A hot winter Saturday

Prologue
One of the great joys for me is a Saturday where I can bounce from place to place and see many teams in many places.  Today was one of those days.  We start with a morning opener in a full day event.  Then one appointment viewing games of the season for the matinee.  Then a season wouldn't be complete without a Saturday game at the Target Center.

Game 1: St. Agnes 76 Metro Schools College Prep 65
This was the 1st varsity game of the day as part of the event held at Hiawatha.  Brian Sandifer putting on the games. That means 2 things.  1st is a camo outfit.  Check!  2nd is Walking Tacos.  You know I'm all about devouring one of those.  This one was a struggle.  MSCP would make 6 timely 3s to drive their offense.  St. Agnes couldn't take advantage of 18 1st half MSCP turnovers.  But the Aggies would score the last 5 points of the half to knot the game up at 35.  They continue that momentum with the 1st 3 buckets of the 2nd half for an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.  They were to attack the rim at will for easy points.  De'Vaun Simmons leads the Aggies with 22 points.  Paul Plasch adds 18.  No roster available for MSCP.

Game 3: Two Rivers 63 St. Francis 49
We'll comeback to the big afternoon session in a minute.  The night session was a nice turnout at Target Center for the end of a full day of hoops there.  Two Rivers using a 12-3 first half run to take a 6 point lead to the break.  They'd extend that to double digits in the 2nd half.  But 6 triples from the Saints would cut that margin to 7 midway thru the half.  But only 1 FG the rest of the way for St. Francis.  8 turnovers a big part of that.  They couldn't get anything in the paint where Two Rivers ended with a huge advantage.  Jaden Morgan with 12 of his 17 in the 2nd half.  Matt Bothun 14 of his 18 in the 1st half for St. Francis.  Derek Stone 4 of his 5 3s in the 2nd half to try to keep the Saints close.  He finishes with 17 points.  But only 14 points from the rest of the roster.

Game 2: #2AA Caledonia 68 #1AAA Totino-Grace 67
Now to one of the biggest games of the season as Caledonia makes the trip north.  TG gets off to an 11-4 lead thanks to a pair of Taison Chatman triples.  Caledonia claws their way back to 14 all with a couple Jackson Koepke bombs.  Chatman sits at the 9:15 mark with his 2nd foul and won't return for the rest of the half.  TG goes on a huge run with out him to break open a 3 point game.  Patrick Bath working inside for 3 hoops along with a couple from Ahjany Lee.  Eli King with only 1 FG in the stretch as TG goes on a 25-8 run over the last 7:59.  50-30 TG up at the break.

Caledonia regroups and scores the 1st 7 of the second half to stay within striking distance.  Demarion Watson with a bucket to keep the lead at 13 with 11 minutes left, 58-45.  Caledonia for 3 to cut the lead to 60-51 with 9:23 left and we have a MoKiller timeout.  To this point Eli King not shooting well and only 8 points.  But this was his time to shine and did he ever.  He'll score to cut the margin to 7.  Totino-Grace then gets super sloppy and turns it over on 9 of their next 10 trips.  King dunks 2 of those.  Then he gets blocked trying to convert another of those.  While still in the air on the attempt and falling out of bounds, he saves the ball back in.  He'll get it back for a left corner 3.  Warriors all the back as that triple puts them ahead 64-62 with 3:45 left.  That's a 19-4 run over 7:15

Tie game at 64 as we get get very late.  The teams trade turnovers before King is fouled and makes both ends of the bonus with 56.7 left.  Chatman right back for TG as he goes strong for 2 and the foul with 45.8 left. He'll make the free throw for a 67-66 TG lead.  Caledonia goes iso for King who gets stopped and smartly gives it up.  The weak shot attempt is blocked and TG has it back.  But they miss a front end with 26.3 left.  Caledonia will go right away.  Its King with a ridiculously tough left wing fade away for the lead with 12 seconds left. WOW!  (The highlight is in my twitter feed, thanks to my fellow Bill Walton idolizer for that).  TG will go right away too and not take a timeout.  Chatman drives and kicks to Demarion Watson in the right corner for a 3.  Its around and out, Ahjany Lee's tip at the buzzer won't go in.  Warriors hold TG to 17 points in the 2nd half and pull off the improbable comeback to win by 1.  They never had more than a 2 point lead.  Eli King had a poor shooting day but scored 13 of his 21 points in the last 9 minutes.  He added 9 rebounds and a handful of assists on my officially unofficial sheet. Jackson Koepke adds 3 triples and 13 points for the Warriors.  Demarion Watson 14 of his 20 points and all 4 triples in the 1st half to lead TG.  Taison Chatman adds 13 but overall was very quiet with 6 of those right off the bat and the late 3 point play.  TG 15 TO for 18 points in the second half while shooting 33.3% in the half.  TG only converts 1 of the 8 Caledonia TO in the 2nd half into points.  Will be hard not to vote for this as the best game I saw all season when its all said and done.

2022 Border Battle Review

The 15th edition of the Border Battle is in the books.  Here some of the sights and sounds from the day

Game 1: Maranatha Christian 74 Rice Lake 48
Rice Lake running some of the same offense we saw in the late game from Brookfield East.  A 20-2 run right before the end of the 1st half sends MCA to the break up 34-14 and no trouble from there.  Maranatha just too big and athletic.  They hold Rice Lake star Tyler Orr to 7 points.  Rice Lake shoots 3-21 from 3.  They turn it over 20 times for 28 MCA points.  Bailey McDonald leads MCA with 16 poitns.

Game 2: #6 D1 Eau Claire Memorial 84 Richfield 63
Mitchell January 12 early points and its Richfield opening a 30-21 lead.  All Old Abes after that.  Richfield goes a stretch of 31 possessions with only 2 field goals.  The end of that stretch also ends a 29-3 Eau Claire Memorial run that started the 2nd half.  That took a 3 point halftime deficit and turned it into a blowout.  Memorial goes 5-7 from 3 during the run and 10-16 from 3 in the 2nd half.  They finish 14-28 from deep for the game.  Mitchell January leads all scorers with 24 points for Richfield.  Mekhi Shaw leads Eau Claire Memorial with 20 and tons of support from role guys.

Game 3: #2 D2 Pewaukee 78 Robbinsdale Armstrong 52
This one was over quicker than I could give the Kevin Garnett suit speech about Armstrong's awful uniforms with blue numbers on black.  Pewaukee hits 8 of their 1st 12 3s to open the game on a 35-7 run.  They only hit 3 of their next 17 attempts from deep but it didn't matter after the start. Armstrong shoots 1-11 from 3 and 10-30 in the 1st half to trail 46-22 at the break.  Hillsdale commit Ashton Janowski leads Pewaukee with 4 triples and 25 points.  Gopher offered Milan Momcilovic adds 15 showing a high skill level.  Ben Johnson arriving quickly after the Gophers win to watch the day's stars including Momcilovic.  Peyton Newbern leads Armstrong with 15.

Game 4: #5 D1 Menomonee Falls 83 #1AAA Totino-Grace 70
The head to head matchup of Taison Chatman and Seth Trimble did not disappoint.  Add in the wing matchup of Demarion Watson and Steven Clay and this one was a joy to watch.  Totino-Grace would take a 59-50 lead midway thru the 2nd half.  Falls would respond with a 21-3 run with Watson on the bench with 4 fouls for lots of it.  Seth Trimble goes off for 35 points getting to the rim at will.  Clay adds 27.  Chatman with 22, Watson with 21 and a feisty battle with Clay.  TG held Falls to 42 points in their 1st 45 trips.  Falls scores on 19 of their 21 trips of the game for 41 points starting just before Watson's 4th foul with 11:01 left.

Game 5: #1 D2 Wisconsin Lutheran 78 4AA Minnehaha Academy 60
This game was tied at 15 early thanks to a strong start from Prince Aligbe with 9 points and 2 assists for triples.  Aligbe quiets down and its all Wisconsin Lutheran after that as they go on a 21-2 run to blow the game open.  Jamiir Allen too quick from the point guard spot.  He leads the run with 8 straight points and finishes with 21 points.  Top soph Kon Knueppel with a quiet 17 points including 3 triples.  Prince Aligbe 23 points but much of his damage was early.  Rolyns Aligbe adds 16.  The rest of the roster is incredibly young with 4 freshman and a soph seeing time.

Game 6: #1AA Minneapolis North 62 Brookfield East 59
Let's save the most drama for last.  Brookfield East did a fantastic job taking care of the ball with only 8 TO and most of those were when North switched to a halfcourt 1-2-2 zone.  East made quick adjustments to deal with it.  North's shooting gets them the win.  Willie Wilson and D'Meiko Anderson heat up in the 2nd half.  North goes on a 14-2 run in the 2nd half to claim the lead but this one goes right to the end.  Wilson 7 in a row with a clutch 3 and then putting back a miss off a turnover.  That ties the game.  Brookfield East misses a layup and that gives North 1 final chance.  They'll hold for the last minute.  Out of a timeout, let's find a hot hand.  Its Anderson with the step back from the top with 3.3 left to break a 59 all tie and win it.  Anderson and Wilson lead the Polars with 19 points.  Gani Stevens scoreless and didn't play a ton.  Very surprising considering his counterpart Nollenn Tabaska had all 12 of his points inside in the 2nd half.  Dan Gherezgher and Matt Schmainda with 4 3s and 16 points each for Brookfield East.  North shoots 10-21 from 3 to match the 10-33 shooting from East.  East actually won the points off of turnovers 13-11.

2023 Border Battle
Wisconsin wins this year's edition 4-2.  That wasn't surprising as they had the deeper field of teams.  Minnesota is now 54-37 all time and they've won 9 of the 15 events. 2022 Border Battle Preview

The Border Battle is back and its back in Minnesota with Minneapolis North hosting 6 games.  Minnesota has won 5 of the last 6 editions with a record of 29-11 since 2015. That has broke open what was an even series.  Minnesota leads the all-time series 51-34 going back to the 1st year at Tartan in 2007.  Since attending that 1st Border Battle, this will be now be my 10th Border Battle.  Its a loaded Wisconsin crew against a lesser Minnesota group.  Records listed are thru Thursday 1/20/22.

Game 1: Rice Lake (8-3) vs Maranatha Christian (9-3)
Junior guard Tyler Orr leads Rice Lake with 24.3 PPG.  He matches up with a talented guard crew for Maranatha.    Senior Jeremiah LaVelle averages almost 19 PPG.  Junior Bailey McDonald averages 16.3 PPG.  Maranatha plugs in a bunch of interchangeable pieces around them.  MCA will want to play fast and its a very 1 on 1 style.  They've won 8 games in a row and sit at the top of the Skyline standings. Rice Lake is 3rd in the Big Rivers behind fellow Border Battle member Eau Claire Memorial who beat them in a close game on opening night.  Both teams playing on a quick turnaround with Friday night games.

Czar's Pick: Sleeper game of the day.  I'll take Rice Lake here.

Game 2: #6 D1 Eau Claire Memorial (12-2) vs Richfield (4-5)
Memorial forward Will Boser (17.8 PPG) leads a quality trio.  He'll play at Concordia-St. Paul next year.  6'8 forward LJ Wells leads the team with 20.8 PPG.  Guard Mekhi Shaw adds 12.5 PPG.  Richfield has a nice trio of their own with PG Mitchell January (20.7 PPG), PF Jaden Wollmuth (13.9 PPG) and wing Jaedyn Patterson (15 PPG).  Too much firepower from Memorial here.

Czar's Pick: Eau Claire Memorial

Game 3: #2 D2 Pewaukee (9-2) vs Robbinsdale Armstrong (5-6)
Pewaukee is absolutely stacked.  They have 2 D2 committed guards in Ashton Janowski (17.2PPG) and Josh Terrian (11.9 PPG).  A top 50 national player in Wisconsin's top junior Milan Momcilovic, a versatile forward who averages 17.5 PPG.  And ho hum another top 5 Wisconsin sophomore in guard Nick Janowski and his team high 20.9 PPG who could be a high major player too.  Senior Peyton (16.9 PPG) and Soph Seth Newbern (8.9 PPG) lead Armstrong along with wing Owen Skram (11.2 PPG).  Pewaukee way too much here.

Game 4: #1 D2 Wisconsin Lutheran (12-1) vs #4AA Minnehaha Academy (3-4)
Wisconin Lutheran is another loaded squad.  Soph Kon Knueppel (16.2 PPG) is the top sophomore in WI and has Minnesota and Wisconsin offers.  Prentice Young, Landon Key and Jamiir Allen are 3 talented juniors to go with him.  Senior guard Jordan Glenn leads the team with 17 PPG.  Prince Aligbe is averaging 24.6 PPG.  He might need to average 50 PPG to carry the offense now that Mercy Miller is off to Oak Hill.  This one could get ugly.

Czar's Pick: Wisconsin Lutheran

Game 5: #5 D1 Menomonee Falls (11-2) vs #1AAA Totino-Grace (9-2)
This is the game of the day and not just because of the high profile PG matchup between North Carolina commit Seth Trimble (25.5 PPG) and Taison Chatman.(11 PPG).  Steven Clay is a top 10 WI senior who is a D1 talent.  He averages 16.6 PPG.  His matchup with Demarion Watson and his team high 14.7 PPG is also going to be a joy to watch.  How TG responds to the quick turnaround after their big comeback win over #1AAAA Park Center is a question here.

Czar's Pick: Totino-Grace

Game 6: Brookfield East (5-9) at #1AA Minneapolis North (9-3)
North's pressure D vs the Brookfield East screening offense (think Cambridge-Isanti) is going to be a joy to watch.  This Joe Rux crew is down from their normal high standards.  But they still have a D2 level perimeter player in Dan Gherezgher (17.5 PPG).  Guard Matt Schmainda (16.4 PPG) is the other player to watch.  Willie Wilson leads a talented squad of guards for North with 15.2 PPG.  Gani Stevens anchors the interior with 9.8 PPG.

MLK Adventures 2021

Prologue
Great to see the return of MLK events to the local calendar.  This year the Minnesota Black Basketball Coaches Association put on the MLK Cultural Games.  This was scheduled to be 4 games at Macalester but ended up being 3 games at Benilde-St. Margaret's.  That took up the day session.  Then the night session for me was a battle of recent powers in the Skyline Conference.

Game 1: St. Paul Central 86 Cambridge-Isanti 77
Biggest story here was Central freshman Allan Langford.  He sliced thru Cambridge's porous defense for 27 points to lead all scorers in this one.  Kobe Karels and Braden Jones 21 points, Ethan Dee adds 20 for Cambridge-Isanti.  Central bench productive in this one.  Their use of THE WORLD'S WORST OFFENSE not so much with a couple of quick turnovers using it.  Cambridge-Isanti only 12-40 from 3 and with their long range style and poor defense, that's just not good enough.

Game 2: #1AAAA Park Center 76 Duluth East 29
Now we get to talk defense.  Park Center defensively took apart the Greyhounds in this one.  17-11 early before Duluth East goes almost 15 minutes with just 1 field goal.  28-5 run by the Pirates to start the 2nd half blows the doors off.  Duluth 19 turnovers and 13 shots in the 2nd half.  Overall 28 turnovers for 39 Park Center points.  Park Center only turned it over on their last offensive possession before holding it to run out the clock.  Duluth East unable to get into any kind of offense all day.  10 different Pirates end up scoring.  Cody Pennebaker with 19, Braeden Carrington with 12 to lead Park Center.  Isaac Nyakundi with 15 points to lead Duluth East.  When Park Center got a 2nd guy to him, then it got very difficult.

Game 3: #1AA Minneapolis North 84 East Grand Forks 33
The beatdowns will continue until morale improves!  This day was a blue wave, not a green wave sadly for East Grand Forks.  North uses a 24-0 run in the 1st half to blow the game open.  Mario Sanders taking advantages of turnovers on his way to a team high 15 points.  All of those in the 1st half.  22 Green Wave turnovers lead to 30 Polars plunges.  North's defensive pressure enough to not need Gani Stevens on the offensive end.

Game 4: Maranatha 64 St. Croix Prep 54
St. Croix Prep's 5 out pass and cut along with some curl actions saw some nice success in this one.  That gave them a 38-18 interior edge.  But timely 3s from Maranatha (12-25 on the night, 6-9 in the 2nd half) put them over the top.  Isaiah Bluford with 2 bombs in a stretch that pushed the lead to 19 in the 2nd half.  SCPA would rally to single digits but too big of a mountain to climb.  Jeremiah LaVelle with some timely late scoring to keep the lead for MCA.  He scores 17.  Big night for Bailey McDonald with 24 for the Mustangs with most of his damage in the 1st half and early in the 2nd half.  Peyton Gremmels with 14 of his 16 in the 2nd half for Prep as he led the Lions comeback attempt.  4 starters in double figures for Prep but no points from their bench.  Maranatha got 5 of their 12 3s from the bench.  Thanks to their 3s, they lose FG% but win EFG%   Maranatha's offense very 1 on 1 oriented but they have shot makers in LaVelle, McDonald and the Bluford twins.  St. Croix Prep 3-3 in the Skyline, all wins at home, all loses on the road.  Maranatha stays undefeated in the Skyline, 1 game ahead of New Life Academy and 1 loss ahead of Concordia.

Slam dunking a Saturday

Prologue
A couple of notable setups on the local schedule today caught my eye.  The obvious setup was the rescheduled Breakdown games at Hamline.  Good setup there.  Then the rescheduled Hall of Fame classic with a chance to catch Lakeville South for the 1st time this year as they took on Andover.  While the pizza at Hamline is always worth getting, there is some sorrow.  Always hard to not be at my hometown event, the Midwest Players Classic.  Especially if they still have the Big Boar BBQ going.  Minneapolis North got a win there today over a Milwaukee Carmen team that I saw play at Hamline over my holiday break.

Game 1: Lakeville South 71 Andover 61
The Hall of Fame Classic was intended to be at ARCC today but wasn't held.  So the 2 local games were held at Spring Lake Park.  The other one, Morris vs Enderlin (ND) was held at Morris.  Andover couldn't get their shooting going in this one going only 6-29 from 3.  Too much Avery Mast with 24 points for Lakeville South.  Big run from Jackson Ressler scoring all 11 of his 1st half points in a row (3 triples) to help the Cougars take the lead and keep it.  Sammy Musungu 17 points for Andover.  The toughness of that Andover backcourt (Musungu/Kopetzki) is really a joy to watch.

This was a makeup from the Granite City Classic.  What a way to start the in person viewing for the day.  Orono jumped out to a 7 point lead and then a 17-4 Princeton run would put them on top.  Orono tie the game right away in the 2nd half but an 8-0 Princeton run put them back on top.  Orono down 4 late but Sebastian Loder for 3 cuts it to 1 with 1:40 left.  The lead is 3 late, Orono with a chance to tie.  Straight away 3 is blocked but Orono grabs it and finds Kyle Kallenbach in the right corner for a game tying 3 with under 20 seconds left.  Princeton fouled with 7 seconds left and misses both.  Loder takes the ball end to end and lays it in at the horn for the improbable win.  Loder with 19 of his 23 in the 2nd half.  Isaiah Hagen adds 16 for the Spartans.  Cooper Drews 17, Haydn Stay 16, Cooper Nowak 14 to lead Princeton.  Stay and Drews are really fun forwards to watch as they handle, cut and shoot it.  Add in a rock solid point guard in Nowak and Princeton is going to be a very tough out in the tourney.  Princeton 8-19 at the charity stripe and 17 turnovers.  Orono overcomes 9-32 shooting from 3 to steal a win.  Orono all over the offensive glass for a 19-4 edge in 2nd chance points.  Would not expect that against the Princeton size.

Game 2: #4AAA South St. Paul 72 Mound-Westonka 55
This game was a planned non-conference game for today so they just switched the location.  The final score in this one is a bit misleading as Mound had the lead down to 5 late before the Packers finished the game on a 14-2 run.  Mound-Westonka tried to play 1-2-2 zone to slow down the high powered SSP offense.  The Packers respond by shooting 8-13 from 3 in the 1st half to lead by 8 at the break.  Alonzo Dodd keeps the engine rolling with 22 points and 12 boards on my sheet.  Devin Newsome 16.  Shawn West-Zimpel 13 points and 3 triples off the bench.  Max Swanson 15 to lead Mound-Westonka.  Jason Spaeth with 11 of his 13 in the 1st half.  He reached the 1000 career points mark with his 1st basket of the game.

Game 3: #1AAA Totino-Grace 101 Cretin-Derham Hall 84
This was intended to be the showcase game of the Tipoff Classic.  First half story was Ahjany Lee.  He dominates the offensive glass for 17 points in the half.  Where was this player the last 12 months?  41-28 TG at the break.  The game changes at the 12:48 mark.  Taison Chatman fouled hard going to the rim.  We get a technical as well.  Chatman makes all 4 FTs and then buries a straight away 3 on the possession.  7 point trip.  Left wing 3, yes.  Right wing 3, yes.  13 points in a minute and 20 seconds.  Left corner 3, yes.  Left wing, gimme that too.  Another one straight away.  WHY NOT!  Those 6 triples come in 8 trips down the floor.  Blowout city 75-50 TG leading with 9:15 left.

Tre Holloman struggled with his shot in the 1st half but still had 4 assists.  He keeps the assists going but his offense comes to life.  He scores 17 points in the last 7 minutes  But they aren't meaningful as the size of Lee and Patrick Bath attacks the rim with little resistance.  Tre Holloman leads all scorers with 36 points and roughly 9 assists on my sheet.  Donavhan Cain adds 6 triples and 28 points.  But they get no help.  I love the action they'll run for Cain with him ghosting a ball screen for Holloman.

Taison Chatman with one of the more electric shooting games you'll see.  20 points and 6 triples in the blink of an eye in the 2nd half.  He finishes with 7 triples and 29 points.  These weren't come off screens for catch and shoot 3s.  These were off ball screens or just straight 1 on 1 create spaces 3s.  Ahjany Lee with 17 of his 25 points in the 1st half.  That's the type of interior play that can make TG the really elite team we expected.  Tommy Humphries 17, Demarion Watson 14, Patrick Bath 11 (all 2nd half).  While TG did switch a bunch, I really loved their plan of putting Watson on Holloman.  That length takes away some of the postup and attacking options that Holloman has.

Opening the New Year Right

Prologue
What a wonderful way to ring in the first Saturday of the new year.  A top ranked city rivalry, an important section matchup with a high major recruit and one of the state's best teams testing itself against a top Midwest program.  That's my kind of day.

Game 1: #1AA Minneapolis North 91 #2AAA De La Salle 76
North breaks open a chippy affair in the 2nd half.  Soph PG Datrell McCrimmon off the bench his all 4 of his 3s and scores 14 of his 18 points in the 2nd half to help the Polars pull away.  Unlike the other 3 games I've seen, the Polars shoot 7-15 from 3.  That helps overcome Gani Stevens foul trouble.  He sat the last 15 minutes of the first half with 2 fouls.  He also got a long rest early in the second half.  Willie Wilson scores 19 points and wins the point guard battle with Cash Chavis.  Nasir Whitlock scores 21 of his 27 for De La Salle in the 2nd half but a majority of those were after the outcome was already determined.  Kyle Johnson with 20 points and 4 3s.  The Islanders played without soph guard Randy McClendon.  Not like an Islanders team to give up 60 points in a half.  That's what North put up in the 2nd half today.

Game 2: Edina 70 Bloomington Jefferson 57
Back and forth first half in this game too as I arrive midway thru the half to see The Scribe and Charlie Murphy working.  But fear not my loyal peasants, the Czar's vast wealth gets the video so you have Czar Insights below.  Edina sees a double digit lead close to 2 with about 3 minutes left.  With Sammy Presthus out, soph Kole Hanson takes on an even bigger role and he's handling it well.  20 points for him today.  He makes 6 free throws and a clutch 3 as a big piece of slamming the door.  The Hornets score 15 of the last 19 points of the game.  Too much Brady Helgren with 13 points in each half for 26 total.  Daniel Freitag leading Jefferson with 17 points.  Another solid outing for Hayden Holland with 16 points.  Edina big advantages at the charity stripe and on the offensive glass.

Game 3: #5 4A Chicago Whitney Young (IL) 75 #1AAA Totino-Grace 67
Now a fun regional showcase with Chicago Whitney Young and star forward AJ Casey (Miami commit) making the trek north.  TG shoots 8-13 from 3 in the 1st half.  That includes 5 makes in the last 6+ minutes to break open a tie game.  Demarion Watson with 4 of those in the best shooting performance I've seen from him.  AJ Casey out the last 4:14 with a cut on his head.  Junior guard Dalen Davis picking up the slack with 14 first half points including 8 of the last 9 for the Dolphins.  Patrick Bath with a tip finish off a BLOB just before half.  Totino-Grace up 38-28 at the half.

Watson 2 more quick triples and he'll add a finish at the rim.  52-40 TG keeping the lead at double digits with 12:20 to play.  Whitney Young counters with points on their next 7 trips for a 14-4 run.  Davis 2 buckets in that spurt.  TG lead is cut to 56-54 but Watson answers with another 3.  59-54 TG with 7:40 left.  Davis converts a turnover and the lead is down to 1 to force a TG timeout.  Out of the timeout, its a feed inside to Bath who converts another post bucket.  63-60 TG 5:23 left.

This is another game that ends with a 15-4 and this time its for the road team.  TG misses a front end and then the next 2 possessions are turnovers that become layups.  Davis converts the 2nd for a 64-63 Whitney Young lead with 3:50 left.  After a Taison Chatman bucket puts TG back ahead, Northern Illinois commit Xavier Amos counters with 2 putbacks.  Ahjany Lee keeps TG within 1 with a putback of his own.  Its Casey on the drive, he kicks to the corner and its the extra pass that finds Davis for a right wing 3 with 1:27 left.  71-67 Dolphins and TG doesn't score again.  He adds 4 bonus free throws to close it out.  Dalen Davis steals the show with 31 points, 17 in the 2nd half and 7 in the last 90 seconds to close it out.  Xavier Amos with 14 points, AJ Casey adds 12.  Demarion Watson leads Totino-Grace with 23 points and 7 3s.  Patrick Bath with an effective 14 point game.  Taison Chatman adds 12.  After starting 10-16 from 3, TG missed 10 of their last 11 3s over the last 12+ minutes.  TG got some very good things when they went to Euro ballscreen offense.  But they had plenty of 1 on 1 quick midrange shot moments too that weren't effective.  Whitney Young scored on their last 7 trips before holding the final possession.
