Eagles out muscle the Aggies for cookies

Prologue
To St. Agnes for my 1st viewing of the season of New Life Academy.  Its the last game before Valentine's Day for New Life.  That means New Life forward Drew Wynia's grandma has valentine's cookies for everybody.  That even includes innocent old me as there's a labeled plate of 3 cookies set aside with my name on them.  How sweet (and smart bribery).  Not good for the waistline with the sugary coating but they were well worth it.  Speaking of Wynia, Augsburg was in the building watching him tonight.

Game Time:
The size advantage for New Life was very evident from the get go.  Drew Wynia 3 interior hoops, a high low feed and New Life with a block that leads to a layup.  New Life jumps out to a 13-3 lead at the 12:30 mark.  The lead extends with Wynia scoring 2 hoops and adding an assist.  An extra pass finds Mark Rygh for 3 and the lead balloons to 28-12 inside the 4 minute mark.  St. Agnes getting some good looks but nothing going in.  Not to mention the difficulty of the small guards finishing against the big Eagles front line of Wynia and Zach Thor.   34-17 New Life at the half.

St. Agnes extends their man defense in the 2nd half.  It speeds New Life up which does cause some problems.  Makes you wonder if they should have gone to it earlier.  Despite that a bucket and offensive rebound for 2 free throws from Wynia keeps the lead at 21 with 8:28 left.  But that press does allow 1 push from the Aggies.  Marcus Johnson 2 buckets and Kentale Morris for 3 off a turnover plus a Tom Gutzmann steal for a layup.  The New Life lead is down to 52-40 inside of 6 minutes left.  But St. Agnes would get no closer.  New Life does a nice job of getting their bigs to the middle to break the pressure.  Soph Jacob Brezny for 3 to keep the lead at 13 with 4:02 left.  But St. Agnes is out of gas.  New Life breaks the pressure for layups and St. Agnes can't hit a shot.  Eagles score 12 of the last 14 points to win 71-48.

Post Game
For St. Agnes, Marcus Johnson with 10 of his 14 in the 2nd half.  Nobody else in double figures.  Soph Jacob Brezny with a pair of 3s and 8 points as the next top scorer.  The offense generated good looks but it was one of those nights.  The small lineup wasn't going to get much in the paint so with shot not falling, that's a long night waiting to happen.  The Aggies fall to 6-15 overall.  They are 0-7 in the Tri-Metro.  They stay non-conference with a section game at St. Paul Academy on Friday.  Then they'll finish up east division play with home games against Concordia and St. Anthony next week.

For New Life, the size played its part.  Drew Wynia with 16 of his 26 in the 1st half.  The other half of the twin towers, Zach Thor, adds 13 of his 17 in the 2nd half.  Their size affected the small St. Agnes guard in the paint all night.  Plenty of high low action that was difficult to deal with in the half court.  Mark Rygh adds 18 points.  The Eagles did get rattled by the St. Agnes scrambling 2nd half pressure.  Expect them to work on that to prepare for section play as they'll definitely have teams try to speed them up come playoff time.  New Life awaits their seed for the MCAA tournament next week.  They are now 14-6 overall and 7-3 in the MCAA.  That's likely good for a 5 way 2nd place tie.  They'll visit Minneapolis Edison on Thursday.

Targeting the big matchup

A busy Saturday in the metro.  Full slate of games at the Target Center with 5 varsity games.  Then one of the most anticipated games of the year with #1AAA De La Salle taking on #1AAAA Cretin-Derham. Let's get to it.

Game 1 (Target Center): Lester Prairie/Holy Trinty 62 PACT 48
T-Shirt guns and intro video included for this one.  Lester Prairie decides to go box and 1 all day on PACT's Cade Johnson.  Tyler Scheevel getting the main task of slowing him down.  Michael Ziermann distributing early then adding a couple hoops late.  Dylan Ruzicka adds a pair of late 3s.  Frosh Jordan Stone with a pair of late 3s to keep the PACT offense moving.  38-30 LP/HT at the half.

PACT finding the skip pass effective vs the box and 1.  Issac Erickson knocks down 3 early 3s, 2 of them via that skip pass.  That pulls PACT within 43-41 with 13 minutes left.  Johnson with a hoop and nice backcut for 2 throws to keep the Panthers within 4 with 9:13 left.  But PACT only scores 1 more field goal the rest of the way as the offense can't find its way.  Ziermann closes it out with 2 hoops and 2 free throws plus a nice assist for another layup.  Ziermann finishes with nice all-around line of 15 points 10 rebounds and 7 assists.  Parker Bayerl 14, Evan Lee with 13.  Cade Johnson with 17 points to lead PACT.  Isaac Erickson with 5 3s for all 15 of his points.

Game 3 (Target Center): Nova Classical Academy 72 ISM/ERA 57
We end the day where it began with the late night TCAC game. ISM coming in last in the top division.  Nova leading the 2nd division.  I pick the game up midway thru the 1st half and see Nova open up a 9 point lead just inside the 5 minute mark.  But Micah Hjelle hits a 3 to end a 10-0 ISM run and give ISM a 26-25 lead.  Nova 31-30 at the break.  Isaiah Bourdreax picks his game up in the 2nd half as Nova starts to pull away.  He scores a pair of hoops in a 14-5 spurt that allows the Knights to push the lead to double digits.  Zach Breen would try to keep ISM close with 10 in the 2nd half but the lead is too much.  Forward Noah Olson too much inside for Nova with 22 points.  Shae Nelson 19, Isaiah Boudreaux 13, Mathieu LaFrombois with 12.  Zach Breen 18 to lead ISM, Micah Hjelle 17.

Game 2: #1AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall 77 #1AAA De La Salle 66
Now to the big show.  A sell out at the large gym backs up the hype around the game.  Gabe Kalscheur does suit up and play coming off an ankle injury.  He has a big 1st half with 4 3s and 19 points.  He hit 2 3s to end the half to keep DLS within 43-31 at the break.  A 17-3 CDH run before that breaks open a 4 point game. Sy Chatman starts that with an offensive rebound for a 3 point play.  Jacob Prince 2 hoops and Chatman finishes the run by dunking off a turnover.

Jamison Battle with 2 early 3s and another Kalscheur bomb pulls DLS within 51-48 with over 13 minutes left.  The rest of the game has some chippy play with it in a bit of a surprise. But the story ultimately is CDH being too big, long and tough inside.  Every CDH bucket in the last 8+ minutes was at the rim.  Daniel Oturu and Sy Chatman dominate the glass and swat a boat load of shots.  Many of those blocks in highlight reel fashion.  Daniel Oturu 25 points, double digit boards and a fist full of blocks.  Sy Chatman with 17 points with his fair share of boards and blocks.  Ryan Larson outplays Tyrell Terry at the point guard spot.  Larson with 14, Terry with 8 before fouling out late.  Gabe Kalscheur with 19 of his 24 points in the 1st half.  Jamison Battle heated up in the 2nd half to finish with 19 points.  CDH played with fire having Chatman guard Kalscheur.  Chatman not used to having to guard a shooter and that movement.  That's what allowed Kalscheur to get loose as Chatman was often a step late.  I was surprised that Jacob Prince didn't see more time with that task.

A Saint, A Spring, A Louis, A Lake and 2 Parks

Its all about the letters SLP the last 2 nights.  1st a NW Suburban crossover game with Spring Lake Park hosting Elk River.  Then the other SLP is St. Louis Park as they host Chaska in a matchup of Metro West leaders.  Both teams coming off upset losses earlier in the week to make the Metro West race a total mess with 4 teams tied at 5-2 coming into Friday night play.  John Cena on the call Friday night to keep order in the big game.

Thursday: Spring Lake Park 53 Elk River 46
Scoring a real struggle in this one.  Elk River playing without forward Jack Burger.  Spring Lake Park playing without Walker Steward.  Spring Lake Park would have straight FGs be 3s to carry their offense.  They score 11 of the last 15 of the half to take a 30-23 halftime lead.  Elk River rallies with a 10-3 run to start the half and tie the game at 33 with 13 minutes left.  But the Elks go the next 4:40 without a FG and give up the next 9 points.  Panthers center Elijah Elkerton sitting part of this stretch with 4 fouls and Elk River would get the lead back down to 3 with just over 5 minutes left.  Elk River with chances down the stretch thanks to 3s from Brock Burdine and Dylan Fruth.  That cuts the lead to 2 with 1:27 left.  But Elk River won't score again.  Brock Burdine the only Elk River player in double figures with 15 points and 3 3s.  Sophomores Blake Remme and Gabe Myren with 14 and 11 points respectively.  But it was the 3 3s (all 1st half) and 11 points from senior Ben Whann that were a difference maker.

Friday: Chaska 92 St. Louis Park 68
These 2 teams plus Bloomington Jefferson and Robbinsdale Cooper all 5-2 with 5-3 Benilde-St. Margaret's 1 game behind them for the league lead.  The 1st half story was the outside shooting of Chaska.  They knock down 11 3s including 6 from junior Connor Krenos.  Cole Nicholson not only scoring but also being the hub of the offense finding those shooters.  But St. Louis Park had their offense working too.  Joey Whitlock making shots and the jet speed of Cire Mayfield always a factor.  He used that (how fitting) to score his 1000th career point during the 1st half.  2 of those Chaska 3s to end the 1st half and expand the lead to 50-37 at the break.

St. Louis Park clamps down on Krenos in the 2nd half.  But the inside play of Chaska is too much.  Parker Bjorklund 7 early points inside and it also draws Mayfield's 4th foul with 12:20 left and he has to miss a big chunk of time.  That stretches the margin to 23.  A minor St. Louis Park rally with Anthony Odens going inside for a 3 point play and 2 more free throws.  The margin is 16 after a Mayfield triple with 4:19 left.  The game is at 17 when St. Louis Park head coach Dave Breitenbucher gets a pair of technicals and gets tossed with 2:54 left.  Mayfield makes his 2 free throws but Krenos knocks down the 4 technicals.  That starts an 8-0 spurt and the rest is garbage time.  Connor Krenos with the 4 late FTs and a couple late hoops to end up with 31 points.  He had 6 of his 7 3s in the 1st half.  Parker Bjorklund's length a factor scoring 22 inside.  Cole Nicholson with 20 plus he added a bunch of assists (at least 6).  Cire Mayfield with 26 to lead St. Louis Park despite missing a bunch of time in each half with foul trouble.  Aiden Doherty with 15.  Joey Whitlock with 13 but all in the 1st half.

Living the TCAC Life

Its back to back nights in the TCAC this week.  In the words of Vince Lombardi, What The Hell Is Going On Around Here?!  Thank caucuses and a snowstorm forcing rescheduling for all of this.  Snickers on the menu at Prairie Seeds Academy, definitely satisfying.  Similar small gyms but you can't go wrong with those.

Tuesday: Learning for Leadership at Groves Academy
Who, what, where?  Learning for Leadership is in NE Minneapolis.  Groves Academy is in St. Louis Park right between Benilde-St. Margaret's and St. Louis Park high.  These are mid-level teams in the 2nd division of the TCAC.  But a pair of high scorers in Kafi Abdi and Malik Bodden going at it.  Groves looked to be in control of this one.  They scored the last 6 of the 1st half to take a 7 point play to the break.  But the 2nd half was the Kafi Abdi show for Learning for Leadership.  He scores 29 of his 31 points in the 2nd stanza.  That included 6 3s. But Groves still had an 11 point lead inside 4 minutes to play.  It wouldn't last.  Junior Abdirizak Ahmed brings the Mustangs back in the last 3:30.  He makes a floater, banks in a 3, makes 2 free throws and goes lefty to pull L4L within a point with 25 seconds left.  Groves totally falling apart a turnover, a technical and a bad mis.  Bill Cowher hands out the T after warning the players about complaining.  From that stand point I get it, but in a tight game on a dicey call with minimal words, its hard to swallow.  Groves would have the ball up 1 but miss with 15 seconds left to give Groves 1 last chance.  Its Kafi Abdi down the lane for the game winner with 2.2 left.  Learning for Leadership wins 69-68.  Kafi Abdi 31 points and 14 rebounds.  Abdirizak Ahmed adds 20 for the Mustangs.  Ahmed Nur with 13 before leaving due to injury.  Max Bilcik with 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Groves.  Malik Bodden with 21, Larry Mohamed with 14 for the Griffins.

Wednesday: Charter Stars at Prairie Seeds Academy
Any trip to Prairie Seeds always begs the obvious questions.  what is a Lycan anyway and is it prone to mange?  Charter Stars win the award for my worst prediction of the year.  I picked them last and here they are tied for 1st and in control of their own destiny in the top TCAC division.  Charter Stars with a ton of 1st half turnovers and Prairie Seeds would open up a 21 point halftime lead.  An 8 point game at the 8 minute mark blown open with 12 points from Peter Anderson.  Charter Stars closes it to 11.  But as we go under 10 minutes left, the Lycans score 6 in a row to kill the momentum.  71-54 Prairie Seeds in control or so I thought with 9:48 left.  I decide enough is enough and its a huge mistake.  Charter Stars center Taye Carter goes absolutely nuts the rest of the way and ends up with 40 points.  He had somewhere between 16 and 22 points when I leave.  Charter Stars come back with a huge rally and win 99-96.  Charter Stars have won 12 of 14 and are tied with Cristo Rey (Pumas have the head to head win) for the conference lead.  Prairie Seeds falls 1 game back and still have to visit the east side of St. Paul.

A tale of two halves in 1 city

Prologue
To St. Paul Johnson for a top city showdown with rival Central.  1st place in the conference on the line in this one.  And while it is a Monday night game (thank you caucuses), I was surprised at the sparse crowd.  Quality walking taco as always with 7-Up as the drink of choice.  Solid officiating crew on hand.

Game Time:
It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves.  It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity.  Central comes out and gets all up in Johnson and opens up a 20-5 lead at the 12:38 mark.  Johnson with 2 timeouts already burned trying to figure things out as Central is doing to them what they usually do to teams.  3 turnovers for hoops plus a strong start for Daveonte Davis of Central.  Not to mention a bunch of other Johnson turnovers early.

Johnson picks up their intensity and grinds their way back.  Shemar Tucker-Adams on a BLOB for a corner 3.  Jordan Mobley with 2 offensive boards to give him 2 free throws and a bucket.  The 13-2 Governors run pulls them back within 26-25 at the 6:46 mark.  Luke McElroy on the bench for Central with 3 fouls.  That brings in soph Caron Crowe off the bench.  He scores 9 points during the rest of the half.  Central opens the lead back up to double digits as they go on a 10-2 run in the last 1:35.  Crowe with a putback and 3 in that run.  49-37 Central leading at half.

After a Kyle Lee steal and hoop to start the 2nd half, Central scores the next 6.  PG Ronelle Porter knocking down an open 3 from Davis.  55-39 Minutemen back on a roll.  Then a Johnson turnover and Davis takes it all alone the other way and misses the dunk.  Rest of the game is all Johnson.  3 turnovers for 2 Tucker-Adams layups and 1 from Lee.  Tons of contact in this stretch of the game and nothing being called.  Feels like any whistle that is blown goes against Central.  Plus they're missing bunnies.   It doesn't get any better.

Mobley with 2 hoops.  Another turnover results in Lee grabbing a miss for 2 free throws.  Then he runs for a layup.  Then a steal and he'll let Tucker-Adams finish it.  Then a steal that he keeps for a 3 point play.  All of a sudden Johnson is up 62-59 with 12:11 left.  The smaller portion of the run is 11-0 in 1:10, typical Johnson fashion.  The bigger run is 23-4 in over 4 minutes.  Luke McElroy was sitting with a quick 4th and comes back in.  But he gets a cheapy and is gone with 10:06 left.

Then the Johnson layup line starts.  Mobley on a BLOB, Lamont White 2 hoops on dump offs, Sean Hubbard on a dump off.  Keylon Jackson takes a dish for a 3 point play.  He'll miss a layup on a dish, but promptly put back the miss.  Hubbard a 3 point play on you guessed it, a dump off.  Jackson another layup.  Then bonus material with White going to the reverse layup to finish off a turnover.  Mobley runs for a layup.  84-71 Johnson with 5:38 and its all Govs in the last 10 minutes.  Central goes 8 minutes without a field goal after the Porter 3 early in the half.  Then they just can't stop the guards of Johnson from penetrating.

Central with 1 last gasp as they score the next 8.  Porter attacking for 2 free throws and puts back a miss.  Then he gets a steal and finds Dion Ford for 2 free throws.  Ford adds a putback to cut the margin to 5 with 4:25 left.  But Central would get no closer.  Jackson 2 layups and Johnson makes 11 of 16 free throws the rest of the way.  Johnson wins 101-90 after being down 12 at half and 16 early in the 2nd half.  They score a crazy total of 64 points in the 2nd half.

Post Game
For Central, Daveonte Davis had a terrific 1st half with 20 of his 33 points.  But his 13 in the 2nd half was quiet as he had a late 3 and 3 FTs.  Dion Ford adds 19, Khai West 16.  Soph Caron Crowe with 9 of his 10 off the bench in the 1st half.  Central had been rolling along during the 2018 calendar year but this is the 2nd loss of that stretch to Johnson which has to sting.  Especially when they were just out toughed and outworked and didn't defend the ball.  Central falls to 11-8 overall and more importantly 5-2 in the St. Paul City.  Even a win most likely wouldn't have sent them to the Twin Cities Game but this loss almost certainly eliminates the Minutemen from the conference title discussion.  That's a disappointment for the preseason favorites.  They visit Highland Park on Thursday.

For Johnson, we've talked about their guard play in the past.  Tonight it was outstanding.  Kyle Lee with 24 points (14-15 FTs), Shemar Tucker-Adams 18, Jordan Mobley 17.  With all 3 getting it going, that's tough to defend.  Keylon Jackson was the main beneficiary with 24 points of his own.  Many of easy feeds from the guards.  Jackson gives Johnson an import physical dimension as their best rebounder and interior player.  Its a different feel when he's not on the floor.  Johnson takes total control of the conference race with the win.  They are now 6-0 in the league and 14-4 overall.  Those 4 losses all by single digits.  They should coast through their final 7 games into hosting the Twin Cities game vs Minneapolis North.  Up next is a trip to Como Park on Thursday and then Centennial comes to the east side on Saturday afternoon.

A Rebel Yell

Prologue
A Billy Idol reference just never gets old even if it is too obvious.  Its another trip to Park Center for a showdown between the 6th ranked Pirates and Champlin Park.  These teams come in on top of their respective divisions of the Northwest Suburban.  An unrecognized 3 man crew was an interesting choice for the game.  The Jet's Pizza appeals to me more and more each time I have it.  But the 500 ml bottle idea for Pepsi is not my cup of team.  The Pirate pep band was missing last week vs Osseo but they are in attendance tonight.  As is custom, we'll take today's tune from their set list.

Game Time:
The story of the night was Champlin Park's Josiah Strong.  He gets started early with a pair of hoops plus a pair of assists that put 6 points on the board.  Park Center their offense from Dain Dainja inside and Tommy Chatman outside.  Strong will add a couple other hoops in  there as well.  24-19 Champlin Park at the 8:17 mark as both teams scoring at a high rate.  Strong then with bonus freebies and a 3 around a Dainja hoop and the lead grows to 8  Bennett Otto converts a turnover and Strong adds another hoops for a 35-25 lead.  Park Center answers back with Jarius Cook to the rack for 2 and bonus free throws after a Khari Broadway 3.  Strong responds with a 3.  We go to half with Champlin Park leading 42-36.  Strong 18 and 3 assists for 8 more carrying the offense.

No Chatman to be found in the 2nd half as Emmanuel Tamba starts for him.  Dainja with a dunk and nice baseline spin for a jumper sandwiched around aStrong 3.  Otto for 3 and Strong another bucket to push the lead to 9 before a nice extra pass finds Broadway for 3.  Strong coast to coast with the lefty finish and Otto finds soph Jared Walter on the skip pass for 3 in transition.  56-45 Champlin Park leads with 14:01 left and Park Center needs a timeout.

Dainja then picks up his 4th foul with 11:43 left.  Strong immediately goes coast to coast again for a hoop and then a turnover for Park Center and Strong hits the transition 3.  68-52 with 11:05 left and Park Center takes another timeout to stop the hemorrhaging.  They'll take Tamba and have him faceguard Strong for the rest of the night.  That does an effective job of taking him out of the offense.

Meanwhile on offense Park Center gets it going.  The Warriors Cyclone set for a DJ Purnell hoop.  Levonte Parker flying around on the glass off the Park Center bench.  Plus Jarius Cook hocks down a couple of 3s to get the game back to single digits.  70-63 Champlin Park inside 8 to play.  Parker on the offensive glass for 2 free throws plus both ends of the bonus after Purnell puts back a miss.  That's a 15-2 Park Center run in 3 minutes.  72-69 Champlin Park with 6:24 left.  Strong finally back in the scoring column to stop the run.  Cook makes 2 free throws after Park Center rebounds their own missed free throw.  Then Purnell a putback and the foul for a chance to tie with 5:26 left.  But the free throw is no good.  Dainja returns just after that with his 4 fouls.

Juwan Grant off the Rebels bench for 3 of 4 free throws.  An offense rebound leads to a Tamba bucket.  Strong counters that but Cook buries a 3.  Champlin Park turns it over and Park Center has it.  Tamba makes 1 of 2 free throws and the 16 point lead is gone.  79 all with 2:41 to play.  Champlin Park misses and Park Center takes timeout for another shot at the lead.  They come out incredibly passive against the Rebels 2-3 zone and eventually turn it over with 1:31 left.  Strong then penetrates and kicks out to Otto for a go ahead 3 with just under a minute left.  After a Park Center free throw to cut the lead to 2, they will play for a trap before fouling.  Champlin Park moves the ball despite some possible hacks that weren't called.  It ends up in Strong's hands with 30 seconds left and he'll shoot an ill-advised wide open 3.  That's no good and Park Center rushes the ball back down the floor.  But its Otto with a great strip on defense to get it back.  He makes 4-4 free throws the rest of the way and that's your ball game.  Champlin Park pulls the upset 86-81.

Post Game
For Park Center, Jarius Cook with 18 of his 25 in the 2nd half.  He had 4 3s on the night.  DJ Purnell with a nice outing of 16 points working inside.  Dain Dainja 13 despite some foul trouble.  Despite the huge numbers from Strong, I liked what Emmanuel Tamba did defensively to take him away in the last quarter of the game.  Levonte Parker's energy off the bench was a big factor as well.  Dainja I thought was under utilized as there wasn't much resistance to getting him post touches.  The Pirates fall to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the NW Suburban.  That drops them a game behind Osseo in the West division.  Plus Osseo already beat Champlin Park on the road.  Park Center hosts Coon Rapids on Monday and then visits Maple Grove on Thursday.

Josiah Strong was outstanding for Champlin Park with 36 points, 18 in each half.  But the guy who saved the bacon was Bennett Otto.  He handled the ball a lot down the stretch with Strong being denied.  Not to mention he scored the last 7 of the game and had the big defensive play in the last 30 seconds.  He was also outstanding with 27 points and 3 3s and 12-14 FTs.  22-27 from the charity stripe plus 4 late FT misses for Park Center were critical.  The Rebels improve to 11-5 overall.  They stay 1 game ahead of Blaine in the North division at 9-2.  They visit Elk River on Monday and host Coon Rapids on Thursday.  Then the big rematch at Blaine in 10 days.  Blaine won the 1st meeting by a point.

No Storm Surge

Prologue
After a surprise night off and problems with the Czar's technology, we're back.  Tuesday's TCAC showdown was entertaining but 3 technicals cost PSA 5 points and they lose by 6.  Charter Stars will also have a say with 2 vs Prairie Seeds and a rematch with Cristo Rey.  As to tonight, its a usual cold trip to the Haben Center to see Chanhassen take on the host Benilde-St. Margaret's.  Small but quality hot dog with the delicacy known as A&W for the beverage.  The Old Spice Guy, The Commish and a D1 college lady official working the game in front of a small crowd.

Game Time:
This was tight the entire way.  Soph Luke Gitzen off the Chanhassen bench with a reverse layup and a transition 3.  Soph Walker Johnson counters with his 2nd 3 and we're tied at 12 and over 7 minutes in.  Patient offense from both sides with Benilde using the Swing and Chanhassen with their 5 out continuity. Dylan Drees with a transition 3 and the Benilde-St. Margaret's takes a 18-13 lead at the 8:50 mark.  Ryder Hutton with a layup and 3 to bring Chanhassen back to even at 20 just 2 minutes later.  Johnson with his 3rd right wing triple of the night and he'll hit his 4th 3s of the half.  That counters Austin Carter's stepback jumper and triple.  27-26 BSM inside 4 minutes.  Gitzen then with a block on 1 end that leads to him hitting a 3 on the other end.  Chris Wandling adds the final bucket of the half.  That sends Chanhassen to the locker room with a 31-27 lead.

Johnson and Riley Miller with 3s to counter Carter scoring a hoop and adding another backdoor bucket.  39 all 2 minutes in.  Miller hits 2 technical free throws countered by a Chanhassen bucket.  43-41 Chan at 13:45.  Then Benilde has a spark.  Chanhassen gets nothing out of THE WORLD'S WORST OFFENSE and Johnson scores a 3 point play on the other end.  Then Johnson with 2 steals and he'll convert the 2nd one.  Quick timeout by Chanhassen as the 7-0 Red Knights run puts Benilde-St. Margaret's up 48-43 with 11:17 left.

Drees with 2 critical threes but the lead will only stay at 6.  Carson Hollowaty with bonus free throws and Charlie Ash off the bench with the surprise bomb.  That means the Storm cut the lead to 56-55 with 6:39 left and now BSM needs a timeout.  Hollowaty with a great find of Regan Tollefson for a 3 point play but Joe Dunn answers right back with a 3 point play of his own.  Hollowaty again and a Dunn free throw.  62 all with 4:19 left.

Then a great possession by Benilde.  The ball moves inside and out and it finds Drees for 3 with 3:23 left.  Great patience and moving the ball against the help in the post.  BSM will miss 2 FTs with 2:01 left but Tollefson has a 3 go in and out with 1:40 left.  It ends up with Carter and that's good for 3.  We're tied at 67 with 1:20 to play.

Riley Miller makes 2 free throws with 1:08 left to put BSM back on top.  Then the Red Knights go 2-3 zone and Chanhassen turns it over on back to back possessions.  BSM makes 3 of the 4 free throws to go up 5.  But Holloway and Wandling make triples around 2 Dunn free throws to cut the lead to 1 with 4.3 left.  Miller makes 2 more freebies with 2.6 left.  Chanhassen out of time outs.  Wandling's heave from half court is just off.  Benilde-St. Margaret's hangs on 76-73.

Post Game
For Chanhassen, Austin Carter leads the way with 18 points.  Chris Wandling with 11, Ryder Hutton and Luke Gitzen each with 10.  Quiet nights for Carson Hollowaty and Regan Tollefson.  I like the 5 out motion stuff the Storm ran.  Thought it was effective enough to run more of it.  Also like the stuff they did out of high post flashes and cutting off of that.  Plus they threw in some 1-4 high stuff.  Chanhassen loses their 3rd game in a row.  The Storm fall to 7-9 overall, 2-3 in the Metro West.  They play at St. Michael-Albertville in the Community Clash on Saturday.  Then Monday, Wednesday, Friday games in league play next week.  That includes a visit from current league leader St. Louis Park on Monday.

Soph Walker Johnson leads Benilde-St. Margaret's with 20 points.  He had 5 3s, 4 of them in the 1st half to carry the offense early.  Riley Miller with all 14 of his points in the 2nd half.  Dylan Drees with 14 points, 3 big 3s in the 2nd half.  Joe Dunn 1 field goal but 10-13 FTs for 12 points.  The Red Knights shot 24-31 from the line.  That was compared to 10-12 for Chanhassen.  Dunn and Miller with 19 of their 26 points at the charity stripe.  The Red Knights continue to run the Swing.  Plus they'll add some 2-3 high with the post screening motion.  But no real use of the 1-3-1 which coach Moore has liked in the past.  Carter Uphus wearing the face mask tonight and coming off the bench.  Don't sleep on Benilde come section time.  They have shooters and size and have played top teams tough including a 23 point blowout of Wayzata.  The Red Knights improve to 9-8 overall, 3-2 in the Metro West.  That keeps them 1 game out of 1st.  They too have 3 league games next week.  They get league winless Richfield and Kennedy with a trip to 1 league loss Chaska in the middle on Wednesday.

Royals Rule a Return Game

Prologue
A quiet night on the local schedule takes me to #10AA Annandale at #2AAAA Hopkins.  This is a return game from last year.  An emotional night allowed Annandale to be in the game right until the final buzzer last year.  But a very different Annandale team.  Its the usual whole wheat bun for the hot dog.  Not up to the usual standards tonight.  Sprite is the beverage.

Number of Teams I've Seen: 124 (107 games, 61 days, 39 buildings, 20 online)

Game Time:
Annandale not intimidated early as they jump out to a 8-0 lead less than 2 minutes in.  That's thanks to a pair of smooth bombs from Nick Bieniek.  Hopkins quickly replies with the next 8 via 3s from Zeke Nnaji and Blaise Beauchamp.  Bieniek with 2 more makes from the deep beyond and Annandale regains the lead 18-13.  Hopkins counters with a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the night.  Dane Zimmer and Joe Hedstrom each with a pair of inside hoops during that run.  Hopkins threatens to pull away late in the half but Bieniek throws in a prayer at the halftime buzzer.  Its his 5th and final 3 of the night.  Hopkins 30-28 at the break.

All Hopkins in the 2nd half.  They start with a 10-1 run with 3 inside hoops and a Beauchamp triple.  AJ Hinz for 3 at the 12:50 mark and that keeps Annandale within 44-35.  Hopkins puts the game away with a 14-0 run.  Akeen Woods and Beauchamp start it with 3s.  Kerwin Walton finishes it with a 3. That run takes just under 4 minutes.  Only 2 field goals for Annandale in the first 10+ minutes of the half as the lead goes from 2 to 23.  Walton and Woods each add another triple to get the margin to 25 with just under 3 minutes left.  The rest is basically garbage time.  Hopkins wins 66-47.

Post Game
Nick Bieniek had the stroke working in the 1st half with 5 bombs.  He finishes with 23 points, 17 of those in the 1st half.  AJ Hinz has 8 of his 12 in the 2nd half.  Hopkins stepped up a level late in the 1st half and especially in the 2nd half and there's no answer for that.  Annandale falls to 12-3 with the loss.  It breaks a 7 game winning streak.  They still have 2 Wright County West home games this week and then a huge 6AA showdown with #4AA St. Cloud Cathedral in the Community Clash in St. Michael on Saturday.

Very good balance for Hopkins.  Zeke Nnaji leads with 14 points.  Blaise Beauchamp adds 11.  Anthony Davis with 9 and 3 others with 8.  Hopkins with 6 3s in the 2nd half after only a couple in the 1st half.  Add that in with much better intensity and that made the game get out of hand quickly.  Hopkins has now won 19 in a row after the disaster that was the opening night loss to Cretin-Derham Hall.  They host rival Minnetonka on Friday.  Then a week off to prepare for a trip to Edina.  That begins a stretch of 4 out of 5 on the road to end the season.
