they beat on the road by 4 right after New Year's.
Edina improves to 17-8 with the win. That's 7 out of the last 8 in the win column after 3 tough losses by a combined 11 points. They'll close things out by hosting Minnetonka on Friday. Jack Middleton made a couple critical shots late but overall was pretty quiet despite 16 points. Jacob Hutson finishes with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists on my sheet. Most of those assists in the run to start the game. Very willing passer out of the post. BSM decided to spread the floor with 5 out in the 2nd half and their driving and cutting with guards was something Edina didn't defend well at all. I did like the emphasis off the pick and roll to counter the hard show by throwing back and then looking for Hutson inside. Edina looks pretty locked into the 3 seed but if its coaches vote, Chaska will have a say with a head to head win. Dropping to the 4 seed would be big as it means a likely game with Eden Prairie. Prior Lake clearly gets 1, anything could happen 2-4 or 5. Chanhassen is no picnic at 6, ditto that for Tonka at 7. Plus Jefferson isn't your run of the mill 8 seed either.

A bragging rights weekend
A set of rivalry type games fills my weekend. That includes a pair of boys/girls doubleheaders which always make for a different vibe. Plenty of hot dogs, a disappointing lack of pizza and food fit for royalty on the island. But above all, plenty of competition and entertainment. A great way to wind down the regular season.
Friday: Roseville 64 Mounds View 53
A chance to see these 2 neighbors in person for the 1st time this season. After seeing my previews quoted on the TV broadcast of Roseville's season opener, I surely didn't want to hear that again so I figured I better show up. Great memorabilia from the Roseville TV guy too including a 1991 TWolves program with a pic of a youthful Jeff Munneke (see twitter). We get the Roseville band and cowbell which is never a bad thing. An 11-2 Roseville run in the 1st half gives them a lead they would never give up. Mounds View would hang tough after they got down 13 in the 2nd half. They would cut the margin to 5 with just under 5 minutes left but an 8-0 Raiders run would put the game out of reach. Roseville's Yohanes Gebeyehu with 13 of his 19 in the 2nd half. He knocked down 4 triples. John Briggs with 11 of his 12 off the bench in the 1st half. Mounds View frosh Dylan Wheeler with 16 of his 19 in the 2nd half to help keep Mounds View close. He also had 4 3s. Center John Montgomery adds 10 of his 12 in the 1st half.
Saturday: #3AAAA Park Center 65 Maple Grove 58
To Park Center for this rescheduled district rivalry. Its the 3rd game in 3 days for both teams and a quick turnaround from last night. No Jett's Pizza though? This makes me sad and I'm always sad that its not Rocky Rococo's. But at least there's Pepsi. Maple Grove controls the 1st half to take a 31-25 lead at the break. But fouls allow Park Center to stay close thanks to a 13-8 edge in made FTs. For the 2nd half it was inside vs outside. Inside prevails with too much Dain Dainja. He scores 15 of his 22 in the 2nd half. Detavious Frierson and Tommy Chatman each add 12 for the Pirates. Kyle Dreyer leads Maple Grove with 19 points. Nate Adams with 3 of his 4 triples in the 2nd half. He finishes with 16. Jared Rainey adds 12. Maple Grove had a couple late chances but couldn't get the game back to even. Park Center clinches the NW Suburban West Division title as they have both head to head wins with 2 games left and a 2 game lead. Expect both teams to be 1 seeds come section time so we could see this game again at state.
Saturday: #1AA Minnehaha 79 #1AAA De La Salle 71
To the sold out island for arguably the most anticipated game of this entire season, regular or tourney. Folks turned away long before the end of the boys JV game at this doubleheader. SRO 3 rows deep on the baselines and for the boys game the fans behind the camera stand all night but it wasn't a problem for the girls game, strange. In unrelated news, my knees and feet are absolutely killing me as I write this. I do manage to make the concession stand before the rush for an outstanding turkey croissant. That wins the award for most unique concession item of this season. I know that would bring a smile to Dave Thorson's face. When I once praised the Lance Johnson recommended wild rice soup at Minnehaha (it won that season's award), Dave was not pleased due to his competitive edge. He vowed to up the concession game at D the next time I showed up.
As to the actual game, Minnehaha jumps out to an 11-3 lead thanks to a Suggs triple and pair of assists. D battles back with a trio of Jalen Travis hoops. 1 of those is a stick back and 2nd foul on Suggs. That happens right after the 2nd foul on Holmgren and we're only midway thru the 1st half. 20-19 DLS at 9:13. Tyrell Terry coast to coast and adds a dunk. Kameron Givens with a putback and D has a 26-22 lead at 6:37. Timeout Minnehaha. Suggs attacking for 2, then a triple and he'll add a FT for a 31-30 Redhawks lead. Jamison Battle 2 triples and bonus free throws as he picks up his offense. Suggs with his 3rd foul late in the half but he'll also add the final Minnehaha hoop. 42-38 DLS at the break.
Terry for 3 and then right at Chet Holmgren for a 3 point play. DLS with their biggest lead 48-40 just over a minute into the 2nd half. Minnehaha responds with 2 Holmgren hoops plus a free throw and dunk from Prince Aligbe. Battle with a putback and 2 free throws to keep the DLS lead at 54-47 with 11:47 left. Another Minnehaha timeout allows them to regroup. Suggs always attacking and scores, teams trade bombs, Suggs on the drive again for 2 more and an assist to Holmgren for a dunk. Kaden Johnson for 3, Aligbe with a putback and a turnover for 2 more from Suggs. 16-3 run by Minnehaha and their fans explode. Loudest opponent crowd roar I've heard on the island. 63-57 Redhawks reclaim the lead with 8:15 left.
Suggs with a 3 point play, then draws a charge on the break against Terry and then a laser to an all alone Aligbe inside for a dunk. 68-60 Minnehaha with 6:35 left. Terry with 2 free throws and Andrew Irvin with a high arching pull up over the outstretched hand of Holmgren to cut that lead in half with 4 minutes left. Suggs to Holmgren for the reverse to stop that momentum. Terry and Suggs trade a couple of scores. De La Salle misses a couple open looks at 3s in the last minute. Minnehaha adds a couple of layups off that to close it out. Jalen Suggs terrific again with 32 points and a bunch of assists (I stopped doing my extra stats due to poor viewing). He's such a handful off the bounce. D stopped fouling him on those in the 2nd half but they just ended up as layups. Chet Holmgren with 15, Prince Aligbe with 13. Tyrell Terry leads the Islanders with 26 points. Jamison Battle adds 22. Really good minutes for Kameron Givens with 13 points. Everything in the 1st half until a meaningless 3 at the end. Nothing for the De La Salle bench. Frosh Donovan Smith with 3 important 1st half 3s off the Minnehaha bench. Give Minnehaha credit. They made more plays. The top guys all played well. Suggs and Terry were terrific. Great environment, really fun game.

Redhawks make their claim
Prologue
Now for one of the circled games on the schedule. Back to Minneapolis North for the 1 vs 2 showdown in AA vs Minnehaha. I expected a zoo and this was anything but that. Good seats still available. Quality hot dog and Gatorade keep the counters moving. In honor of Elton John being here on his farewell tour this week, this week's tunes will all be from his catalog. I'll be off Thursday for that at Target Center and then I'll see it again in Las Vegas in September.
Song of the Day: Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Number of Teams I've Seen: 155 (125 games, 49 buildings, 22 online)
Beverage Ticker: 919.2 ounces (10120 calories)
This reminded me some of Saturday's North game vs Waseca in terms of points but not in terms of how. Chet Holmgren swatting away everything early on. Both teams turning the ball over and there's only 1 score in the 1st 4 and a half minutes. North getting in foul trouble too in a game that was called fairly tight. Jalen Suggs with a block and bonus free throws. Holmgren block leads to a layup. Suggs to Holmgren for a 3 point play. 20-4 Minnehaha at the 5:58 mark. Davon Townley dunks a lob after a Minnehaha turnover to give North some life. But North gives up the next 7 to fall behind by 19. Townley beats the buzzer for a little momentum. 32-15 Minnehaha at the half. 13 North fouls, almost that many turnovers and shots blocked. Holmgren 9 blocks in the half on my officially unofficial stat sheet. Plus they shoot no free throws compared to 11-17 for Minnehaha in the half.
Suggs starts the 2nd half with a backcut for a dunk and the lead is 19 again. But here come the mighty mighty Polars. Omar Brown with a bucket and steal for a free throw. Nasir El-Amin runs for a layup. Eli Campbell for 3 to force a timeout and a tech on Minnehaha. Campbell makes the techs and North scores on the possession. North with a quick timeout that appears to be a strange Larry McKenzie special and MoKiller. But they make the good move to go zone out of that timeout. Townley with a block and runs for the reward of a 3 point play. Then Campbell from deep and we're all even at 36. Game on. Its a 21-2 North run in 4:20.
Minnehaha counters with the next 7 thanks to 2 Suggs coast to coast trips for a bucket and free throws. North right back with 8 in a row thanks to a tough floater from Campbell and a Townley putback. 44-43 North with their 1st lead of the night with 7:25 to play. Holmgren with a reverse layup with 7:05 left to give him a triple double. He adds a lob dunk right after that. Townley counters with a slick spinning finish to avoid Holmgren's infinite length. Suggs with a 3 point play and North takes timeout down 3 with 4:27 left. Minnehaha promptly turns it over twice and Eli Campbell buries no doubt 3s on both. Timeout Minnehaha with 3:45 left as they trail 53-50.
Kaden Johnson runs for a layup from Suggs and a blocked shot leads to a Suggs hoop. Suggs adds a clutch 3 to push the lead to 4. After the teams trade bonus free throws, its Suggs with 2 free throws and then an exclamation dunk to close it out. He gets a T for that as the crowd was on him all night but it won't matter. The run is 13-2 and puts the game away. North makes 1 of the 2 techs and makes a 3 at the buzzer to close the final margin. Minnehaha wins 63-59.
Post Game:
For Minneapolis North, Eli Campbell with another quality outing. He scores 17 of his 19 in the 2nd half with 4 big 3s to help North rally. Davon Townley struggled early with Chet Holmgren's length blocking shots but once he got going, he actually was able to get some good looks off. Polars trailed by 19 early in the 2nd half before taking a 3 point lead with under 4 minutes left. North was able to turn Minnehaha over a little bit and I loved the move to go to the 2-3 and 1-2-2 zones. North with 2 league games left but they've clinched the city. They have a trip to Eden Prairie next week and they'll end with St. Paul Central at home in the Twin Cities Game.
For Minnehaha, Jalen Suggs with another big night. He goes for 33 points and 12 boards. But only 3 assists on my sheet so not the big ball movement night that we've seen on other nights. He also added 3 blocks on my stat line. Chet Holmgren on my count ends with a triple double of 14 points, 15 rebounds and 12 blocks. Most of those rebounds and blocks in the 1st half when North kept coming back for more. Its no easier for Minnehaha as next they have the trip to the island on Saturday night. Arrive early for thatcircus doubleheader.
Last year we didn't get the rematch at state. For this year, what message does this game leave for a rematch? If I'm Minnehaha, yes I have the statement that I won but how big a deal is the North rally in the 2nd half? Minnehaha is prone to turning the switch on and off. An end to end outing here would have been a major statement especially considering the start.

Weekend Bird Watching
Yes it was a weekend for the birds. The 1st 2 rounds are Orioles. That includes Eagles too with Osseo visiting Totino-Grace. Then the finale with the #2AAA Bluejays of Waseca bringing one of the best squads in AAA to the north side to take on #2AA Minneapolis North. A mid-afternoon break means no concession food but between game Famous Dave's instead.
Friday: Osseo 59 Totino-Grace 57
This was as good a defensive battle on the whole as I've seen all year. Both teams locking up on that end, though both teams aren't exactly classified as explosive on offense. 25-21 TG at the break as it took until midway thru the 1st half to see any semblance of offense. DJ Akepti with a pair of 3s as TG opens up a 41-27 lead with just over 13 min left. But the Eagles are held to only 1 FG from there until 90 seconds left in the game. Furious rally from the Osseo defense and their bench. Chaz Franklin 5 in a row to start the rally. Miles Vinson with a triple in the run as well. The starters chime in too. Cornell Richardson 2 bombs. Terrance Waits with a steal for 2 to tie it at 47 and then buries a 3 off a scramble for the lead just under 3:30 left. Franklin another bomb, a turnover for a bucket and then 2 Osseo FTs after TG misses 2 critical freebies. Osseo clings to the lead late as they are up 4 with 30 seconds left and TG cuts it to 2 at the end. 5 critical 3s in the 2nd half for Osseo and their quickness on defense was too much.
Saturday Gm 1: St. Louis Park 69 Stillwater 61
Sticking with the Orioles theme, I get my 1st in person viewing of St. Louis Park as well as Stillwater this season. Stillwater getting all their offense in the post from Ben Recksiedler and Trenton Attwood. Anthony Rayson countering that with his own solid post offense. 9 point Orioles lead at the break. That would largely hold until a 9-0 Stillwater run cut the lead to 49-47 with 8:06 left. But its a MoKiller timeout and was it ever. St. Louis Park counters with an 11-0 run out of that to put the game away. Rayson with 5 points and the Orioles add a couple offensive putbacks in the run as well. Nate Shikenjanski and Ben Smalley try to help out the bigs but its too little too late for the Ponies. Anthony Rayson with 26 all inside to lead the Orioles. Ben Recksiedler with 19 to lead Stillwater. St. Louis Park has won 12 of 13. Next week they host rival Benilde-St. Margaret's and then what could be the defacto Metro West title game at Chaska. Stillwater with a tough week ahead at home vs Cretin-Derham Hall and St. Michael-Albertville.
Saturday Gm 2: #2AAA Waseca 77 #2AA Minneapolis North 64
Now its a fun battle of #2s. Waseca blows the doors off early with a 19-4 start as they're running for buckets and burying 3s. North keeps it within shouting distance then its 2 more 3s and a 3 point play and all of a sudden its 43-20 as we approach the 3 minute mark. Forward Matt Olsem sits for Waseca with 2 fouls and North goes on a 14-0 run forcing turnovers. Omar Brown with the 1st 6 of that spurt. But Malik Willingham buries a 3 and Andrew Morgan beats the buzzer with a dunk. 48-35 Waseca at the break. Their big 4 all with 10 or 11 points (43 of the 48).
Malik Willingham inside out for 3 and the lead is at 16 with 16 minutes left. You can't discount North at home and here come the mighty Polars. Nasir El-Amin 2 hoops, Davon Townley a post bucket and a putback. Eli Campbell for 3 and a steal for 2. Omar Brown drives and scores. The Polars run is 21-4 and we have a game folks. 59-58 Waseca with just under 9 minutes left. But its Malik Willingham again to stop the bleeding. He goes for a 3 point play at the 7:14 mark They breaks a streak of almost 9 minutes with only 1 Waseca FG. Post Andrew Morgan with a hoop and runs the floor for 2 free throws. Then a nice Iverson screen the screener set for a Malik Willingham 3. Morgan with a dunk and Waseca adds bonus FTs. That 14-2 run pushes the lead back to 73-60 with 3:18 left. Bluejays close it out from there. Malik Willingham leads all scorers with 24 points and he came up with run killing buckets. Andrew Morgan adds 17 inside. Kyrese Willingham with 11 of his 13 in the 1st half. Nick Dufault with 14. Nasir El-Amin leads North with 18 points. Omar Brown adds 16.
So with Waseca and De La Salle both beating Minneapolis North by similar scores and Waseca doing it on the road in impressive fashion and being undefeated, do you swap them into the top spot in AAA? Let the debate rage on. Considering what North's pressure did tonight, have to think De La Salle's man pressure is something that would have to concern Waseca. But give Waseca credit, North made big runs at them and they responded each time. North has the big AA showdown with Minnehaha on Tuesday and a trip to Eden Prairie the following Tuesday. They've already clinched the Minneapolis City title and a place in the Twin Cities Game.

Raiding the Lineup
Prologue
To Cretin-Derham Hall for a showdown between the Raiders and #8AAAA Eden Prairie. Both lineups without a couple of key pieces (more later). A weird night all around. First, I pass on the best hot dog around and decide to go with the pizza meal deal (more Lays chips for the counter) instead. That was my remorse for passing on the pizza at Cooper on Tuesday. I end up with Coke for the drink (wanted Gatorade) and I had to enjoy it with Ryan James, YUCK! For those who follow us on twitter, you'll know our Pepsi (me) vs Coke (RJ) rivalry boiled over during the super bowl. Also, no Suel Forrester on the microphone tonight which was quite unfortunate. Always a unique experience listening to him. Quality music is a regular item though so we pick this classic from a timeout.
Song of the Day: Toto - Africa
Number of Teams I've Seen: 151 (118 games, 48 buildings, 19 online)
Beverage Ticker: 863.2 ounces (9520 calories)
John Henry and Austin Andrews out of the Eden Prairie lineup. No Karsten Broadley for CDH. Great start for EP. Ariel Bland with a dunk and blocked shot that are followed by back to back Drake Dobbs triples. Bland with another dunk to close the 14-3 run. 21-9 Eagles at the 11 minute mark. Dobbs already with 10. Tre Holloman brings CDH back with a triple and leaks out for a layup. He adds a steal for another bucket and a pair of 3s. The last is banked in on a stepback. The CDH run is 17-2 over 5 plus minutes. CDH 31-26 at the 5 minute mark. Josiah Remus-Ford deep off the CDH bench with a couple of late 3s to keep CDH up at the break 41-37.
Jaeden King was on the floor after the halftime buzzer. After a couple minutes of evaluation, he's off to the locker room. He starts the second half but just 40 seconds into the 2nd half, he's down again and not going anywhere. After a long delay, he's taken off in a wheelchair. I send my well wishes for a quick recovery.
Connor Christensen with 2 buckets, then a putback and knocking down a 3 on an extra pass for early EP offense. Curtis Jones picking up for King's absence with a triple, 2 freebies and a putback of his own. 53-49 EP at 11:15. Miles Frisch, the main replacement for Austin Andrews, with a triple and the Eagles lead is 58-51 with 10:30 left. CDH counters with a 12-0 run. Holloman 3 free throws and a turnover conversion in the run. Will Burke with a pretty fake handoff for a bucket on an old Bill McKee set that CDH has run forever. Frisch breaks the run with a textbook corner 3 on a baseline drift. Bland crashes the offensive board for 2 free throws. 63 all with 3:03 left. He'll add 1 more FT for the lead with 2:23 left.
Amari Carter with a 3 point play and CDH with 4 of 4 free throws to go up 6 with 49 seconds left. Bland misses 2 chances to cut the lead but CDH misses 2 free throws and Dobbs makes it a 1 possession game with 20.8 left. CDH 1 free throw and Dobbs quickly attacking the other way. He's fouled and makes the 1st of 2. The second is no good and EP has it. It goes inside to Christensen all alone but he knows the lead is 3. So he kicks opposite to Brendan Donohue (John Henry's replacement) wide open on the left wing. He buries the triple for his only hoop of the night. That ties the game at 71 and we'll go to overtime (after already seeing OT in the sophomore game)
In the overtime, Tre Holloman with a slick assist to Will Burke for a layup. Holloman adds 4 FTs for a 3 point CDH lead with 1:17 left. EP trying to rally down 6, then a tough illegal screen call against them. Coach Flom not at all happy with that call and later both coaches chirp at each other for double technicals. No free throws for those but the rest is free throws for fouls. CDH goes on to win 86-78 in OT.
Post Game:
For Eden Prairie, Drake Dobbs leads the way with 26 points. Ariel Bland and Connor Christensen each add 17. Like what both of them did in the game. Christensen always gets a tough task on the defensive end. Bland was very active inside and productive. Offense hard to come by for the rest of the depleted roster as they only had 18 points. The Eagles fall to 13-8 overall and have now lost 3 straight. Tough back to back as Cambridge-Isanti visits tomorrow. They also have 3 conference games and a visit from Minneapolis North remaining. Eden Prairie now looking at the 3 seed thanks to a head to head loss to Shakopee. Plus a game left with Edina who's lurking not too far behind. But The Eagles do hope to be fully healthy next week.
For Cretin-Derham Hall, Curtis Jones finishes with 27 points including 12-13 from the charity stripe. Tre Holloman was top notch with 24 points and many assists. 15 of his points in the 1st half and then 7 of 8 free throws after the half. Will Burke with a workman like outing of 13 points. The Raiders have now won 8 straight and 13 of 14 since just before Christmas. They visit #1AAA De La Salle in a boys/girls doubleheader on Saturday night with the Christian Brothers Trophy on the line. Then a big Suburban East matchup a week later as East Ridge visits. CDH currently tied with White Bear Lake for 2nd place in the league with the 2nd seed in loaded 4AAAA also on the line. A loss in that East Ridge game and Tartan running the table could knock the Raiders down to a 4 vs 5 home rematch with North St. Paul in the 1st round. Granted the Suburban East coaches have ganged up on the Metro East in voting for a long time.

Fighting the snow
The darn white stuff still hanging around so that will slow and delay my travels but not stop them. So on the road we go thru the snow this week. As has been fairly common on Mondays and Wednesdays this season, its TCAC delight. In between, we'll fit in an adventure to the NW suburbs for a showdown in the Metro West.
Monday: Hope Academy 71 Minnesota Transitions 55
A matchup of 2 teams battling for position in section 4A. Remember that last year 4A and 4AA went to a tiered system of byes. So a 1 seed difference could mean an extra game. We'll see what happens with that this season. Hope would open a 12 point halftime lead only to see a Wolves 11-0 run bring the game back to within 1 with under 13 minutes left. But Hope star Caleb Hoilien goes for 13 of 17 Lions points (with an assist on 1 of the 2 other buckets) just after that. Hope pushes the lead back to 14. MTS gets 1 last chance down 9 and they have the ball after a blocked shot with about 4 minutes to go. Wolves can't convert and Hope buries a 3 on the other end to clear any doubt. Sam Ojebode does his usual dirty work on the glass for Hope. Caleb Hoilien with 5 3s and 30 points to lead all scorers. Michael Emery Minor with 27 to lead MTS. Guard Kyriaun Christian adds 16 for the Wolves. MTS has beat up on the lesser part of the section and with their ability to score quickly, they are one of the wildcards to watch in the section.
Wednesday: Chesterton Academy 55 MSAD 34
To the Galleria for an off night of shopping. OK maybe not, but its right next door. Of course, after all of the walking I did thru the building, I felt like I had done the 3 blocks to get there. Gym is buried in a back corner of the building and the logical entrance (which I exited by) was of course locked. Neat little popcorn machine working and 3 rows of chairs for "bleachers". But its obstructed view seating. For those who saw the picture on twitter (and if not, LOOK NOW!), I had to peer around the pillar to get the full floor. As to the game itself, by the time I finally made it in MSAD had taken a 9-3 lead. But I'm not good luck for the Trojans. Its all Chesterton from there. 36-22 at the break, lots of Chesterton guys see time even early. Knights win easily. Chesterton is in a very tight pack of 6 teams right behind the leaders in section 4A. But they have losses to Christian Life and Liberty Classical who are also in that pack. MSAD playing with only 6 guys.
Tuesday: Chaska 80 Robbinsdale Cooper 51
The good news for Cooper in this one is that they kept Cole Nicholson from going for another school record. He had 51 points in their 1st meeting this season. Bad news he still had 28 with no good answer for him. 11 point game at the half. Chaska blows it open with a 16-2 run to start the 2nd half. Nicholson with the last 7 points of that run. 55-30 Chaska with under 12 minutes left. That's just about enough for Cooper coach Bo Powell as he keeps his star 3 guards on the bench most of the rest of the way. Not a good effort on either end for Cooper. Too many clean looks and way too many easy catches and scores for Cole Nicholson. Then again Cooper really has no good matchup for him either. Conner Krenos adds 18 points for Chaska. Jalen Justice leads Cooper with 11 but all in the 1st half. Chaska has won 5 in a row and 11 of 12 since a holiday loss at Eden Prairie. That only loss was a buzzer beater loss at St. Louis Park. Chaska remains tied with St. Louis Park on top of the Metro West at 8-1. The teams have their rematch in Chaska next Friday. Cooper now a disappointing 4-5 (10-9 overall) and tied for 4th in the league with their 3rd straight loss. But with their firepower at the guard spots, they are capable of beating absolutely anybody in AAA. Not a team you want to see come playoff time.
