A defensive playoff tune up

Prologue
Now its back to the South Suburban for the #3AAAA Eastview vs #6AAAA Shakopee rematch.  This looked like it might decide the league title, but Eastview already clinched coming in.  Shakopee trying to keep 2nd place in the league all to themselves rather than share it with Lakeville North

Game Time
A really rough start for Eastview.  They start 2-15 shooting with 8 turnovers.  The only 2 makes were steals for a dunk and a layup by Henry Shannon.  The best offense of the 1st half was Shakopee looking for Sam West inside as Eastview went small on him with one of the bigs having to guard Nick Katona.  West took advantage for 8 first half points.  Its a 12-2 start for Shakopee.  Mick Wherley with a right corner triple, an inside bucket and 2 of 4 free throws late in the half. Shakopee stretches the lead to 26-13 at the break. 

Shakopee with 3 early buckets as Eastview turns it over 3 more times.  32-18 Sabers when their offense falls apart.  Eastview turns it over 4 more times before they finally start getting some shots up.  Grayson Stalboerger for 3.  Kenji Scales for 3 and 2 FTs. Brady Schmitz backdoor for 2 and adds 2 FTs.  Zach Spann and Aryan Kohli for 3s.  Shakopee can't throw it in the ocean to get the MoKiller timeout.  The Eastview run is 20-1 with 8 Shakopee turnovers included.  Eastview on top 38-33.  Shakopee in a stretch of 1 FG in 20 trips.  Wherley and Shannon trading points.  Wherley's 2 FTs with 1:54 left keep Shakopee within 42-39.  Kenji Scales 3-4 FTs with a Shannon swat sandwiched inbetween.  

Scales both ends of the bonus before Katona hits a 3 and gets fouled.  The FT is no good but Shakopee still within 1 possession.  47-44 Eastview with 50 seconds left.  They miss a front end and Wherley goes quick to cut the lead to 1.  Eastview breaks the press but turns it over in the front court with 10 seconds left.  Shakopee out of timeouts.  They get it to the front court.  Katona gets a wide open look at the top of the key at the buzzer that's no good.  Eastview wins 47-46. 

Post Game
Shakopee falls to 13-5 on the season.  But with Lakeville North's upset loss to Prior Lake, the Sabers still claim 2nd place outright in the South Suburban.  Mick Wherley with 20 points.  Sam West with 8 of his 10 in the 1st half.  Nick Katona held to 8 points.  The Shakopee still likely the top seed in the wide open section 2AAAA bracket.

Eastview wins the South Suburban at 16-2.  They'll be the top seed in the 3AAAA playoffs and open with Burnsville next week.  Kenji Scales 10 points to lead the Lightning.  1 triple and 7 of 8 from the free throw line for Scales.  Henry Shannon held to 8 points.  Grayson Stalboerger all 8 of his points in the 2nd half with a couple of 3s.

This one wasn't pretty but Czar's Law still holds to go to 94-21 on the season.  Eastview started 2-15 and then finished the game 13-20 from the floor.  Shakopee started 12-25 and then finished 3-20 as the game totally flipped early in the 2nd half.    But they do get the perfect analytics shot chart.  Turnovers end up being a wash.  Shakopee with the edge on the offensive board and at the foul line.  But they leave 8 points at the charity stripe.  The 0.80 PPP for Eastview may take the cake for lowest winning value of the season.

Completing the clean slate

Prologue
Back to the Northwest Suburban for another battle.  #1AAAA Champlin Park hosting Park Center.  Park Center gave away a late lead in the 1st meeting before losing on a late bucket in overtime.   This one a possible preview of a section 5AAAA final.  Seeding implications for Park Center at stake.

Game Time
Senior night for Champlin Park means Baron Bahn and Darien Hoek in the starting lineup.  Bahn and Hoek with early 3s and a Bahn postup puts the Rebels up 10-5 at 14:40.  Dawson Rudolph 2 triples to get Park Center back to even before a 7-0 run puts Champlin Park up 17-10.  Francis Nwaokorie 2 freebies and a post bucket for a 25-19 lead.  Rudolph with a late triple and a Champlin Park turnover.  Ayouba Berthe with a triple off of that just before the buzzer.  32-30 Champlin Park at the break.

Blocked shot on 1 end leads to a Josh Strong putback.  40-34 Rebels stretch the lead.  A score delay of over 5 minutes with the scoreboard being incorrect.  After total mismanagement of that, they do get it right and we're back underway with 13:09 left.  Strong backcuts the inbounds for a bucket, 46-39 Rebels. 

Braeden Carrington with a tough bucket.  Rudolph with his 4th triple of the night and we're back to even at 46.  Nwaokorie fouled for the 4th on James Parker with 7:51 left.  He adds another post bucket and with PC going small, he takes advantage for 2 FTs.  Leo Torbor counters that for PC with 2 buckets and a free throw.  61-59 Champlin Park with 3:34 left and Parker will come back in.  

The Rebels add 3 of 4 FTs to stretch the lead to 5.  Carrington with a pullup jumper to keep PC within 3.  Pirates get a couple of chances late to tie or take the lead.  They'll miss a 3 and another miss with 1 minute left while down by 2.  Strong with 2 clutch FTs with 37 seconds left to keep it at 2 possessions.  PC 1 of 2 FTs and Gichaba with a dunk to break the pressure.  Carrington fouled on a 3 with 12 seconds left.  Makes 2 of 3 to keep the Pirates within 3 points. 3 of 4 FTs from Champlin Park seal it.  Champlin Park wins 72-66.

Post Game
Park Center falls to 13-5 with the loss.  It likely locks them into the 3 seed in section play and a 1st round matchup next week with Roseville.  Braeden Carrington is unorthodox but gets the job done.  He leads PC with 16 points.  Ayouba Berthe effectively hounded Josh Strong most of the night.  Plus he added 15 points.  Dawson Rudolph 4 triples for 12 points.  When I see Leo Torbor 2 things stick out immediately.  Bounce and Burst.  A super quick 1st step and hops to go with it.  He scored 9 points but I see a breakout guy over the next year.

Champlin Park finishes the regular season at an undefeated 18-0.  They'll open with either Irondale or Centennial in the 5AAAA playoffs next Friday.  Francis Nwaokorie with 25 points to lead the Rebels.  Dylan Gichaba with 13 and Josh Strong with 12.  19 of those 25 in the 2nd half. The role guys chip in just enough and they make just enough plays.  This was their 7th win by 7 points or less.  Coach Tuch looking like the hands down AAAA coach of the year with all the talent that graduated from last season.

Czar's Law improves to 93-21 for the season.  Biggest difference in this one is at the foul line. Champlin Park shoots 21-27 compared to 12-19 for Park Center.  Champlin Park slightly better from the field as well.

Rebels still yelling from the mountain top

Prologue
Its a top notch non-conference battle in the NW Suburban as #1AAAA Champlin Park visits #2AAA Totino-Grace.  Champlin Park won the 1st meeting by 10 and ran the table at 13-0 in the single round robin edition of 2021 conference play.

Game Time
Close game early when Demarion Watson sits with 2 fouls at the 12:37 mark.  Taison Chatman to CJ O'Hara as the teams are out running.  11-10 Champlin Park at 11:45.  Josh Strong 2 buckets, Francis Nwaokorie and Dylan Gichaba for 3.  Rebels expand the lead to 24-14.  Nwaokorie 2 buckets as he's taking over inside.  33-21 Champlin Park at 6:45.  He adds a 3 point play to stretch the lead to 41-27.  Chatman with the last 7 TG points of the half via a drive and nice lefty finish.  A straight away triple and 2 freebies finish that spurt.  43-32 Champlin Park leads at half.

The Eagles storm back with top 2 sophs.  O'Hara backdoor for 2 to start the half.  Chatman and O'Hara for 3.  Chatman converts a turnover and O'Hara adds 2 free throws.  DJ Akpati with the 1st of 2 triples to flip the scoreboard.  Its a 16-4 TG run to start the half.  48-47 Eagles take the lead with 13:30 to play.  Akpati and Devin Burger from deep for a 58-56 TG lead with 8:20 left.  Strong with 2 triples countered by 2 Watson buckets.  62 all with 6:18 to play.

Once again late in the half the pace slows dramatically.  Nwaokorie in the post for 2 free throws with 2 minutes left.  Then in the post for a dunk with 1 minute left and the Rebels go up by 4.  Burger quickly counters for 3 with 45.8 left.  Rebels get a layup.  TG down 3 has a chance.  Chatman on the iso gets a good straight away look and its in and out with 15 seconds left.  Rebels make 1 FT before an Akpati hoop with 1.5 left.  Rebels miss a front end, TG takes the quick timeout with 0.5 left down 2.  But their full court attempt doesn't yield anything.  Champlin Park wins 71-69.

Post Game
Totino-Grace falls to 13-4 overall with the loss.  They get 4 players in double figures.  Taison Chatman with 16 points, CJ O'Hara 14.  Devin Burger with 11 and DJ Akpati with 13 points off the bench.  Both of them made 3 treys.  Never really saw an offensive rhythm for the Eagles.   Lots of 1 on 1 play.  The Eagles are still looking at the 2 seed in the ridiculousness known as section 4AAA where the top 3 teams in the current AAA poll reside.  TG finishes the regular season on Thursday at Anoka.

Champlin Park continues their impressive season as they remain undefeated at 17-0.  I'll see their finale vs Park Center on Thursday as well.  Francis Nwaokorie did whatever he wanted on the way to 32 points.  But it wasn't just the post play.  He hit a 3 and had more than 1 scenario where he faced up and made a scoring play off the dribble.  Josh Strong 15 points and 3 triples including a couple big ones in the 2nd half as TG threatened to build a lead.  Dylan Gichaba adds 12 points.  The Rebels are looking at the top seed in the deep section 5AAAA playoffs.

Czar's Law now 89-20 as Champlin Park wins the EFG battle.  The Rebels get the perfect analytics shot chart.  They go 20-35 in the paint thanks to Nwaokorie going nuts.  That's compared to 13-24 for TG along with their 2-9 on mid-range 2s.  Champlin Park loses the turnover battle 16-9 but for live ball buckets going the other way, I actually had a 2-1 Rebels edge.

Dueling Sophs

Prologue
A couple of top level games on the schedule tonight but I decide to look for a more individual matchup.  Its from the Suburban East and section 4AAAA.  The Ponies of Stillwater galloping down highway 36 to White Bear Lake.  The first game between these teams was a 68-66 thriller with a White Bear Lake steal and layup to win it with 4 seconds left.  But its the matchup of top sophomore guards in this one that really catches my eye.  White Bear Lake's Jack Janicki had 39 in the 1st meeting.  Max Shikenjanski had 36 for Stillwater.

Game Time
The 1st half was the Max Shikenjanski show.  He'll spin for 2 and then kick for 3.  12-5 Stillwater leads.  Max from deep at the 10 minute mark for a 19-15 lead.  He'll add a pretty backdoor cut for 2, a drive for 2 and then he grabs 2 of his own misses for another bucket.  18 points in the 1st 11 minutes and a pair of assists in the 1st 27 Ponies points.  27-19 Stillwater at 7:10.  Kanye Raheem keeping White Bear Lake close with a triple and a 3 point play off a turnover.   Stillwater 38-29 at the break.

Jack Janicki with a very quiet first half thanks to a faceguarding Stillwater defense.  He heats up in the 2nd half.  A steal for 2 and a 3 point play around 2 Raheem free throws ties the game at 42 with 13:51 to play.  Stillwater puts the game away with a 12-2 run.  Who else but Max Shikenjanski.  Great off ball movement to go over a DHO and then come right back and get it for a 3 (thank you Duncan Robinson).  A drive for 2 and then a pretty assist to big brother Sam for 2 and the foul.  54-44 Stillwater back up by double digits with 8:59 left.

Max with a free throw and then Stillwater runs their offense to the other side to get him a flare 3.  But its only fitting that Tyler Tompkins gets the backdoor layup out of the Princeton point action to slam the door with 2:45 left. He was the stopper on Janicki for most of the night.  White Bear Lake misses, Stillwater goes 4 corners and the rest is free throws.  Stillwater with a nice road win 69-55.

Post Game
White Bear Lake falls to 7-9 overall and in Suburban East play.  They finish up with Woodbury and at Forest Lake.  First round of the 4AAAA playoffs is looking like a trip to Tartan or East Ridge.  Jack Janicki was shut down in the 1st half.  But he scores 16 of his 18 in the 2nd half to top the Bears scoring chart.  But he really had to work to get his and took a bunch of tough shots.  Kanye Raheem with 11 of his 15 in the 1st half.

Stillwater improves to 3-13 with the loss. Max Shikenjanski goes for 37 points with 4 3s and a handful of assists.  Fun to see him move without the ball and orchestrate off the screen and roll.  While Stillwater had a new plan for Janicki in this game, I didn't see any real change in plan for Shikenjanski from White Bear Lake.  Stillwater ran Princeton point action and got quality looks all night.  Lots of high pick and roll from it on the screen and pop, but they also got the backcut on the pop a couple times.  Not to mention the spin to the weakside and then flare the top for a couple good looks too.  The Ponies still fighting with North St. Paul to get out of the cellar in the section standing and this win was a big help.  They have a winnable game against Irondale on Wednesday before finishing out at Mounds View on Friday.

Stillwater shot a ridiculous 15-20 (85% EFG) in the 1st half on their way to the win.  That also puts Czar's Law in the winner's column for a season record of 87-20.  Even without the late free throws, Stillwater with a big edge at the charity stripe going 14-23 with only 5-6 for White Bear Lake.  That number with shot selection were the difference.  Offensive Rebounds a non factor and turnovers dead even.

A Different 1st Saturday in March

This 1st Saturday of March has been my traditional trip to watch all 3 games in the Twin Cities Series.  But the pandemic means we have an overflowing plate of Saturday games.  The schedule would allow 4 but I slack off and do just 3 games on this busy day.

Game 1: Highland Park 64 Johnson 63
Only fitting that since I've seen many a Twin Cities game at Johnson on this day that start with their early game vs Highland Park.  These teams come in 1 game behind Central in the loss column for the top spot in the St. Paul City.  Johnson would open up a double digit first half lead thanks to a couple of triples and lead by 7 at the half.  Fast forward to the 2nd half and the Johnson lead is 57-43 with 7 minutes left.  The Scots fight back. Carter Owens for 3 and a putback to quickly cut the lead in half.  Joey Kottke pulls up for a deep 3 from Shoreview.  Nico Peterson scores off a nice dish.  Then he'll grab an offensive board for 2 and the foul.  Highland Park grabs the missed free throw and its Kottke again from deep.  Johnson lead down to 63-62 with 1:45 left.  Johnson travels to give the Scots the ball back.  Its Peterson with the offensive putback with 25 seconds left and the Scots take the lead.  Another Johnson turnover and now Johnson has to foul with 10 seconds left.  Highland Park misses 2 front ends but gets the rebound on both.  Highland Park now in the double bonus and they miss both of those.  Highland Park gives their final foul with 2.9 left.  Halfcourt attempt at the buzzer is no good.  Highland Park comes from 14 down in the last 7 minutes to steal one from the Govs.  Highland Park now 7-2 in the league and 1 game back of 1st.  They still control their own destiny in the St. Paul City with 2 games left vs Como Park and the season finale on March 15th at Central.  Johnson now 8-3 in the league and they fall to 3rd in the loss column in the league.  Highland Park won both meetings by 1 point this season.  Carter Owens 17 points, Joey Kottke 15 points for Highland Park.  Christian Jones 13 points, Julian Hodges 12 to lead Johnson.

Game 2: #4AAA South St. Paul 76 #9AAAA Tartan 67
South St. Paul won the 1st meeting 70-69 in overtime.  Now the rematch with the Packers leading the league by that 1 game over the Titans.  A Packers win would most likely give them the Metro East title outright.  Curtis Favors gets going late in the half for Tartan.  Plus David Perkins providing 8 pts off the bench.  That helps Tartan to a 34-29 halftime lead.

D'Marco Chelley carrying the Tartan offense in the 2nd half.  But Tartan with no answer for Devin Newsome off the bounce.  He finishes a 14-2 run with a 3 point play for a 43-36 SSP lead.  Chelley a 3 point play and a triple.  Perkins for 3, Chelley 3 point play and we're tied at 48.  Alonzo Dodd coast to coast for 2 and and assist for a 58-54 SSP lead with 6:10 left.  Newsome a 3 point play, 2 buckets from Marquise Gleb on turnovers and 2 buckets from Newsome.  9-2 run puts SSP up 70-60 with 2:25 left and its over.  Newsome finishes with 28 points, 22 of them in the 2nd half. Alonzo Dodd adds 13.  D'Marco Chelly with 15 of his 19 in the 2nd half to keep the Tartan offense going.  David Perkins 14 off the bench including 3 triples.  Dewayne Thompson with 11.

Game 3: Farmington 53 Shakopee 49
Nick Katona end to end for an early 8-4 Shako lead.  The Farmington 1-3-1 really slowing the pace and messing with Shakopee.  Max Darrington finishes an 11-0 Tigers run for a 15-8 Farmington lead. Then its Katona with 4 triples to provide the rest of the offense for the half for both sides.  20-17 Shakopee at the break.

Shakopee with 9 turnovers in the 1st 10 times down the floor to start the 2nd half.  But only 3 buckets and a FT from Farmington in that stretch.  But that still allows the Tigers to regain the lead 25-20.  Frosh Isaac Snell off the bench with 2 3s to finally break the ice for Shakopee just outside the 10 minute mark.  26-25 Shakopee back on top.  

Isaac Ask with a bucket and a 3 point play to end a 13-4 Farmington run.  Tigers up 38-30 as we go under 6 minutes left.  Katona back to his scoring ways with an offense board for 2 free throws and a triple.  Yonis Mohamud with his 2nd and 3rd treys of the half to pull Shako within 45-43 at the 2 minute mark.  Shako misses a front end and 1 of 2 free throws on the next possession.  But they'll trap and get the jump ball call with just under a minute left.  Arrow goes their way but a 3 to tie is no good with 45 seconds left.  Ask makes 5 of 6 free throws to close the game out.  Ask scores all 15 of his points in the 2nd half to lead Farmington.  Eli Green adds 12 pts for the Tigers.  Nick Katona with 16 of the 20 Shakopee points in the 1st half.  He finishes with 26 points and 5 3s.  Yonis Mohamud adds 3 triples in the 2nd half off the bench for 9 points  Farmington remains in the 4th place log jam in the South Suburban at 10-6.  Shakopee drops into a 2nd place tie with Lakeville North at 12-4.  Those 2 will play in Lakeville on Tuesday.

Shakopee with 45 field goal attempts and this wild number.  37 of them were from 3 as they struggled to find good looks vs the 1-3-1 all night.  Also had 22 turnovers and 7-17 from the charity stripe.  But they win EFG because they made 10 of those 3s. That means Czar's law goes 1-2 on the day.  Now 86-20 for the season.  Farmington with one of the lower PPP numbers I've seen for a winning team all season at 0.80.

Tigers pounce at the buzzer

Prologue
One team that isn't officially on my coverage list now that they dropped down to AAA is St. Francis. But they have the talented forward duo of junior Cody Pennebaker and soph Matthew Bothun. With the Saints hosting section foe Fridley in what looked like a possible opening round game, that's enough to get my attention.

Game Time
Pennebaker with a strong start.  He has 6 points and a couple of dunks early.  Saints up 8-2 early.  Fridley counters with an 11-2 run of their own. Christian Crockett with a bucket and nice assist to Devin Williams in the run.  Now St. Francis needs a timeout down 13-8 at the 10 minute mark.  After a long delay (maybe a clock issue, couldn't tell on telecast), its Bothun with 2 FTs and a triple for a 19-17 St. Francis lead.  Next 7 to Fridley with Williams scoring 2 buckets.  Last 8 of the half to St. Francis with a Bothun 3 and Pennebaker spin for a 3 point play.  27-24 St. Francis at the half.

Pennebaker keeps it going with 2 buckets and a triple to push the lead to 38-29.  Williams keeping Fridley in it with 3-4 early FTs and finally gets Fridley's 1st hoop of the half at 13:20.  Micah Niewald and Eli elsen with triples around another Pennebaker steal and dunk. Tra'Vione Stevenson has his 3 rejected but he'll grab that for a 3 point play.  Nelsen another 3 and its Williams on the run for a layup with 8:35 left.  Fridley back on top 44-43 after a 15-4 run.

A momentum shift as Fridley gets called for a technical for touching the ball in the hands of the inbounder on a BLOB.  St. Francis converts the 2 technical FTs and adds a 3 point on the possession.  Pennebaker with a bucket and 1 of 2 free throws.  51-46 St. Francis with 6:15 left.  Crockett bonus free throws and Stevenson with a 3 to cut the lead to 1.  Bothun back in for St. Francis after a break.  Not sure if that was related to fouls or not.  He scores with 3:30 left for a 55-51 St. Francis lead.

Niewald with a floater and Williams scoring to tie the game at 55 with 2:35 left.  Bothun with 2 FTs, Saints add a stop and a Brady Johnson drive with 2 minutes left to go back up 2 possessions, 59-55, with 2 minutes left.  Stevenson makes 1 of 2 free throws and St. Francis turns it over.  Out of a timeout Fridley goes Horns ball screen look with Nelsen and Williams as the screeners.  Nelson wide open popping for the straight away 3 with 1:20 left to tie the game at 59.  St. Francis misses a good look with about 1:05 left.

Fridley grabs that rebound and they'll run offense until 9.2 left.  Out of the time out, we're back to the same screen and roll set just mentioned.  This time the Saints stay with Nelsen but there's 2 on the ball off the Williams screen and he's wide open at the rim for a layup with 1.1 left.  St. Francis takes timeout.  Their long pass is fumbled away.  Fridley wins 61-59

Post Game
St. Francis falls to 10-5 with the loss.  Cody Pennebaker leads the Saints with 25 points.  16 of those in the 2nd half.  Matthew Bothun 19 points and a bunch of blocks inside.  He also knocked down a pair of threes.  Nice performance from the sophomore.  Bjorn Hallberg adds 10 points.  Saints have 3 games next week including a trip to Mississippi 8 leader Princeton on Thursday in a battle of the top 2 teams in the league.  This was a big loss in terms of section play.  With Delano already having a win over Princeton who beat St. Francis, the 1 seed was already a stretch, but this will likely lock them into the 2 seed. 

Fridley improves to 5-8 overall. Don't be fooled by the record, 6 of those losses are to ranked Tri-Metro teams.  Fridley was 7th in the QRF in the section coming in to the game.  St. Croix Lutheran and Columbia Heights are still on the schedule.  But the big one is against Big Lake next Friday.  Win that and regardless of record and computers, they'd deserve no worse than the 5 seed.  A crazy person might even say they've had a ridiculous schedule and beaten St. Francis and Big Lake so give them the 2 seed.  Devin Williams with 21 points to lead Fridley.  A very active game inside for the forward.  Tra'Vione Stevenson 14 points and Eli Nelsen adds 13 big ones off the bench.

Czar's Law takes a fall here again to fall to 85-18 on the season.  Fridley therefore as expected does win the turnover battle.  One of the prices of Bothun's blocks was that many of them were out of bounds so Fridley got them back.  Between 9 fewer turnovers and 10 more offensive boards, Fridley gets 15 more shots and makes 3 more.  That makes up for only 7-15 from the charity stripe.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Prologue
The title is a 2004 John Fogerty song about repeating mistakes from the Vietnam War.  But tonight its about repeating great games.  Tonight's its a NW Suburban rematch between Spring Lake Park and Maple Grove.  SLP won at home 53-52 in overtime in the 1st meeting.  Have to expect something close to that in this one. 

Game Time
Kaleb Skelly converts a turnover for an early 10-7 Spring Lake Park lead.  Maple Grove takes a timeout and they'll respond with an 11-2 run to force a SLP timeout.  Payton Thomsen off the Spring Lake Park to provide a spark.  He knocks down 3 straight triples and the Panthers cut the lead to 22-21. Jack Leifker with a slick finish on the run.  Panthers back on top 27-25 late in the half.  We go to halftime tied at 29.  

Maple Grove opens the 2nd half with a 18-3 run.  4 of the 5 starters for MG score in the run.  John Haakenson 7 points in the run with 3 other starters also chipping in.  47-32 Crimson with about 11 minutes left.  Fitzgerald Wreh with 2 FTs and a steal for 2 to get the lead back down to 8 with 7 minutes left.  Haakenson drifts to the left corner for a 3 to keep the lead at 10.  

Logan Kinsey scores inside for SLP, MG misses a front end.  Then Trey Johnston fouled and we get a Maple Grove technical to boot.  Johnson makes the bonus free throws and 1 of the 2 technicals.  Kinsey cashes in the possession with a putback.  In a flash, the MG lead is down to 55-52 with just over 3 min left. If that wasn't bad enough, there was a train wreck under the rim on the play.  Caden Boettcher comes up bloody and won't return.  Big loss for Maple Grove there.

The mess is cleaned up on one end, but not on the offensive end.  Maple Grove misses a front end and turns it over 4 straight times.  Spring Lake Park converts those into a Skelly free throw and a post bucket to tie the game.  But they miss 2 FTs with 27.7 left that could have given them the lead.  They get 1 last chance after the 4th turnover but no good and we'll play OT tied at 55.

Spring Lake Park patient to start the OT.   They find Thomsen for a backdoor cut and the foul for a 3 point play.  Maple Grove misses 2 free throws but they get the 2nd miss back and score.  Skelly counters with a layup on the other end with 45 seconds left. Maple Grove back the other way and they get an opening inside for a bucket and the foul.  But the free throw is no good.   Maple Grove still down 1 with 35 seconds left.  But just like regulation, SLP misses 2 FTs late.  Maple Grove 1 last chance with 14 seconds left.  Ball stripped away (or a foul depending on your allegiance) and they don't get a look at all.  Spring Lake Park wins 60-59 in overtime.

Post Game
Maple Grove lose their 3rd in a row to fall to 8-7 overall.  This game was a non-conference game so they'll remain 1 game in front of Spring Lake Park in the league standings.  Jon Haakenson leads Maple Grove with 17 points.  Very balanced scoring behind him with Terence Anthony-Larmouth scoring 9 points.  3 others chip in with 8 points.  This loss makes you pull your hair out.  Up 15 with about 10 min left and lose.  5 turnovers, an ill-advised technical and 2 missed front ends in the last 7 possessions of regulation.  The Crimson finish the league schedule by hosting Coon Rapids on Saturday.

After losing 5 out of 6 games (3 of those by a total of 5 points), Spring Lake Park has now won 3 in a row.  They'll host Armstrong on Saturday.  The Panthers end up with 3 players in double figures.  Kaleb Skelly with 14 to top the list.  Peyton Thomsen with 3 important 3s in the 1st half and the 3 point play for the lead in OT.  He finishes with 13 points.  Fitzgerald Wreh adds 12 points via 8-8 FTs.  Maple Grove able to attack their press in the middle early, but SLP adjusted.  But more of the 21 Maple Grove turnovers were unforced errors.  

Its an important win for Spring Lake Park as they battle with Osseo for homecourt in the section 5AAAA 4 vs 5 game.  Osseo with the head to head win and 1 up in the loss column in the league standings though.  But Osseo has 2 with Champlin Park left including tonight and a rematch with Armstrong who already beat them by 18.  Maple Grove probably locked into the 2 seed behind Brainerd in 8AAAA with the loss.

The Pack Rumbles on

A good late season non-conference matchup as neighbors St. Croix Lutheran and South St. Paul get together.  South St. Paul comes in at #4 and St. Croix Lutheran at #9 in this week class AAA poll.  A hot start for St. Croix Lutheran early as they hit their 1st 4 3s from 4 different players.  That helps them take a 20-9 lead midway thru the 1st half.  Owen Bushaw 2 and the hack to finish that run. 

SCL's top scoring threat Zach Longueville on the bench with 2 fouls after just 4 minutes.  So he doesn't see much of that lead.  South St. Paul finally revs up their high powered offense.  Devin Newsome coast to coast for a bucket.  Then he'll hit a straight away 3.  SSP star PG Alonzo Dodd dunks a turnover and the lead is gone.  Tied at 20. 

SSP keeps rolling Shawn West-Zimpel for 3.  Marquise Gleb goes over 1000 points for his career earlier in the night. He adds 2 buckets here and scores off a turnover.  Only 1 bucket for SCL until frosh Jaden Neish knocks down a halfcourt 3 to beat the halftime buzzer.  The Packers run is 25-3 after falling behind by 11.  They lead 34-26 at the half.

South St. Paul quickly opens that lead in the 2nd half to almost 20.  St. Croix Lutheran never seriously threatens again as the lead never gets back to single digits.  South St. Paul remains undefeated at 13-0 on the season.  St. Croix Lutheran falls to 9-5 but that includes 2 losses to DeLaSalle and 1 to Richfield (who they then beat in the follow up meeting).  St. Croix Lutheran visits St. Peter on Saturday.  South St. Paul has the big rematch with #9AAAA Tartan on Saturday afternoon.  SSP won the 1st meeting in overtime 70-69.

Interesting that SSP has started slow in all 3 games I've seen them play this season. Keeping them out of the paint is so hard.  But if you can keep them out of transition, that's a big part of the battle.  St. Croix Lutheran turnovers were a major factor in the 1st half run.  But when they didn't turn it over, they generally got good looks if they were patient.  That's a great strategy against a high-octane team like SSP to make them defend for a bit.  I would expect that this result would likely lock down the top 3 seeds in section 3AAA.  Hard to see SSP falling out of that 1 spot now.  That section always seems to seed really early as well.  So I'll guess that the SCL vs Columbia Heights game is after the seeding and possibly even the Columbia Heights vs Richfield game on the 10th.

Red Hot Royals

Prologue
A whole truckload of quality games on the Tuesday night schedule.  I'll do the #1AAA Minnehaha vs #1AA Waseca game for my own viewing since we've already done a ton of Minnehaha here this sesaon.  Instead let's go to the Suburban East where the top 2 teams in the league get together.  Its #10AAA Mounds View at home vs Woodbury.  The 1st meeting was one of Mounds View's many close wins this season as they won on the road by 4.  Woodbury hasn't lost since.

Game Time
The teams trade 7-0 runs to start the game.  Woodbury opens with 3 easy buckets including a 3.  Ryan Edelman 2 buckets and its 12-11 Mounds View at the 11:35 mark.  Dylan Wheeler picks up his 2nd foul for Mounds View and he'll sit just after that.  The teams trade triples as we stay close.  19-17 Woodbury at that point.  Then Blake Rohrer heats up for Woodbury.  He'll convert a turnover to push the lead to 4.  Wheeler back with the 2 fouls scores, makes 2 FTs and a triple for 7 straight Mustangs points.  Rohrer counters that with 3 of his 4 triples in the half.  35-30 Woodbury at the break.

Woodbury adds the 1st 7 points of the 2nd half to quickly stretch the lead to double figures.  Wheeler with a pair of stop and pop jumpers.  Then a steal for a bucket and a drive that he converts into 1 of 2 free throws.  That cuts the Woodbury lead to 46-42 with 8:15 left.  Rohrer with a couple more buckets as Woodbury scores the next 6 to push the lead back to 52-42 with about 6:20 left.  Then Kobe Kirk is fouled for bonus FTs and a technical on Woodbury to boot.  Kirk makes both ends of the bonus, both technicals and then is fouled in the post and he adds both of those free throws too.  Woodbury turns it over twice and Evan Kim hits a 3.  Woodbury gets a stop and Kirk fouled again with 3:48 left and he's not leaving any freebies behind.  53-52 Mounds View takes the lead after an 11-0 run.  Kirk 8-8 FTs in the run.  

Woodbury finally rights the ship.  Brad Cimperman strong to the rack.  He converts the lefty finish and is fouled for a 3 point play.  Mounds View a pair of misses.  We go under 2 min and with the ball and a 2 point Woodbury lead, Mounds View has to foul.  Devin Padelford makes both ends but Kirk counters with 2 more free throws.  Woodbury misses a front end with 48.4 left.  That gives Mounds View a chance to tie down 2.  But a hurried left corner 3 is no good.  Cimperman makes both ends of the bonus with 22 seconds left to make it a 4 point game.  Woodbury wins 60-55.

Post Game
#10AAAA Mounds View loses their 2 game in last 3 outings.  They fall to 12-2 in the Suburban East.  But they remain 1 game in front Woodbury for the league title.  Mustangs were 6-0 in games decided by 6 points or less coming in.  Dylan Wheeler 19 points to lead the scoring chart.  Kobe Kirk with 16 on 12-12 from the foul line.  Only 2 field goals for him was a big factor in this one.  Not much offense beyond those 2.  Park of Cottage Grove visits on Friday.  A trip to East Ridge looms next Wednesday as the other big obstacle to an outright league crown.

Woodbury wins their 10th in a row to improve to 11-3.  Blake Rohrer with 16 of his 20 points in the 1st half to lead the Royals.  Brad Cimperman with 12 of his 18 in the 2nd half including 5 critical points in the stretch run.  Despite not having a post presence they aren't a bombs away outshoot you from 3 team.  They still get plenty of paint action with their dribble drive system.  25 of their 41 shots in the paint.  Add in an economical  6-15 from 3 and you have good offense.  Woodbury hosts Irondale on Friday and then a tough trip to CDH on Monday.  That CDH game will have a large say in who gets the top seed in 4AAAA.

Czar's law improves to 80-16 with Woodbury taking the EFG win.  Mounds View only 5-20 from 3.  Good job by Woodbury getting out to shooters.  Turnovers and free throws were largely a wash in terms of attempts.  But thanks to Kirk's 12-12 Mounds View ended up 20-23 compared to 14-20 for Woodbury.  Offensive rebound totals equal but that factor goes to Woodbury with fewer misses to grab.

Star Gazing

Prologue
A busy final 2 weeks of the regular season.  We sneak in a quick trip non-conference game as Minneapolis South and their talented freshmen visit Holy Angels.

Game Time
Slow start for both offenses in this one.  Holy Angels ice cold and South turning it over.  Emmett Johnson rips from Jerome Williams in a fun guard matchup.  Johnson takes that the other way for a bucket.  7-5 AHA 6 minutes in.  Aiden Smith with a 3 point play.  Holy Angels expands the lead to 17-13 at the 6:30 mark.  South switches to a 1-2-2 zone and turns the tables.  9-2 Tigers run ends the half.  Anthony Martin out on the break for a dunk late in the half.  South leads 22-19 at the half.

South keeps the momentum going in the 2nd half.  Williams with 2 right wing bombs.  DeWayne Givens with a 3 point play.  Williams adds another bucket.  33-21 South leads after a 20-4 run across halftime.  Chiang Ring with a block on 1 end and a dunk for a 3 point play on the other.  38-26 South with 10:27 left.  

South getting careless with the ball and Holy Angels takes advantage.  Cam Holter converts 1 turnover.  Bryce Boyd with a triple off another turnover.  Williams counters with a 3 on a Holy Angels turnover.  Ring tip dunks a miss with 5:25 left.  South still up 48-38.  Rob Issa gets his big 2nd half going for AHA.  Along with Holter, he converts a turnover.  Then Issa for 3 from the right corner to cut the lead to 49-47 with 4:10 left.  Ring stops the bleeding with a dunk to push the lead back to 4.

Holter from the left corner for 3.  Then its Boyd from the right wing for 3.  South turnover and its Boyd to Issa for 2 with 90 seconds left.  57-53 AHA after a 19-5 run.  Holy Angels 2-6 from the line in the last minute with 2 missed front ends.  Givens with a couple of buckets for South.  Issa makes 1 final FT and Boyd taps in the miss of the 2nd for the final margin.  Holy Angels wins 65-59

Post Game
Minneapolis South falls to 4-5 overall.  Jerome Williams leads the way with 21 points.  That included 4 makes from deep.  Chiang Ring 11 points, a bunch of boards and a mitt full of blocks showing his impact inside.  DeWayne Givens chips in with 9 points.  Their length in the 1-2-2 zone was effective as AHA never really got comfortable against it.  Only exception was Emmett Johnson having a couple of moments playing out of the middle of it.  South visits #8AAA DeLaSalle on Thursday.  Then a fun league showdown with Edison next Monday.

After a 2-7 start with the only wins over Brooklyn Center, AHA has rebounded to win 3 out of 4.  3 more home games coming up including Benilde-St. Margaret's on Thursday.  Cam Holter got the 3 point stroke working with 3 triples.  He finishes with a team high 18 points.  16 of those in the 2nd half including all 3 of his triples.  Emmett Johnson adds 16 points split across both halves.  Rob Issa off the bench with 12 of his 13 points in the 2nd half.  Critical buckets for him in the AHA comeback.  Quiet night for Bryce Boyd with 11 points and 3 triples.  He came with 3 important plays late with his go ahead 3, an assist to Issa and a steal.

Holy Angels starts the game with a wind chill warning inducing 8-42 from the field.  They make up a 12 point deficit by shooting a blistering 17-26 (65.4%) the rest of the way.  But that doesn't save Czar's Law which falls to 80-16 (83.3%).  But they win everything else.  They crash the offensive board and South turns it over 25 times.  That allows AHA to get 16 more shots and make up the poor shooting.  AHA didn't help themselves with 8-19 shooting from the line so it wasn't just the last minute at the line.
