A Weekend of Red

No we're not talking about the big Wisconsin win over Michigan State in hoops.  Its a fun set of 3 games in 24 hours as the month of February is upon us.  I start with the 2nd round of Metro East play and a fun directional St. Paul matchup as North St. Paul visits South St. Paul.  Then closing out my AAAA list seeing the red of Rochester John Marshall at Osseo in a Saturday matinee.  It ends with a big clash on the island with #1AAAA Eden Prairie coming into #3AAA De La Salle.  Here are the sights and sounds.

Friday: North St. Paul 72 South St. Paul 59
Real sugar Pepsi to go with my meal deal.  If South St. Paul can duplicate their 5-3 1st rotation thru the metro east schedule, they'll give the program its most wins in a season since the 1970 state runner up team.  The last winning season for the program was 1999.  North St. Paul won the 1st meeting by 14.  South St. Paul would open up a 28-17 1st half lead.  Good all around play from frosh Max Wilson during that stretch.  North St. Paul's offense would finally kick in with a 14-3 run finished by 2 Shaheed Muhammad buckets.  Soph Kenny Daily with a nice lefty finish and a 3 point play in the run as well.  Wilson adds the final 2 FTs of the half.  33-31 South St. Paul at the break.

Muhammad very quiet in the 1st half until the end keeps it going with a 3 point play, a FT and a triple in the 1st 5 minutes.  44-40 NSP takes the lead.  Its a 2 point game when SSP star PG Alonzo Dodd sits with his 4th foul at the 11:07 mark.  Muhammad 2 FTs for a 51-49 NSP lead and Dodd is back in with 8:22 left.  Roll those dice coach McCollister.  Soph PF Anthony Faulk with a second BLOB bucket as SSP is within 55-53 with 6:11 left.  But NSP slams the door with a 13-1 run over the next 3:40.  Daily with a 3 point play, 4 NSP FTs and 2 driving buckets to end the run.  Shaheed Muhammad with 11 of his 16 in the 2nd half.  Kenny Daily also with 16 for NSP.  Soph PG Alonzo Dodd leads SSP with 10 of his 16 in the 1st half.  He shot 9-16 at the charity stripe.  Frosh Max Wilson adds 14 points for the Packers.

Saturday matinee: Osseo 60 Rochester John Marshall 45
Both lineups with major holes in them.  JM Center Lincoln Meister just committed to UMD.  He's out with meniscus surgery last week.  Osseo with 4 members of their star studded sophomore class out of the lineup.  They've had a different lineup every night it seems so the revolving door continues.  The Osseo D sets the tone right away as they hold JM without a FG for the 1st 7:35 of the game.   But Osseo wasn't an offensive juggernaut to begin with and they didn't blow the game open.  Its a 6 point game before JM goes on an 11-0 run starting at the 8 minute mark and going for just 1:40.  3 players with 3s in that run.  17-12 JM at 6:20.  Osseo comes back with a 9-0 run starting with the 2nd 3 from Hassan Kamara.  That helps Osseo to a 25-22 halftime lead.

Jacob Daing with a quick 3rd foul for JM and he sits.  He comes back after a 9-1 Osseo run and picks up a charge for his 4th with 12:56 left.  Osseo missing a bunch of FTs early in the half otherwise the run would have been more.  Ty Tuckner working inside for JM.  His 3 point play with 11:20 left keeps the Osseo lead at just 6.  JV wing Aballa Bagutti off the bench for JM and hits a 3 and the lead is down to 5.  Osseo misses 2 more freebies but Daing commits his 5th on 2nd miss with 9:32 left.  Osseo then hits 4 free throws as they stretch the lead to 11. PG Benard Omooria leads Osseo down the stretch.  He hits an open 3, a free throw and a layup as Osseo puts the game out of reach.  Benard Omooria leads Osseo with 13 points.  Fellow sophs Tyriece Waits and Hassan Kamara each add 12 points for the Orioles.  Will Woodford leads the Rockets with 16 points.  Ty Tuckner adds 11 for JM.

Saturday Night: #1AAAA Eden Prairie 61 #3AAA De La Salle 42
Excellent walking taco on the menu.  Long time no have, YUM!  This was really fun to watch for the discipline showed on both ends by both teams.  Plus another great defensive game plan from Eden Prairie.  They made a point of keeping length in either Connor Christensen or John Henry on Cade Haskins.  Plus they backed off most of the rest of the perimeter roster for DLS.  The talk on defense and execution of switches both during a screen and switch back to matchups off the ball when they had a chance was high level stuff that you just don't see in high school.  Great execution of the plan and attention to detail.

As to the game, Haskins answers a pair of Henry triples to keep DLS within 13-10 at the 12 minute mark.  Then a 10-0 EP run bookended by Christensen buckets.  DLS does make the game plan pay with Semaj Hart and Evan Boyd hitting 3s late in the half.  34-26 EP at the half.  Drake Dobbs for 3 off a quality set.  Then Henry with back to back 3s including another great set for the 2nd one.  Henry ends the 13-0 run with yet another bomb as he gets loose in transition.  50-30 EP with 8:43 left and this one is over.  John Henry leads Henry with 7 triples and 23 points.  Drake Dobbs with 3 triples and 15 points of his own.  The defense holds Cade Haskins to 11 points, 8 in the 1st half and a late 3.  Jalen Travis also scores 11 for the Islanders.  Keijuan White adds 8 of his 10 in the 1st half with a couple of open 3s.

De La Salle was patient on offense looking for good shots and ran good screening combinations.  Haskins was using physical screens from guys like Travis all night.  The defense switching and lower shouldering those screens to get thru was just too good from EP.  Including this game, 7 of the last 9 for EP are on the road.  That includes the monster road game at Minnehaha on Tuesday, Feb 18th.  This game starts a 5 game home stretch for De La Salle.  They have 4 league home games and the next road game is in 2 weeks at #3AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall.

The Battles of Midway

We resume our St. Paul programming this week with a split doubleheader.  A chance to cross the final 2 teams left to see off the EMAC list with Groves visiting Hmong Academy in an early 4:25 start.  Then down the road we go for a St. Paul City showdown between Central and Highland Park.  Both teams coming in 1 game behind Johnson for the top spot in the league.

Game 1: Hmong Academy 79 Groves Academy 59
Alfie Galle 3 inside hoops early for Groves against the small Hmong Academy lineup.  Then the Warriors get their shooting going.  Calvin Yang bangs home 5 triples.  Elijah Vang with 2 triples of his own and converts a turnover.  Groves goes 8 minutes without a FG as Hmong Academy goes on a 27-4 run.  Elijah Vang adds 4 free throws as the Warriors stretch the lead to 43-28 at the half.  A couple of Groves triples early in the 2nd half cut the lead to 11.  Elijah Vang spins for 2 and Calvin Yang hits yet another 3.  No more danger from there as the Warriors coast to the win after that.  Junior guard Calvin Yang makes 6 3s and finishes with 26 points.  Elijah Vang adds 3 triples and 23 points for Hmong Academy.  Post Alfie Galle leads Groves with 29 points.  Daniel Schoenfelder chips in with 13.  Too many turnovers for Groves.  Hmong Academy's 1st half shooting vs the 2-3 zone was critical too.  Groves won the 1st meeting by 9 between the teams.  Both teams are now 2-10 in the EMAC and tied for 8th.  They are 2 games out of the last spot held by AFSA.

Game 2: St. Paul Central 49 St. Paul Highland Park 46
Good size student sections on hand for this one.  Nico Peterson 3 early blocks to set the tone of a defensive struggle.  He also contributes on offense with a free throw and a post up that results in a dunk.  Offense hard to come by as its 9-8 Highland Park at the 9:35 mark.  Jalen Cardenas off the Central bench with a putback and converts a turnover into a layup.  Kaden Doram scores inside and adds a 3 point play as Central opens up a 22-11 lead.  Peterson scores the last 4 of the half to keep the Scots within 24-17 at the break.  He had 4 1st half field goals, the rest of the Highland Park roster had 3.

Central threatens to run away with this one early in the 2nd half.  Gavin Gothard with a steal for a 3 point play.  Cardenas 2 layups, Highland misses 4 of 5 FTs and Gothard with a floater.  Donnie Preston with a nice cut for a layup out of 5 out offense.  Its a 14-3 Minutemen run and Central pushes the lead to 40-22 with 9 minutes left.  Then Paul Revere yelled THE SCOTS ARE COMING, THE SCOTS ARE COMING.  Peterson with 2 FTs off a SLOB. Then he'll get a strip out top and he goes the other way for the poster dunk on somebody's poor head and the foul.  2 more Central turnovers for 2 more Scots layups.  Peterson a putback for a 3 point play.  Joey Kottke knocks down a kickout 3 and scores another hoop.  Central turns it over again and Highland Park has the ball back down 2 with 4 minutes left.  But they take a bad 3 to not convert that possession.  Timeout Central with the ball up 2 and 3:14 left.

They come out of the timeout with THE WORLD'S WORST OFFENSE.  That lasts the 1st half of the 90 second possession before we're back to 5 out.  The end result is a Central turnover with 1:45 left.  But Highland Park gives the ball right back with an illegal screen.  Central makes bonus free throws but Kottke counters with a 3 to cut it to 1 with 1 minute left. Central holds and then misses 2 FTs with 22.8 left.  Highland Park takes their last timeout with 17.6 left but can't convert.  Central makes 1 free throw with 7.6 left.  Last chance for Highland Park down 2 without a timeout. They'll push and their attempt is no good, mad scramble and as we have a putback attempt off goes the horn.  Couldn't hear that or the whistle.  Its a shooting foul against Central and we'll put 1 second up on the clock.  1st free throw is no good.  Second is missed intentionally but its a lane violation.  Central makes 1 FT with 0.6 left for the final margin.  Highland Park now 5-12 overall, 3-2 in the St. Paul City.  Central now 7-8 overall, 5-1 in the St. Paul City.  Central visits Johnson next Tuesday night for what is likely the chance to split the conference crown.  But due to the Rose Bowl rule, Johnson would host the Twin Cities Game if there's a tie with Central.  Johnson won the 1st meeting at Central by 6 earlier this month.

And Then There Were Three

(microphone emoji) I will, follow you will you, follow me.  All the, days and nights that we, know will be (/microphone emoji).  The title is such a fantastic Genesis album with that hit Follow You Follow Me.  Its a race to see all 62 teams in class AAAA this season.  So that drives most of this week's schedule as I cross 2 more off the list on back to back nights.  That gets me down to 3 AAAA teams left to see.  Tuesday was a trip to Tartan for a 2nd place Metro East showdown with Hastings.  Then a Wednesday trip to see the snow makeup game in the NW Suburban between Elk River and Spring Lake Park.  Hot dogs in each location.  No fruit punch sports drink so that means a treat of A&W and Pepsi for beverages.

Tuesday: Tartan 65 Hastings 56
The winner of this one would stay 1 game behind North St. Paul for the top spot in the Metro East.  Tartan's hot shooting threatens to blow the game open early.  Dorian Singer 2 bombs.  Broderick Binns and Joe Kearney from deep.  Soph wing Marko Vuckomanovich off the bench with 2 treys as well.  Those 6 makes allow Tartan to open up a 25-13 lead at the 5:52 mark.  Hastings claws their way back with their own shooting.  Devon Haraldson for 3 and a scoop for 2.  Then a couple more Hastings triples to close the gap to 32-27 at the half.

Kearney with another triple with 16:40 left to push the lead to 7.  But that's the last Tartan triple of the night.  The rest of the night is a defensive, foul shooting slug fest.  Izzy Arnold up and under for 2 plus another Haraldson 3 in an 8-2 Raiders run.  37-36 Tartan with 13:40 left.  Tartan's defense then holds Hastings without a FG for more than 11 minutes.  Tartan takes advantage 18-7 during that 11+ minutes to go up by 12.  Haraldson finally breaks the run with a 3 with 2:30 left.  He scores 10 points in that last 2:30 but the margin is too big.  That's half of his 20 points for the game.  That leads all scorers.  Langston Binns only 3 FG but 9 FTs for 17 points.  Dorian Singer with 14.  Joe Kearney adds 3 triples and 11 points.  Hastings rebounded nicely from this loss with a quick turnaround home win over South St. Paul.

Wednesday: #6AAAA Spring Lake Park 91 Elk River 49
Elk River with a huge roster of 6'8" and 6'9" varsity starters plus 7 foot and 6'8" on the JV.  Note to self: I need some of whatever is in the water.  Story of this one was Elk River turnovers and too much SLP firepower.  Spring Lake Park uses a 10-0 run with a Gabe Myren steal for a dunk and then another steal for an assist on a Jacob Say layup.  During the run Myren sits with 2 fouls.  Elk River gets 6 in a row to cut the margin to 36-23 which gets a coach Guzy timeout.  Myren returns out of that timeout after a 4 minute break and he dunks 2 more turnovers.  The rout is on from there.  Full 9 minutes of running time in this one after SLP leads by 25 at halftime.  Spring Lake Park has 4 starters reach double figures.  Gabe Myren 18, Blake Remme 17, Jacob Say and Kaleb Skelly 14 each.  Skelly with 12 of his 14 in the 1st half when the Panthers had Myren and Remme with 2 fouls.  Alex Eng with 10 to lead Elk River.

No triple digits no problem

Prologue
To St. Paul Washington for a rematch with St. Paul Harding.  These teams put up a 109-106 game at the Trinity holiday tournament.  Simeon Sharp going for 58 for Harding in that game.  Sharp doesn't play the 1st half tonight, but we still get moments of that same frenetic pace.  Hot dog and Gatorade on the menu.  That and the history in the banners on the wall both worth chewing on.

Game Time:
Harding taking it to Washington inside early.  Between that and 3 illegal screens, all 3 bigs for Washington are quickly in foul trouble.  Alex Addai and Sam Gray doing the damage inside for the Knights.  They combine for 9 inside points in a 15-2 run.  21-6 Harding at 7:30 after they tip a miss in.  Addai sitting with 2 fouls and Drew White gets it going for Washington.  White 2 and the foul, off the ball screen for 3 and let's add 3 more.  He'll add bonus free throws and then 2 more free throws.  The Washington run is 17-1 and the Eagles take a 23-22 lead.  Zaveon Smith scores the last 6 Washington points of the half.  Eagles take a 30-27 lead to the locker room.

Second half is back and forth with Simeon Sharp entering the lineup. DeCarian Atkins productive for Harding from his guard spot early in the half.  He goes triple, 2 FTs and a drive. Its a 10-1 Harding run for a 37-34 Knights lead with 15 minutes left.  Sharp with a 3, 1-3 FTs and a coast to coast foray.  Andreas Green with a couple of 3s to counter that.  47-46 Washington with 10 minutes left.

Atkins 2 more basket attacks. White responds with a 3 and a bucket.  Sharp with bonus FTs and a bucket plus bonus FTs around a Smith triple.  59 all with 3:25 left.  White free throw followed by a Smith steal and assist.  Sharp counters with a hoop.  White and Sharp trade a free throw.  63-62 Washington with 1:26 left.  Smith to the rack to stretch the lead to 3.  Harding 3 misses but Washington turns it over twice.  So Harding has a BLOB with 30 seconds left but Smith steals and makes 1 out of 2 FTs to seal it.  Washington wins 66-62.

Post Game:
Harding falls to 4-11 overall, 2-3 in the St. Paul City.  Simeon Sharp sits the 1st half and scores 15 in the 2nd half.  Jitterbug guard DeCarien Atkins 12 of his 15 in the 2nd half.  The size dominated the 1st 10 minutes but did very little after that.  A quick turnaround for the Knights at Highland Park tomorrow.  They host South on Thursday and visit section foe Richfield Saturday afternoon.

Drew White with 5 triples and 27 points on the night to lead Washington.  15 of those points in the second half.  Zaveon Smith with 12 of his 22 in the final half.  Andreas Green with a cold night shooting making just a couple of 3s.  But the 2 he made were critical to keeping Harding from opening up a lead.  Washington improves to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the St. Paul City.  They too have a quick turnaround with league leader Johnson coming in tomorrow.  Then a trip to Humboldt on Friday.

2020 Hall of Fame Classic Review

The Minnesota High School Basketball Hall of Fame put on their 1st annual Winter Classic at Anoka-Ramsey.  Thanks to the weather it was delayed a week and we lost the HS girls games.  Three boys games remained on the schedule following a Men's and Women's college doubleheader.  The St Cloud Tech College women almost pulled an upset on the ranked ARCC women.  In the men's game, ARCC gave Tech a tough battle in the 1st half.  But 5th ranked Tech would pull away in the 2nd half to remain undefeated.  Now to the high school games.  We get the 35 second shot clock for all of them.  1 shot clock violation per game was what we ended up with.

Game 1: #5AAAA Hopkins 90 Hibbing 58
Hopkins with a 1st half barrage of triples to open up the lead.  They hit 6 of them in the 1st 9 minutes to open up a 15 point lead.  Mayson Brown with 5 1st half triples of his own for Hibbing to try to keep the Bluejackets within striking distance.  Hopkins by 19 at the half.  Brown would hit a couple more triples to cut the margin to 15 with 13 minutes left.  All Hopkins after that.  Kerwin Walton and Sawyer Shrake with triples and the rout is officially on.  Hopkins makes 15 triples.  Kerwin Walton with 4 of them and 17 points to lead Hopkins.  Jalen Treml 15 points and 3 treys.  More good minutes off the bench for guard Regan Merritt and he also hit 3 bombs and had 15 points.  Mayson Brown with 7 treys and 25 points to lead Hibbing.  Soph star Ayden McDonald adds 14.

Billy Crystal on the whistle for this one.  Fun strategy from Eden Prairie as they put their defensive ace Connor Christensen on DT Frierson and let him roam.  Dain Dainja beats the shot clock with a triple and finds a cutting Josh Lewis for a layup.  All Eden Prairie from there.  They go on a 36-3 run over 13 minutes before Park Center makes another field goal.  Park Center not pounding the ball inside (see also the Wednesday game vs Spring Lake Park).  Eden Prairie making everything with Christensen making 4 3s and Drake Dobbs with 3 triples and 15 points in the run.  36-8 Eden Prairie before Dainja scores via a nice mid-post move under the 4 minute mark.  Park Center with a couple of smaller runs in the 2nd half but the outcome is never in doubt.  EP doesn't score a FG in the last 4 minutes.  A Park Center 10-0 run with starters vs the EP reserves ends the game to make it look more respectable.  Drake Dobbs finishes with 31 points and 4 triples.  Connor Christensen 5 triples and 19 points.  Austin Andrews also adds 19 points.  The big 4 score all but 1 point for the Eagles.  Dain Dainja leads Park Center with 22 points.  DT Frierson 15.  Josh Brown all 12 of his points in the 2nd half as he led one of the mini runs in the 2nd half.  Eden Prairie now 8-0 in their games against the currently ranked AAAA teams (Armstrong is only one they haven't played).  Only 1 of those games has been at home.  They still have trips to De La Salle (next weekend) and Minnehaha in February.

Game 3: #9AAAA East Ridge 64 Rochester Mayo 63
Hollywood and young Hollywood get the whistles for this one.  Usually only see them in Breakdown events.  Mayo with 6 3s in less than the 1st 11 minutes.  That leads to a 24-8 lead.  Defensively they swarmed Ben Carlson and basically ignored the rest of the East Ridge roster not named Kendall Blue.  East Ridge stops the bleeding to be within 13 at the break.  A good start to the 2nd half for East Ridge with a 9-0 run after the 1st hoop of the half.  Carlson caps that with a coast to coast dunk.  Raptors within 6 and now its game on.  Mayo keeps the lead with a nice Gabe Madsen cut on a BLOB for a layup.  Mason Madsen with a drive for 2.  Michael Sharp 2 buckets from Gabe Madsen before Gabe pops a jumper.  52-43 Mayo 8 minutes left.

East Ridge getting productivity out of a Kendall Blue and Ben Carlson high pick and roll.  Blue already with a 3 just before this.  He then adds on the next 3 Raptors hoops with a couple mid range hoops and a 3 point play chance.  Ben Carlson 2 free throws and then a monster dunk.  Blue adds a triple and we're tied at 56 with 5 minutes left.  East Ridge run is 13-2 over 2:15.  Blue dunks a turnover and Carlson adds a dunk on a BLOB after it appeared he didn't re-establish inbounds.  Coach Madsen of Mayo is HOT about that and lets the refs know about it.  That's the 1st East Ridge lead 60-58 with 3:33 left.  Ball bouncing around leads to a messy Rob Jeter 2 with 2:22 left.  62-58 Raptors after a 19-4 run.  Mayo scores and then misses a chance to tie.  East Ridge ball with 1:09 left but we have the shot clock so no holding the ball.  Blue gets bumped with 3 left on the shot clock and he'll make both ends of the bonus with 46.2 left.  Mayo 2 misses, East Ridge 2 turnovers.  The last one with 12.7 left looks like a blown Hollywood call.  Sharp buries a 3 with 4.4 left to cut it to 1.  East Ridge struggles to get it in.  Its tipped and rolling around and maybe the clock started late.  Its out of bounds to Mayo with 0.6 left.  They're out of timeouts but a popout screen for Gabe Madsen gives him a great left corner look for 3 at the buzzer but its no good.  East Ridge wins after trailing by 16 in the 1st half and being down 11 with 7:30 left.  Kendall Blue with 23 points to lead East Ridge.  Ben Carlson a bunch of boards and he stepped up in the 2nd half to finish with 16 points.  Michael Sharp leads Mayo with 3 triples and 17 points.  Gabe Madsen 16 points and a handful of assists.  Nice well-rounded game from Mason Madsen with 8 points and similar numbers on the assists and rebounds ledger.

Raider Raptor Resumption

Prologue
To Cretin-Derham Hall for the resumption of series between the Raiders and East Ridge.  These 2 continue to battle it out for supremacy in the Suburban East.  This year is no different with both teams coming in undefeated in league play.  T-Rod and I AM NOT LITHGOW get both the JV and Varsity and joined by a 3rd for the big tilt.  No concessions just before halftime so I miss out on the fantastic hot dogs.  But that means the vending machine for Dr. Pepper instead of Coke which is a decent consolation prize.  A rare band appearance as well as we get some classic 80s from the CDH pep bend.  Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo in the house to watch Tre Holloman.

Game Time:
Tre Holloman with a lob to J'Vonne Hadley for 2 and an assist to Curtis Jones for 3.  That was a sign of things to come for CDH on this night.  A turnover leads to a lob dunk for Hadley.  That's part of a 14-2 row that allows CDH to open an 21-10 lead with just over 8:30 left in the half.  Game all at CDH's pace with the East Ridge size not punishing.  But the Raptors do start to get pound the interior more.  Ben Carlson with a 3 point play and 2 free throws.  Brody Kriesel adds a layup before a Carlson lefty finish.  That cuts the lead to 25-22 at the 5 minute mark.  Holloman pops a lane jumper before a Jones layup.  But East Ridge responds with an extra pass for a Kendall Blue triple and bonus freebies from Carlson.  Those are the last 5 points of the half to keep East Ridge within 32-27 at the break.

Second half is a big dose of things in 3s.  Carlson with a 3 point play on the break.  Hadley and Blue trade triples.  Blue a triple and Carlson puts back his own miss.  Holloman for 3, Jones for 3 and then Holloman leaves it for Jones in transition for another bomb.  Time out East Ridge with 12:12 left as the CDH lead grows to 53-40.  Carlson with a 3 point play, baseline drive and dunk plus a putback all around a Hadley triple to get it back to 56-47 with 10:40 left.

Hadley gets doubled in the post and finds the cutting Will Burke for a layup.  Jones adds another hoop to keep the lead at 13.  Kriesel grabs a miss and makes 2 FTs.  Carlson with a 3 and a bucket but CDH with 3 buckets to keep the lead.  Blue's 3 point play with 3:33 left fouls out Jack Tauer (DANG IT CHLOE!) keeps it at 9.  But that's the last gasp for East Ridge.  2 turnovers lead to CDH hoops and its over.  CDH wins round 1 73-62.  They'll meet again at East Ridge on the final night of the regular season next month.  Then a possible clash in the section 4AAAA playoffs.

Post Game:
Ben Carlson leads East Ridge with 33 points and a bunch of rebounds.  Not very many true post touches for him though.  He spent more time handling the ball then he did in true post ups. Kendall Blue adds 19 points with 3 triples on the night.  But the rest of the roster only scores 10 points, 6 of those from Brody Kriesel. They'll need more production than that.  East Ridge falls to 11-5 overall, 8-1 and now 2nd place in Suburban East.  They have a quick turnaround with another difficult matchup against Rochester Mayo and the Madsen twins tomorrow in the hall of fame classic at Anoka-Ramsey.  Then back to league play next week with Park at home and at White Bear Lake.

Cretin-Derham Hall improves to 14-2 overall, 9-0 in the Suburban East.  Curtis Jones with 5 3s and 24 points to lead the Raiders.  He was very effective getting looks both in the halfcourt and transition.  J'Vonne Hadley adds 14 points.  Tre Holloman 14 points, a bunch of assists and some harassing defense for steals to boot.  If he's scoring and distributing, that's what makes CDH so tough to deal with.  Overall the game didn't surprise me as I thought Carlson would get his but CDH would have too much firepower.  That's exactly how it played out.  The adjustments in future games will be fun to see.  Next up, CDH makes the long league road trips next week to Stillwater and Forest Lake.

Court Storming at the Lakes

Prologue
Its a slick and snowy winter evening on the trip to Minneapolis Southwest.  The Lakers taking on Washburn in the rivalry battle of the southwest corner of the city.  Blah cheese pizza on the menu with Coke, a very meh combination.  Big crowd on hand and it was about 3/4 students.  Augsburg and Carleton also in the building looking on.  KB and the Sunshine Band with special guest The Old Spice Guy on the whistles.

Game Time:
Offense hard to come by for much of the 1st half.  Christo Polydorou was the exception to that.  He goes 3 point play, triple, a lefty finish for 2 and a free throw.  12-7 SW at 9:18.  Josh Rogers with a quiet 1st half but his steal and dunk followed by 2 free throws gives Washburn a 14-12 lead at 5:55.  Those were his only points of the half.  But Washburn scores only 1 FG the rest of the half after that dunk (span of 7:30).  Cam Holter scoops and scores plus a pair of freebies.  Hakeem Ford bookends the run with a 2 to start and a 3 to end it.  15-2 Lakers run to end the half.  That gives SW a 27-16 lead at the break.

Rogers gets his game going in the 2nd half.  An assist to a cutter for a layup.  He adds a drive for a bucket and another drive for 1-2 FTs to cut the lead to 4.  Then a technical on Southwest leads to 2 Rogers free throws.  He'll grab a miss and go all the way the other way for 2 more.  That puts Washburn back on top 39-38 with 8:30 left.  Game on!

Get all the kids standing for the rest of the night with under 5 min left in regulation.  Quick sidenote thanks to South coach Joe Hyser.  The heating registers on the walls were moved up because back in the day the kids would bang on them in an already loud gym.  You can actually see the original holes in the walls if you look closely.  Didn't matter tonight as we get standing on the top shelf and banging on them.  These are even low enough that I can reach them standing on the top row (but I have to stretch out my 7'4" frame).

Rogers with a putback and the foul with 4:30 left and Washburn leads by 3.  Ford a putback and Polydorou 2 free throws to put SW back ahead.  Rogers takes a dumpoff for a layup.  Ben Elias give and go in the spread floor against pressure defense.  51-50 SW with 2:15 left.  After a couple of misses and turnovers, Holter with a free throw with 43.9 left for a 2 point lead.  Rogers to the rack for 2 and the harm with 25.7 left but misses the FT.  SW will advance that miss and take timeout with 16.4 left.  They decide to go high pick and roll for Polydorou.  He turns it over and Washburn just barely runs out of time to get the winning layup.  Its after the buzzer so we'll play overtime tied at 52.

Each team with a putback to start their offense in the free session. Washburn misses 2 late free throws and has a turnover.  Southwest with their own turnover.  Then out of a timeout with under a minute left they go quick and miss. That gives Washburn the ball back with 32.7 left.  They'll take time and then hold it until their final timeout with 5.6 left.  Interesting choice as you now have to get the ball inbounds.

The final SLOB is a busted play.  It was their standard throw and go action with Rogers taking it out and immediately getting it back.  That was there all night but not on this possession.  Rogers gets denied trying to get it back from post David Worman.  Worman gives it up to somebody else, gets it back on the right block and turns for the bank at the buzzer.  Its good!  Washburn kids storm the court.  Millers win 56-54 in OT.

Post Game:
Josh Rogers with 20 of his 24 points after halftime to lead Washburn.  Nobody else with more than 7 for the Millers.  Only 2 points for Jamar Nelson but I thought he did some good things for them coming off the bench at the point guard spot.  That helped get some of the ballhandling duties away from Rogers.  Rogers also had the task of guarding Christo Polydorou for much of the night.  I liked what they were trying to do out of their chin offense.  Washburn improves to 6-7 overall, 4-2 in the Minneapolis City. That keeps them 1 game behind Henry for 2nd place.  Next up is the late game in the South Metro Showcase at Burnsville on Saturday night.  Then an important one in the city at Edison next Tuesday.

Southwest falls to 2-3 in the city, 7-7 overall.  A big loss for the Lakers in the race for the 6 seed in section 6AAAA.  They are off until next week when they face Sibley at home on Wednesday and Edison at home on Friday.  Cristo Polydorou with 16 points to lead the offense.  Soph Hakeem Ford chips in with 15 from his forward spot. Soph wing Cam Holter adds 10.  Lakers had plenty of chances late plus the 11 point lead at the half.  Good game to learn from for the young squad.

Piracy on the open seas

Prologue
No jacket required (with apologies to Phil Collins) but shoes and shirt thankfully are.  Bring your skyway navigation device as we're off to Target Center for a rare mid-week double dip in the NW Suburban between Park Center and Spring Lake Park.  The Park Center girls pull away for a 25 point win in the early game.  Dain Dainja back in the Park Center lineup after a 2 week absence.

Game Time:
Interesting rotation for Park Center with Josh Lewis and Dawson Rudolph in the starting lineup.  That moves Josh Brown and John Grigsby to the bench rotation.  Blake Remme a couple of triples and 2 more buckets.  Gabe Myren adds a couple of layups.  Spring Lake Park builds a 22-13 lead at the 7:18 mark.  Then Park Center starts to use their size against the small Panthers lineup.  DT Frierson 2 inside hoops.  Dain Dainja in the post for 2 more buckets.  Frierson then goes coast to coast off a bad 3 from Spring Lake Park.  Frierson runs for 2 more and Dainja inside again.  12-0 run for a 29-27 PC lead late in the half.  Remme with 2 freebies and a nice spin move for the final points of the half.  33-32 Spring Lake Park at the half.

Grigsby with a pair of triples as PC opens up a 46-39 lead with over 12 minutes left.  Daydor Phillips with the difficult task of defending Dainja all game.  But he adds a triple, Jacob Say hits from deep and Remme with an emphatic dunk plus another triple.  That ties the game at 50 with 9:23 left.  Big man James Parker with 5 straight inside for PC thanks to 2 bullying hoops and a FT.  Remme and Phillips playing with 4 fouls as we go under 4:30.  Remme scores and then Dainja scores with 3:35 left.  60-56 Park Center in the lead.

Out of that Dainja bucket, he goes down in a heap grabbing his right knee.  He'll stay down for a good couple of minutes but good to see he's fairly mobile when he gets up.  But nobody expected him to be so mobile that he almost went directly to the scorer's table to check in.  He gets called back by the trainers to do some movement tests.  He returns when Phillips fouls out with 1:46 left.  Park Center makes 2 free throws and misses 2 others.  But they get both misses back which leads to 2 more free throws.  That pushes the lead to 8 to 1:21 left.  Dainja shows no ill effects of the injury as he blocks a shot, grabs that rebound, pushes it up count and finds Frierson for a lob dunk as icing on the cake.  #7AAAA Park Center wins 69-62.

Post Game:
Spring Lake Park falls to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the NW Suburban.  That drops them out of a 3 way tie for 2nd in the loss column in the brutally tough West division.  Blake Remme 3 triples and 25 points to lead the Panthers.  Gabe Myren 14 points and a couple of 3s.  They have a tough home game with Armstrong on Friday.  Then the schedule lightens up with 4 straight crossover games.  I'll see the home game vs Elk River next Wednesday.

Dain Dainja 17 points, 7 rebs and 2 blocks on my sheet.  DT Frierson 14 points.  David Ijadimbola 9 of his 12 in the 1st half.  When Park Center pounded the ball inside, they got whatever they wanted from Dainja, Frierson or Parker.  Spring Lake Park tried to take Frierson's defender and back him off into Dainja's lap which was effective early on.  Pirates tried a bit of everything with the rotation.  Parker with and without Dainja.  Brown and Grigsby off the bench to provide a huge punch to the 2nd unit.  Josh Lewis with good minutes in the starting lineup from his guard spot.  The Pirates have a quick turnaround tomorrow at Rogers.

Saturday its the big matchup vs #1AAAA Eden Prairie at Anoka-Ramsey on Saturday night.  The snow does Park Center a huge favor as it seems like Dainja would not have played had the game gone on as scheduled last weekend.  Then there's the injury question from tonight.  Was there just a scary moment with nothing tonight or did he get thru in the heat of the moment and there's something notable there?

Mustangs trample the Beacons

Prologue
To Maranatha where the concessions are great (pepperoni tonight) and they still have MCAA Conference in the lane. Smallest crowd I think I've ever seen at a MCA game.  Used to be one of the great home court advantages in the metro when the Hanson clan was there.  The opponent is Concordia Academy in a matchup of teams trying to keep up with St. Croix Prep in the Skyline Conference.  Coach Eric Schutte sporting a fantastic basketball tie (note to self, must find) to go with his usual restaurant quality suit.

Game Time:
Maranatha making the choice to go zone all game.  That contributes to an early barrage of 3s from both sides.  Hakim Daniels with a pair of bombs for MCA.  Aaron TerHaar with a midrange jumper and 4 triples vs the zone for Concordia.  19-17 Concordia at the 8:10 mark.  Its all Maranatha from there.  Daniels with a bucket sandwiched between 2 Maciah Harut hoops.  Benji Bruce with 3 back breaking triples in the last 2:25.  MCA ends the half on a 15-5 run.  39-27 Mustangs at the break.

Maranatha clamps down on the shooting and Concordia gets careless with the ball in the 2nd half.  On offensive end for MCA the 3s keep coming.  MCA knocks down a pair of them.  Daniels a putback followed by a Jeremiah LaVelle 3 and a Daniels layup.  52-30 Maranatha leading with 12:45 left.  Then a great sequence for Daniels with a drive for 2, a block on 1 end that leads to a putback on the offensive end.  Harut 2 layups and Daniels puts back another miss for a 63-35 lead with 8:35 left.  We don't get running time but the outcome is never in doubt either.  Maranatha wins 75-54.

Post Game:
For Concordia, not the start they wanted to a very tough week.  Aaron TerHaar leads the Beacons with 19 points and 5 triples.  14 of those points and 4 triples in the 1st 10 minutes though.  After that Maranatha did a much better job of finding him and closing gaps in the zone.  Essay Hagos with only 7 points and 5 of those in the final 5 minutes.  He had good looks but couldn't buy a shot all night.  Freshman AJ Greene with another productive outing of 11 points and 3 triples.  Concordia falls to 4-1 in the Skyline, 11-4 overall.  They host league leader #5AA St. Croix Prep on Friday.

Hakim Daniels leads Maranatha with 22 points.  He knocked in a couple of 3s to go with his usual pounding the boards and running the floor.  Benji Bruce 12 points.  Miciah Harut a solid night at the point with 14 points and harassing defense on top of the MCA zones.  Tough to beat MCA when they hit double digit 3s like they did tonight.  The Mustangs improve to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the Skyline.  4 of those losses are to ranked teams including 3 of the top 6 in class AA.  They stay home to play St. Agnes on Friday before playing #7AAA Waconia at Burnsville in the South Metro Showcase on Saturday night.
