Tri-Metro saints to overtime

Prologue
Off to the 2nd year of Bandas Gymnasium at St. Agnes for an early 530 varsity doubleheader in Frogtown.  Its the St. Anthony boys and girls visiting for east division play in the Tri-Metro.  Oversized hot dog well worth it.  More Barq's Root Beer to wash it down.  And no bull folks, the St. Agnes mascot (a Benny The Bull from the Chicago Bulls clone) was in the house.  A teacher schools all the students in knockout at halftime.  Let's go oldies for today's tune.

Game Time:
Rhys Langums productive early with 2 hoops and an offensive rebound for a free throw.  Brandon Plasch productive inside for St. Agnes on this night converting layups or putbacks. His bunny cuts the St. Anthony lead to 8-6 at 13:40.  Then Gary Smith sits at 12:47 with his 2nd foul.  Big loss for the Aggies.  Langums converts a turnover into a dunk to end a 7-0 run and push the lead to 9.  Then an 8-0 run with a pair of triples to push the lead to 25-12 with over 4 minutes left in the half.  St. Agnes counters with an 11-0 run to end the half over those 4 minutes.  Plasch with 2 putbacks to end that run.  25-23 St. Anthony at the break.

Langums with a hoop.  Frosh Tait Nelson converts a turnover.  Langums with a block on 1 end and finishes on the other.  36-28 Huskies with 13:13 left.  Darius Lopez picks up the St. Agnes offense.  he puts back his own miss, banks in a hoop and makes bonus free throws.  Plasch adds another putback in the run as well.  All of that counters a Langums 3 point play.  We're back to even at 39 with 8:35 left.  St. Anthony looks to put the game out of reach with Aaron Smith going backdoor for a reverse and 2 free throws.  Langums with a free throw and Tait Nelson coast to coast for 2 free throws.  Langums finishes the 9-0 run with a hoop at the 5:15 mark.  St. Anthony in control 48-39.

But its another half that they don't finish.  Plasch with yet another putback.  Aaron Smith makes 2 free throws and the lead is still 8 with under 2 minutes left and the ball.  But its Gary Smith with a steal and 3 point play.  Lopez with a steal for another bucket.  Marcus Johnson for 3 after 2 more Aaron Smith free throws and the lead is down to 2 with 50 seconds left.  St. Anthony turns it over again but the Aggies miss a layup to tie.  They get it back and a Johnson drive and shot gets stuck between the rim and backboard.  That means we go to the possession arrow and it goes to St. Agnes.  Almost feel like its destiny to score now  They take time with 18.3 left to draw up a play and its Plasch on the BLOB for a wide open layup.  St. Anthony pushes and can't score.  We'll go to overtime tied at 52.

Its Johnson with a pretty drive to start the OT.  That gives the Aggies their 1st lead since 2-0.  Plasch with a putback countered by an Aaron Smith 3 for a 1 point St. Anthony lead.  Lopez with 2 free throws before a Langums freebie.  58 all.  Gary Smith fouls out with 1:04 left in OT and Dan Carpenter converts the 2 free throws for a 60-58 St. Anthony lead.  Then Langums with the rejection of Lopez and he makes 1 of 2 free throws.  St. Anthony grabs that rebound.  They turn it over but get it right back.  That's the last chance the Aggies get to tie as Langums makes 2-4 free throws along with 2 from Aaron Smith to seal it.  St. Anthony hangs on to win 65-60 in overtime.

Post Game
Darius Lopez leads St. Agnes with 21 points.  He scored 15 of those after halftime.  Brandon Plasch working hard inside as he scored 14 points.  All of those on putbacks or dump offs.  Gary Smith sat the last 13 minutes of the 1st half and finished with only 9 points.  Marcus Johnson good bench minutes as well with 7 points.  Its a dribble drive offense that they really attack out of.  But they were very hesitant to shoot the 3 which allows teams to back off.  St. Agnes falls to 7-10 overall, 1-6 in the Tri-Metro.  5 of those losses by single digits.  The upcoming schedule is brutal with trips to Columbia Heights on Friday and St. Paul Washington on Monday.  Then St. Croix Lutheran visits next Thursday and a trip to New Life Academy.

St. Anthony improves to 14-4 overall, 3-3 in the Tri-Metro.  Rhys Langums with another big game.  27 points (11-17 FTs), 12 rebounds and 4 blocks on my sheet.  While he doesn't like his left hand, he's surprisingly effective going right and spinning left and still scoring with right hand.  Aaron Smith adds 3 triples and 8-8 FTs for 19 points.  Rest of the roster besides Langums was 14-14 from the charity stripe.  Those 25-31 FTs dwarf the 10-13 FTs for St. Agnes.  Their man to man scramble traps at halfcourt also showed some effectiveness.  The Huskies have a pair of competitive league games coming up as they go to Brooklyn Center on Friday and host Columbia Heights next Tuesday.

2017 Border Battle Thoughts

Saturday marked the 11th Annual Border Battle between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Solid crowds on hand all day.  That included a very nice crowd of red to see Wisconsin recruits matchup.  Here are some of the sights and sounds.

Game 1: #3 D5 Marshfield Columbus 96 #7A Springfield 83
Columbus couldn't get anything going in the 1st 10 minutes but they were still able to hang around to within 22-18.  Then they changed the game with a 2-3 halfcourt zone trap.  They ran off 11 straight using that defense to reclaim the lead.  Leading scorer Hunter Schultz got hot in tandem with that and Columbus would jump out to an 11 point lead at the half.  Isaac Fink had a big first half for Springfield but his teammate Tanner Vogel was held to 2 points.  They regroup in the 2nd half and rally to tie the game at 62 with 8:50 left.  Columbus would hit 4 straight 3s to push the lead to 10.  The lead was down to 6 but Schultz puts the game away with 2 more 3s and a bucket.  Hunter Schultz finishes with 30 points, Tyler Feurlinger 27, Nick Malovrh 19.  They combine for 11 of the 13 Dons triples.  Columbus very good offensive team in their dribble drive system.  Sophomore Isaac Fink leads Springfield with 30 points along with 6 rebounds and 7 assists.  Tanner Vogel had 19 of his 21 in the 2nd half.

Game 2: #1AA Minnehaha Academy 81 Prescott 73
Minnehaha with 3 steals for dunks or layups in the 1st 3 minutes.  JoVanni Bickham adds 2 3s as Minnehaha jumps out to a 16-7 lead.  After a rought start, Prescott star Owen Hamilton (N Illinois commit) would heat up with an inside hoop, dunk and smooth 3 to pull the Cardinals within 26-20 at the 7:30 mark.  Minnehaha would go on a 14-2 run to bust the game open.  Kaden Johnson with the 1st 8 points of the run.  That would propel the Redhawks to a 47-25 halftime lead.  Lorenzo Smith with his 3rd and 4th bombs of the day and a Bickham putback and the rout is on 63-37.  But Prescott didn't know that.  They hit a 3 then its Hamilton to the reverse and a 3 point play.  Bickham with the 3 off the UCLA screen and makes bonus free throws after the 5th on Hamilton with 2:51 to go.  Minnehaha up 75-63.  But in the blink of an eye its Petey Brookshaw with a hoop and then he steals an inbounds after a Brian Tayson 3 and scores.  75-70 with 2 minutes left after an 11-2 Prescott run.  Minnehaha takes 2 quick shots and misses.  Brookshaw has a 3 go around and out with a minute left.  Jalen Suggs with a very quiet day as he picked up his 4th foul with 15 minutes left.  But he makes 4 bonus free throws and has a steal for a dunk in the last 46.4 to put the game away.  JaVonni Bickham with one of the best games I've seen from him.  He finishes with 30 points and 4 triples.  Freshman Kaden Johnson with 14 of his 18 in the 1st half.  Jalen Suggs finishes with 14 points (5-14 FG).  Owen Hamilton 27 points and 9 rebounds.  Petey Brookshaw 16 points and 11 rebounds as well for Prescott.

Game 3: #10AAAA Tartan 80 Whitefish Bay 53
Siena commit Jordan Horn hot right out of the gate as he scores the 1st 8 for Tartan  Whitefish Bay would go up 14-12 but all Tartan after that.  Horn with a fadeaway and 4 free throws.  Then Noah Whalen and Kingston Myles hit 3s to finish the 12-0 Tartan run.  The lead would get down to 7 but Tartan kept pouring it on.  Horn another 3, 3 3s from Jordan Thompson and another Horn triple.  46-29 Tartan at the half.  Horn with a 3 and a driving hoop to bookend a 9-0 run in the 2nd half.  60-33 with 15 minutes left   Nothing of note after that.  Jordan Horn finishes with 25 points, 20 in the 1st half.  He nailed 5 threes.  Nice minutes for Damien Goergen off the bench inside, 11 points for him.  Xavier Johnson with 13 points to lead Whitefish Bay.

Game 4: #7AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall 71 #3 D1 Stevens Point 68
Beau Rosenthal with 10 of the 1st 12 for Stevens Point.  The Panthers would open a 24-16 lead.  CDH would get 2 hoops each from Jake Prince and Ryan Larson in an 8-0 run to tie it.  Stars Daniel Oturu and Joey Hauser trade the last 4 buckets of the half.  35-32 CDH at the half.  Oturu with a putback and fouled.  Then he scores on an inbounds and a swat of Hauser.  That turns into a triple on the other end.  Ryan Larson with a steal for 2.  Oturu with a tip dunk.  50-38 CDH with 12:40 left after the 11-0 run.  Hauser tries to bring the Panthers back with 2 3s and a pair of free throws.  63-58 CDH with 2:34 left.  Oturu with bonus free throws and a dunk.  Hauser with a jumper and a 3 at the buzzer but the comeback falls short.  Daniel Oturu with 30 points, 10 boards and 4 blocks on my sheet.  He rejected Hauser at the rim on now fewer than 3 occasions.  Joey Hauser with 22 points and 11 rebounds on my sheet.  But he didn't shoot it well from the floor and didn't have one of his better games. Ryan Larson chips in with 16 points for CDH and his quickness was a menace.  Drew Blair added 17 points for Stevens Point.

Game 5: #1AAA De La Salle 97 Kaukauna 65
This game was over almost at the tip.  Dom Bledsoe and Tyrell Terry for 3.  Goanar Mar converts a turnover into a layup.  Gabe Kalscheur finishes the 13-0 start with a 3 of his own.  The 3s keep coming.  Bledsoe in transition, Kalscheur off an offensive board and Mar.  Sage Booker runs for a 3 point play.  Kalscheur drives and scores and Bledsoe cuts for a layup.  33-12 DLS after a 10-0 run.  No number of timeouts for Kaukauna helps.  The lead is 27 at half and Kaukauna doesn't have a 2 point field goal.  De La Salle cruises from there.  Gabe Kalscheur with 21 of his 25 in the 1st half, 3 triples.  Goanar Mar adds 21 and 9 rebounds for the Islanders.  Eric Carl with 5 3s on his way to 23 points to lead Kaukauna.  Jordan McCabe with a forgettable 19 point day on 5-24 shooting and a handful of turnovers.

Game 6: #3AAAA Lakeville North 98 #1 D1 La Crosse Central 83
The showcase of Wisconsin recruits did not disappoint.  Both would have big nights but it was the balance from Lakeville North that made the difference.  Panthers have 5 others go for 9 or more points.  Central with only 1 other player with more than 9 points.  Kobe King would go bonkers with 49 points and 14 boards on 17-28 FGs.  That included 21 of the last 28 points plus an assist on a 3 in that.  But 19 points was too big of a hole to dig out of.  Nate Reuvers with 33 points (20 1st half), 8 rebounds and 4 blocks on 14-22 FGs.  Ethan Igbanugo with 14 of his 18 after the half along with great defense.  Bailey Kale held to 11 for Central.  After King, the rest of the Central roster shot 12-35 from the floor.   Lakeville North shot a ridiculous 41-68 from the floor including 70% from 2.

Game 7: #5AAAA Apple Valley 66 #10 D1 Milwaukee Riverside 46
Apple Valley couldn't buy an outside shot early on.  That would allow Riverside to jump out to an 16-11 lead.  The Eagles would try anybody and everybody against the 2-3 zone.  Mohamed Kone with a pair of hoops.  Ely Hendrickson with a hoop and a triple to give Apple Valley their only lead of the 1st half.  But Riverside scores the last 4 of the half to take a 28-25 lead to halftime.  The 2nd half is all Apple Valley.  Hendrickson with 3 bombs and Spencer Rolland with a layup. Then Tre Jones with the swat and rebound.  He pushes it and finds Rolland for another layup.  That great sequence is the highlight in the 21-4 run to start the half.  Terrence doesn't score in the 2nd half until inside the 7 minute mark.  He adds another hoop to keep Riverside within 48-39 with 5:40 left.  Kone and Jones score.  Nathan Macho with a 3 point play and 2 more Kone hoops. Macho puts back a miss.  Jones misses the front end but Riverside is asleep and Rolland puts back that miss.  That 15-0 run resolves any doubts.  Tre Jones cold shooting but finishes with 12 points, 10 boards and 10 assists.  Mohamed Kone and Eli Hendrickson with 14 points each to lead the Eagles.  Kone has been a revelation for the Eagles this season.  Outside of Ely Hendrickson, Apple Valley was 1-16 from 3.  Terrence Lewis finishes with 23 points and 8 rebounds to lead Riverside.  The rest of the Riverside roster shoots 11-30.

Big Cats in the City

Prologue
Its another night in the city as Minneapolis South hosts St. Paul Como Park.  Light crowd on hand for the game.  Kimbo Slice works the JV game (AAU ref who grew out a fantastic beard) but sadly doesn't get the varsity game.  Coke is the beverage of choice tonight.  The South cheerleaders don't even get to stand on the court anywhere. They are relegated to a section of the bleachers behind the South bench.  Quality music during the breaks.  That included this old hit.

Game Time:
South with 3 players out due to concussions, yikes.  South makes the opening 3 but then gives up the next 13.  Kyrin Woodard with 7 of those including a drive, layup on a turnover and a 3 point play.  South keeps the margin at 20-11 at the 8 minute mark.  Then a 10-1 Cougars run to open it up.  Woodard coast to coast and trailed on a curl cut for a layup during that run.  Center Donald Ventrelli flying into the South bench and bleachers by the cheerleaders as well.  Thankfully he came out laughing.  Major trainwreck potential there.  That would put Como Park up 30-12 and finish Woodard's scoring for the night.  Como Park stays within 33-19 at the half.

South goes to youngsters in the 2nd half (played both JV only 1 half of varsity available).  Frosh Demarco Dowden with a layup off a nice zip pass thru the Como Park 1-2-2.  The Como Park lead down to 35-24 with 15 minutes left.  Como Park then runs away and hides with a 21-2 run that took 7 minutes in the middle of the half.  Trey Clark dunks a turnover and then a quality euro step done at full speed on the break.  He also converts another turnover by softly laying in a lob pass.  Soph Donn Ward scores, then stumbles and throws it in followed by a drive and dunk.  56-26 inside 5:30 to play and the rest is garbage time.  Como Park wins 64-44.

Post Game
Kevin Pellew with 2 late 3s to get to 9 points for the game to lead South.    Only 1 other player with more than 5.  With 3 players out, no shock that scoring was difficult.  They had open corner looks vs the Como Park 1-2-2 zone but made almost none of them.  Demetrius Gladney was the 1 guy who was able to get loose in the middle and made a couple of plays from there.  South falls to 4-14 overall.  They are 4-5 in the Minneapolis City.  They trek to Eden Prairie next week before playing their last 5 league games starting the following week.

Como Park improves to 6-10 overall.  They are 3-1 in the St. Paul City.  After a 6 game losing streak, the Cougars have now won 4 in a row.  They have a huge week in league play next week as they are at rival Central (3-0) and host Highland Park (2-1).  Trey Clark leads the Cougars with 15 points.  Kyrin Woodard with all 14 of his points in the 1st half.  They went to the 1-2-2 zone very early and it paid off.  South couldn't keep guys like Woodard out of the paint either.  Add in the conversion of turnovers and the Cougars win easily.

Rebels rumble with the Royals

Prologue
Another night at Hopkins as top ranked Champlin Park comes calling against the 6th ranked Royals.  Billy Crystal and Lou Brown (Manager in Major League) part of the 3 man officiating crew.  Good hot dog but the bun while wheat and good for my health was a bit on the stale side.  I had to go that route because the usual walking taco wasn't on tonight's menu, the horror!  The 1st appearance of Barq's Root Beer on the beverage ticker this season.  Root beer really runs up the calorie count.  The Mr Basketball committee was on hand.  Good timeout music including this classic.

Game Time:
Early on McKinley Wright dishing to anybody he can find.  That includes DJ Hunter on the break for a layup and for a 3.  4 quick assists and he buries a 3 for a 16-5 Rebels lead at 13:30.  Hopkins makes a comeback via Simon Wright with 2 hoops and a triple.  That 11-3 run cuts the Rebels lead to 21-20 at the 9:42 mark.  Champlin Park opens the lead with a 22-6 run out of that timeout.  Marcus Hill starts it with a hoop and a putback after a huge Theo John blocked shot.  McKinley Wright back in the game with 2 fouls to add 2 free throws and a transition 3.  Brian Smith 2 hoops and Josiah Strong finishes the run with a 3 on a great skip pass from Wright.  43-26 Rebels at 3:35.  But McKinley Wright picks up a cheap 3rd foul and sits the last 2:36.  Interesting decision to leave him in there after the lead expanded but it didn't backfire.  Hopkins scores the last 6 of the half to pull within 43-32 at the half.

Champlin Park scores the 1st 6 of the 2nd half to push the lead back to 17.  Frosh Blaise Beauchamp carrying the Hopkins offense with their 1st 8 points of the half.  Ish El-Amin with a pair of hoops as Hopkins cuts the lead to 56-44.  Then 2 quick fouls on center Joe Hedstrom and he's gone with 11:42 left.  Hill adds 6 in a row and Strong buries a 3 for a 9-0 run to push the lead to 65-44 with 9:55 left.  Beauchamp and Darryl Mayfield make back to back 3s to cut the margin to 13 with 3 minutes left.  But McKinley Wright closes the door for good with a hoop, 2 free throws and an exclamation point dunk.  The dunk gets him a technical too but the game is out of reach.  Champlin Park wins 99-79.

Post Game
Freshman Blaise Beauchamp leads Hopkins with 21 of his 23 in the 2nd half.  That included 5 triples.  Simon Wright with 20, Ish El-Amin with 19.  Zeke Nnaji was back in the lineup but sat the last 10 minutes as he still isn't 100%.  That meant Hopkins had to play small with Simon Wright in the middle for that stretch.  Hopkins again struggling with defending really good guard play.  Hopkins falls to 12-5 overall and they are 1-2 in the Lake Conference.  They travel to Minnetonka next Tuesday.

McKinley Wright approached or reached a triple double depending on your count.  He finished with 27 points and very close to the 10 rebound and 10 assists mark.  This was the most I've ever seen him look to distribute the ball and it was fun to watch.  Plus he made sure nothing crazy was going to happen at the end.  All 5 starters and their 1st reserve reach double figures.  Brian Smith, DJ Hunter and Josiah Strong combine for 42 points and 8 3s.  Marcus Hill and Theo John combine for 28 points on the front line.   Champlin Park has the luxury of using Marcus Hill and DJ Hunter to defend other teams top scorers and they had the assignments tonight vs Wright and El-Amin.  That gives McKinley Wright and Theo John extra freedom and rest on the defensive end.  No doubt that Champlin Park is the top team in AAAA right now.  Trips to Maple Grove and Totino-Grace along with home tilts versus De La Salle and Armstrong are on the horizon.  Champlin Park is now 14-0, 8-0 in the NW Suburban North.  They are at Coon Rapids tomorrow before hosting Anoka and Andover next week.

2017 Border Battle Preview

This season marks the 11th annual Wisconsin vs Minnesota Border Battle and the 7th straight one that I'll be attending.  Minnesota with a 34-23 edge in the all-time series thanks to winning 11 straight before SPASH knocked off Minnetonka in the finale last year.  Minnesota has won 16 straight games at home in the series going back to the 3rd game in 2011.  Wisconsin brings arguably their most talented field ever.  Minnesota may have its best senior class ever but the majority of the Minnesota stars in the event this year are not seniors which is interesting.

Game 1 (10:00): #3 D5 Marshfield Columbus Dons (13-0) vs #10A Springfield Tigers (13-1)
The Dons have lost the early game the last 2 years in this event.  They feature the high scoring guard duo of Hunter Schultz (26 PPG) and Tyler Fuerlinger (almost 22 PPG).  Fuerlinger went off in the 2nd half had a career high 32 vs Spring Grove in the Border Battle last year.  Springfield soph Isaac Fink has already passed the 1000 career points mark and is one of the top 2019 Minnesota kids not in the metro area.

Czar's Pick: Marshfield Columbus with too much firepower.

Game 2 (11:30): #7 D3 Prescott Cardinals (13-2) vs #1AA Minnehaha Redhawks (10-5)
7 foot Northern Illinois commit Owen Hamilton mans the middle for Prescott.  He averages 26, 13 and over 3 blocks a night.  Petey Brookshaw runs the point with 14 PPG.  1 of their 2 losses was a blowout to Farmington in the Hastings holiday tourney.  Minnehaha is loaded with young guards and its not just all-world PG Jalen Suggs (24.2 PPG).  Freshmen Kaden Johnson and Terry Lockett plus Johnson transfer Lorenzo Smith give them a ton of scoring on the wings.  But the Redhawks don't have a matchup for Hamilton in the middle.  Its a classic size vs speed matchup.   Suggs will definitely attack the rim looking to take bumps off Hamilton.  Look for forward Jovanni Bickham to also attack him off the bounce from the elbow area.

Czar's Pick: Minnehaha.  No answer for Jalen Suggs and they'll hit enough 3s.  But expect a big game from Hamilton as long as he stays out of foul trouble.

Game 3 (1:15): Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes (7-5) vs #10AAAA Tartan Titans (13-1)
The Blue Dukes are led by the duo of Xavier Johnson (18 PPG) and soph Demetrius Johnson (14.2 PPG).  They've played 2 good guard laden teams and lost those by 20 and 25 points respectively. Siena commit Jordan Horn leads a senior laden Tartan lineup with 17.4 PPG. Three other Titans average double figures including shooter Noah Whalen (12.2 PPG) and forward Joevon Walker (11.2 PPG).  Quality guard play on display should make for some fun plays.

Czar's Pick: Least compelling game of the day.  Tartan by double figures.

Game 4 (2:45): #3 D1 Stevens Point Panthers (11-1) vs #7AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders (9-4)
When these teams met at CDH in the Border Battle 2 years ago, SPASH suffered their only loss of their season in that game.  SPASH star Joey Hauser played in that game and is a top 50 junior nationally.  He just returned to the lineup last Friday after missing all season with a football injury.  His brother Sam is at Marquette.  Joey is a versatile big man who can handle and shoot while also taking over inside.  Fellow junior Drew Blair (22.1 PPG) has picked up the slack in his absence.  Hauser, a Michigan St target, going up against Gopher commit Daniel Oturu is a matchup to salivate over.  Oturu coming off a huge 33 pt, 15 rb, 7 blk performance vs Woodbury in front of coach Pitino last Friday.  He's listed at 18.5 PPG and a staggering 18.2 RPG. 3 other Raiders also average double figures.

Czar's Pick: SPASH in a fairly close one.

Game 5 (4:15): HM Kaukauna Ghosts (7-5) vs #1 3A De La Salle Islanders (11-2)
Don't be fooled by the fact that the Galloping Ghosts are unranked.  Kaukauna is the defending Division 2 state champion with star PG Jordan McCabe (returning.  He's committed to West Virginia and if there's 1 player to see all day, he may be it.  He averages 25.1 PPG and is an electric passer with a flare to his game.  Sniper Adam Smith is out again with a foot injury and that changes the team dramatically.   A definite contrast of styles as the Islanders will try to keep the Ghosts from galloping up and down the floor.  George Mason commit Goanar Mar (23.1 PPG) is having a great season for De La Salle.  The Islanders will need a big game from Gabe Kalscheur (16.5 PPG) as well.  While De La Salle does switch a ton, it will be interesting to see how much Mar has to guard McCabe.

Czar's Pick: De La Salle.  Too much defense and its easier to slow tempo than it is to speed it up.

Game 6 (6:00): #1 D2 La Crosse Central Red Raiders (11-1) vs #3AAAA Lakeville North Panthers (11-1)
Its the Wisconsin recruit showdown between Kobe King and Nate Reuvers.  The Czar's alma mater is rolling right now as one of the best teams regardless of class in Wisconsin. While they lost both games badly to Kaukauna last year including the state semifinal, they beat the Ghosts 92-81 over Christmas.  They also beat previous #1 Waunakee 10 days ago.  Plus a 26 point win over ranked Onalaska who knocked off Minnehaha.  But Central is more than the 26.6 PPG from King.  Lefty guard Bailey Kale (18.2 PPG) is committed to Minnesota-Duluth and can fill it up as well.  Freshman twins Jonathon and Jordan Davis are the highly regarded sons of former La Crosse Catbird Mark Davis when Flip Saunders was there.

Meanwhile Lakeville North continues to be an elite level team.  Nate Reuvers is having another huge season (27.1 PPG, 11.5 RPG) and Central doesn't really have a good matchup for him.  I expect to see King on him and I think he can handle that matchup.  Ethan Igbanugo (12 PPG) should see plenty of time guarding King and Kale.  Soph Tyler Wahl is a secondary key to this one.  If he plays well I like Lakeville North's chances.

Czar's Pick: Is there a question on this one?  Its my alma mater so I can't go against them.  Most compelling and best game of the day. The chess match of who guards Reuvers and King will be very interesting to watch.

Game 7 (7:30): #10 D1 Milwaukee Riverside Tigers (9-4) vs #5AAAA Apple Valley Eagles (11-2)
The preseason #1 in Wisconsin gets the night game.  Riverside is the 2 man band of Iowa State commit Terrence Lewis (almost 29 PPG) and strong guard Carlos Curtis (18.4 PPG).  Lewis is a top 150 nationally ranked kid committed to Iowa State and put on a show with 44 points in the season opener that I saw.  Woodbury took them to the woodshed 10 days ago in La Crosse but Lewis was out due to suspension.   They are very unwilling to take outside shots (except Lewis) and would rather attack the rim.  I would expect to see some Curtis vs Tre Jones.  Jones averaging 21 pts, 9 rbs, 8 ast per game.  The 2nd guy could be a different guy on any given night.  Apple Valley without a good matchup to guard Lewis but they'll be able to give help off of other guys.

Czar's Pick: Lewis goes for 25 points or more.  Apple Valley hits at least 10 triples and wins by double figures as Riverside continues their bad stretch the last 2 years vs Minnesota teams.

FINAL PREDICTION: Minnesota wins the Border Battle 4-3

Wisconsin raids the border

Prologue
Its Border Battle week and I'll preview of that tomorrow night as I won't be doing a game.  But I get an early border battle game as Hudson visits Simley.  Hudson is second in the Big Rivers, the big school league across the border.  They have 8 games against Minnesota opponents this year.  Crazy.  They've already split with St. Thomas (win) and Hastings (loss) from the Metro East with a February game against North St. Paul on the schedule as well.  Blah hot dog and gatorade tonight on the concessions menu.  Simley always has quality music so we take this classic from a timeout.

Game Time:
Defense was not at a premium in this one.  Leading scorers for Hudson Jamie Wirth and Garrett Hendricks again carrying the Raidres offense.  DeAndre Smith is an athletic bowling ball for Simley and he's carrying the Simley offense.  Mitch Monson with good bench minutes in the 1st half for Hudson as well.  He hits a pair of jumpers to keep the lead at 10.  Smith with 7 late for Simley.  Wirth counters those with a hoop and a late 3.  42-32 Hudson at the break.

Hudson starts the half strong.  Post Sam Gerard with 2 free throwa nd 2 hoops to push the lead to 13.  A 10-3 run after that would grow the lead to 54-38 with 13:32 left.  Hendricks converts a turnover into a layup and Wirth buries a 3 as Hudson grows the lead to 69-49 with 8:30 to go.  The rout appears to be on so Hudson starts going deeper into their bench. Simley quickly buries 2 3s via Isaiah Robinson and Sam Vujovich.  That cuts the lead to 15 inside 6:30 to play and the Hudson starters are back at the scorers table.

Simley gradually cuts into the lead as neither team can stop fouling in the 2nd half.  Andrew Johnson with good 2nd half bench minutes for Simley. He makes a layup and 2 free throws to get the lead down to 9 with 2:27 left.  Smith would add a putback, a 3 point play to cut it to 8 and a late 3, but the lead was too much for Simley to overcome.  Hudson wins 95-85.  The teams shot a combined 55 free throws in the 2nd half.  By my count 27 of those came in the last 3:16.

Post Game
Simley's DeAndre Smith continues to be a problem for opponents.  He leads all scorers with 34 points.  Jake Binley struggled with his outside shot but like almost everyone on this night, he made a living at the line.  He scored 20 points via 10 free throws. Sam Vujovich with 3 triples and 11 points to also reach double figures.  Simley's transition defense and defense of the side pick and roll were what did them in on this night.

Hudson improves to 3-3 in their Minnesota tour this season.  Their head coach was the sophomore coach (I believe) at South St. Paul last year.  Jamie Werth with 25 points to lead the Raiders.  Garrett Hendricks adds 24.  There's youth in the lineup with 3 sophomores playing and 2 of them starting.  They are at Highland Park in 2 weeks and then end that same week at North St. Paul.  That will complete their 8 game Minnesota tour with 6 of them here.

Saturday with Saints and Nuns

Now that we're to the midpoint of the 2016-17 season, that means Saturday becomes a fairly quiet day on the schedule.  I see 1 game in person and then take in Bucky vs Minnesota and then another pair of teams I haven't seen online.  Quality pizza for the afternoon session with pizza.  A student dressed as a nun in the front row for the night session.

Game 1: Farmington at St. Anthony
Too warm for the Huskies to be out but oh well.  Rhys Langums starting strong inside for St. Anthony.  Aaron Smith adds a 3 and frosh PG Tait Nelson adds his own 3 and picks a pocket for 2 more.  21-14 St. Anthony 6 minutes in.  Sam Wilson carrying the Farmington offense.  The lead gets down to 5 before a 14-4 run opens the lead to 15.  That's down to 11 at the half.  Adam Weed with a 3 and Farmington has the lead down to 54-53 with 11:30 left.  But St. Anthony goes on a 10-0 run to open the lead back up.  Wilson with a hoop and 3 free throws before another Weed 3.  71-66 St. Anthony inside 6 left.  But too much Langums.  He converts a 3 point play, puts back a miss and makes 2 free throws to keep the lead at 9.  The rest of the way is free throws.  St. Anthony wins 93-78.   Rhys Langums finishes with 33 points inside.  Aaron Smith knocks down 6 3s on his way to 23 points.  Frosh PG Tait Nelson with 20.  Crafty lefty Sam Wilson with 3 triples and 31 points to lead Farmington.  Tough stretch for Farmington losing to Lakeville North on Tuesday, at the buzzer in OT to Tre Jones and Apple Valley and then the quick turnaround for this one.  St. Anthony makes 11 3s with the inside 33 from Langums.  That's a tough combination and they have a toughness to them.  Farmington playing 4 sophs and 2 juniors with Wilson as they build for the future.

Game 2: Prior Lake at #9AAAA New Prague
This is the start of the Hwy 13 series.  Next year when it moves to Prior Lake, they'll play all day with the grade school levels too.  Love that idea.  Both teams have wins at Delano by similar margins so this should be good.  The shot clock was in use but New Prague brings back memories of the old slowdown De La Salle teams with Jalen Jaspers.  New Prague would use a 9-0 first half run to take a 17-9 lead.  Trent West and Casey Gustina would bring Prior Lake back to within 21-20 at the half.  West with a pair of bombs as Prior Lake opens up a 33-27 lead.  West scores in the post countered by Zach Hanson driving.  Then its West for 3 countered by 2 Hanson free throws.  42-41 Prior Lake outside of 6 minutes to play.  Alex Preston with a drive, a 3 and a layup as Prior Lake opens the lead to 8.  New Prague makes 2 late 3s.  West at the line with 10.2 left up 2 for the bonus.  His 1st free throw is back iron, bounces up and falls in.  He also makes the 2nd so make the final New Prague bucket irrelevant.  Prior Lake wins 51-49.   Trent West impressive with 4 3s and 22 points to lead Prior Lake.  Zach Hanson playing well inside for New Prague as he finishes with 18.  Alex Preston with 7 of his 10 points in crunch time for the Lakers.  Prior Lake's 2-3 zone effective despite some good action by New Prague with the posts in the short corners screening.

Oturu leads CDH to Suburban East Lead

Prologue
Back to #7AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall for their Suburban East showdown with Woodbury.  Both teams come into the night undefeated in league play.  Solid crowd on hand though I didn't see anything outstanding on jersey night.  The usual hot dog and Coke keeps my waistline happy.  The CDH pep band is in the house with excellent old school music.  That included this local classic.

Song of the Day:  Lipps, Inc - Funkytown (courtesy of CDH pep band)

Game Time:
Woodbury junior Michael Jones picking up the slack for Jeremiah Coddon.  He shows off a super quick release as he scores the 1st 11 points for the Royals.  That included 3 pure triples.  Add in a Jake West 3 point play to conclude the 12-2 Woodbury run.  14-9 Royals at 11:41.  Meanwhile Daniel Oturu with 7 of the 9 CDH points, all inside.  Jacob Prince then begins to pound the offensive glass 3 field goals and 2 free throws on 4 offensive rebounds.  West and Jones continuing to carry the Woodbury offense.  Oturu with a pair of late buckets.  Tied at 40 at the half.

Oturu keeps it going with a nice spin move for 2 and a jumper.   Prince with 2 more putbacks as CDH leads 52-46 with 13 minutes to play.  Jones runs the floor for a 3 point play and Woodbury adds a layup.  Its a 13-5 Royals run and they lead 59-57 inside 10 minutes to play.  Ryan Larson for 3 and a West bucket but misses the freebie to tie.  65-64 CDH with 8:11 left.  Then Oturu takes over. He tip dunks a miss, then drives for 2.  He adds 2 more and a foul.  He dunks his own miss and drives from the elbow again plus another bucket and a putback.  That's scoring 14 of 17 points in a 17-4 run that takes just under 6 minutes.  That expands the lead to 14 with 2:30 to go and the outcome is no longer in doubt.  Cretin-Derham Hall wins 89-73.

Post Game
Can't say enough about Michael Jones for Woodbury.  CDH had to resort to faceguarding him after scoring the 1st 11.  He finishes with 26 points to lead the Royals.  He's improved a ton and expect his name to jump on the college radar this spring/summer.  His release is incredibly quick.  Jake West adds 24.  Nate Bursch with 9 and he did a reasonable job with his bulk against Oturu.  Woodbury sees their 7 game winning streak snapping.  They fall to 10-4 overall, 6-1 in the Suburban East.  They'll host Edina on Tuesday.

Cretin-Derham Hall gets a monster night of 33 points, 15 rebound and 7 blocks from Daniel Oturu.  He swatted shots and was able to score inside whenever Woodbury couldn't get a 2nd guy there.  Jacob Prince with 18 points, 14 of those (6 hoops and 2 free throws) off of offensive rebounds thanks to the attention Oturu was getting.  His other 2 hoops were layups as well.  Ryan Larson and soph Jaeden King add 13 points each.  King with 3 more triples to help open up the inside.  CDH totally dominated the glass and the paint.  CDH improves to 9-4 overall, 6-0 in the Suburban East.  They host Roseville and visit Park before a big showdown with Stevens Point in the Border Battle.

Heritage continues to roll

To Bethany Academy, on the short list of favorite gyms, to see the Eagles take on MCAA heavyweight Heritage.  Bethany enrollment has fallen on hard times so no JV team and 5 of the main 7 guys are underclassmen.  But could they catch Heritage on the night before their big section game vs Minneapolis North?

Game Time:
Bethany star Sam Peterson with 2 early triples as he passes the 1000 career points mark.  Bethany adds another bomb for a 9-6 lead.  Then the turnovers start coming for Bethany.  Woda converts one for 2 free throws.  James Vander Top converts another and adds a foul line jumper vs the Eagles 2-3 zone.  10-2 run for Heritage.  Peterson with a 3 and a hoop plus another Bethany 3, their 5th of the night.  19 all at the 8:30 mark.  Then its all Heritage.  No more field goals for Bethany in the half.  Heritage runs away from there with a 24-3 run to end the half.  Seth Halvorsen with 2 early inside hoops in the run and a steal for a dunk.  43-22 Heritage at the break.  They continue to blow it open in the 2nd half.  Vander Top and Woda doing whatever they want in the lane.  The lead blows up to 69-32 as we reach the running time mark.  Garbage time from there and Heritage wins 79-41.

Post Game
Bethany opened the year 6-1 but the meat of the MCAA schedule has gotten to them with 3 straight losses.  Bethany is now 6-4, 1-3 in the MCAA.  They host Legacy and SW Christian next week.  Sam Peterson with 4 triples on his way to 19 points and passing the 1000 career points mark.  Too many turnovers to be successful in a game like this but they shoot it better than expected.  Peterson is definitely a guy you have to game plan for.

Heritage improves to 11-1 overall, 5-0 to lead the MCAA.  The big 3 take care of business.  CJ Woda with 23 points on a double double night. Zach Johansen continues to impress with 22 points.  Jack Vander Top chips in with 13.  Nice night for Seth Johansen off the bench withi 10 points.  Surprised to see them play as much 1-3-1 as they did.  Not so much in the half court but just as a trap.  Depth and athleticism are definitely issues for this squad but their only loss is an overtime loss at Perham.  Minneapolis North comes calling tomorrow.  Then 2 league road games before the big lead game in 12 days vs New Life Academy.
