I saw Hope Academy and Hudson earlier in the week. Then there's tonight's holiday makeup date between Hill-Murray and Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity. That got my mind rolling (scary). We often see preview articles that include 1 thing from each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. With that and my youth recalling Sesame Street in mind ... This Post Is Brought To You By The Letter H.
Prologue
H is for hypothermia. Coldest night of the year for the long trek. All the cold weather gear in use. BRRR!
H is for hardwood. In this case that means hardwood bleachers. Very rare these days to see old wooden bleachers with gaps where things can fall thru. Had 1 fan's phone go thru but it survived.
H is for hog dog. Well of course, what else would be on my concessions menu. I do a rare mid-week Pepsi as well.
H is for honor. Lester Prairie's Evan Lee was honored this week at a school ceremony for his acceptance into West Point.
H is for Hail The Pioneers. That's the Hill-Murray school song posted on the wall.
Game Time
H is for Hiccups. LP/HT turning it over early on leading to Pioneers points. 12-6 Hill-Murray outside of the 11 minute mark of the 1st half.
H is for High/Low. LP/HT not making anything from the outside in the 1st half. But they were able to effective get high low action against the Hill-Murray 2-3 all night. Alex Heimerl with a 2nd bucket as he scores diving to the rim and getting the feed from the short corner. Classic zone offense theory shown there.
H is for Harrison. That's forward Dexter Harrison. He scores 3 bunnies late to keep Lester Prairie close.
H is for Halftime. 29-23 Hill-Murray at the break. Kenny Larmie 2 free throws and a late bucket to keep the margin for Hill-Murray. No shots falling for Lester Prairie.
H is for Heating Up. Lester Prairie opens the 2nd half on an 11-4 run. Heimerl off more high low action, Zach Jackson with 5 points and a Harrison putback in that run. 1st LP/HT lead of the night is 34-33 as we approach 13 minutes left.
H is for Halt that momentum. Junior Max Yanz and Soph Sam Yanz both Hill-Murray starters. Max with a bucket to break the LP/HT run, then Sam with 3 straight Hill-Murray hoops. Nice variety with a putback, a short floater in the lane and then a nice cut vs a LP/HT zone. Hill-Murray reclaims the lead by 6, 43-37 with 8 minutes left.
H is for Heavy Hitter. That's LP/HT leading scorer Evan Lee. He finds Heimerl for a layup on a nice dump down penetrating the zone. Lee then adds 2 free throws to tie the game at 43 with 4:51 left. Then the teams trade triples before Hill-Murray bonus free throws with 2:18 left. Those will be the last Hill-Murray points. Lee to Heimerl for the go ahead 3 from the left corner with 2 minutes left. Hill-Murray turnover and Lee finds Jackson for a dagger 3 with under 1:45 left. That puts the Bulldogs up 6. Hill-Murray squanders a missed front end and a couple of LP/HT turnovers. Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity wins 55-48. The Bulldogs outscore Hill-Murray 18-5 over the last 8 minutes.
Post Game
H is for Hill-Murray. The Pioneers fall to 4-16 overall. They've now lost 13 of their last 14. 3 of the last 5 losses have been by7 points or less. That's progress at least. The Pioneers are off until at trip to Hastings next Tuesday. Such a marvelous coincidence that it too has the letter H.. Max Yanz leads Hill-Murray with 13 points. Joe Schoenecker adds 9, Kenny Larmie 8. I found it interesting that out of their 2-3 high Humpty Dumpty look (that's the Johnny Orr, Dana Altman, Brad Underwood 2-3 high stuff, Al McGuire called it Humpty Dumpty), they got the 2nd cutter curling to the rim for many good looks.
H is for Holy Trinity/Lester Prairie. The Bulldogs improve to 14-9 overall. They host a big MCAA showdown with Spectrum tomorrow. Its the final conference game for both. Spectrum has run the table so far at 13-0 and clinched the league title. LP/HT is currently tied for 2nd with Legacy and would assure at least a tie for that 2nd spot with a win. Alex Heimerl leads the Bulldogs with 14 points. That included the late go ahead triple. Forward Dexter Harrison very productive off the bench with 9 of his 11 points in the 1st half. 3 others with 9 points for Lester Prairie.

Prologue
A fun week so far as we wind down the season. Monday took me to Hope Academy where the originally intended home opener at Hope's new gym took place vs South. As to the game, South jumped out to a 32 point lead in the 1st half and then pumped the brakes hard. Easy 96-75 win for the Tigers over a depleted Hope squad. Caleb Hoilien with 37 points and 9 boards on my sheet but not much help. Anthony Martin with 6 triples and 31 points to lead South. He looks primed for a monster year next year for the Tigers.
Tuesday I had the chance to take La Crosse Central at Hudson. La Crosse Central with twins Johnny and Jordan Davis who are committed to Wisconsin. Luke Healy of Hudson averages 20 a night and will be playing locally with Fury this spring. Central roles to an easy 73-46 win. Johnny Davis with 32 points and 8 boards on my sheet. He passed the 2000 career points mark. Jordan Davis 15 points and 12 boards by my count. He passed 1000 career points. Love the new gym at Hudson. With 5 of the top 6 returning and a nice Chin Offense, plenty to see there.
Now to tonight. I wanted to cross 2 independents off my list with LILA at Prairie Seeds but that was called off. So that means I get to fall back to a good one in the NW Suburban with north division leader Maple Grove visiting #6AAAA Spring Lake Park. Back to regular concessions after a could day. We get OT in the JV game but that was just the start of the fun.
Season Ticker:
Spring Lake Park with 2 early timeouts and then a 3rd on a loose ball. Maple Grove jumping out to 18-8 lead to force that. Spring Lake Park rallies with Kaleb Skelly scoring 6 in a 13-1 run. Blake Remme drains a 3 to end the run and give SLP their 1st lead, 21-19 at 8:30. Lovell Williams scores 13 of the last 22 of the half for Maple Grove. 5 attacking hoops and a triple for those. 41-36 Maple Grove at the break. Crimson with 3 in double figures (Williams, Haakenson, Boettcher). Gabe Myren with 10 for Spring Lake Park at the half.
Daydor Phillips bookends a 6-0 run to give the Panthers the lead again. Williams breaks that with a 3 and we go to a Crimson MoKiller timeout at the 13:17 mark. Spring Lake Park makes a run from there. Maple Grove with nothing on a long possession and it turns into a turnover for a Remme 3 point play. Jacob Say 2 drives for hoops. Remme for 3 in transition and Phillips scores to end the 15-5 Panthers run. 61-53 SLP as we approach 8:30 to play in regulation.
Caden Boettcher with a free throw and 2 buckets to cut the margin to 3. Myren drifts to the corner for 3 and converts a turnover to keep the lead at 8 with just over 6 minutes left. Jon Haakenson with bonus free throws followed by a Sean O'Dwyer putback for a 3 point paly. MG back within 3. Williams 2 free throws, Remme a drive to his left and lefty finish to counter it. Williams and O'Dwyer for 3. Maple Grove back up 71-70 with 4 minutes left. Crimson go 2-3 high out of a timeout after they get it back. It ends up with a turnover and a scramble on the Spring Lake Park end before Remme cleans up the mess with a 3 point play. 73-71 SLP with 2:30 left in regulation.
Haakenson scores and Williams puts back his own miss with 1:45 left. MG back on top and they'll get it back up 1 after 1-2 Myren FTs with 1:38 left. They add 2 free throws and Haakenson with a layup after a SLP miss. 79-74 MG with 50 seconds left. Myren puts back a miss and gets fouled with 40.1 left. That cuts the margin to 2. Williams with 4 free throws around Myren 1-2 FTs. Myren for 3 with 7.1 left. Last Spring Lake Park timeout down by 2. Myren fouls out on the inbound with 5.5 left. Maple Grove makes the 2nd of 2 free throws. One last chance for the Panthers. Remme will push it and his pull up from the right side of the top of the key is good at the buzzer! 84 all and we'll play overtime. FREE BASKETBALL!
Kaleb Skelly with a free throw. He adds a a putback for a 3 point play after a Remme blocks a shot on the other end. Skelly wipes away a Maple Grove shot which leads to a Say free throw. SLP by 5 with 1:20 left in the 1st OT. O'Dwyer with a 3 point play and Williams converts a turnover to tie it. Say counters with a triple with 40 seconds left but RaShaun Parker answers with a 3 of his own. Remme's final attempt is no good. Maple Grove heave is no good. 92 all and we'll play a 2nd overtime. MORE FREE BASKETBALL!!
Williams opens the 2nd overtime scoring with a floater. Skelly responds with 2 free throws. Maple Grove holding with a 2 point lead under 90 seconds left. Say with pure robbery and he gets a clean strip and steal to tie it with 1:17 left. Remme with another block with 40 seconds left. Spring Lake Park will play for 1. Remme gets it and he'll drive and score the tough bucket with 4.2 seconds left to win it. Last chance for Maple Grove is no good. What a ball game, #6AAAA Spring Lake Park wins 98-96 in double overtime. All 15 players who played scored.
Post Game:
Maple Grove falls to 12-2 in the NW Suburban north division and 17-4 overall. Guard Lovell Williams was fantastic as he topped all scorers with 35 points. He hit 3 triples and 6 free throws along with 7 regular buckets. His quickness was too much to deal with all night off the bounce. Jon Haakenson with 19 points before fouling out in regulation. Caden Boettcher adds 16. The Crimson still have 3 tough road games left at Park Center, at Champlin Park and at Armstrong. Champlin Park only 2 games back and the other tough game they have is at home vs Spring Lake Park. So don't count the Rebels out of the division race just yet. Despite all of those tough games, hard to see Maple Grove falling out of the 1 seed in 8AAAA.
Spring Lake Park has their stars shine. Gabe Myren with 27 all in regulation before fouling out. Blake Remme with 25 points including the game winner. Plus a couple of important blocks in overtime. Kaleb Skelly with 14 points, 6 of those in the overtimes. Jacob Say with 6 of his 17 in the overtime. His 2 OT buckets were super clutch. The 2nd half defense tightened up a little but in the 1st half, especially early, Maple Grove made it look like a layup drill. The win improves Spring Lake Park to 18-3 overall, 12-2 in the NW Suburban west division. They remain 1 game behind Park Center for the division crown. The finish is tough with a trip to Armstrong, home games vs Osseo and Park Center and the finale at Champlin Park. But they control their own destiny which is all you can ask. Park Center, Champlin Park and the Panthers all also battling for seeding in section 5AAAA as well. Win out and Spring Lake Park could make a case for the 1 seed. Lose those 2 tough road games and to Park Center and they may end up down in the 4 spot.

Taming Cats
Now that we're starting to wind down the regular season in February, that means no local all day events on the schedule. So to get in a pair of games and cross another local team off my to do list, its a doubleheader on the east side of St. Paul. First its a trip to the always outstanding Lansing Center at Mounds Park Academy. They get in a boys/girls doubleheader against Eveleth-Gilbert. Then its a short hop to Johnson to see Chisago Lakes make the trip south.
Game 1: Eveleth-Gilbert 74 Mounds Park Academy 49
Outside winning their own holiday tourney, its been a really long year for Mounds Park. The Panthers get a bunch of good looks early but can't get them to go. Frosh Carter Mavec with a couple of 3s. Soph Will Bittman with a putback and the foul to push the lead to 16 for Eveleth-Gilbert. Shane Fruchterman with a pair of 3s and he ends the half with a steal for 2. That keeps Mounds Park within 18 at the half. Just not enough firepower for Mounds Park Academy. This was their closest loss of the season as they fall to 3-14. Eveleth-Gilbert improves to 8-12 and they only use 1 senior. 5 of the 1st 8 in the rotation are underclassmen. Mounds Park JV very young as its mostly freshmen.
Game 2: St. Paul Johnson 82 Chisago Lakes 61
Too much chaos from Johnson in the halfcourt. Too much quickness too. Julian Hodges 21 points. Jesse Foster productive inside as well with 20 points. The bench chips in with 25 points and 4 triples. Chisago Lakes not able to get much going in the halfcourt thanks to the Johnson defense. Johnson remains hot as they've won 11 out of 12 in the new year. That was after losing 6 of their first 7. Next up is a big conference showdown at Highland Park on Thursday night. Highland Park with a sweep of their remaining schedule could force a 3 way tie on top of the league. Most conference tie scenarios would send the Scots to the Twin Cities game if it gets to that point.

Filling in the Gaps
The last couple of nights have been dedicated to seeing a couple of local teams in person that I had only caught online up to this point. Its a couple of compelling games as well. First a NW Suburban grudge match from January. Then a Tri-Metro rematch that was a 5 point game in the 1st meeting.
Thursday: #7AAAA Park Center 65 #8AAAA Robbinsdale Armstrong 49
A big time defensive effort from Park Center in the 1st half of this one. They hold the Falcons to just 15 points in the half. With Josh Lewis and Detavious Frierson flying around and Dain Dainja blocking shots inside, Armstrong got nothing going. Add in a pair of 3s from Josh Brown and John Grigsby to provide a perimeter punch. Adam Biewen got going early in the 2nd half to keep Armstrong within striking distance. Park Center would try to blow it open with a run started by a big Dainja dunk, 2 Brown triples and a Dainja post up to end it. All Pirates as they lead 54-30 with 7:30 left. Sloppy stretch from the Pirates leads to an 14-3 Falcons run. Lead down to 13 with 2:27 left but Armstrong gets no closer. Dain Dainja 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks on my sheet. Josh Brown adds 15 points with 4 3s. John Grigsby 3 bombs off the bench for 9 along with 9 from David Ijadimbola and Josh Lewis. Jake Breitbach with 15 to lead Armstrong. Adam Biewen 10 of his 12 early in the 2nd half. Armstrong back to back losses vs 2 of the other top teams in the NW Suburban west division. They fall 2 games behind division leader 12-1 Park Center. The Pirates face the other 3 top teams in the league all in a row starting next Friday and its in a 1 week stretch. Totino-Grace with a game left at Park Center but the rest is a bunch of winnable games against the weak north division. So the Eagles look to have the easiest road to the division crown.
Friday: #10AAA Richfield 89 Fridley 82
I liked Richfield's young talent last year. But in my season predictions, let's just say I totally botched that one. I didn't expect the development to happen this quickly. Their only loss in the last month is at De La Salle. Richfield totally dominates the paint in the 1st half. Isaiah Casey Hammond with 19 points. Big forward Jaden Wollmuth adds 7 points. Every made FG for Richfield is in the paint. They get a friendly advantage in the foul count too which leads to a 16-2 edge in free throws attempted. 45-31 Richfield at the break.
The second half is a totally different game. Isaac Burns and Christian Crockett get hot for Fridley. Richfield doesn't pound the ball inside. Fridley is able to generate some turnovers. They cut an 18 point margin all the way down to 4 with 8:43 left. Casey Hammond gets fouls 4 and 5 in that sequence leaving a big hole inside. Lamar Grayson has been great all year for the Spartans. He then scores 8 straight to stop the bleeding. Wollmuth on the block finds Grayson on the weakside for 2 late layups late to keep the game out of reach. Lamar Grayson leads all scorers with 29 points. He scored 21 of those in the 2nd half. Isaiah Casey Hammond adds 19 of his 22 in the 1st half. Christian Crockett scores 16 of his 21 in the 2nd half to lead Fridley. Yoal Ruei with 4 3s and 20 points. Isaac Burns with 13 of his 17 in the 2nd half for Fridley as well.
Richfield is now 6-1 in the Tri-Metro and they just started a stretch of 6 of the final 8 at home. 1 of the road games is another Battle of the Tracks at Holy Angels. That game will have big section seeding impacts at the top of section 3AAA. The final game of the year is at home against De La Salle which could be for the league title. Fridley is in a fight with Rocori and Monticello for a possible 2 seed in section 5AAA. But the schedule is really tough right now. They've lost 2 in a row on the road to both Richfield schools. Columbia Heights, at De La Salle and at St. Croix Lutheran are the next 3 games.

Flying over Section 6AAA
Its February and that means its time to start thinking about section play. This week opens for me with a trio of teams from the section. They're all in different leagues so that always makes seeding a challenge. Hence the eye test. We open Monday at Henry with the Patriots taking on Mound-Westonka. Then Tuesday its off to Benilde-St. Margaret's for Metro West game with one of the league leaders Chaska.
Monday: Mound-Westonka 61 Minneapolis Henry 54
The extra large all beef hot dog is a nice treat. Big implications here for Mound-Westonka. With their AA conference schedule, games like this almost must win events for them to get any traction come seeding time. Henry would open up a 12-7 lead, see that flip back to Mound and then retake the lead 18-15 at the 6 minute mark. The White Hawks counter with a 13-4 run to end the half. Soph guard Jason Spaeth off the bench with 6 points in that run. Mound-Westonka goes to the half up 28-22.
Henry with a quickness edge off the dribble and they tried to put it to use in the 2nd half. Quamar Gresham 1 bucket and then a 3 point play off the pick and roll. Spaeth counters that with a free throw and a triple. Jamal Gardner off the bounce to cut it to 3 before Spaeth goes for 2 more hoops around 2 Gresham free throws. PG Santi Phommahaxay with bonus free throws and a drive for 2 more. 7-0 Mound-Westonka run and the lead is 56-45 with just under 3 minutes left.
Henry tries to rally. A missed front end and 2 turnovers by the White Hawks trigger a 9-1 run. Jamar Gardner with 2 free throws and a bucket in that run. That cuts the lead to 3 with 59.7 seconds left. But Henry doesn't score the rest of the way and 4 free throws close the door. Soph guard Jason Spaeth with 18 points off the bench to lead Mound-Westonka. Logan Leonard adds 3 triples and 15 points. Mark Campbell with 13 points to lead Henry. Quamar Gresham 11 and Jamar Gardner adds 10. The win puts Mound-Westonka within the tiebreaker margin of Henry in the section standings for the 3rd seed. Henry still has a section game with current 2 seed Waconia which could muddy the waters too. Object is to stay out of the 4 seed so that you don't see De La Salle until the section final.
Tuesday: Chaska 65 Benilde-St. Margaret's 57
A small hot dog leaves room for a surprising dessert. The Chaska camera crew ended up sitting right next to me and had a tupperware full of chocolate chip cookies. These were for the players but there was a spare one for me. OUTSTANDING! Well done ladies. That was only after some help from friends in online places. With my waistline (and the Czar's infinite wealth from the peasants), there's no way I can reasonably beg for food. The players were already eating them before they got to the locker room.
As to the game, throw the records out. Nick Peterson with 3 triples and 11 of the 1st 15 BSM points. 15 all as we go under the mid point of the 1st half. Sophs Derric Standifer and Dan Ijadimbola add 8 points after that for a 23-19 BSM lead. Chaska scores the last 8 of the half with Luke Strazzanti scoring 4 of those at the charity stripe. 29-25 Hawks retake the lead at the break.
Strazzanti adds another bucket as the run ends at 10-0. BSM going 8:15 across halftime with just 1 field goal. Charlie Hanson for 3 on the extra pass and BSM still within 38-33 with 11:08 left. Not really a MoKiller timeout but Chaska goes on a 13-3 run from there. Ben Kallman, Zack Lea and Strazzanti all with triples in the run. 51-36 Chaska with 8:05 left and the double figure win that the records predicted appears to be back on track.
Standifer with 2 bombs around a Peterson fade away inside. Ijadimbola for 3. Standifer takes a turnover for 2 and Peterson adds a free throw. That cuts the Chaska lead to 56-52 with 2:55 and BSM has the ball. Game on. Chaska misses 2 front ends but BSM can't convert. After a questionable out of bounds call went Benilde's way, a questionable timeout call goes Chaska's way with 1:23 left and allows the Hawks to push the lead to 58-52. BSM misses on the other end and the rest is free throws to seal the win. Luke Strazzanti with 24 points for Chaska to lead all scorers. Zach Lea chips in with 10. Nick Peterson leads BSM with 20 points. Charlie Hanson with 11, Derric Standifer with 12. All 3 players with 3 triples each.
Benilde-St. Margaret's looks locked into the 7 seed in 6AAA. Chaska stays in a 3 way tie for the Metro West lead with Cooper and St. Louis Park. They host Cooper who beat them in the 1st meeting and go to St. Louis Park who they beat previously. Chaska with the head to head win over Shakopee and a 6-1 section record (win over Prior Lake and loss to Eden Prairie) would reasonably give them the 2 seed. But they are currently 3rd in the QRF and outside the tiebreaker margin to Shakopee. Both teams with losses at Eastview and Eden Prairie by almost the exact same margins. For the semis it doesn't matter if you're 2 or 3 but in the meat grinder that is section 2AAAA, it means playing Edina or Minnetonka in round 1 instead of Jefferson or Chanhassen.

A Weekend of Red
No we're not talking about the big Wisconsin win over Michigan State in hoops. Its a fun set of 3 games in 24 hours as the month of February is upon us. I start with the 2nd round of Metro East play and a fun directional St. Paul matchup as North St. Paul visits South St. Paul. Then closing out my AAAA list seeing the red of Rochester John Marshall at Osseo in a Saturday matinee. It ends with a big clash on the island with #1AAAA Eden Prairie coming into #3AAA De La Salle. Here are the sights and sounds.
Friday: North St. Paul 72 South St. Paul 59
Real sugar Pepsi to go with my meal deal. If South St. Paul can duplicate their 5-3 1st rotation thru the metro east schedule, they'll give the program its most wins in a season since the 1970 state runner up team. The last winning season for the program was 1999. North St. Paul won the 1st meeting by 14. South St. Paul would open up a 28-17 1st half lead. Good all around play from frosh Max Wilson during that stretch. North St. Paul's offense would finally kick in with a 14-3 run finished by 2 Shaheed Muhammad buckets. Soph Kenny Daily with a nice lefty finish and a 3 point play in the run as well. Wilson adds the final 2 FTs of the half. 33-31 South St. Paul at the break.
Muhammad very quiet in the 1st half until the end keeps it going with a 3 point play, a FT and a triple in the 1st 5 minutes. 44-40 NSP takes the lead. Its a 2 point game when SSP star PG Alonzo Dodd sits with his 4th foul at the 11:07 mark. Muhammad 2 FTs for a 51-49 NSP lead and Dodd is back in with 8:22 left. Roll those dice coach McCollister. Soph PF Anthony Faulk with a second BLOB bucket as SSP is within 55-53 with 6:11 left. But NSP slams the door with a 13-1 run over the next 3:40. Daily with a 3 point play, 4 NSP FTs and 2 driving buckets to end the run. Shaheed Muhammad with 11 of his 16 in the 2nd half. Kenny Daily also with 16 for NSP. Soph PG Alonzo Dodd leads SSP with 10 of his 16 in the 1st half. He shot 9-16 at the charity stripe. Frosh Max Wilson adds 14 points for the Packers.
Saturday matinee: Osseo 60 Rochester John Marshall 45
Both lineups with major holes in them. JM Center Lincoln Meister just committed to UMD. He's out with meniscus surgery last week. Osseo with 4 members of their star studded sophomore class out of the lineup. They've had a different lineup every night it seems so the revolving door continues. The Osseo D sets the tone right away as they hold JM without a FG for the 1st 7:35 of the game. But Osseo wasn't an offensive juggernaut to begin with and they didn't blow the game open. Its a 6 point game before JM goes on an 11-0 run starting at the 8 minute mark and going for just 1:40. 3 players with 3s in that run. 17-12 JM at 6:20. Osseo comes back with a 9-0 run starting with the 2nd 3 from Hassan Kamara. That helps Osseo to a 25-22 halftime lead.
Jacob Daing with a quick 3rd foul for JM and he sits. He comes back after a 9-1 Osseo run and picks up a charge for his 4th with 12:56 left. Osseo missing a bunch of FTs early in the half otherwise the run would have been more. Ty Tuckner working inside for JM. His 3 point play with 11:20 left keeps the Osseo lead at just 6. JV wing Aballa Bagutti off the bench for JM and hits a 3 and the lead is down to 5. Osseo misses 2 more freebies but Daing commits his 5th on 2nd miss with 9:32 left. Osseo then hits 4 free throws as they stretch the lead to 11. PG Benard Omooria leads Osseo down the stretch. He hits an open 3, a free throw and a layup as Osseo puts the game out of reach. Benard Omooria leads Osseo with 13 points. Fellow sophs Tyriece Waits and Hassan Kamara each add 12 points for the Orioles. Will Woodford leads the Rockets with 16 points. Ty Tuckner adds 11 for JM.
Saturday Night: #1AAAA Eden Prairie 61 #3AAA De La Salle 42
Excellent walking taco on the menu. Long time no have, YUM! This was really fun to watch for the discipline showed on both ends by both teams. Plus another great defensive game plan from Eden Prairie. They made a point of keeping length in either Connor Christensen or John Henry on Cade Haskins. Plus they backed off most of the rest of the perimeter roster for DLS. The talk on defense and execution of switches both during a screen and switch back to matchups off the ball when they had a chance was high level stuff that you just don't see in high school. Great execution of the plan and attention to detail.
As to the game, Haskins answers a pair of Henry triples to keep DLS within 13-10 at the 12 minute mark. Then a 10-0 EP run bookended by Christensen buckets. DLS does make the game plan pay with Semaj Hart and Evan Boyd hitting 3s late in the half. 34-26 EP at the half. Drake Dobbs for 3 off a quality set. Then Henry with back to back 3s including another great set for the 2nd one. Henry ends the 13-0 run with yet another bomb as he gets loose in transition. 50-30 EP with 8:43 left and this one is over. John Henry leads Henry with 7 triples and 23 points. Drake Dobbs with 3 triples and 15 points of his own. The defense holds Cade Haskins to 11 points, 8 in the 1st half and a late 3. Jalen Travis also scores 11 for the Islanders. Keijuan White adds 8 of his 10 in the 1st half with a couple of open 3s.
De La Salle was patient on offense looking for good shots and ran good screening combinations. Haskins was using physical screens from guys like Travis all night. The defense switching and lower shouldering those screens to get thru was just too good from EP. Including this game, 7 of the last 9 for EP are on the road. That includes the monster road game at Minnehaha on Tuesday, Feb 18th. This game starts a 5 game home stretch for De La Salle. They have 4 league home games and the next road game is in 2 weeks at #3AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall.

The Battles of Midway
We resume our St. Paul programming this week with a split doubleheader. A chance to cross the final 2 teams left to see off the EMAC list with Groves visiting Hmong Academy in an early 4:25 start. Then down the road we go for a St. Paul City showdown between Central and Highland Park. Both teams coming in 1 game behind Johnson for the top spot in the league.
Game 1: Hmong Academy 79 Groves Academy 59
Alfie Galle 3 inside hoops early for Groves against the small Hmong Academy lineup. Then the Warriors get their shooting going. Calvin Yang bangs home 5 triples. Elijah Vang with 2 triples of his own and converts a turnover. Groves goes 8 minutes without a FG as Hmong Academy goes on a 27-4 run. Elijah Vang adds 4 free throws as the Warriors stretch the lead to 43-28 at the half. A couple of Groves triples early in the 2nd half cut the lead to 11. Elijah Vang spins for 2 and Calvin Yang hits yet another 3. No more danger from there as the Warriors coast to the win after that. Junior guard Calvin Yang makes 6 3s and finishes with 26 points. Elijah Vang adds 3 triples and 23 points for Hmong Academy. Post Alfie Galle leads Groves with 29 points. Daniel Schoenfelder chips in with 13. Too many turnovers for Groves. Hmong Academy's 1st half shooting vs the 2-3 zone was critical too. Groves won the 1st meeting by 9 between the teams. Both teams are now 2-10 in the EMAC and tied for 8th. They are 2 games out of the last spot held by AFSA.
Game 2: St. Paul Central 49 St. Paul Highland Park 46
Good size student sections on hand for this one. Nico Peterson 3 early blocks to set the tone of a defensive struggle. He also contributes on offense with a free throw and a post up that results in a dunk. Offense hard to come by as its 9-8 Highland Park at the 9:35 mark. Jalen Cardenas off the Central bench with a putback and converts a turnover into a layup. Kaden Doram scores inside and adds a 3 point play as Central opens up a 22-11 lead. Peterson scores the last 4 of the half to keep the Scots within 24-17 at the break. He had 4 1st half field goals, the rest of the Highland Park roster had 3.
Central threatens to run away with this one early in the 2nd half. Gavin Gothard with a steal for a 3 point play. Cardenas 2 layups, Highland misses 4 of 5 FTs and Gothard with a floater. Donnie Preston with a nice cut for a layup out of 5 out offense. Its a 14-3 Minutemen run and Central pushes the lead to 40-22 with 9 minutes left. Then Paul Revere yelled THE SCOTS ARE COMING, THE SCOTS ARE COMING. Peterson with 2 FTs off a SLOB. Then he'll get a strip out top and he goes the other way for the poster dunk on somebody's poor head and the foul. 2 more Central turnovers for 2 more Scots layups. Peterson a putback for a 3 point play. Joey Kottke knocks down a kickout 3 and scores another hoop. Central turns it over again and Highland Park has the ball back down 2 with 4 minutes left. But they take a bad 3 to not convert that possession. Timeout Central with the ball up 2 and 3:14 left.
They come out of the timeout with THE WORLD'S WORST OFFENSE. That lasts the 1st half of the 90 second possession before we're back to 5 out. The end result is a Central turnover with 1:45 left. But Highland Park gives the ball right back with an illegal screen. Central makes bonus free throws but Kottke counters with a 3 to cut it to 1 with 1 minute left. Central holds and then misses 2 FTs with 22.8 left. Highland Park takes their last timeout with 17.6 left but can't convert. Central makes 1 free throw with 7.6 left. Last chance for Highland Park down 2 without a timeout. They'll push and their attempt is no good, mad scramble and as we have a putback attempt off goes the horn. Couldn't hear that or the whistle. Its a shooting foul against Central and we'll put 1 second up on the clock. 1st free throw is no good. Second is missed intentionally but its a lane violation. Central makes 1 FT with 0.6 left for the final margin. Highland Park now 5-12 overall, 3-2 in the St. Paul City. Central now 7-8 overall, 5-1 in the St. Paul City. Central visits Johnson next Tuesday night for what is likely the chance to split the conference crown. But due to the Rose Bowl rule, Johnson would host the Twin Cities Game if there's a tie with Central. Johnson won the 1st meeting at Central by 6 earlier this month.
And Then There Were Three
(microphone emoji) I will, follow you will you, follow me. All the, days and nights that we, know will be (/microphone emoji). The title is such a fantastic Genesis album with that hit Follow You Follow Me. Its a race to see all 62 teams in class AAAA this season. So that drives most of this week's schedule as I cross 2 more off the list on back to back nights. That gets me down to 3 AAAA teams left to see. Tuesday was a trip to Tartan for a 2nd place Metro East showdown with Hastings. Then a Wednesday trip to see the snow makeup game in the NW Suburban between Elk River and Spring Lake Park. Hot dogs in each location. No fruit punch sports drink so that means a treat of A&W and Pepsi for beverages.
Tuesday: Tartan 65 Hastings 56
The winner of this one would stay 1 game behind North St. Paul for the top spot in the Metro East. Tartan's hot shooting threatens to blow the game open early. Dorian Singer 2 bombs. Broderick Binns and Joe Kearney from deep. Soph wing Marko Vuckomanovich off the bench with 2 treys as well. Those 6 makes allow Tartan to open up a 25-13 lead at the 5:52 mark. Hastings claws their way back with their own shooting. Devon Haraldson for 3 and a scoop for 2. Then a couple more Hastings triples to close the gap to 32-27 at the half.
Kearney with another triple with 16:40 left to push the lead to 7. But that's the last Tartan triple of the night. The rest of the night is a defensive, foul shooting slug fest. Izzy Arnold up and under for 2 plus another Haraldson 3 in an 8-2 Raiders run. 37-36 Tartan with 13:40 left. Tartan's defense then holds Hastings without a FG for more than 11 minutes. Tartan takes advantage 18-7 during that 11+ minutes to go up by 12. Haraldson finally breaks the run with a 3 with 2:30 left. He scores 10 points in that last 2:30 but the margin is too big. That's half of his 20 points for the game. That leads all scorers. Langston Binns only 3 FG but 9 FTs for 17 points. Dorian Singer with 14. Joe Kearney adds 3 triples and 11 points. Hastings rebounded nicely from this loss with a quick turnaround home win over South St. Paul.
Wednesday: #6AAAA Spring Lake Park 91 Elk River 49
Elk River with a huge roster of 6'8" and 6'9" varsity starters plus 7 foot and 6'8" on the JV. Note to self: I need some of whatever is in the water. Story of this one was Elk River turnovers and too much SLP firepower. Spring Lake Park uses a 10-0 run with a Gabe Myren steal for a dunk and then another steal for an assist on a Jacob Say layup. During the run Myren sits with 2 fouls. Elk River gets 6 in a row to cut the margin to 36-23 which gets a coach Guzy timeout. Myren returns out of that timeout after a 4 minute break and he dunks 2 more turnovers. The rout is on from there. Full 9 minutes of running time in this one after SLP leads by 25 at halftime. Spring Lake Park has 4 starters reach double figures. Gabe Myren 18, Blake Remme 17, Jacob Say and Kaleb Skelly 14 each. Skelly with 12 of his 14 in the 1st half when the Panthers had Myren and Remme with 2 fouls. Alex Eng with 10 to lead Elk River.

No triple digits no problem
Prologue
To St. Paul Washington for a rematch with St. Paul Harding. These teams put up a 109-106 game at the Trinity holiday tournament. Simeon Sharp going for 58 for Harding in that game. Sharp doesn't play the 1st half tonight, but we still get moments of that same frenetic pace. Hot dog and Gatorade on the menu. That and the history in the banners on the wall both worth chewing on.
Season Ticker:
Harding taking it to Washington inside early. Between that and 3 illegal screens, all 3 bigs for Washington are quickly in foul trouble. Alex Addai and Sam Gray doing the damage inside for the Knights. They combine for 9 inside points in a 15-2 run. 21-6 Harding at 7:30 after they tip a miss in. Addai sitting with 2 fouls and Drew White gets it going for Washington. White 2 and the foul, off the ball screen for 3 and let's add 3 more. He'll add bonus free throws and then 2 more free throws. The Washington run is 17-1 and the Eagles take a 23-22 lead. Zaveon Smith scores the last 6 Washington points of the half. Eagles take a 30-27 lead to the locker room.
Second half is back and forth with Simeon Sharp entering the lineup. DeCarian Atkins productive for Harding from his guard spot early in the half. He goes triple, 2 FTs and a drive. Its a 10-1 Harding run for a 37-34 Knights lead with 15 minutes left. Sharp with a 3, 1-3 FTs and a coast to coast foray. Andreas Green with a couple of 3s to counter that. 47-46 Washington with 10 minutes left.
Atkins 2 more basket attacks. White responds with a 3 and a bucket. Sharp with bonus FTs and a bucket plus bonus FTs around a Smith triple. 59 all with 3:25 left. White free throw followed by a Smith steal and assist. Sharp counters with a hoop. White and Sharp trade a free throw. 63-62 Washington with 1:26 left. Smith to the rack to stretch the lead to 3. Harding 3 misses but Washington turns it over twice. So Harding has a BLOB with 30 seconds left but Smith steals and makes 1 out of 2 FTs to seal it. Washington wins 66-62.
Post Game:
Harding falls to 4-11 overall, 2-3 in the St. Paul City. Simeon Sharp sits the 1st half and scores 15 in the 2nd half. Jitterbug guard DeCarien Atkins 12 of his 15 in the 2nd half. The size dominated the 1st 10 minutes but did very little after that. A quick turnaround for the Knights at Highland Park tomorrow. They host South on Thursday and visit section foe Richfield Saturday afternoon.
Drew White with 5 triples and 27 points on the night to lead Washington. 15 of those points in the second half. Zaveon Smith with 12 of his 22 in the final half. Andreas Green with a cold night shooting making just a couple of 3s. But the 2 he made were critical to keeping Harding from opening up a lead. Washington improves to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the St. Paul City. They too have a quick turnaround with league leader Johnson coming in tomorrow. Then a trip to Humboldt on Friday.
