Titans grab another conference title

Its the cliff notes edition of big game basketball tonight.  A full house at Tartan for their rivalry doubleheader showdown with district rival North St. Paul.  Great entertainment from the admin shootout at halftime with the principal and ADs shooting for bragging rights.  Plus another round of xylophones, gongs and mime masks from the combined North Tartan drum line.

An 18-4 Tartan run early would set the tone.  Joevon Walker 2 power hoops inside.  Jordan Horn 2 3 point plays and another hoop.  Noah Whalen and Jordan Thompson with 3s via kickout and turnover respectively.  20-8 Tartan at 11:10.  Adreon Wadlington with a super burst and Jake Weber with a couple of inside buckets to cut the Tartan lead to 22-16.  Jarvis Thomas with a 3 point play and a block that leads to a hoop.  Then Thomas adds another hoop and makes a free throw after grabbing an offensive board of a free throw..  Tack on another 3 point play for him as well.  40-24 Tartan at the half.

The game was physical inside with minimal whistles.  North St. Paul would hang around in the 2nd half but never get it closer than 12.  That was with 10:25 to go.  Then Horn with a nasty spin move for a 3 point play.  2 more hoops push it to 17 before Goodnews Kpegeol goes back to back.  Elijah Johnson counters for 3, Thomas with a tip dunk and Horn with 2 free throws off a turnover and the lead grows to 21 with 5:44 left.  That's enough to slam the door.  Tartan wins 76-62.

With the win, Tartan improves to 21-4 overall.  They'll finish with Edina at home on Friday.  The Titans finish 15-1 in the Metro East.  That guarantees them at least a share of the conference title.  Jarvis Thomas played very well with 17 points 12 rebounds and 4 blocks on my sheet.  Easily could have had 10 trips to the foul line if the physical play would have been called.  Jordan Horn adds 16.  Elijah Johnson with 12 off the bench.  Jarvis Thomas and Joevon Walker too much to deal with inside.

North St. Paul is now 14-1 in the Metro East, 20-5 overall.  They can share the league title with a win at Mahtomedi on Friday.  Soph wing Goodnews Kpegeol with 15 points to lead the Polars.  11 of those in the 2nd half.  Adreon Wadlington chips in with 11.  North St. Paul did have some success off the bounce, especially early.  But that was something I thought they could have exploited better with some isolations (something a WI disciple like coach Janquart would abhor).  Beyond that, Tartan put their defenders in and the Polars generated very little offense.

Exploring a kingdom exurb

Prologue
There's something wrong in the world today but I know what it is.  Something is wrong with my map!  I'm in the kingdom exurb of Waconia.  A rare non-metro appearance and my first visit to this gym.  The #5AAA Wildcats taking on Breck in a non-conference game.  Sparse Breck crowd, respectable Waconia fan following.  Early arrival means the hot dogs not quite ready.  Microwave and bad bun so not good.  But Pepsi products means only the 2nd appearance of Mug Root Beer of the season.  That is outstanding.

Game Time:
Story of the night is Waconia guard Josh Rands.  He buries a2 3s, takes a turnover for a layup and scores another tough hoop.  Then a transition 3 and a floater to convert a BLOB.  Rands scores 15 of the first 17 Waconia points.  Joey Korteum takes a steal for 2 and its 19-6 Waconia at the 10 minute mark.  Korteum adds a triple for a 27-13 lead at 7:20.  Quinlan Faeth off the Breck bench for 3, a nice weave set for frosh star David Roddy and a Justin Bergerson putback cut the lead to 27-20.  Waconia finishes the half on a 13-3 run.  Korteum, Rands and Connor Schultz all with 3s and the bigs add a pair of jumpers.  40-23 Waconia at the break.  Josh Rands with 18 and 4 triples.

Rands keeps it going by scoring off 2 more turnovers, cutting for a layup and knocking down a 3 for the 1st 9 Waconia points of the 2nd half.  49-24 Waconia at the 14:42 mark.  Gotta have Faeth for 3 and a Roddy 3 point play if you're Breck.  53-39 Waconia with 8:44 left.  Rands with another triple to push the lead back to 19, 62-43 with 6:44 left.  Rands adds 1 more hoop to his big night.  Waconia wins 74-58.

Post Game:
Northwestern FB commit Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman leads Breck with 18 points.  David Roddy 14, Justin Bergerson 10.  Miles Olowu nice minutes giving 9 points as a backup center.  But they did a really poor job of getting to 3 point shooters, a Waconia strength.  Breck falls to 13-9 overall and remains 7-2 in the IMAC.  A brutally tough week continues with a trip to St. Paul Academy on Wednesday and they host 19-4 Annandale on Friday.  That could be enough to open the door to Brooklyn Center taking the top seed in 5AA East.

Waconia improves to 19-6 overall and remains 6-3 in the Wright County East.  They host division leader New Prague in the season finale on Friday.  Josh Rands another huge night with 6 triples and 34 points.  Joey Kortuem adds 12 with a pair of 3s.  They did a fair job keep the ball out of the post and forced a bunch of turnovers.  When they shoot it well, this team is very dangerous.  A classic live and die by the 3 team.  Assuming all holds, I would give Waconia the 3 seed in 6AAA.  I think the worst they do is 4 as they'll end up ahead of Henry and Orono.  Those 2 could be playing for the 5 seed tomorrow.

St. Paul Showdown Saturday

Prologue
Its the 1st of back to back Saturdays in St. Paul.  Next week is championships but this week is rivalries.  We'll start with a city rivalry between Central and Highland.  Then we'll mosey up the street to neighboring Cretin-Derham Hall for their annual battle with De La Salle.  A day of outstanding food with a very good walking taco at Highland Park.  Nacho cheese on it rarely seen but a high quality addition.  Then the always outstanding all beef hot dog at CDH.  Unfortunately the beverage choice was all Coke all day.  Also need to praise the best national anthem I've heard all season.  That was done by a CDH senior student before the CDH/DLS girls game.  An a cappella national anthem for a guy is a nightmare task but this kid hit a grand slam.

Game 1: Central at Highland Park
The Highland Park student section full and standing for this one.  Leader of that group in the highly appropriate kilt.  Very intense game throughout.  This was the hardest that I've seen 2 teams play all season.  Jack Beckman dives on a loose ball and then has 2 Scots dive on him.  That tie up results in some head injury and Beckman doesn't return.  Big loss there for Central with 6:24 remaining in the first half.  Back to back hoops along with a pair of free throws from Khari Dennis would put Highland Park up 54-47 with 10:45 to play.  Sam Gubbrud 5 in a row to bring it back to even for Central.  We're tight the rest of the way.  Gubbrud with clutch triple to tie it at 62 with 1:34 left.  Highland spreads and drives for a layup, Central ties with free throws.  Highland tries to hold but they'll miss with 22 seconds left.  Gubbrud fouled with 4 seconds left, misses the front end, gets it back and is stripped (no whistle) at the end of regulation.  64 all to overtime.  Central with the ball up 1 with 18 seconds to go in the overtime.  Highland steals the inbounds pass and promptly gives it right back.  Gubbrud makes both free throws and Highland doesn't get a good look at the end.  Central wins 72-69.  Sam Gubbrud with 30 points, 22 of those after halftime to lead Central.  Mike Cornelious with 22, Khari Dennis with 17 to lead Highland Park.  The wins means Central will play at Johnson on Thursday for at least a share of the league title.  With a win or Johnson loss this week, Central will go to the Twin Cities game for a rematch with Minneapolis North.

Game 2: #1AAA De La Salle at Cretin-Derham Hall
De La Salle has struggled with bigs all year, how would they deal with Daniel Oturu inside?  How would CDH react after a tough 5 overtime loss at Stillwater last night?  Its Oturu with 2 early buckets and it looks like here we go again.  But De La Salle subs and the lineup ends up with Goanar Mar playing center and matched up with Oturu.  De La Salle hasn't done that all year in the games I've seen.  They've avoided Mar on big guys like the plague.  But tonight, it was very effective.  It didn't hurt Mar's offense either as he had it going all night.  Chris Perry had the task of guarding Gabe Kalscheur and was in foul trouble all night.  That hurt his offense as he ended up scoreless.  Dominic Bledsoe with 3 triples off the bench to add additional offense.  CDH without a true point guard and that showed in turnovers against the man to man pressure.  CDH really struggled trying to get into sets.  CDH would be within 3 early in the 2nd half but DLS would pull away. DLS wins 64-49.  Goanar Mar 29 points, Gabe Kalscheur 15.  Daniel Oturu 17 points and 12 rebounds on my sheet to lead CDH.  Jordan Ammons adds 14.  CDH probably still looking at a 2 seed in 4AAAA, but if Tartan or North St. Paul wins out, then the discussion for that 2 seed behind Woodbury becomes tougher.

Metro West Bird Battle

Prologue
Its an important game in the Metro West as St. Louis Park visits Cooper.  Both teams sitting 1 game out of 1st.  But both visit league leader Chaska next week.  Always a tough choice between pizza and a walking taco.  I decide to go with the sausage pizza which wasn't bad.  To save the waistline no meal deal with chips.  Just a can of Coke for refreshment.

Game Time:
Cooper forward Melvin Newbern starts strong.  2 putbacks and we're tied at 6.  St. Louis Park gets a teardrop and 3 from soph PG Cire Mayfield.  Newbern counters with a 3 point play and a reverse layup. 18-13 Cooper at the 12 minute mark.  Newburn 2 and the foul.  The FT is no good but he ends up getting it back for 2 more.  He'll then go coast to coast for 2.  After a no call by the bad officiating crew leads to a Cooper bucket and 23-22 lead, Orioles head coach David Breitenbucher is on the court and livid with the officials.  Can't blame him either as no calls are going the Orioles way.  Surprised the bad crew had the restraint to not T him up.  Newbern adds another 3 point play.  But a questionable charge call sends him to the bench at the 7:32 mark with 2 fouls and 18 points.  Ryan Domres then takes over the St. Louis Park offense.  He scores 9 out of 10 Orioles points with a variety.  A putback, jumper and nice post move all in there.  Rest of the half remains even.  38-37 St. Louis Park at the half.

Ray Whitlock stops and pops for 2 and then left alone for 3.  That's around a Damien Gordon 3.  48-44 Cooper with 15:50 left.  Melvin Newbern comes up huge in the game winning run.  Fake handoff and score off the BLOB, 2 free throws in the post, , a bucket and a 3 point play.  Then he takes a turnover for 2 and slashes off the diagonal screen to catch and finish for 2 more.  That's 13 points for Newbern in a 20-4 Cooper run.  68-48 Cooper with 5:30 left.  Its no closer than 13 after that.  Cooper wins 81-67.

Post Game:
For St. Louis Park, center Ryan Domres with 16 of his 18 in the 1st half.  Ray Whitlock with a quiet 16 before fouling out.  Mykal Howard was in foul trouble all night and fouled out with 7 minutes left.  St. Louis Park falls 2 back of Chaska in the Metro West at 8-4.  They fall to 17-7 overall.  They host Chanhassen and visit Chaska in the final week.  Big loss for St. Louis Park as there is still a battle for the 3 seed in 6AAAA with Armstrong.  Armstrong has a head-head win but power rankings are tight.  Not to mention falling behind Cooper in the Metro West standings.  Now they could up at 6 if they don't end up in front of Jefferson and Cooper.

For Cooper, too much Melvin Newbern with 39 points and some double figure number of rebounds.  He attacked full court off the bounce, slashed off screens to the post and crashed the offensive boards to get his points.  He was also used a bit to handle the ball outside and potentially exploit a favorable matchup.  Soph Beijan Newbern adds 14.  Cooper is now 16-5, 9-3 in the Metro West.  They stay 1 game behind Chaska in the Metro West standings but control their own destiny with a Tuesday trip to Chaska.  They'll end the season at home against Jefferson.

Eagles tuning up for the Tourney

Prologue
Back to Champlin Park for my 1st opportunity to see Eden Prairie play this season.  That's very late by my standards.   No Nick Geolat for the Eagles as he's out due to injury.   Very small student section for Champlin Park.  Back to the water diet for the beverage counter (newly fixed) and the hot dogs are starting to add up.

Number of Teams I've Seen: 140 (53 courts, 2 new, 2 TV games, 105 varsity games)

Game Time:
Aaron Kloeppner back to back 3s countered by a Ryan Jacobus 3.  Then a very touchy elbowing call on Theo John at the 15:36 mark sends him to the bench with a 2nd foul.  6-5 Champlin Park leading.  Not this ref's last questionable call of the night.  Brian Smith for 3 at the 12:05 mark.  Then we hit an offensive lull before John returns at the 8:39 mark.  He promptly gets foul and makes 2 free throws.  Kloeppner with his 3rd triple for a 22-14 Rebels lead just inside the 8 minute mark.  Then Owen Chose comes to life with 2 3s in a stretch where he scores 11 straight Eden Prairie points.  That's with Brady Rudrud having 2 fouls for EP.  Will Pahl ends a 12-4 Eden Prairie run with a 3 with 2 minutes left in the half.  That pulls the Eagles within 1.  Chris Davis with 2 late free throws for a 37-35 Champlin Park lead at the half.

We're tied at 40 early in the second half when Rudrud gets going.  He scores 9 straight to help Eden Prairie open a 51-46 lead iwth 12:18 left.  Champlin Park goes 1-3-1 and Eden Prairie spreads the floor.  Champlin Park kids with a brief boring chant before starting to hum the Jeopardy theme.  Chose with a hoop to push the lead to 7.  Then its John inside for 2 and adding a free throw plus 2 swats on the other end.  Rudrud sits with his 4th foul at 8:24 and the momentum is with Champlin Park.

McKinley Wright with 2 freebies on Rudrud's 4th and then scores to tie it at 55 with under 8 to play.  Soph Kyler Kluge with a bucket off a turnover countered by a Wright putback.  63-62 Eden Prairie 4:25 to go.  Kluge 2 free throws after grabbing a miss.  Wright driving hard and stopping for 2.  Jacobus with a nice step back.  Wright 2 free throws on a dicey 5th foul call on Rudrud with 3:10 to play.  67-66 Eden Prairie leading but they look to be in trouble.

Kluge and Chose make 4 free throws around a Rebels miss.  Rebels miss again and its Chose with the dagger 3 from the right corner with just under 2 to play.  Bang!  74-66 Eden Prairie on top.  Wright adds a 3 point play and a 3 but Eden Prairie makes their free throws.  Eden Prairie goes on the road and gets the impressive road win 82-74.

Post Game:
McKinley Wright leads Champlin Park with 29 points via 16 free throws.  He scored their last 14 points in the last 5:30 trying to keep the Rebels close.  Theo John with 14 points.  The Rebels really tried to pound the ball into him in the 2nd half.  Very physical play trying to guard him and a ton of fouls called for it.  Aaron Kloppner with 11 of his 13 (3 3s) early in the first half.  10 points outside the big 2 in the 2nd half.  Plus they couldn't get a critical stop.  #5AAAA Champlin Park falls to 17-5 overall.  They're still 13-2 and 2 games ahead of Elk River in the NW Suburban North Division.  Champlin Park travels to Irondale on Friday.

Owen Chose leads Eden Prairie with 26 points.  When he got it going, Eden Prairie came to life.  Ryan Jacobus with 17, Brady Rudrud with 15 before fouling out.  Rudrud a very good glue guy who can score too.  Not your traditional lockdown defensive Eden Prairie team.  But they have a ton of quality guard play even with Geolat out.  Size will hurt them badly.  But they can shoot the 3 and get to the rim and you better not foul them.  They made 18 of 19 free throws in the 2nd half including all 14 in the last 3:48.  Eden Prairie improves to 13-10 overall, 2-3 in the Lake Conference.  But don't let the record fool you into thinking this was a huge upset.  This was a top 5 preseason team and 9 of those 10 losses are by a grand total of 24 points.  8 of those losses by 4 points or less and the last one was by 5.  Eden Prairie visits Wayzata on Friday.  Then Edina visits on Tuesday and its highly possible that the 3 seed in section 2AAAA could be on the line.  Regardless, I don't want to see the Eagles in my draw.

Roaming the North Metro

As we wind down the season, its a 2 night tour of the north metro and 3 leagues.

Game 1 (Monday): #2AAAA Osseo at Spring Lake Park
I begin in the Northwest Suburban.  Osseo won the 1st meeting by 44, did SLP coach Grant Guzy have any super tricks up his sleeve for this one?  Answer, not really.  Osseo's offense just too much in this one.  52 in the 1st half and they roll.  Osseo gets 14 guys in the book and only 4 in double figures.  Great balance.  Allan Anderson with 15 of his 17 in the 1st half including a 4 point play.  Dontae Jones all 17 of his points in the 2nd half.  John Bezdicek another productive night with 15 off the bench.  Aaron Flink with 12 and 4 others with 11 for Spring Lake Park.  Osseo wins 102-67

Game 2: Brooklyn Center at Fridley
Then its off to the Tri-Metro.  The early tipoff gives me a chance to sneak in a rematch of an overtime game from 2 weeks ago.  It didn't disappoint.  That was in spite of the annoying fans who decided to stand on the rail and block the view of the upper deck.  Tessy Pal with 4 putbacks and a layup early for Fridley.  Fridley would end the 1st half on an 11-2 run to lead 33-22 at the break.

Another Pal putback puts Fridley up 37-25 1 minute into the 2nd half.  But Brooklyn Center would make a comeback.  Deshawn Pickford 5 straight.  Toegar Karn with a hoop and a 3.  Lu'Cye Patterson finishes the run with a putback.  We're even at 41 with 10:15 to play  Fridley misses 5 of 6 free throws before Patterson puts BC up 1.  Shyheem Murray for 3 and a dunk to put Fridley back on top 47-43 with 5 minutes left.  Fridley up 4 inside 3 minutes left, but a turnover and an ill-advised 3, lead to a Karn free throw and a Pickford 3 to tie it up.  Very much like the previous meeting.  Fridley misses and a jump ball goes to BC.  They'll hold and its a drive and dish to 8th grader Rudwan Tahir for the game winning 3 with 4.8 left.  Brooklyn Center wins 52-49.  Deshawn Pickford with 15 for Brooklyn Center.  Tessy Pal with 18 to lead Fridley including 5 offensive rebound scores.

Game 3: Cretin-Derham Hall at Mounds View
Finally a big one in the Suburban East.  I join this one in progress tied at 10 with 7:30 to go in the 1st half.  The rest of the half is tight as Mounds View hangs around with 3 triples. 25-23 CDH at the break.  Daniel Oturu comes out and destroys the paint for the 1st 4 minutes of the 2nd half.  Hoop and a dunk from the right block, hoop from the left block.  2 more inside scores to give him 10 in under 4 minutes.  40-26 CDH with 13:47 left and Mounds View takes their 2nd timeout of the half to attempt to figure something out.  CDH run is 15-3 to start the half.

As you would expect, the Mustangs make a very timely adjustment and go 1-3-1.  That keeps the ball out of Oturu's hands inside.  Mounds View would claw their way back from there.  Zeke Thompson a couple hoops to get the margin to 10 . Nate Albers 5 in a row and the CDH lead is down to 46-40 with 8:15 left.    But Mounds View couldn't get stops.  After 2 Albers FTs with 2:59 left, the Mustangs are still down 6.  CDH helps the cause by missing 8 free throws after that.  Nate Albers hits a pair of clutch 3s.  Mounds View had the ball down 4 with 38.5 left but went looking for a 3 instead of attacking the rim.  That resulted in a turnover and CDH seal it from there by making their last 4 free throws.   Cretin-Derham Hall wins 68-59.  Daniel Oturu with 17 to lead the Raiders.  Chris Perry 15, Jordan Ammons 12.  Nate Albers with 27 points and 5 3s.  He went over the 1000 career point mark in the 2nd half.  CDH hangs on to the top spot in the Suburban East and pushes Mounds View 2 games back into 3rd.  Woodbury remains 1 game back and hosts Mounds View on Thursday.

Weekly 360 Windmill - Feb 7, 2016

Its the Weekly 360 Windmill where we look around the metro at current happenings.  As we go into the final 2 weeks of the season, let's take a look at all the local conference and section races.

CONFERENCES:

EMAC: Hope Academy has clinched via head-head win over International School
IMAC: Minnehaha has a 1 game lead on Breck.  Breck at Minnehaha on Tuesday.  Minnehaha win clinches via 2 head-head wins.
LAKE: Hopkins is 1 up on Wayzata in the loss column.  They split their season series.
METRO EAST: North St. Paul is 1 up on Tartan.  NSP at Tartan and Mahtomedi in the final week.
METRO WEST: Chaska has 1 game lead on Cooper, St. Louis Park and Jefferson.  Chaska hosts Cooper and St. Louis Park in the final week.
MPLS CITY: North leads Henry by 1 game.  Henry at North on Thursday.  North clinches outright with a win.  Henry shares with a win.
MCAA: Heritage and New Life have clinched division titles with 1 league game left.
NW SUBURBAN NORTH: Champlin Park is 2 up on Elk River with 4 to play.  Elk River at Champlin Park in the final week.
NW SUBURBAN WEST: Osseo is 2 up on Maple Grove with 4 to play.  They visit Maple Grove on the final night.
ST. PAUL CITY: Central leads Johnson and Highland Park by 2 games in loss column.  Central visits both in the final week.
SOUTH SUBURBAN: Apple Valley is 2 up on Lakeville North and Shakopee.  Shakopee plays both this week.  Apple Valley at Lakeville N in the final week.
SUBURBAN EAST: Cretin-Derham Hall leads Mounds View and Woodbury by 1 game in the loss column.  CDH at Mounds View on Tuesday.
TRI-METRO:  St. Croix Lutheran has clinched the east.  De La Salle is 1 up on Columbia Heights in the west.  De La Salle at Columbia Heights on Monday.  St. Croix Lutheran at Columbia Heights next week.

SECTIONS:
This is how I would seed it, even if the section decides to use QRF.

SECTION 4A:  Top 4 here look to pretty set.  North, Heritage, CHOF and Prairie Seeds.  I give Hope the 5 seed (though I think the vote will go different).  MTS has the power ranking but has lost 9 of 11.  Cristo Rey lower power rankings and bad losses but a head-head win over Legacy has to be rewarded.

SECTION 4AA: St. Croix Lutheran and Minnehaha are the clear top 2 seeds here.  New Life Academy is an interesting case with a better record but lesser schedule.  I think SPA gets the 3.  Now the debate becomes Roosevelt and New Life for the 4 vs 5.

SECTION 5AA EAST: This group is fascinating.  Breck has a win over SW Christian (no Jack Jenson) but loss to Brooklyn Center.  SW Christian has the best record but lowest schedule strength.  If its me voting I buck the power rankings and go Brooklyn Center, Breck, SW Christian.

SECTION 3AAA: Eeeek!  Only 1 team over 500 in this section.  That's Highland Park but they have a loss to Richfield but a win over Simley.  Simley has a win over Richfield.  Holy Angels is the other team in that mix but they've lost to the top 3.  I vote Highland Park, Simley, Richfield, Holy Angels.

SECTION 4AAA: Mahtomedi looks to be the 1 seed here unless Totino-Grace can jump up and make the head-head win meaningful.  I put Johnson behind Columbia Heights.  Fridley has lost 6 of 7 including a loss to Heights.  St. Anthony has beaten up a weak schedule but despite being 17-6, I don't see a home game.  The big loss to Fridley is a killer there.

SECTION 6AAA: We went over this earlier in the week.  Delano can't be any lower than 2.  Henry and Orono I see fighting for 5 and 6 based on their upcoming game. Benilde-St. Margaret's and De La Salle will be very interesting discussions.  Still lots to happen here.

SECTION 1AAAA: Lakeville North is the top seed now but if they lose to Apple Valley and Shakopee coming up that makes it more interesting.  Especially if Rochester John Marshall can knock off Red Wing on the final night.  Those are the top 2.  The rest slots pretty easily.  Lakeville South head-head over New Prague head-head over Farmington head-head over Owatonna.

SECTION 2AAAA: Shakopee and Chaska will be the top 2 seeds here.  Shakopee still has Lakeville North and Apple Valley left.  Chaska has 2 other top Metro West teams left so the top spot still up for grabs.  I'll take the 3 Lake teams in order of finish for the next spots.  Jefferson falls to 6.

SECTION 3AAAA: Apple Valley and Eastview are the only 2 teams above 500 here.

SECTION 4AAAA: CDH takes the top seed if they win out.  If they lose to Mounds View and Tartan wins out, then you have a debate.  But the weak Metro East really hurts Tartan and NSP.   Tartan's last non-conference game against Edina would do wonders.  Note that Woodbury already has a 5 point win over Edina as a point of comparison.  What about the Fighting Janquarts.  They could still run the table and sweep the Metro East.  You have to reward that.

SECTION 5AAAA: Maple Grove's win over Champlin Park means there's little debate about Osseo being the top seed here.  Champlin Park and Mounds View go 2 and 3.  A Mounds View win over CDH on Tuesday would make that debate much more interesting.  Park Center gets the final home game.

SECTION 6AAAA: Hopkins and Wayzata go 1 and 2.  Armstrong's head-head loss to Wayzata on opening night keeps them out of the top 2 but they do have head-head wins over Cooper and St. Louis Park.  That means they're pretty locked into the 3 seed.  St. Louis Park and Cooper fighting thru a tough final 2 weeks in the Metro West for that last home game.

SECTION 7AAAA: Blaine has all the head-head wins and power ranking to be the top seed.  St. Francis has wins over Duluth East and Forest Lake to take the 2.  Forest Lake just knocked off Duluth East for 3.  The rest slots per NW Suburban standings and Cambridge-Isanti last.

SECTION 8AAAA: Maple Grove clearly 1st.  Elk River has wins over the other teams so they are a clear 2nd. Brainerd's win over Rogers and loss to Elk River puts them 3rd.  Rogers beat St. Cloud Tech so they get the final home game and the rematch with Tech in round 1.

NW Suburban Bragging Rights

Prologue
To Champlin Park to see the #4AAAA Rebels in their only regular season meeting against fellow NW Suburban division leader #6AAAA Maple Grove.  With Maple Grove's move to section 8, the only way we'll see these 2 matchup again is at state.  Hollywood is on duty tonight.  Him and a partner not only do varsity but they get the JV game as well.  Ugh.  But at least I still haven't see Lithgow this season.  Its Jersey Night for the Champlin Park student section.  Lots of fun grading those (Washington Bullets, solid.  Vikings Favre Jersey, terrible) and interacting with the kids at halftime.  The ticker was lonely so we kept that happy with a solid hot dog and a bottle of battery acid Coke.  Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard and Minnesota assistant Ben Johnson in the building.

Game Time:
Quick start for Champlin Park.  McKinley Wright for 3, a hoop after a Theo John block and a putback.  Marcus Hill ventures coast to coast for 2 hoops.  13-5 Rebels just over 4 minutes in to the game.  Maple Grove gets a pair of Jack Hutchinson hoops as they cut the lead to 2.  Then its Josiah Strong off the Champlin Park bench with a triplicate of 3s.  Its a 1 point Rebels lead when McKinley Wright picks up his 2nd foul.  Theo John picks up his 2nd just after that.  That allows Maple Grove to rally.  Taron Pickford drives for 2 and makes 2 free throws.  Brad Davison to the rim for 2 more and he finds Reed Nikko over the top of the 1-3-1 zone for a dunk.  31-24 Maple Grove up at the 5 minute mark after a 16-5 run.  That run forced coach Tuchscherer's hand into bringing Wright and John back in the game just before the run ended.  John picks up a cheap 3rd and has to sit the last 4:27 of the half.  Nikko gets his 2nd and sits the last 3:52 of the half.  Davison with a 3 and Wright with a nasty full court drive and crossover.  38-31 Maple Grove at the half.

Theo John stays on the bench for the 1st 4:34 minutes of the 2nd half.  Wright with 2 quick hoops and Chris Davis (John's backup) with a putback to cut the margin to 3.  But Nikko dunks and Davison buries a 3 before John returns.  45-37 Maple Grove leading at that point.  Brian Smith with a floater over Nikko and John to the lefty finish against Nikko.  47-44 Maple Grove 10:15 to play.  Davison would control the game from that point.  He drives for 2 and makes a free throw.  After a John faceup jumper.  Its Davison driving off the high ball screen for 2 more then converting a backbreaking 3 point play with 2:44 left.  57-48 Maple Grove. Maple Grove slow on offense during this period but they hold Champlin Park to 1 field goal in an 8 minute stretch.  The rest is free throws.  Maple Grove gets a high quality road win 65-58.

Post Game:
For Champlin Park, McKinley Wright leads the way with 20 points.  Theo John adds 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.  Soph guard Josiah Strong with a hot 1st half with all 11 of his points off the Rebels bench.  Champlin Park looked like they wanted to mix in some zone but couldn't get in it after falling behind midway through the 1st half.  Champlin Park falls to 17-4 overall, 13-2 in the NW Suburban.  They are still in control of the North division.  They host a fast rising Eden Prairie team next Wednesday.  That should be very interesting.

Maple Grove improves to 19-3 overall, 13-2 in the Northwest Suburban. Brad Davison another outstanding night with 26 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists on my sheet. He controlled the pace of the game.  Also liked how he smartly used his body to keep defenders on a hip or behind him as he was driving to score.  Reed Nikko added 12 points, Taron Pickford 10.  The 2nd half stagnant offense reminded me of their struggles vs Wayzata last year (nothing but high pick and roll and no movement).  The loss of Tywhon Pickford really shows there.  But Champlin Park's helpside defense was not good at all against the drive.  Maple Grove stays 2 games behind Osseo in the West division and host Osseo on the final night of the season.  Next week they are at Totino-Grace and host Armstrong.

Wolves take down the Tri-Hawks

Prologue
Back to The Mall to see Minnesota Transitions host Trinity in a non-conference matchup.  Sparse crowd on hand.  Strange that it was a varsity only event with no JV game.  That means there's plenty of time for Target shopping ahead of time.  OK, maybe not but at least there are options to kill time.   I didn't even smuggle in any concessions.

Game Time:
Trinity very deliberate on offense early in the game against the MTS 2-3 zone.  Meanwhile MTS with 4 early 3s as they showed patience too.  Eamon Naughton 2 hoops to provide Trinity with some offense.  14 all at the 6:55 mark.  All MTS the rest of the half.  Caleb Rush for 3.  Bryce Mills a steal for 2 and his own triple.  A late putback is the last score of the half for MTS.  It concludes a 14-2 run over the last 6:25.  28-16 MTS at the half.

Trinity would rally with a 9-1 run to start the 2nd half.  Eddie Maruggi came off the bench in the 1st half.  But he started the 2nd half and produced a layup off a turnover and knocked down a jumper.  McNaughton with 2 free throws to end that run and it cuts the lead to 4.  But MTS pulls away.  Rush with another 3, Mills for 2, Trinity misses a dunk and its a MTS drive for 2 more.  Isaiah Williams adds bonus free throws to end the 12-3 MTS run.  41-28 MTS with 5:34 left.  Trinity scores the next 6 to gain momentum.  But a pretty backcut from Aaron Martin nets a layup and pushes the lead back to 9 with 3:42 left.  MTS takes 3 quick shots and Trniity cuts the lead to 5 with 1:39 left.  Williams with another backcut for a layup.  Naughton hits a 3 to cut it to 4 but Trinity is out of time.  Williams with 2 free throws and a layup to seal it.  MTS wins 49-41.

Post Game
For Trinity, Luke Lodoen leads the way with 14 points.  Eamon Naughton with 12.  Eddie Maruggi with all 8 of his points in the 2nd half.  Trinity going very young with 5 sophs and 3 freshmen seeing time with 4 upperclassmen.  The youngsters had difficulty finding their offense.  The upperclassmen with 34 of the 41 team points.  They were patient which was good but they did leave some open shots out there.  Trinity falls to 6-15 overall and they are 3-8 in the MCAA.  They play at Bethany on Saturday afternoon with 3rd place in the MCAA South on the line.

For MTS, Isaiah Williams with 2 early 3s and 10 first half points.  Then 4 points to put the game on ice.  He finished with 19 points.  Bryce Mills with 10.  Patient offense from MTS using their simple triangle game but they got a couple nice backcuts out of it that were back breakers.  They go to PACT and host Edison next week.  MTS improves to 7-11 overall.  MTS looking at a mid-level seed in section 4A and should get a Round of 16 home game.

Wildcats win critical section matchup

Prologue
To Minneapolis Henry where the #9AAA Patriots hosts #6AAA Waconia in an important 6AAA matchup.  Henry already with a critical loss to another Wright County team, New Prague, this season.  Smallish crowd on hand but we do get De La Salle head man Dave Thorson looking ahead to sections.  No concessions so the beverage counter remains lonely.

6 in row from Henry break a 5 all tie and force a Waconia timeout at the 14:07 mark.  Josh Rands with 3 early 3s on his way to the 1st 11 Waconia points.  He buries another 3 and its Waconia on top 18-15 at the 10:15 mark.  The Wildcats run is 13-4.  Jordan Lynn with a pair of hoops for Henry.  But Waconia keeps raining 3s.  Joey Korteum with one and Connor Schultz with 3 of them.  Waconia getting those trailing the break or on kickouts.  33-29 Waconia at 3:45.  Julian Jackson 2 hoops to counter yet another Rands triple.  Henry goes to the break up 40-38.  Waconia 8 triples in the half.

Rands 2 more 3s and another Korteum 3.  Jackson counters that with a hoop and then he makes a pair of free throws at the 12:34 mark.  That puts him over 1000 points (not in the game, that would be a record) for his high school career.  51-49 Waconia with the lead.  Then the Wildcats pull away.  Korteum 4 free throws and a drive, soph forward Nick Fulford a 3 point play, forward Jordan Notch with a pretty reverse layup and he scores in the post.  The Waconia run is 15-2 for a 66-51 lead inside 8 minutes to play.  Jordan Lynn with a pair of hoops and a free throw to keep Henry within 70-58 with 4:44 left.  Demetrius Edwards-Brown with 2 late 3s and a free throw but Henry can't rally.  Waconia makes 10 straight free throws to seal it.  Waconia wins 91-72.

Post Game:
Julian Jackson with 21 points inside and Demetrius Edwards-Brown 21 outside to lead Henry.  Jordan Lynn adds 13.  Henry did have some success trying to get the ball inside and pounding the offensive glass.  But getting to shooters was a problem.  Then they give up the 1 big run right after the Jackson 1000 pt free throw.  That run was the difference.  Henry falls to 17-6 overall.  They are 9-2 in the Minneapolis City.  They visit Como Park on Friday.  Then a trip to rival North next Thursday.

Josh Rands lights it up for Waconia with 27 points.  He made 7 of Waconia's 12 3s on the night.  Joey Korteum 2 3s and 21 points.  15 of those came in the 2nd half.  Connor Schultz 3 triples and 13 points from his big man spot.  Quality 5 man motion from Waconia.  Nice job finding guys trailing the break, or driving and throw back to the same spot for open 3s.  Waconia is now 16-5 overall.    The Wildcats are 4-2 in the Wright County East but done with the 1 of the 2 league leaders (Delano).  Rival Holy Family visits on Friday.

Section 6AAA Race
What a race we have in loaded section 6AAA.  Mound-Westonka and Blake clearly get 7 and 8.  Henry due to losses to New Prague and Waconia right now still has to sit at 6.  The rest is a real mess.  If you seed the 3 Wright County teams right now it has to go Delano, Waconia and Orono.  Then what do you do with Benilde-St. Margaret's?  They beat Waconia and De La Salle but lost to Orono.    I don't think you can put Delano any lower than 2 right now.  De La Salle's doesn't have any head-to-head matchups in section play besides the Benilde-St. Margaret's loss (no Goanar Mar).  But you can't discount the losses are all quality and they have nice out of state wins (Milwaukee Washington and La Crosse Central).  Orono has the most to gain with games remaining against New Prague, Delano, Waconia and Henry.  Though the Delano game is the final night and seeding might be done by then.
