Ah the joy that is bracket play at the MN Select Classic
Session 1
17U Playin game in the main gym with the SW MN Heat taking on the MN Heat Elite. The Heat can't hit a shot in the 1st half and SW leads 34-27 at the break in a major shocker. Zach Riedeman goes off in the 2nd half for the Heat, SW can't hit a shot and the 2nd half is a another world as the Heat beat SW 73-48. Riedeman finishes with at least 20 points.
Session 2
MN Southside against the Heat Select team in a 15U quarterfinal. Southside 9-2 before a brief Heat comeback. Southside moves on 57-32. In the 3 remaining 17U playin games, Comets Blue defeats Select Kruger and Triple Threat-Weber defeats Prior Lake. Finally a great finish between MN Select James and Comets North. Jeremiah Tolbert with a 3 point play in the last minute for Select to send the game to OT. Then he makes a layup with 45 seconds left in OT for a 64-61 lead. Select James hangs on 64-63.
Session 3
Heat Elite 17s with a quick turnaround as they get 43 Hoops-Hemmingsen in the 1st 17U quarterfinal. Vinard Birch from the top 17U team for 43 Hoops making an appearance in the stands in this one. Nick Quicksell with a hot start in the 2nd half to keep the game close. 43 Hoops stretches a close game to an 8 point lead with 7:42 remaining before Zach Riedeman makes 3 of 4 from the stripe and then a triple to tie the game at 53 with 4:45 left. 43 Hoops counters with a 10-0 run to seal the game. Chris McMorris (Osseo) with the big dagger triple to end the run with 2:24 left. 43 Hoops Hemmingsen moves to the semis with the 72-65 win. The anticipated matchup of Dominique Dawson (43 Hoops) vs Ryan Duxbury (MN Heat) inside never really materialized which was disappointing to me as a fan as it would have been fun to see them get a big number touches against each other.
Session 4
The other 3 17U quarters are here. 94 Ft of Game against MN Select-James. Select with a 1st half lead of 6 that gets cut to 1 at the break. 94 Ft pulls away in the last 11 minutes but gives up 7 in a row late to make it interesting. 94 Ft moves on 48-43.
43 Hoops-Carr big over Comets Blue 79-49, Redhawks blow out Triple Threat. In 16U, 43 Hoops II struggled early with Wizard's Den but got thru that for a 15 point halftime lead and a 56-37 victory.
Session 5
20-11 MN Southside over Comets Elite in the 1st 15U semifinal before I hustle back to the activity center for 3 16U quarterfinals (Southside moves on to the 15U final). Heat Elite 16s continue to crush opponents as they had a 49-18 halftime lead on Comets White, 77-30 final there. TNL up 7 on MSB with 5 minutes left, but MSB right back with 7 in a row to tie it 1 minute later. TNL wins 66-61.
MN Select with another team in a struggle as their 16s took on TC Elite. Select up 50-47 with 1:45 left but TC Elite puts back a missed FT for a 52-51 lead with 1:15 left. Chris Thompson (Edina) with a layup with 24 seconds left and TC Elite leads 54-53. They get a strip with 5 seconds left and make 2 FTs for a 56-53 victory.
Session 6
To the semifinals for the 17U bracket. 43 Hoops Carr vs 94 Ft of Game. A triple at the halftime horn gives 43 Hoops Carr a 36-24 halftime lead. Still an 11 point game with 10 minutes left but a 9-1 run over 2 minutes takes care of that and 43 Hoops Carr moves on to the the title game with a 73-56 win.
43 Hoops Hemmingsen vs Mpls Redhawks in the other 17U semi. A 7-2 43 Hoops run to end the half gives them a 37-28 halftime lead. Second half is a different story as the Redhawks win the 1st 7 minutes of the half 19-4 for a 47-41 lead. The lead is cut to 4 before a big John Rowland 3 with 6 minutes left pushes the margin back to 7 and the Redhawks move on 71-61.
In a major 15U semifinal shock, the Dakota Schoolers (a for real team) took out 43 Hoops 63-40. I don't think the Schoolers are that dominant and I don't think 43 Hoops is that bad, but a very impressive win (more on this later)
Session 7
Now the 16U semifinals get the stage all alone and what a letdown or should I say beatdown. Heat Elite blasts TNL 76-43 and 43 Hoops blasts TC Elite 83-45.
Session 8 (Championship Games)
To the 2 games I didn't see, the Dakota Schoolers win by 3 in double OT over Mpls Southside. Those 2 played to a terrific 7 point Southside win in pool play (a game that the Schoolers were up by 13 in the 1st half). MN Heat Elite won 57-42 in the 16U title game. It would have been very interesting to see them in the SW MN Heat spot in the 17U bracket.
To the 17U final between 43 Hoops Carr and the Redhawks. Close early before a 9-2 43 Hoops run forces a Redhawks timeout. 19-9 with 9:30 left in the 1st half. Redhawks out of the timeout with a 7-0 run and then Cory Booker with a 3 point play to cut the lead to 2. But the lead is back to 7 at the break, 36-29 43 Hoops. Estan Tyler 7 for 43 Hoops. Cory Booker 8, Parker Hines 7 for the Redhawks.
Booker with a jumper to tie the game at 38 with 12:40 left. 6 of the next 8 to 43 Hoops. Then a 10-0 Redhawks run as Sam Gullickson tops it off with back to back 3s. 50-44 Redhawks with 8 minutes left. 54-49 Redhawks with 3:20 left and then a big sequence. Jameson Parsons with a steal for 43 Hoops, John Rowland with a great block for the Redhawks but Thomas Schalk puts back the miss and is fouled for the point play. Schalk then puts back another miss and 43 Hoops is back on top 55-54 with 2:20 left as they effectively used their run and jump pressure. That ignited their crowd and bench and it fed off of itself. Booker misses at 1:40 and 43 Hoops holds. Parsons with 2 FTs at 41.4 for a 3 point lead. The Redhawks don't score but Parsons misses the front end of the 1 and 1. Marquel Curtis taps out the miss to Parsons and he makes 1 of 2 with 18.5 left. Hines scores and the Redhawks interestingly don't use their last timeout. Estan Tyler fouled with 6.7 left and makes 1 of 2. The Redhawks want to hustle the ball the halfcourt, but can't get it in. So they have to burn the timeout on the inbounds. 6.7 left to go full court down 3. Coach Birdsong draws up an a great play that gets Billy Chapman the ball ahead of his defender at halfcourt. He pulls up at the 3 point line since the wide open layup does no good and misses a great look at a 3 and 43 Hoops Carr wins the 2009 MN Select Classic 17U Championship 59-56.
Cory Booker was outstanding for the Redhawks with 20 points and 9 rebounds on my unofficial sheet. Parker Hines and John Rowland with 9 points each. Thomas Schalk with 11 points to lead the 43 Hoops balanced attack. Estan Tyler 8, Marquel Curtis and Jameson Parsons 7

11 sessions Saturday at the MN Select Classic. Here's what I saw during the day.
Session 1
TC Elite 16s up 28-23 at the break over Comets White. They quickly extend the lead to 13 and then out to 21 late. 63-45 final. MN Heat Select 15s open up a 20 point halftime lead that gets cut to 13 in the 2nd half but they win 59-44.
Top game of the session was the Comets Elite 15s against TC Elite Black. Black up 27-13 with 5:15 left in the 1st half but they give up a 17-4 Comets run to end the 1st half to only lead 31-30 at the break. Black by 7 with 8:32 to play and they up that lead to 10, but the Comets won't go away. Austin Pohlen (Grand Rapids) drills a triple with 2:07 left for a 63-61 Comets lead. Black with a triple with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 66. The Comets play for 1 and Jim Unger (Willmar) drives left baseline and makes a floater with 3 seconds left for a 68-66 Comets win. Nice comeback win for them against a solid TC Black team.
Session 2
To the main gym to check in on the Heat 17 Elites against Comets North. They're out of the gate 11-0 thanks to a quick start from Ryan Duxbury. The lead extends to 16 in the 1st half. The Heat don't put the game away and North is within 10 with 11:07 to play. A 12-2 Heat run over the next 2:45 puts the game out of reach. Heat win 67-52.
Session 3
I stay in the main gym for my 1st look at the Select-Kruger squad against the SW MN Heat. Worth noting here that this Heat team (not affliated or to be confused with the Minnesota Heat mentioned previously) is playing up a level as the TBD team in pool C. Marshall point guard Caleb Johnson on hand, but the Heat are so small he's playing the post. 16-6 Heat lead with 7 minutes left in the half as Zak Pendleton has a pair of triples. But the Heat go cold and Select comes back for a 22-18 lead at the half. The game never gets out of hand, but the Heat never really threaten. 57-53 Select wins. Caleb Johnson with 9 points and 14 rebounds for the Heat on my stat sheet.
Session 4
I like this gym as the 43 Hoops 16 B team is playing against the Comets White team. The Comets pack in a 1-2-2 zone daring 43 Hoops to shoot over it as they don't have the athletes to matchup. Works well as the Comets get out to a 8-2 lead with 12:29 left in the half (triples again) and coach Grant Hemmingsen is not at all pleased with his team's defense. They crank up a 3 quarter court 1-2-2 trap and Jeremy Borg's entrance into the game gives them a spark (a pair of high post buckets against the zone were big). The Comets may not have scored a field goal the rest of the half. 33-15 43 Hoops at the half but they shot 2-13 from 3 on my sheet.
TC Elite Black 15s steamroll the 14U Midtown Kings 77-33 after a 47-11 start. Heat Select 15s win 49-35 over MN Select. Comets 15 Elites up 14 with 3 to play against the Schoolers 14s but give up 9 in a row to make it interesting. Comets hold on 65-58.
Session 5
In 17s action, Prior Lake (a good chunk of their varsity team) against 43 Hoops II. Prior Lake out to a 14-5 lead with 8:30 left in the half in a shocker. So much for that, 43 Hoops comes back big to win 67-36. Dominique Dawson with 3 straight putbacks as the run put 43 Hoops over the top.
The rest of the games were 16s. MN Heat Elite 16s hammered the MN Select 16s 63-27 after giving up a bucket to start the game, then countering with a 12-0 run. Rob Daul with a nasty tape job on his leg thanks to softball. Almost looks like plaster of paris or a cast. TNL up 15 on Wizard's Den late in the 1st half. They raid the Den in the 2nd half for a 75-41 win.
Session 6
43 Hoops-Carr and the Heat 17 Elite roll in warmups for their clash in session 9. Carr by 23 at the half, Heat by 18 at the half. Heat win 79-45. 43 Hoops Carr wins 86-65.
Session 7
A nice 15U session with pools A and B up for grabs. In pool A, the Schoolers 15s vs MN Southside. In pool B, 43 Hoops-Daniels vs Heat Select. 43 Hoops up 33-5 with 7:20 in the 1st half. Yikes. Needless to say I saw that score from the main gym and immediately went back to the Southside game. Schoolers giving Southside all they want with a 21-8 lead with 8:39 left in the 1st half. Southside claws back and cuts the deficit to 32-28 at the break. Southside keeps it going in the 2nd half as they lead by 4 with about 10 minutes left and they win 64-57. In the Pool A 3rd place game, TC Elite White gets a layup with 17 seconds left for a 59-57 over the Tri-City Bulldogs.
Session 8
Back to the main gym to prep for the big 17U game, but 1st we have the 43 Hoops 16 B squad against TC Elite. 34-22 43 Hoops at the half. 42-36 43 Hoops with 9:30 to play and coach Hemmingsen not happy with his team's effort. They win 57-45.
Session 9
To the main attraction of the 1st 2 days, Heat Elite 17s vs 43 Hoops Carr 16s. 1st half very back and forth. 43 Hoops with a 27-24 lead. The Heat's Jesse George leads all scorers with 7 1st half points thanks to his outside shooting. Marquel Curtis leads 43 Hoops with 6 points in the half. 43 Hoops extends the lead to 8 with 13 minutes left. Then a pair of horrible charging calls on Ryan Duxbury and then the magical moment of the day. Zach Riedeman and Jordan Van Eps swap elbows and both get thrown out. But no free throws are shot. Very strange and very consistent with the strange officiating in this game. Curtis with a triple and the lead is 10 with the game being very helter skelter which favors 43 Hoops. 43 Hoops goes on to win 69-51. Jordan Smith with 4 triples and 14 points for the victors. Marquel Curtis and Ross Travis (nice minutes from him) with 11 each. Jesse George leads the Heat with 15 points and Nick Quicksell with 12 points on my sheet.
Session 10
The Redhawks use their talons to rip and tear apart Select-Kruger to the tune of 29-4 with 8 minutes left in the 1st half. 94 Feet only up 9 on SW MN Heat at the half but they roll to an 18 point win, 69-51. Redhawks win 63-31.
Session 11
Heat Select move on over the Midtown Kings in a 15U playin game. MN Select hang on in their 15U playin game with a 61-56 win over TC Elite White. 43 Hoops 16U Hemmingsen buries P-Town (a group of Wayzata kids) 95-26. Comets Blue with a 55-53 win over Select James to throw Pool A into complete chaos (bottom 3 teams all 1-2). But Select James still wins the point differental battle so I think they'll be the 2 seed from the pool.

Session 7
A nice 15U session with pools A and B up for grabs. In pool A, the Schoolers 15s vs MN Southside. In pool B, 43 Hoops-Daniels vs Heat Select. 43 Hoops up 33-5 with 7:20 in the 1st half. Yikes. 2009 MN Select Classic
1 nice gym setup, 3 courts, 3 sessions as we open in the activity center at St. Louis Park. 43 Hoops teams win at all levels in the early session. Dominque Dawson with 5 in a row late to help push 43 Hoops-Hemmingsen to a 53-37 win over MN Select James.
In session 2 the Dakota Schoolers 14s take out the Midtown Kings 14s 73-59. The Schoolers 15s won 52-39 over TC Elite White. MN Southside blows out the Tri-City Bulldogs 67-43 after starting the game on a 13-2 run with 6 points from Joey King.
In the late session, 43 Hoops Carr 16U blew out Triple Threat-Weber 77-29 and the score could have been much much worse in that 17U game. In 16U, MN Heat Elite finished the 1st half on a 25-4 run over the last 7 minutes vs TNL. 45-19 at the break and the Heat cruise 78-36.
Best game of the night was the Mpls Redhawks vs 94 Ft of Game. Andre Ingram not scoring but he controlled the paint with a minimum of 8 blocked shots and at least 8 boards. 94 Ft stayed ahead for almost the entire game but could never pull away. 37-30 94 Ft with 11:30 left but the Redhawks countered with 7 in a row to tie it within 2 minutes. John Rowland with his usual hot shooting and he nails a triple with 3:30 left to tie the game at 45. The Redhawks down 1 late, 46-45, and almost appear to hold for 1 shot. 94 Ft fouls with 9 seconds left and it turns out they have 1 to give. On the inbound, the Redhawks get a FT line look from Taylor Hanson for the lead with 3 seconds left. After a timeout, the Redhawks steal the long inbounds and hang on for a 47-46 win. Not an impressive performance by the Redhawks but they manage to get a victory anyway. Parker Hines did show flashes of staying at the high level of play he was at last weekend at the Pump N Run tournament.

2009 MN Select Classic
The pools for the 2009 MN Select Classic are out. Here are my thoughts
15U Pools
Pool A has MN Southside as my favorite with the Dakota Schoolers 15s, TC Elite White and Tri-City Bulldogs. Tri-City's talent can jump up and bite you at any time though.
Pool B has MN Select, MN Heat Select, Comets White and 43 Hoops. Don't know which 43 Hoops squad this is, but the Daniels squad or Gameli squad would have to be favored here.
Pool C TC Elite Black coming off a win at the Twin City Spring Jam and a good Comets Blue team, Midtown Kings and the Dakota Schoolers 14s are here. Tough to pick but I'll go with the top Comets club.
Quarterfinal winners: MN Southside, Comets Blue, 43 Hoops and TC Elite Black
Semifinals: MN Southside over Comets Blue, 43 Hoops over TC Elite Black.
Championship: 43 Hoops over MN Southside
16U Pools
In Pool A, TC Elite, MSB, 43 Hoops 2nd team, Comets 2nd team and P-Town. Last place finisher doesn't make the brackets. Give me 43 Hoops II to come out of here.
In Pool B, MN Select, TNL, MN Heat Elite and Wizard's Den. Heat Elite have to be the favorite here but this pool is no cakewalk. TNL won the 16U Twin City Spring Jam and the Select Team is no picnic to play against.
Straight 8 team bracket here.
Quarterfinal winners: 43 Hoops II over Wizard's Den, MN Select over TC Elite, MSB over TNL, Heat Elite over Comets II.
Semifinal winners: 43 Hoops II over MN Select, Heat Elite over MSB
Championship: Heat Elite over 43 Hoops II
17U Pools
Pool A: 43 Hoops II is here with Select-James, Prior Lake and Comets Blue. Have to take 43 Hoops II here.
Pool B: The top 43 Hoops 16s of Chris Carr are here. MN Heat Elite, Triple Threat and Comets North also in the pool. Top pool game of the weekend is Heat Elite vs 43 Hoops at 6:20 on Saturday night. Remember that the top kids from that Heat Elite team played for 43 Hoops last year (Duxbury, Brown, Quicksell, Franklin). Should be a great game of size and experience vs athletes and depth. I'll take 43 Hoops here.
Pool C: 94 Ft of Game, MN Select-Kruger and Redhawks are here. The 4th team is TBD, but could it be Al Harris's 43 Hoops team? That would be big. Redhawks are the team to beat here.
Quarterfinal winners: 43 Hoops II, Redhawks unless 43 Hoops Harris is here, 43 Hoops Carr, Select-Kruger or Redhawks (if 43 Hoops Harris attends).
Semifinal winners: Redhawks or 43 Hoops Harris over 43 Hoops Hemmingsen, 43 Hoops Carr over Redhawks or MN Select-Kruger
Championship: 43 Hoops Carr or 43 Hoops Harris
