Section Winners

I gave thoughts on 14 conferences plus independents.  I'll match that here with predictions for the winners of 14 metro area sections.  That includes the 6 local A, AA and AAA sections and all 8 AAAA sections.

4A: With Legacy moving up to section 6AA, its a really weak section.  New Life will have the chance to repeat.  Heritage is my pick here.  CHOF and Higher Ground are sleepers.

4AA: Minnehaha loses 2 major pieces.  Can somebody like St. Paul Academy jump up and over take them?  I don't see it but it should be very competitive.

5AA: Breck is the team to keep an eye on here and they're my pick.  But Holy Family with Kole Hanson and traditional power Minneapolis North will give them a run.  Blake and Maranatha won't be easy outs.  SW Christian could be a major sleeper here.

3AAA: South St. Paul is my pick to move on out of a weak section.  St. Thomas Academy and Highland Park are also contenders here.
4AAA: The defending state champion Totino-Grace moves to section 5AAA only to be replaced by the state runner up De La Salle.  Give me the Islanders in an epic 3rd game vs Columbia Heights.

6AAA: Benilde-St.Margaret's comes out of the class AAA section of death.  Orono and Delano are major contenders here.  Cooper and Richfield will be tough outs.

1AAAA:  Lakeville North owns this section and I can't pick against that.  I see another Lakeville city meeting for the state ticket.

2AAAA: Once again its the class AAAA section of death.  I'll take Minnetonka to repeat but Shakopee is a major threat here.  Chanhassen, Waconia and Eden Prairie all good enough to win it as well.

3AAAA: Eastview loses a ton but with Daniel Freitag now at Breck, they have the best player in a weak section.  Lightning move on.

4AAAA: East Ridge trying to rebound after a disappointing loss to White Bear Lake in last year's section final.  They're arguably the favorite.  But give me Tartan here as they haven't come out of the section in a long time.  Cretin-Derham Hall is a spoiler here.

5AAAA:  Park Center is the heavy favorite and pick here.  District rivals Osseo and Maple Grove are the other contenders.

6AAAA: Another year, another Hopkins vs Wayzata 3rd game for a section title.  Wayzata moves on.

7AAAA:  Another weak year in section 7 (does anybody know the last time this section won a game at state?).  I see it as a brother battle between Forest Lake and Duluth East.  Forest Lake gets my vote with everybody coming back.

8AAAA: This section provides great entertainment each year.  Buffalo repeats as section champs.

Season Thoughts

Let's begin with my take on the big elephant in the room, the shot clock.  I believe it will be far less noticed than many fans may expect. I recall watching a number of shot clock games last year where I didn't even realize it was in use until a long period into the game.  Where you will notice it is late in the game when you can't hold the ball.  With apologies to the Suggs/Holmgren triangle delay era, no more of pulling the ball out with 5 minutes to go.  I'm looking forward to seeing how teams manage the last 2-3 minutes.  The other strategy item to watch is what teams do at the end of the clock.  Is it just high pick and roll, do teams switch defenses late, how many late clock sets do teams have are just some of things I'll be watching for.  But overall I expect it to be less of a factor than some may expect.

Its another quality year of events on the season schedule.  The Border Battle at Benilde-St. Margaret's on January 20th is loaded.  With my Wisconsin roots, I'm really looking forward to that.  Though my outlandish Breakdown book prediction on it may come back to haunt me.  Also keep an eye on Saturday, January 6th.  That day is one of the more loaded game days for non-conference showdowns that's I've seen in a long time.  That's particularly true in AAA with Benilde-St. Margaret's at Totino-Grace and Alexandria visiting Orono.  That's a chance for locals to see Minnesota commit Grayson Grove.  A salute to General Grove for expanding the battle field.  You also have Lakeville South visiting Chanhassen, Minnetonka at De La Salle and a possible 7AAAA finals preview of Forest Lake visiting Duluth East that day.  Another future Rodent Gopher, Isaac Asuma and top ranked Cherry, will be in the metro for the tip off classic and over the holidays in the Concordia-St. Paul holiday event where they have a game on December 29th with Park Center.  The Asuma and Cash Chavis matchup will be fun to watch.

Its a new 2 year cycle of section assignment before the 6 year makeover.  Class AAAA should be deep again as Park Center and Wayzata look to make runs again.  Minnetonka and Buffalo also poised to make return trips.  Lakeville North looks to continue their dominance of section 1AAAA.  The top of AAA is stacked with Totino-Grace, Benilde-St. Margaret's, Orono, Alexandria, Hermantown, Mankato East and De La Salle.  The Breck vs Minnehaha dynamic in the IMAC will be fun in AA.  Not out of the question to see a 3rd meeting between those 2 at state.

2023-24 Lake Conference Preview

This is the 14th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  In this preview, I finish my look at my look at each of the metro area conferences with a look at the Lake Conference.  There's 1 more preview left.  That will include section predictions and what to watch.  For a list of all the season previews and how they are done, click here.

Buffalo Bison (2022-23 season 23-8, 7-5 Conference, Tie 3rd)
Wing Nate Dahl (24.1 PPG) was a Mr Basketball final 10 guy.  His production and clutch play will be hard to replace.  But the rest of the roster returns and is poised for another state trip.  Senior wings Grady Guidy (13.9 PPG) and Brody Wishart are the top offensive threats.  Those are just 2 of the 7 rotation members coming back.  The junior class is strong too.  Not much size but they will always run sound offense and play hard-nosed defense for coach Josh Ortmann.

Eden Prairie Eagles (2022-23 season 11-14, 2-10 Conference, 6th)
Zander Culver comes over from Roseville to replace David Flom as head coach after last year's off court controversy.  He'll have a strong perimeter group with juniors Max Lorenson (14.4 PPG) and JJ Sullivan (10.6 PPG) and soph Nolen Anderson (10.5 PPG).  There are questions up front but Cam Riggins-Brown and Parker Fahning should see time there.  Fahning's inside out ability should fit the system very well.  Frosh Ty Schlagel could be a rotation factor too.

Edina Hornets (2022-23 season 15-12, 6-6 Conference, 5th)
Coach Jon Bryant has 4 of his top 5 scorers coming back.  Wing Josiah Coleman (13.4 PPG) and versatile forward Daniel Molhoek (10.8 PPG) were the top 2 scorers last season.  Waylon Erlandson and Owen Kemper are returning perimeter starters.  Nick Presthus, Billy DeMars and Charlie Moore should also figure into the wing rotation.  Frosh Vince Cronin could step into a forward slot.

Hopkins Royals (2022-23 season 19-9, 7-5 Conference, tie 3rd)
Soph PG Jayden Moore (20.8 PPG) and junior SG Anthony Smith (20.8 PPG) form one of the top backcourts in the state.  Add in junior wings JJ Semanko (11 PPG) and Daveion Hart from last year's rotation as well.  They'll miss Vince Hillesheim (13.7 PPG) and his interior presence.  Jacob Rothman's pesky defense and toughness will be missed too.  Senior Anthony Walker will provide experience.

Minnetonka Skippers (2022-23 season 23-8, 8-4 Conference, 2nd)
The Skippers return their top 2 scorers.  PG Andy Stefonowicz (16.4 PPG) leads the offense not only in scoring but also with his poise.  He'll play at North Dakota State.  Wing Jordan Cain put up 15.8 PPG last season.  Wings Duke Richardson and Greyson Uelman are both shooters who can reach double figures on any night.  Wing Kayden Wells comes over from Benilde-St. Margaret's.  They'll need to play small and fast but have the firepower to do it once again.

St. Michael-Albertville Knights (2022-23 season 8-19, 1-11 Conference, 7th)
Forward Colton Demarais was a double figure scorer inside and needs to be replaced.  Freshman transfer Jack Thelen should step into his interior spot.  He's arguably the top 2027 big man in the state.  Juniors Jeremiah Johnson (11.3 PPG at PG) and Hudson Hochstedler (13.4 PPG) return to lead the offense on the perimeter.  Landon Riebel will be an inside out option.  Jordan Holm, Andrew Luster and guard Carter Arnlund also return to the rotation.

Wayzata Trojans (2022-23 season 27-4, 11-1 Conference, 1st, AAAA State Champions)
Wayzata has a 3 year streak of making the state title game with 2 titles to show for it.  That will be a tall task this year as they have to replace most of their rotation.  Creighton commit Jackson McAndrew (16.7 PPG) should have a big season and be a Mr. Basketball favorite.  Guard Ben Shaffer (4.7 PPG) and Drew Nepstad (4.1 PPG) are the 2 other rotation guys coming back.  Soph guard Isaac Olmstead should see a major role.  Soph Christian Wiggins is a rotation option too after spending last season at Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Predicted Order of Finish

Conference Overview
Despite some significant losses across the league, its another loaded year in the Lake.  The perimeter play with Jackson McAndrew, Jayden Moore, Andy Stefonowicz and others is top notch.  Three teams in the league made state in AAAA last year and I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case again.  Seeing 5 of them in a section final wouldn't be a surprise either.  Minnetonka gets my pick for the top spot with their offensive firepower.  Wayzata won't drop far as they'll plug in new pieces to go with the state's top senior. Buffalo beat Hopkins twice last year so I'll give them the nod for the 3rd spot.  Any of the top 4 could finish in any order so it should be exciting.  Edina and Eden Prairie make up the 2nd tier.  They're top half in any other league but this league is too deep.  Both have good young players to look forward to watching.  Eden Prairie has a new coach and system plus 2 head to head losses last year so I give Edina the nod for that 5th spot.  Both will play a spoiler role in the final league results.  Remember Edina beat Buffalo twice last year and Eden Prairie gave Wayzata its only league loss.  St. Michael-Albertville gets the leftover spot.

2023-24 South Suburban Conference Preview

This is the 13th preview in my 2023-24 Season Preview Series.  In this preview, we head south for a look at the South Suburban Conference.  For a list of all the season previews and how they are generated, click here.

Apple Valley Eagles (2022-23 season 4-23, 2-16 Conference, 10th)
Two important pieces of the perimeter rotation need to be replaced with the graduation of Eli Ocharo and transfer of 2026 Joe Mitchell.  Mitchell was the lone double figure scorer at 15 PPG.  Senior guard Nati Tizazu (8 PPG) is the top returning scorer.  Sophs Camare Young and Ryan Christiansen once again figure to play major minutes.  Isiah Ford also returns to the rotation.  Limited size and firepower as the Eagles continue to rebuild in the post-Jones era.

Burnsville Blaze (2022-23 season 9-17, 4-14 Conference, 9th)
Wings Khalif Bettis and JT Thornton were last year's top 2 scoring options and need to be replaced.  Guards Charlie Pettis and Jeremy Sherlock look to step into those roles.  7-foot shot blocker Henry Buchanan is a defensive factor inside.  Scoring will be hard to come by.

Eagan Wildcats (2022-23 season 16-13, 8-10 Conference, tie 6th)
4 year starting wing Emmanuel Schmitter (13.1 PPG) and shooter Oscar Khazon (11.8 PPG) need to be replaced after being last year's top 2 scorers.  Guard Max Buslee (9.8 PPG) is the top returning scorer.  Seniors Jack Hansen and Trevor Syring form a solid center duo.  Charlie Birk will be a wing shooting option.  Liam Madigan, Jack Kruger and Owen Ford also saw major minutes last season. Soph wing Alex Schroepfer should play a bigger role too.

Eastview Lightning (2022-23 season 23-9, 14-4 Conference, 2nd)
Assistant Danny Olsen takes over the program as Paul Goetz retired.  He has to rebuild the rotation.  But he gets the advantage of having 1 guy back in Colorado St commit Jon Mekonnen (18 PPG).  Expect a huge year from the lefty forward.  Nolan Segner is another front line option.  Junior Jack Frigstad should also see rotation minutes.  Experience and guard play are the major concerns.

Farmington Tigers (2022-23 season 17-11, 10-8 Conference, tie 4th)
Three starters including last year's leading scorer, PG Baiden Bean (16.1 PPG), need to be replaced.  Brandon Hrncir (12.6 PPG) and junior Nik Domier (7.2 PPG) make up a solid front court duo.  Wing Tyler Beckwith (7.8 PPG) is another solid starting option.  Junior Cole Wilcek will also see many significant minutes.  Junior Jonah Ask will be a guard option.

Lakeville North Panthers (2022-23 season 28-4, 16-2 Conference, 1st)
Wisconsin commit Nolan Winter (23.4 PPG) will be hard to replace inside.  They also lose 15.9 PPG from wing Hudson Vaith.  But the Panthers still have a ton to work with.  Wing Jack Robison (15.1 PPG) makes whatever play is necessary.  He'll play at Wisconsin next year with Winter.  Matt Drake missed time due to health issues last season.  His toughness and shot making from the point guard spot is very valuable.  Forward Andrew Quam is coming off a very productive summer and should step into a critical role.  Grant Ryan should step into a big wing role.

Lakeville South Cougars (2022-23 season 17-12, 10-8 Conference, tie 4th)
The Cougars appear ready to pounce on a great season.  DaMarcus Burks (11.5 PPG) and Ryan Johnson (10.2 PPG) accepted D2 offers after playing well in the summer.  Junior PG Keaton Ressler also returns.  Then there's the wildcard in senior wing Marley Baah-Yeboah.  He's the best athlete of the bunch but he's coming off a knee injury that cost him most of last season.  Joe Hager will man the inside.  Lauson Schmidt and Carter Wilson returns in reserve perimeter roles. 

Prior Lake Lakers (2022-23 season 13-15, 8-10 Conference, tie 6th)
The Lakers have big losses yet again with 6 of their top 7 scorers graduting.  Forward Joe Ofori and his 16.3 PPG is 1 of the double figure scorers gone.  Junior guard Luke Loehlein (7.9 PPG) is the top returning scorer.  Junior PG Cade Wozney returns to the starting lineup.  Juniors Brayden Thompson and Norbu Jenpa are other rotation options.

Rosemount Irish (2022-23 season 11-17, 5-13 Conference, 8th)
Luck wasn't with the Irish last season as they didn't fare as expected.  Both double figure scorers have graduated including star guard Anish Ramlall (16.1 PPG).  Guard Bennett Arlandson and forward Kyson Leenderts (6.5 PPG) are the top returnees.  Seniors Ben Siwek and Will Peroutka also return to the rotation

Shakopee Sabers (2022-23 season 16-11, 13-5 Conference, 3rd)
Shakopee had to replace their entire starting lineup and still finished 3rd.  Lefty PG Jalen Langsy (18.8 PPG) leads a strong perimeter group.  Shooters Isaac Snell (12 PPG) and Eli Schroeder (5.8 PPG) join him.  Then there's Kaden Braxton, Devin Pass and Isaac Cordes returning too.  Luke Wherley is the primary forward but he can step out and shoot it too.

Predicted Order of Finish

The top 3 are going to be really tough.  I take Shakopee because they have so much returning.  But you can make an argument for the other 2 as well.  Eastview has the best remaining player and they always reload so I'll go 4th with them.  Farmington will give them a run for that spot with their size.  Eagan and Prior Lake battle for the 2 spots behind them.  Burnsville is the next best and Apple Valley continues a rough rebuild.

2023-24 Suburban East Conference Preview

This is the 12th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  In this preview, I continue my look at the local big schools with a look at the Suburban East Conference.  For a list of all the season previews and how they were generated, click here.

Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders (2022-23 season 14-14, 9-9 Conference, tie 4th)
The Raiders have to replace a bunch of offense on the wing with the graduations of Jake Little, Luke Jacobson and Adam Tauer.  All 3 averaged double figures last year.  Sam Koopmeiners is also a loss on the front line.  Senior wing Miles Bollinger is a top option.  Junior Monteff Dixon (7.8 PPG) should be ready for full time minutes inside.  Soph guards Jason Johnson and Apple Valley transfer Joe Mitchell will lead the backcourt.  Senior Anthony Knight (5.3 PPG) is a veteran guard as well.

East Ridge Raptors (2022-23 season 22-7, 17-1 Conference, 1st)
Shooting guard Alex Mattes needs to be replaced after averaging 17.2 PPG.  The perimeter play is still strong with soph PG Cedric Tomes (12.4 PPG) and senior wing Charlie Theis (10.7 PPG).  Tomes has some of the deepest shooting range in the state.  Parker Wellman and Grant Miley are also experienced guards.  Charlie Bern (8 PPG) should see a bigger role in a combo forward spot this season.  That's because big men Brayden Carlson and Daejohn Thomas have transferred.  Carlson is now at Holy Family while Thomas has returned to St. Paul Johnson.  Junior Kyle Frandt is another possible front line option.

Forest Lake Rangers (2022-23 season 9-18, 6-12 Conference, 8th)
Coach Kyle McDonald looks for his Rangers to make a leap with his senior laden rotation coming back.  Concordia St. Paul commit Owen Waldoch (16.5 PPG) leads the way from his inside out forward spot.  Brennan Sauvageau and Braeden Turk return on the wings as double figure scorers.  Nolan Dumonceeaux (6.8 PPG) returns at a guard spot.  Soph DJ Westman (4.4 PPG) will join them.  Reid Olson (5.9 PPG) is another front line option.

Irondale Knights (2022-23 season 11-16, 7-11 Conference, 7th)
The Knights have to replace most of their rotation.  Junior guard Jake Dedominces (6.9 PPG) is the top returnee.  Latrell Bagget will join him in the backcourt.  Forward Mekhi Edwards (12.2 PPG) is now at St. Cloud Tech.  That leaves a big hole on the front line.  The rest of the roster has very limited experience.   

Mounds View Mustangs (2022-23 season 17-11, 9-9 Conference, tie 4th)
Senior forwards Eli Roe (5.2 PPG) and Joey Fretheim (11.6 PPG) will be the main offense.  Juniors Nate Edelman and Jacob Sampson will be big man options.  The 17.4 PPG from guard Cody Deluce will be hard to replace.  Junior Cody Loegering looks to fill in that role.  Senior Tyler Nystrom looks to play a perimeter role as well.

Park Wolfpack (2022-23 season 9-17, 5-13 Conference, 9th)
The rumors of head coach Mike Weah's demise are greatly exaggerated (see last year's Park preview if you don't understand).  All 3 double figure scorers including wing OT Omot (16.2 PPG) have graduated.  Junior Miskar Esayas (7.1 PPG) and senior Tayvion Stewart (6.9 PPG) lead the backcourt.  Forward Dominic Batts (4.7 PPG) also returns as a front court option.

Roseville Raiders (2022-23 season 14-13, 8-10 Conference, 6th)
Former Minneapolis Washburn and Bloomington Kennedy head man Jamin Cook takes over for Zander Culver.  Culver took the Eden Prairie job in the offseason.  He has a solid backcourt rotation of seniors to work with.  Ataa-Adjetey Mensah is the leading scorer at 13.4 PPG.  Nate Hatteburg (8.9 PPG) and Will DeVries (4.9 PPG) are also returning starters.  Jamin Cook transfers in from Robbinsdale Cooper as well.  The front line needs to be replaced including 13 PPG from Evan Fischer.

Stillwater Ponies (2022-23 season 18-10, 13-5 Conference, 3rd)
The Ponies have to replace star point guard Max Shikenjanski (26.7 PPG).  The entire offense revolved around his creation.  Looking forward to seeing if they stay with the same system or how they tweak it.  Guard Tanner Thomson (13.8 PPG) also needs to be replaced.  They still have guards Brett Hilde (6.7 PPG) and Joe Hoheisel (4.4 PPG).  Henry Zollar and Aiden Hammond will join them.  Big man Lake DeJongh (6.4 PPG) will be the primary interior guy.  Joe Fredkove will also be an interior rotation guy.

White Bear Lake Bears (2022-23 season 23-8, 15-3 Conference, 2nd)
Aaron Turner takes over for Greg Burke as the head man.  He has a standout senior class to replace.  Star guard Jack Janicki (20.8 PPG) is now at Wisconsin.  Forward Wyatt Hawks (14.8 PPG) is now at St. Cloud State.  Sawyer Collins is the lone returning guard.  Soph forward Colin Piper should become the primary option after seeing reserve minutes last season.  Korey Raheem, Colin McMonigal, Anthony Turner and Austin Gibson are looking to step up into rotation roles.

Woodbury Royals (2022-23 season 4-23, 1-17 Conference, 10th)
Junior guard Marquivion Beasley (10.2 PPG) is the lone returning double figure scorer.  Junior Finn Norman figures to play a bigger role as a big wing or stretch 4.  Senior Quentin Cobb-Butler also returns to the perimeter rotation.  Seniors Liam Fromnelt and Isaiah Tisdle should see rotation minutes as well.

Conference Overview:
Its a down year in the Suburban East.  East Ridge once again is the huge favorite here.  Then I see CDH moving back up to their usual top of the league location.  But Forest Lake with everybody back and the losses around the rest of the league looks to make a big jump and challenge them.  Stillwater is the best of the rest despite losing all everything Max Shikenjanski.  Mounds View and White Bear Lake battle to stay in the top half but they too need to replace top scorers.  Roseville will look to challenge them too in that middle area but they have to adjust to a new coach and system.  Then a drop to the bottom 3.  Woodbury with the most returning so I'll put them there.

2023-24 NW Suburban Conference Preview

This is the 11th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  Its the 3rd and final week of the preview series and that means its time for the big schools.  Most of the teams this week will be AAAA schools.  In this preview, a look at the Northwest Suburban Conference. Andover Huskies (2022-23 season 23-9, 16-3 Conference, 1st North)
The Huskies have to replace their entire starting lineup.  That includes their star backcourt of Ben Kopetzki (25.5 PPG) and Sam Musungu (21.2 PPG).  They'll also miss the inside out forward play of Landyn Nelson (11.5 PPG).  Chase Pemberton and Luke Dehnicke should move into starting roles after being in reserve spots last season.  Guards Cameron Begalle and Alex Kopetzki should see increased roles as well with Kopetzki likely taking over the PG duties for his brother.  Ayden Shaw is an interior option.

Anoka Tornadoes (2022-23 season 12-16, 6-13 Conference, 5th North)
Junior guards Peyton Podany (13.5 PPG) and Trey Borchers (14.7 PPG) return after leading the team in scoring last season.  Soph Dre Ellis should also be a part of the backcourt rotation along with juniors Caleb Sherer and Afy Ibekwe.  Evan Freking looks to replace Reagan Reeder (13 PPG) as the interior guy. 

Blaine Bengals (2022-23 season 15-12, 11-8 Conference, 3rd North)
Forwards Ryan Bohlman (18.4 PPG) and Zack Schusted (14.5 PPG) are 2 major losses for the Bengals.  They also lose a reserve big man too so size is a question mark.  They'll be strong on the wing with shooter Ethan Pettis (16 PPG) and Alvin Payne (11.6 PPG).  Jordan Lyon (9 PPG) also returns to the starting lineup at a guard spot.

Centennial Cougars (2022-23 season 5-22, 3-16 Conference, 6th North)
Most of the roster returns.  Guard Ty Burgoon (14.9 PPG) and junior wing Jackson Driessen (10.5 PPG) are the top scoring threats.  Jack D'Agostino and Timmy Ball provide the interior play.  Seniors Will Quick and Luke Gunderman will be other primary rotation options.

Champlin Park Rebels (2022-23 season 10-16, 8-11 Conference, 4th North)
Champlin Park has to replace 4 starters.  That includes leading scorer Luke Graff (14 PPG) who transferred to Holy Family.  Wing Amory Peterson (11.8 PPG) will be the primary offensive option.  Nobody else averaged more than 4.5 PPG.  Senior guards Jevon Kiros and Parrish Wallace will look to step into bigger roles.  Lefty Dominick Mueller will be a front line option.

Coon Rapids Cardinals (2022-23 season 6-21, 1-18 Conference, 7th North)
Most of the roster returns from the end of last season.  But that was after 2 pieces were already gone.  The remaining group includes 3 double figure scorers. Lefty PG Jerry Freeman (12.2 PPG) and wings Jaxon Young (11.6 PPG) plus Jackson Hettwer (10.2 PPG) are the top options.  They'll be experienced but how will they rebound from a rough 2nd half.

Elk River Elks (2022-23 season 12-15, 8-11 Conference, 5th West)
The Elks have to replace 4 starters including guard Cade Osterman (21.8 PPG) and wing Carson Haack (19.3 PPG).  Guards TJ Caouette (6.5 PPG) and soph Levi Harris are top perimeter options.  Owen Van Drehle is a top forward option.  The rest of the rotation will be very inexperienced.

Maple Grove Crimson (2022-23 season 21-7, 15-4 Conference, 2nd North)
The Crimson need to replace center Lincoln Palbicki (11 PPG) and PG Raoul Vaidya (10 PPG) as part of losing 4 starters.  SG Henry Stang (11.8 PPG) returns after leading the team in scoring.  Gannon McGuire and Brady Laliberte will be solid wings who can knock down shots.  Josh Femrite will take over the primary minutes in the middle.  A solid group of juniors plus soph Kaden Harney will provide quality depth.

Osseo Orioles (2022-23 season 16-13, 11-8 Conference, 3rd West)
Wing Trey Smith (16.5 PPG) is the biggest loss.  He's now playing at Minnesota-Duluth.  Senior PG De'Mari Larkins (15.8 PPG) is the lone double figure scorer returning.  Fellow seniors Ty Swanson and Temi Deneno return with him in the backcourt.  Aaron Smith returns as big body in the middle.  Jaymeson Travis will be another interior option.

Park Center Pirates (2022-23 season 28-3, 17-2 Conference, 1st West, AAAA State runner-up)
The Pirates replaced 5 starters and were still an inch away from winning a state title.  This year they return 3 major pieces.  PG Cash Chavis (16 PPG), wing Jackson Fowlkes (13 PPG) and shot blocking forward Chiang Ring (10.5 PPG) make up a talented and experience nucleus.  Add in Osseo transfer Temi Omotoyinbo on the other wing and you have a roster looking to make another state title run. Aiden Memene is an experienced guard that returns.  They'll miss the clutch play of CJ O'Hara and dirty work from Kaden Cook.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Falcons (2022-23 season 10-18, 6-13 Conference, Tie 6th West)
Coach Rob Ware used a ton of players last season and hopefully that experience pays off this season.  Leading scorer Owen Skram's shooting and 16.1 PPG will be missed.  Wing Seth Newbern (15 PPG) is the top returnee.  Junior Desmond Ware (8.2 PPG) returns at the point.  Senior guard Navonn Fields and Charles Scott are 2 experienced rotation options.  Fitz Freeman is an effective option at center.  Senior Langden College can also give them big man minutes.

Rogers Royals (2022-23 season 8-19, 6-13 Conference, Tie 6th West)
Mike Pomroy returns to the metro to take over the Royals program.  He was at the University of South Dakota women's program but has previous experience as the Irondale girls head coach.  Rogers has 3 of its top 4 scorers returning.  They are all on the perimeter.  Senior guards Blake Dalluge (16.2 PPG) and Jaxson Fuller (12.8 PPG) are the 2 returning double figure scorers.  Junior wing Colton Kazmierkoski (9 PPG) should be a double figure scorer this year too.  Treyvon Mix, Adam Broberg and Alexander Kane will also see perimeter minutes.  Michael Watson's 7.4 PPG inside will need to be replaced.

Spring Lake Park Panthers (2022-23 season 9-18, 9-10 Conference, 4th West)
The Panthers lose 2 of their 3 double figure scorers.  The wing position should be strong with leading scorer Andrew King (14.3 PPG) and Myles Thomson (6.2 PPG) coming back.  Forward Brock Remme (9.3 PPG) also returns to the lineup.  Gavin Welch will fill some point guard minutes.  They'll need to find a replacement for Beau Johnson (10.5 PPG) in the middle.

Totino-Grace Eagles (2022-23 season 24-8, 16-3 Conference, 2nd West, AAA State Champion)
Coming off a state championship season, the Eagles now look to reload.  4 significant members of the rotation need to be replaced with 3 of them off to mid or high major basketball.  Guard Zy'Lerre Stewart (5.9 PPG) is the other major loss as he's transferred to Columbia Heights.  Forward Isaiah Johnson (12.4 PPG) had a terrific summer and has committed to play at Miami.  Expect a huge season from him.  Sophs Tian Chatman and Dothan Ijadimbola are 2 of the best in the class and will step right in to starting roles.  Junior guards Tyler Wagner (9.4 PPG) and Chace Watley are very experienced.  Wagner is one of the premier shooters in his class.  A talented freshman group waits behind them.

Conference Overview:
Major change to the league schedule this year as they decide to play a single round-robin league wide.  That means only 13 league games and more openings for those higher profile non-conference events.  Once again Park Center and Totino-Grace are the class of the league.  Park Center gets the home game plus they have experience so I'll take them.  Maple Grove and Osseo are the next tier.  Robbinsdale Armstrong will try to jump into that group.  Beyond that, it falls off to a ton of mediocrity.  That includes most of the entire former north division which is really down this year.  I'll take Anoka to make a jump with their returning guards.  Rogers also has some nice returning pieces for me to move them up.

2023-24 Metro West Conference Preview

This is the 10th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  Its now time for the big schools with the mostly class AAAA leagues are now on the list of previews.  In this preview, a look at the Metro West Conference.  For a list of all the season previews and how they are done, click here.

Benilde St. Margaret's Red Knights (2022-23 season 24-5, 12-2 Conference, 1st)
Coach Damien Johnson and his Red Knights look to make a state trip this season. 4 double figure scorers are back.  One of the state's top juniors, forward Jalen Wilson, leads the way with 18.2 PPG.  Junior lefty PG Jaleel Donley (13.8 PPG) is also a game changer.  Junior Abu Keita (10.6 PPG) returns on the wing.  Guard Ron Lee is another returning rotation option.  They do lose 3 rotation players due to transfers including Christian Wiggins, Kayden Wells and Colin Kirk so keep an eye on their depth.

Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars (2022-23 season 14-13, 7-7 Conference, 5th)
Wisconsin commit and league MVP Daniel Freitag (28.5 PPG) is now at Breck.  That might be the single biggest loss for any team in the state.  Junior guard Marcus Horton (9.6 PPG) leads the returnees.  Junior wing Thomas Rowland (5.2 PPG) will be another one of the limited scoring options.  Jonathan Weber will also give them backcourt minutes.  The roster has limited size too.

Chanhassen Storm (2022-23 season 15-14, 8-6 Conference, 4th)
The Storm is brewing with 3 top scorers coming back.  Senior PG Max Woods (22.6 PPG) appears poised for another monster season.  He ended last season with 30 point 2nd half outburst against Minnetonka in the section finals.  He has a couple of sharpshooters around him in Riley Johnson (14.6 PPG) and Evan Murray (10 PPG).  Junior Mikan Pelowski will be one option to clean up inside.

Chaska Hawks (2022-23 season 9-18, 5-9 Conference, 6th)
Three double figure scorers depart for the Hawks.  Junior forward Tray Lenzen (14.6 PPG) and freshman PG Tyler Forrest (9.6 PPG) are the top 2 returnees and guys they can build around.  Junior guard Jimmy Coddington and forward Carson Vollbrecht will also see major roles.  Senior guard Jameson Boyle is another ball handling option.

New Prague Trojans (2022-23 season 7-20, 4-10 Conference, 7th)
Junior wing Evan Weichart (20 PPG) is the top returnee for the Trojans.  He's joined by Henry Novak with 7.2 PPG.  George Songe (6.4 PPG) looks to pick up some scoring slack too.  PG Noah Washa (11.9 PPG) will be missed in the backcourt.

Orono Spartans (2022-23 season 26-6, 11-3 Conference, 2nd, AAA State 3rd place)
Isaiah Hagen with his 23.2 PPG and clutch play need to be replaced.  They'll also miss the backcourt experience of Kyle Kallenbach (11.9 PPG) and Grant Gunderson (9.4 PPG).  Juniors Nolan Groves (13.4 PPG) and Brady Wooley (5.9 PPG) will be the top guys.  Groves can shoot it or take you off the bounce.  Wooley has a versatile face up forward game.  Riley Nelson and Mitchell Kauch are other options in the backcourt.  Logan Chappell will be another up front option.

St. Louis Park Orioles (2022-23 season 2-25, 0-14 Conference, 8th)
Former Oriole Arsenio Richardson takes over the program after a very long season.  He returns junior twins Micah (13.1 PPG) and Marley Curtis (10.4 PPG) on the wing.  They originally were looking to transfer to Hopkins.  Guards Javaris Ellis and Keegan Hartford also return to the lineup.

Waconia Wildcats (2022-23 season 13-15, 9-5 Conference, 3rd)
Waconia has their top 5 scorers coming back.  Soph PG Will Kirsch (14.6 PPG) leads 4 double figure scorers.  Lefty wings Gavin Olson (12.4 PPG) and Tate McDonald (6.1 PPG) return with him on the outside.  Chris Fulford (11.3 PPG) returns to man the interior.  Jackson Hayes (10.3 PPG) returns to play either spot.

Conference Overview
You have Benilde-St. Margaret's and Orono who played in the 6AAA section final last year.  Then you have Chanhassen who made a run to the 2AAAA final.  Plus a Waconia roster that returns a ton.  Not to mention Chaska, New Prague and St. Louis Park all are returning top guys.  So its a tough year to be in the league.  Benilde- St. Margaret's gets my vote as the defending champ with all their stars coming back.  Orono, Chanhassen and Waconia will be an absolute battle and any could end up winning the title too.  Orono always well coached.  Then there's Chanhassen (run) and Waconia (defend and execute) that are opposite styles but will win lots of games.  It may be another year of it looking like nobody wants to win the league with everybody getting beaten up by the schedule.  Chaska clearly stuck in the middle.  Then a big drop to the bottom 3 who will all struggle against this meat grinder of a schedule.  Need proof of tough schedules?  Look no further than the lists of games below for a bunch of games that will have major seeding impacts.

2023-24 Metro East Conference Preview

This is the 9th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  This preview is for the Metro East Conference.  For a list of all the season previews and an explanation of how the previews are generated, click here.

Hastings Raiders (2022-23 season 7-20, 5-11 Conference, tie 6th)
The Raiders return 8 of their top 9 scorers.  PG Owen Bernatz and his 16.3 PPG is the leader.  Kellen Nuytten (10.7 PPG) is the other double figure scorer returning.  He leads the front line.  Junior Lukas Foss will be in that forward rotation too.  Payton Lee-Dean, Parker McGinnis, Kyan Esterby, Weston Schult and soph Matthew Foss are the experienced perimeter rotation.

Hill-Murray Pioneers (2022-23 season 2-25, 0-16 Conference, 9th)
Cam Jones takes over the Pioneers program.  He'll build around junior forward Xavier Daniels.  The 2 year starter averaged 19.1 PPG last year.  No other returnee averaged more than 5.9 PPG.  That was senior wing Jake Kohler.  The next 3 returning scorers after Daniels were on the roster but not opening night starters last year.  So not much punch on the roster.  They do add junior guards Ben Myers (9.2 PG) and Thomas Myers from St. Croix Prep.

Mahtomedi Zephyrs (2022-23 season 25-4, 15-1 Conference, tie 1st)
Its a new era for coach Keith Newman.  12 seniors have graduated so the entire rotation needs to be replaced.  Star forward Owen Carlson (20.8 PPG) is off to Concordia-St. Paul.  PG Will Underwood (18.9 PPG) is now at Wake Forest.  Tyler Swanson will be a primary guard option.  Micah Schmidt looks to be the top front line option.  Charlie Thein, Sam Thein and Ben Carlson will be other rotation guys.

North Polars (2022-23 season 7-19, 6-10 Conference, 5th)
Anthony Harris is the new Polars head coach.  2 important pieces need to be replaced.  Leading scorer Tavian Berglund (12.4 PPG) has graduated.  Guard Jazayah Gates (8.1 PPG) is now at Tartan.  Brevin Conway (11.1 PPG) is the lone double figure scorer coming back. Starting wing Ryder Salinas (6.8 PPG) returns to the lineup as well.  Jayden McLaughlin (8.8 PPG) is another returnee.

St. Thomas Academy Cadets (2022-23 season 23-6, 15-1 Conference, tie 1st)
Khalid El-Amin has taken the Anoka-Ramsey head job.  Assistant Jacob Sand moves over to the big chair.  4 of the top 5 scorers have graduated.  That includes a guard group that had a ton of experience.  There is 1 guard left to build around and that's senior SG Luke Dobbs (16 PPG).  Junior Manny Smith (4.8 PPG) leads the front line.  Sean O'Brien will be another guard option.  Soph wing Lars Osteraas saw plenty of minutes last season and figures to have a much bigger role this season.

Simley Spartans (2022-23 season 7-19, 4-12 Conference, 8th)
Most of the short rotation needs to be replaced.  That includes 17.6 PPG from wing Zach Jacobson.  Guard Deoviez Gibson (14.1 PPG in 8 games) can be a go to guy for this group.  Justin Klint will also see time in the perimeter rotation. Frosh Tre Lovelace along with sophs Conner Streiff and Lyric Groth will factor into that list too.  Tapio Neimioja (4.4 PPG) will be the primary interior option.

South St. Paul Packers (2022-23 season 20-8, 11-5 Conference, tie 3rd)
The guard rotation will be strong with leading scorer Gavin Pendergast (14.2 PPG) and Elonzo Simmons (13.2 PPG) returning.  Soph Sincere McCampbell  (5.2 PPG) should see an increased perimeter role this season.  A couple of transfers should make up the interior rotation.  Senior Jordan Terhune comes in from Sartell.  Frosh Mustafa Mohamed saw time at Twin Cities Academy last season.  They'll replace America Fitch (7.6 PPG) in the big man spot. 

Tartan Titans (2022-23 season 17-10, 11-5 Conference, tie 3rd)
A down year by coach Klingsporn standards still means 17 wins and a 3rd place league finish after replacing basically everybody.  That means an up year this season with most of the team returning.  Senior forwards Elijah Barrett (13.6 PPG) and Brody Radtke (5.9 PPG) are 2 top threats up front.  Junior CJ Banks (12.2 PPG) leads the returning guard group.  8th grader Kevin Wilson gave them some good backup minutes last season too. Guard Jazayah Gates (8.1 PPG) transfers in from North St. Paul.

Two Rivers Warriors (2022-23 season 9-17, 5-11 Conference, tie 6th)
The Warriors need to replace all 3 double figure scorers from last season.  Center Davion Long's length inside will be missed as well.  No good answers to replace that.  Junior PG Ramzi Rislove (6.7 PPG) and soph wing Lamont Michaels (6.1 PPG) are the duo to build around.  Thomas Hesse (4.1 PPG), Tate Slowiak, Xavier Battle and junior Mason Boyken look to step into bigger roles.

Conference Overview
Tartan has a ton coming back and has to be the favorite.  South St. Paul's backcourt will keep them near the top.  St. Thomas Academy can give them a battle there as they also return good guard play.  Then the middle 3 is a toss up.  I like what Hastings has returning so I'll take them to make a leap.  Mahtomedi drops with a new roster.  Simley is the best of the rest and will battle in the middle.  Then a drop to the bottom 3.  Two Rivers and North will battle for the 7th spot.  Hill-Murray starts another round of rebuilding.

2023-24 Minneapolis City Conference Preview

This is the 8th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  In this preview, its a look at the Minneapolis City Conference.  For a list of all the season previews, click here.

Edison Tommies (2022-23 season 20-9, 7-5 Conference, 4th)
Forward Micah Young and his 20.1 PPG will be difficult to replace.  So too will wing Isiah Ayala (11.8 PPG) who is now at Minnesota Prep.  The Tommies do have 3 other notable returnees.  Guard Deidrick Taylor (14.8 PPG) will lead the way.  Legend Wright (8.6 PPG) and Jumarion Weh (6.8 PPG) also return to the rotation.  Juniors Francis Endrizzi and Sam Young look to step into rotation roles.

North Polars (2022-23 season 21-9, 11-1 Conference, 1st)
11 seniors need to replaced.  Wyoming football commit Zashon Rich is the lone double figure scorer. He's a versatile forward that can play inside and out with the added bonus of being left handed.  Jordan Hurd had a nice breakout season and returns in the middle.  Allen Jones and soph JMarion Sanders look to fill guard roles.  North's JV roster won the city last year so there's still plenty there to work with.

Patrick Henry Patriots (2022-23 season 8-17, 2-9 Conference, tie 5th)
Junior PG Eban Moua leads the returning roster.  Davonte White-Sledge also returns to the starting lineup.  Jeremie Niyonkuru and Wali Mosley are 2 experienced returnees.  The junior class looks to fill out the rotation.

Roosevelt Teddies (2022-23 season 4-22, 0-10 Conference, 7th)
Senior forward Avery Wells returned to Roosevelt at the end of last season.  He came back from Richfield and gives the Teddies a much needed offensive boost.  Junior wing Obie Esparza provides some shooting.  Senior Henry Murray also returns on the wing.  Teddies haven't won a league game since February 2019.

South Tigers (2022-23 season 6-20, 2-9 Conference, tie 5th)
Coach Joe Hyser has a couple of returning seniors to lead his Tigers squad.  Wing Poet Davis averaged 17.4 PPG last season.  Senior James Underwood  and his 7.3 PPG return at the point guard spot.  Forward Romero Walker is the top interior threat at 8 PPG.  Senior Maurice Hargrow returns to the rotation too.  Freshman guard Malachi Hill moves on to Totino-Grace after averaging 5.2 PPG last season.

Southwest Lakers (2022-23 season 19-8, 9-3 Conference, tie 2nd)
The Lakers have to replace a couple of double figure scorers.  Swiss army knife wing Caden Sullivan and his 13.4 PPG will be missed.  Southwest won't be short of scoring though.  Wings Liam Farniok (24 PPG) and Abe Anderson can knock down a bunch of 3s.  Farniok can go off in bunches.  Mason Dean (7.7 PPG) returns on the front line.  Guard Oliver Shors returns to the rotation as well.

Washburn Millers (2022-23 season 13-15, 9-3 Conference, tie 2nd)
Pound the rolling pin as the Millers look to make a run this year with a senior laden squad.  Colorado St commit Kyle Jorgensen (22.5 PPG) is one of the top bigs in the state.  He has quality footwork inside and an outside touch to boot.  Aedan Padgett joins him up front.  Blake Bergren and Charlie Gustafson return to starting perimeter spots.  Evan Young is a ball handling option in that group.  Cooper Carlson and Donnevan Okwor will join that group.

Predicted Order of Finish

Conference Overview
North is down from the previous high standard.  Washburn, Edison and Southwest all have plenty coming back.  Even South has a couple top returning pieces.  So I think its an up year for most of the league.  I take Washburn to reclaim the crown from North.  That should be decided on the final night of Washburn's league season on Valentine's Day.  Southwest is good enough to spoil it and try to over take the Polars as well.  Edison and South are clearly the best of the rest and will battle for the middle spot.  Henry is a level down.  Roosevelt looking to break their league losing streak.

2023-24 St. Paul City Conference Preview

This is the 7th preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  Now that the private schools are mostly covered, its on to public schools.  We start with the city leagues and St. Paul goes first.  For a list of all the season previews and how they are generated, click here.

Central Minutemen (2022-23 season 15-9, 9-3 Conference, 3rd)
Central needs to replace their strong frontline group of PJ Blakey (15.1 PPG) and Henry Acker (10 PPG). Junior guard Allan Lankfard (15.3 PPG) is one of the league's top offensive threats.  Soph wing Eli Moseman (11.2 PPG) is also a primary option.  Eliezer Henriquez-Lopez (5.4 PPG) is the other main rotation returnee.  Kaiden Theirs and Kurohn Davis will be options to step into a rotation role.

Como Park Cougars (2022-23 season 6-18, 4-8 Conference, 5th)
The Cougars return their top 4 scorers and most of the rotation from last season.  Senior forward Mason Aarness (17 PPG) will be their go to guy.  Junior Jahari Hill (9.8 PPG) joins him up front.  DeJuan Jones (12 PPG) leads the backcourt.  Lefty soph (7.7 PPG) Jonah Tetevi will be another perimeter option.  Sophs Kavaughn Lissimore and Contrell Jenkins along with senior Zaleen MacCallum are other rotation options.

Harding Knights (2022-23 season 12-12, 6-6 Conference, 4th)
Junior PG Ai'jhon Douglas (15.1 PPG) leads the Knights.  Junior wing Neyo Chea (7.8 PPG) will be another top outside option.  They'll have to replace Paul Walker (12.6 PPG) on the front line. 

Highland Park Scots (2022-23 season 15-8, 10-2 Conference, 2nd)
The Scots return 3 double-figure scorers from last season.  Forward Xavier May (15.6 PPG) leads the way inside.  Guards Yared Yohannes (14.1 PPG) and Andrew Bacigalupi (10 PPG) provide the perimeter offense.  Forward Charles Duncan returns to the starting lineup as well.  Melvin Menah and Evan Jones return to the rotation too.

Humboldt Hawks (2022-23 season 7-21, 2-10 Conference, 6th)
Guard Albert Wellington (13.5 PPG) leads the offense.  Endale Witt is another experienced guard option.  Lots of youth as 4 8th graders saw time last year.  Forward Taurean Williams leads that group.  He might be the biggest guy on the roster at 6'1".  That goes with a bunch of tiny guards.

Johnson Governors (2022-23 season 17-9, 11-1 Conference, 1st)
The Govs have to replace a quality perimeter trio of DeWayne Givens, Kajon Jordan and Jay Tinsley.  All averaged double figures last year.  But they have plenty ready to step in to those roles.  Senior Dhimani Tucker should move up to double figures after a 8.8 PPG season.  Jalani Mayes also returns on a wing.  Frosh Colin Moore with sophs Michael Jett and Guarino Kemp should see plenty of time as well.  Soph forward Kenny Turner (12.4 PPG) was the top option last season.  They also get Daejohn Thomas back on the front line after he spent last year at East Ridge.

Washington Eagles (2022-23 season 9-19, 0-12 Conference, 7th)
2 top options for the Eagles are gone with the graduation of Chris Birdsong and Tyquan Allen.  Both of those guards averaged over 15 PPG last year.  Senior guard Jonathan Santiago (11.1 PPG) will be the main offensive option.  Outside of him, there's not much offensive firepower.

Conference Overview:
Johnson loses some very valuable pieces but I won't bet against the defending champs this season.  Too much on the front line especially with Daejohn Thomas coming back.  Highland Park will give them a run.  Central is still going to be a factor in the race with Allan Lankfard and Eli Moseman but I still see them 3rd in this group.  After that it drops off to Harding and Como Park for the middle spot.  Humboldt is still awfully young.  Washington remains in a rebuilding state.

Academy of Holy Angels Stars (2022-23 season 7-19, 4-12 Conference, Tie 7th)
Troy Bell returns to his alma mater as the new head coach.  He has to replace an entire front line of starters that all averaged double figures.  That's over 45 PPG lost from the top of the lineup.  Senior guards Jamison Rowe (8.6 PPG) and John Kenney return to the lineup.  Junior Damian Devine (8.7 PPG) should be the new top interior option.  Junior Nathan Ritz and soph Dalton DeBoer are other post options.  Senior Adam Akerson (4.2 PPG) returns on the wing.

Bloomington Kennedy Eagles (2022-23 season 10-17, 5-11 Conference, 6th)
Kennedy has major holes to fill with 8 seniors departing.  They should be strong on the wing with Lamarrius Starr (9.1 PPG) and soph Delannie Bush (7.2 PPG) coming back.  Junior guard Markus Williams also returns to the rotation.  Sonte Lajeunesse-Wood will see frontcourt minutes.  After him there's very limited big man options.

Brooklyn Center Centaurs (2022-23 season 7-19, 4-12 Conference, tie 7th)
Coach Andre Gilbert needs to replace 3 double figure scorers.  That includes one of the state's top scorers in guard Quayvant Douglas and his 31.3 PPG.  Center Steven Nzimi (7.4 PPG) is the top returning scorer.  DeShaun Pongsak (6.6 PPG) also returns to the lineup.  Abriel Foster returns on a wing.  Limited backcourt experience and where will they find their points are the big question marks.

Columbia Heights Hylanders (2022-23 season 13-14, 8-7 Conference, 4th)
Coach Willie Braziel went young last year.  That results in him returning 5 of his top 6 scorers.  That would be all 6 except for star frosh Jaeden Udean (13.4 PPG) who transferred to league rival De La Salle.  PG Jency Davis (17 PPG) will run the show again.  Randy McClendon (18 PPG) is their wing scorer.  Cam Smith (12.1 PPG) and Boona Morke (9.2 PPG) return on the front line.  The Hylanders also add Zy'lerre Stewart (5.9 PPG) who was an important guard for Totino-Grace last season.

De La Salle Islanders (2022-23 season 26-6, 16-0 Conference, 1st, State AAA runner-up)
The 3 top scorers including star PG Nasir Whitlock (26.7 PPG) have departed.  The wing spot will be well stocked with Minnesota-Duluth commit Jaden Morgan (7.4PPG) and Columbia Heights transfer Jaeden Udean (13.4 PPG).  Morgan is coming off an outstanding summer on the grassroots circuit.  Junior De'Von Irvin returns at the point.  Ray James and Justin Johnson are other perimeter rotation guys.  Johnson gives them another option to knock down shots.  Juniors Marcus Anderson, Dorian Pruitt and Andrew Apiagyei will look to jump into the rotation as well.  Size is a question mark.

Fridley Tigers (2022-23 season 7-18, 2-13 Conference, 9th)
Senior PG Antwan Smith (8.9 PPG) returns to lead the roster.  Fellow senior Bryson Buggs (6.2 PPG) joins him in the backcourt.  Jordan Foster is the only other returnee with significant rotation time.  Soph Brevon Robinson should see added minutes this season.

Richfield Spartans (2022-23 season 11-17, 8-8 Conference, 5th)
The Spartans return the high scoring wing duo of junior CJ Armstrong (23 PPG) and senior Zavier Hayes (12.3 PPG).  David Lee (8.3 PPG) also returns to the rotation.  Senior Musa Sanneh and soph Adin Inda provide depth.  Not a ton of size but they will be quick and able to score.

Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks (2022-23 season 18-7, 13-3 Conference, 2nd)
Coach Bo Powell has to replace 3 double figure scorers. That includes breakout forward Michael Cooper (21.6 PPG) and lead guard Sam Massaquoi (17.6 PPG).   Chance Wicks and Jamin Cook lead the returnees as experienced guards.  Both should be double figure scorers this season.  Soph Abel Nason also returns to the rotation along with junior Tarik Jackson.

St. Anthony Huskies (2022-23 season 16-11, 11-5 Conference, 3rd)
The Huskies made a jump of 8 league wins in coach Josh Pratt's inaugural season.  His backcourt of Caydin Hauser (14 PPG) and Nathan Lucas (17.1 PPG) has graduated.  Joe Randle also needs to be replaced on the front line.  Wing Kenji Asai and his 10.2 PPG lead the returning dog team.  Guard Alexander Igherighe (6.9 PPG) is another scoring option from last year's rotation.  Junior guard Braden Siroin will look to step into the Nathan Lucas role to knock down shots.

Conference Overview:
De La Salle is the class of the league until beaten so they get the top vote.  Columbia Heights even without Jaeden Udean is a clear second but they can give the Islanders a run.  Richfield is talented enough to play spoiler here with their talented duo of Armstrong and Hayes.  Cooper and St. Anthony will battle for the middle spots.  Then Troy Bell starts retooling at Holy Angels.  The bottom 3 is another step down as I see all of those struggling.

2023-24 Wright County East Preview

This is the 5th preview in my 2023-24 season preview series.  Lets stay in the west metro and add in a look at the Wright County East.  For a list of all the season previews and how they are done, click here.

Delano Tigers (2022-23 season 20-8, 7-3 Conference, 2nd)
Coach Terry Techam returns a ton of perimeter firepower to his lineup.  He returns 3 double figure scorers in senior guard Will Strandemo (19.3 PPG), soph Max Iverson (17.6 PPG) and junior shooter Jake Schultz (13.1 PPG).  Inside they need to replace the 10.5 PPG from Jackson Stewart.  They'll be able to score with anybody.  Their defense will determine their fate.

Holy Family Fire (2022-23 season 29-3, 10-0 Conference, 1st)
The Fire lose 3 of their 4 double figure scorers from last year's state qualifier.  That includes 2 D1 big men in Boden Kapke (22.2 PPG) and Collin Mulholland (15.7 PPG).  They add guard Luke Graff (14 PPG) from Champlin Park and center Brayden Carlson from East Ridge.  Kole Hanson (21.3 PPG) returns to run the team.  Senior guard Evan Finley Grice is the only other returnee from last year's short rotation.  Expect this year's squad to be much more perimeter oriented and depth to still be a concern.

Hutchinson Tigers (2022-23 season 7-19, 2-8 Conference, tie 5th)
Hutchinson returns everybody from last year's roster.  Seniors Kaden Butler (13.2 PPG) and Carter Verhasselt (12 PPG) lead the way at the guard spots.  Senior Logan Butler (10.9 PPG) leads the interior crew.  Junior Nathan Johnson (9 PPG) is a nice talent on the wing.  Seniors Ethan Lenz and Anton Kadlec provide depth.

Jordan Hubmen (2022-23 season 13-13, 6-4 Conference, 3rd)
Senior guard Seth Young (12 PPG) is the lone returning starter.  Seniors Seth Noyes and Jack Olson are other options at the guard spots.  The rest of the rotation will be inexperienced.  Particularly true on the front line where they'll miss the 10 PPG from Carter Runge.

Mound-Westonka Whitehawks (2022-23 season 6-21, 2-8 Conference, tie 5th)
Wing Reese Vanderwilt (14.4 PPG) and guard Luke Leonard are 2 notable pieces that need to be replaced for the Whitehawks.  They'll build around junior forward Max Kraay (15.6 PPG) inside.  Junior PG Carter Reinbold (11.9 PPG) makes up for a lack of size with toughness.  Love that in a point guard. 

Southwest Christian Stars (2022-23 season 8-19, 3-7 Conference, 4th)
David Flom takes over the Stars program after his controversial exit from Eden Prairie.  He adds longtime Chaska head coach Dana Kallman to his staff.  Wing Sam Arnold (12.9 PPG) is the main loss from the roster.  7 of the top 8 scorers return.  Junior wing Brayden Beckering (15.2 PPG) and forward Gordie Molin (11.1) are the top returnees.  Mason Wood (6 PPG) transfers in from Shakopee.

Conference Overview
The conference remains a tough test night in and night out.  Delano and Holy Family are looking to make state tourney appearances.  Their 2 matchups should be fun chess matches with really entertaining guard play.  Southwest Christian and Hutchinson have lots coming back and could be spoilers.  I expect coach Flom to make a big step with the Stars.  They get the nod for 3rd thanks to 2 head to head wins over Hutchinson last season.  Mound-Westonka will try to jump into that group but they may be a year away.  Jordan is left behind as they replace their lineup.

2023-24 IMAC Preview

This is the fourth preview in my 2023-2024 season preview series.  Week 1 moves along with this look at the Independent Metro Athletic Conference (IMAC).  For a list of all the season previews and how they are done, click here.

Blake Bears (2022-23 season 15-11, 6-4 Conference, 3rd)
Coach Tyler Biwan returns his top 6 scorers from last season.  Senior guard Grayson Okonronkwo (21 PPG) is the catalyst.  He's flanked by juniors Drew Dillon and Kris Baker (7.8 PPG) along with soph Carson McMichael (13.2 PPG) on the perimeter.  Juniors Omar Kaba (10.1 PPG) and Ian Schnabel (6.8 PPG) hold down the inside.

Breck Mustangs (2022-23 season 19-9, 7-3 Conference, 2nd)
Wings Waziri Lawal (12.3 PPG) and Will Walker (7.6 PPG) need to be replaced.  But coach Harry Sonie still has a loaded roster.  They also add Daniel Freitag from Bloomington Jefferson to increase the talent level even more.  Leading scorer Hanif Muhammed (16.3 PPG) is back at a guard spot as another ball handler.  Soph JP Musoke (7.8 PPG) and senior Kevin Armstrong (9.5 PPG) return on the wings along with junior Miles Newton (9.1 PPG).  Junior Teddy Koch returns as a shooter.  Junior Carter Steinbeck gives them length inside.

Minnehaha Academy Redhawks (2022-23 season 23-9, 8-0 Conference, 1st, state AA runner-up)
Minnehaha loses center Rolyns Aligbe (15.3 PPG) to graduation.  They also lose their leading scorer and distributor Jerome Williams (20.3 PPG) and wing Harrison Aligbe (6.3 PPG) to prep school.  Senior guard Lorenzo Levy (16.3 PPG) should fit nicely into Williams touches and could put up 25 PPG this year.  Senior lefty Mateo Cortez Weiss is a wing shooter along with TJ Cusciotta.  Then there's a group of juniors who played well together this summer that can step in.  That includes guards Fitta Jafar and Quincy Starling along forwards Kingston Manning and George Norsman.

Mounds Park Academy Panthers (2022-23 season 9-18, 0-8 Conference, 6th)
Junior forward Wyatt Srsen (20.2 PPG) and senior guard Micah Hudock (16.3 PPG) are the returning 1-2 punch for the Panthers.  Senior Jay Green (7.4 PPG) returns to run the point.  There's been improvement in the program but the rebuild continues.

Providence Academy Lions (2022-23 season 6-20, 3-6 Conference, tie 4th)
The Lions have to replace their 2 double-figure scorers from a year ago.  Forwards Alvin Mokua (15.6 PPG) and Dylan Perrill (14.9 PPG) were most of the scoring punch.  Wings Henry Jacobson and George Jacobson will be 2 of the top scoring threats.  Patrick Newman should be a primary guard option.  Junior Matt Hunter looks to develop in an interior role.

St. Paul Academy Spartans (2022-23 season 18-10, 3-6 Conference, tie 4th)
Coach Kevin Keto lost 4 starters last season and the Spartans still won an impressive 18 games.  Now the top 5 scorers and 4 starters return.  Senior Mikkel Rawdon (18.2 PPG) holds down the inside.  Seniors Ethan Carter (18.7 PPG) and Tysen Hayes (15.2 PPG) are versatile do everything types on the perimeter.  Hayes is a big wing type who can be a mismatch problem playing inside or outside.

Conference Overview
Minnehaha shared the league title in a 3 way tie in the 1st year of the IMAC.  Then they've run the table in league ever since.  As the IMAC celebrates its 10th season, is this the season where the streak (currently 49 games) comes to an end?  I say yes to that.  The Redhawks are still going to be very good, but Breck is absolutely stacked.  If the Mustangs put it all together, that's a state championship level team.  How Daniel Freitag adjusts to not needing the ball all the time will be something to watch.  Blake and SPA both return a ton and can play spoiler here as teams that could push for 20 wins.  Blake gets the nod here via 2 close head to head wins over the Spartans last season.  Providence and Mounds Park are rebuilding.

2023-24 Skyline Conference Preview

Concordia Academy Beacons (2022-23 season 19-10, 11-4 Conference, 3rd)
The best dressed coach in the metro has to replace all 3 double figure scorers from last season.  Do everything guard AJ Greene and his 23.3 PPG is the biggest loss.  Wings Ben Raymond (15.6 PPG) and Luc Swanson (12.3 PPG) will be missed for their shooting.  Junior Noah Quiggle (6.1 PPG) should step right in for Josh Ortiz inside.  Luke Olson (8.1 PPG) is the top returning scorer and guard.  Kellen Quast should also see an increased backcourt role.

Cristo Rey Jesuit Pumas (2022-23 season 6-21, 2-13 Conference, 8th)
The Pumas have been a hard team to figure out the last 2 seasons.  They're more talented than the record shows.  Last season they were 1-6 in league games decided by 4 points or less.  The entire rotation returns and that includes 3 double figure scorers.  Patrick Akoussan leads the team at 18 PPG.  Guards Corey Dotson (13.1 PPG) and Miles Nelson (11 PPG) lead the backcourt.  All 3 are experienced seniors.  Junior Omar Whittaker (7.9 PPG) also returns to the starting lineup.

Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs (2022-23 season 25-4, 15-0 Conference, 1st)
Last year's JV coach Matt Shepard takes over with the departure of Ervin Bryant after 1 season.  A large chunk of the rotation needs to be replaced.  Wing Bailey McDonald (14.1 PPG) was the leading scorer last season. Nick Anderson (9.7 PPG) was the top interior option and there's very few other options in the program.  Both have graduated.  The backcourt will still be a strength though undersized with Datrell McCrimmon (11.8 PPG) and Greyson Rennie (11.4 PPG) coming back.  Drew Balentine (9.1 PPG) returns on the wing.

New Life Academy Eagles (2022-23 season 26-6, 12-3 Conference, 2nd, state class A runner-up)
Head coach Robbie Whitney moved on to a grad assistant position at Augustana.  Assistant Charlie Hoaglund takes over the program.  Most of the rotation needs to be replaced from last year's state class A runner up.  That includes Minnesota walk-on Erick Reader (14.7 PPG) and PG Max Briggs (13.4 PPG).  They'll be strong on the wing.  Seniors Colter Stone (10.7 PPG) and John Kirschling (8.6 PPG) both saw major minutes last year.  Senior Parker Moseman will step into the rotation there as well. Junior Noah Hahn and soph Dylan Wall look to move up from JV roles.

Nova Classical Academy Knights (2022-23 season 6-21, 0-8 Conference, 9th)
The Knights return their entire roster from last season.  With only 4 seniors, it will still be a relatively young roster.  Junior guard Mason Engelking led the team in scoring at 15.4 PPG.  Soph wing Caleb Taylor put up almost 10 PPG.  Center Silas Revenaugh returns in the middle at 8.8 PPG.  He's battled injuries the last 2 seasons.  Seniors Miles Aamodt and Alex Ehlebracht return to the starting lineup as well.

St. Agnes Aggies (2022-23 season 16-12, 8-7 Conference, 4th)
St. Agnes needs to replace 3 seniors including 12.4 PPG from wing Paul Plasch.  Junior forward Nolan Davis (12.9 PPG) and senior guard Andrew Weber (15.1 PPG) return to lead the offense.  Senior guard Cegan Flood (9.4 PPG) also returns to the perimeter rotation.  Senior Joe Skidmore returns on a wing.

St. Croix Lutheran Crusaders (2022-23 season 12-15, 6-9 Conference, 6th)
The Crusaders need to replace 4 of their top 5 scorers.  A major loss is point guard Jaiden Neish (14.2 PPG).  He is off to prep school.  Senior guard Elias Blumer (9.3 PPG) is the only returnee who averaged more than 4.5 PPG.  Juniors Mateo Garcia, Robert Carlson and Ole Skiren will need to evolve into their increased roles.

St. Croix Prep Lions (2022-23 season 11-17, 7-8 Conference, 5th)
Coach Keven Seim loses 3 members of his rotation.  The main loss is Christian Nelson (10.5 PPG) who was their only double figure scorer last season.  2nd leading scorer Ben Myers (9.2 PPG) and his brother Thomas are now at Hill-Murray.  Junior guard Chase Hanson (7.9 PPG) is the top returnee.  Brady Harbinson (7.1 PPG) is the other guard in that group.  Senior Brady Nelson (5.7 PPG) returns to start in the middle.  Seniors Patrick Brown (7.7 PPG) and Elliot Gremmels will also see major perimeter minutes.  Junior William Weeldreyer will be the other interior option.

Trinity Tri-Hawks (2022-23 season 8-20, 3-12 Conference, 7th)
Trinity went very young last year with 5 sophomores.  This year they return all but 1 player.  Senior Justin Groppel (13 PPG) is one of 3 double figure scorers coming back.  He's the main interior threat.  Junior guards Nathan Adbebe (12 PPG) and Isaac Rudquist (10.6 PPG) are the top outside options.  Not much scoring punch from the rest of the roster though.

Conference Overview
The Skyline goes back to standard round-robin scheduling this season after having a year or 2 of Nova only going around the league once.  Expect a down year in the league as you have heavy losses for all of last year's top teams.  Its really hard to pick a top team here but Maranatha has quality guard play and tradition.  But they have a new coach.  St. Agnes has their top 2 guys coming back plus another couple guys coming back to give them a battle.  Then group 2 all has its questions.  New Life has a new coach and mostly new rotation guys.  The best dressed coach in the metro loses his top 3 but keeps them in the top half.  Cristo Rey with athletes and a ton back should be no worse than the middle spot and with a down year in the league, is this the year they make a run?  The bottom 4 all play slow and have major concerns about how they'll generate their offense.  St. Croix Lutheran and Trinity with their pack line defenses will get the benefit of the shot clock being in place.
