A clash of Metro East Titans

Prologue
We're into the 2nd week of February and this is where rubber meets the road in league play.  Tonight its a Metro East showdown between the leaders of the Metro East.  That's league leader Mahtomedi visiting Tartan.  Tartan 1 game back after giving up an 18 point lead in the 1st meeting.  Big crowd on hand means Tartan has to open the extra section of bleachers that are rarely opened.  Tons of interested folks for section play in the house too.  De La Salle, St. Anthony, Columbia Heights and almost all the players and staff from Totino-Grace there to see Mahtomedi.  Cretin-Derham Hall staff there to watch Tartan.  Rare to see that on a Friday night but they all played last night.  No walking tacos at Tartan tonight but a solid hot dog.  And if there's Pepsi, I'm all over that too.  We'll take this 1 hit wonder from a timeout for our daily dose of tunes.

Game Time:
Kaleb Siekmeier doing a nice job sealing inside for Mahtomedi.  He scores 2 early hoops for an early 7-5 Mahtomedi lead.  Then Tartan off on an 11-2 run thanks to a pair of Jordan Thompson 3s.  Noah Whalen bangs home a 3 off a turnover in between those.  18-11 Tartan at 11:10.  The Tartan lead gets to 26-18 before the Zephyrs counter with a pair of 3s.  The stars are quiet early but do contribute here.  Jordan Horn for 3 (his last FG of the night, foreshadowing) and a pair of FTs.   Those are countered by 2 BLOB buckets by Parker Fox.  33-28 Tartan at 4:15. Then its Trey Newman off the Mahtomedi bench with 3 bombs in a personal 9-0 run and he's stoked.  Thompson with another 3 and runs out for 2 free throws.  Fox converts a turnover to end the half.  42-41 Tartan at the break in a very entertaining half.

Kingston Myles started the game for Thompson.  Both would get the assignment on Parker Fox.  Its Myles who gets it to start the 2nd half as the Titans go diamond and 1 on Fox.  Siekmeier scores inside, Andy Voyen posts for 2 free throws and scores another bucket.  Fox dunks a turnover.  Its a 10-1 run across the half.  Mahtomedi leads 49-43 with 13:26 left and Tartan is reeling.  But Mahtomedi gives up that momentum with an off ball foul and a technical added on.  That costs Mahtomedi possession.  Horn makes the free throws and Whalen buries a 3 on the possession.  Thompson with his 4th bomb of the night to take the lead via a 9-2 run.  Mahtomedi scores and takes the MoKiller timeout with 9:10 left.  53-52 Mahtomedi back on top.

Parker Fox was the only hoop in the last Tartan run.  He tacks on 2 more hoops.  Then he finds Lincoln Rock and Siekmeier for easy hoops.  Horn with 3 free throws during this time for his only offense of the 2nd half besides the technical free throws.  63-57 Zephyrs pulling away with 6:10 left.  The lead hovers there but its Thompson scoring and then a Whalen 3 with 1:06 left to tie the game at 65.  Horn with a reach around foul with 31 seconds left.  Shayne Frost buries the bonus free throws to put Tartan up.  Tartan goes to a set they know well, a high double ball screen for Horn going left.  Mahtomedi defends it so Horn has to go it and create.  He misses with about 10 seconds left and then fouls out on the miss.  Will Tuttle makes both ends of the bonus.  Mahtomedi wins 69-65.

Post Game
For #10AAAA Tartan, Jordan Thompson leads the way off the bench with 17 points.  He knocked down 4 3s.  Noah Whalen also with 4 3s on his way to 15 points.  Jordan Horn with 14 points but no field goals after the 7:30 mark.  He missed his last 9 field goal attempts by my count, 0-7 2nd half.  Those were mostly contested shots too.  But there's wasn't much offense to be had.  The box and 1 was a surprise.  Mahtomedi went to high ball screen against the top guy as a counter.  Tartan falls to 18-3 overall, 9-2 in the Metro East.  That's tied for 2nd in the loss column with North St. Paul.  Tartan goes on the road for 4 of their last 5 including the trip to district rival North St. Paul 1 week from Tuesday.

#4AAA Mahtomedi improves to 18-1 overall, 11-0 in the Metro East.  This win likely clinches the Metro East title for the Zephyrs.  Parker Fox leads the way with 19 points and 7 rebounds.  He got 3 easy ones out of special situations.  Andy Voyen adds 11.  Lincoln Rock with 8 and Trey Newman with the 3 big 3s in the 1st half for 9.  Those 2 off the bench were critical.  Tartan's pressure bothered them early but as they settled in they got better looks.  Everything the Zephyrs made in the 2nd half was in the paint.  Defensively they were hard nosed and made Tartan work hard for looks.  The irony of Tartan's box and 1 was how effectively Mahtomedi has used it against Jordan Horn in the past.  Mahtomedi hosts St. Thomas Academy and visits Hill-Murray next week in conference play.  Then a section 4AAA showdown next Saturday vs St. Anthony.

Another night in white

Prologue
Back to more than 140 characters tonight. A blowout last night and a cameo appearance at Highland Park by The Emperor mean no postgame activity for a couple of days.  Tonight its another IMAC team to cross off the list.  Last night was St. Paul Academy, now Providence Academy gets equal time.  The pizza makes a late arrival or I totally missed it so that means a rare venture into popcorn tonight.  Reasonable amount for price, not oversalted and enough butter to taste but not be a mess.  Not a goto item as popcorn isn't filling enough for my waistline, but it got me thru the evening.  Brooklyn Center may not have the red carpet but coach McCollister always rolls out the white suit coat when I appear.  Which means white has to be an obvious theme for today's tune.

Game Time:
Brooklyn Center has one of the finest mascots around (Centaur).  But for the 1st 3 minutes, the head of the beast was missing.  7-5 Providence as BC takes time to awaken.  And that indeed happens.  The Centaurs go off on a 21-5 run out of that timeout.  5 different players score in the run.  Lu'Cye Patterson and Devonta Prince pick up their 2nd fouls almost back to back and sit for close to the last 5 minutes.  That allows Providence to cut the margin to 12 at the half, 30-18.

Brooklyn Center stretches the lead out right away.  Prince 2 hoops.  Adreone Sprinkles a hoop and a 3.  Qentrell Douglass a 3 point play and BC adds 2 technical free throws.  Ref just got frustrated with some minor chirping from the Lions bench.  I was close and didn't hear the complaining and Arriel McDonald still got whacked.  Douglas adds another layup.  Prince scores his 1000th point and later adds a dunk on a lob.  Cruise control for most of the half.  Brooklyn Center wins 69-47.

Post Game
Mark Richelsen carries the Providence offense.  He finishes with 16 and is the only Lion in double figures.  Dylan Servais added 9.  Only 2 seniors on the Providence roster with no fewer than 5 sophomores seeing extended time including Richelsen.  The Lions fall to 5-14 overall and 4-5 in the IMAC.  That gives them a 4th place finish as they have 2 wins over St. Paul Academy and Mounds Park Academy but 2 losses to Blake.  Providence has a very strange streak of 7 straight non-conference games to end the regular season.  This was the 1st of those games.  That continues next week as they host CHOF and Holy Family.

Great balance for Brooklyn Center as they have 6 players with 7 or more points.  Devonta Prince passes 1000 career points with 14 of his 18 in the 2nd half to help break the game open.   Soph wing Adreone Sprinkles continues to impress me.  He had 13 points with 3 triples.  Deshawn Pickford was the other Centaur in double figures with 10 points.  Brooklyn Center improves to 14-6 overall, 6-2 in the Tri-Metro.  The Centaurs visit Roosevelt on Saturday.  Then they finish with 4 league games.  That includes 3 tough home games against Fridley, De La Salle and Columbia Heights.

Monday night NWS Madness

Monday is usually a quiet day especially in February but its a full slate of  7 league games in the Northwest Suburban.  I watched Blaine at Park Center in person and then a late night snack of #1 Champlin Park at #2 Maple Grove.  Here are some rapid fire thoughts from both games.

Park Center 72 Blaine 64
  • No Byrun Bynum for Blaine was a big missing piece for them.  Add in some Sam Gerrity foul trouble and that caused the Bengals grief all night.
  • Good battle inside between Blaine senior Tim Leo and Park Center freshman Dain Dainja.  Dainja with 5 1st half hoops, 3 via pretty footwork, 1 via offensive rebound and 1 on a lefty post finish.  Leo would counter with 12 in the 2nd half including a pretty pivot around Dainja and reverse finish on the other side.
  • Idaho commit Losini Kamara didn't start and didn't score in the 1st half.  But he was pivotal late.  Blaine went on an 18-4 run to cut a 16 point lead to 2 with under 8 minutes left.  But Kamara would score 12 points and add an assist on a 3 in the next 3:30 to push the lead back to double figures.  He adds 4 free throws late to lead all scorers with 16 points.
  • Great balance from Park Center as Dainja scores 15, Jarius Cook with 4 triples and 15 points.
  • Jet's pizza isn't a bad thing, I like the individual boxes.  Rocky Rococo's is right up the street though.  The Rocky's Sausage and Mushroom, high quality and a Wisconsin institution.
#1AAAA Champlin Park 70 #2AAAA Maple Grove 60
  • I was very surprised that Champlin Park put McKinley Wright on Brad Davison.  I thought using DJ Hunter or Marcus would have made far more sense.  Keep McKinley fresh and out of foul trouble.  Neither of those became an issue though.
  • I feel about Champlin Park's zones much like Kevin Garnett feels about a certain Craig Sager suit.  Burn it, burn it to a crisp, burn the ashes.  It is mystifying how many times the Rebels are in total control and they change to a zone just because they can.   The 2-3 zone kept Maple Grove in it late and the 1-3-1 wasn't much better.  But more disturbing is that they were completely and totally unnecessary.  They have proven they are good enough to play with and beat anybody with their man defense.  Why change if not needed?
  • Theo John was a major difference.  His shotblocking kept Maple Grove from attacking on 1 end (more on that to follow).  On offense, you could throw it to him and he had a least a couple of nice feeds from there that turned into points.  That passing is an area where he's gotten much much better.
  • Maple Grove settled for way too many jump shots.  Davison and Pickford were very effective when they attacked but didn't do it nearly enough.  Davison in the post was also effective but after a 1st half score, we never saw it again.
  • Maple Grove's stars need help.  Pickford and Davison had 75% of their scoring and nobody else had more than 4 points.  That won't be good enough to win the big prize.
  • Transition defense also a problem for Maple Grove.  Champlin Park turned those jump shots into run outs for easy buckets, especially in the 1st half.
  • The battle for Mr Basketball was definitely apparent.  I thought Brad Davison pressed too much.  McKinley Wright definitely looked to score more than he did in the Hopkins game.  Wright definitely takes the lead on my ballot.  But Davison still has a fantastic resume should anything change.  Big night tonight vs Eden Prairie in 2OT from Nate Reuvers (and he has a critical rematch vs Apple Valley) to stay in the discussion.

Targeting the Tri-metro

Its a quiet Saturday on the February schedule.  But this day gives me a chance for my first games of the year (and maybe only ones) at Target Center.  Tri-Metro foes De La Salle and St. Croix Lutheran just played each other on Thursday.  For now, they host the 2 games at Target Center.

Game 1: #1AAA De La Salle vs #3AAAA Sioux City East (IA)
Sioux City East played early last night and made the trip up afterwards.  The 3rd ranked Black Raiders came in 15-1 on the season.  They feature 2 top Iowa players in soph guard Aidan Vanderloo and junior forward Van Rees.  Rees would open the game with a 3 point play. Then its a 20-0 Islanders run in a span of 4:45 with 6 different De La Salle players to start it.  The lead stays at 20 at the break.  Rees picks up his 4th foul just over 90 seconds into the 2nd half.  That triggers a 9-0 run that pushes the De La Salle lead to 26.  The Black Raiders would rally as De La Salle got sloppy vs the 2-3 zone.  Rees converts a turnover into points to cut the lead in half.  53-40 with 5:51 left after a 17-4 run.  But De La Salle doesn't give up a field goal the rest of the way.  Christian Dickson diving from the high post vs the zone for 2, Dom Bledsoe for 3 etc etc.  De La Salle finishes the game on a 20-4 run.  Islanders win 73-44.  Goanar Mar 22 points to lead De La Salle.  Gabe Kalscheur with 12 and Christian Dickson with 14 off the bench.  Aidan Vanderloo leads Sioux City East with 13 points.  Van Rees with 11.  Lithgow off the DL for this one but him and his crew did not have the best of days.  The Sioux City East bench was not pleased all day.  Let's just call it rust and leave it there.

Game 2: St. Croix Lutheran vs Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton
This is a rematch from last year's state quarterfinals where SCL won big.  This year both teams hovering around the .500 mark.  No Stephen Kletscher for St. Croix Lutheran due to going thru the concussion protocol.  Adam Arroyo starting in his place.  Big day for Garrett Maag.  He scores the 1st 8 for SCL.  The SCL lead expands to 17-6 thanks to an 11-2 run.  Arroyo 2 buckets there.  DGF would cut the lead to 5 but all SCL from there.  Arroyo 3 hoops and Ryan Eckl off the bench with 2 bombs.  Crusaders go on a 19-5 run over the last 7:05 of the half.  The lead is 19 there and the 2nd half provides no drama.  St. Croix Lutheran wins 66-48.  Garrett Maag leads all scorers with 27 for St. Croix Lutheran.  Adam Arroyo adds 13.  Kyle Rothschadl with 4 3s and 16 points all in the 2nd half to lead Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.  Freshman Drew Coalwell with 10 off the bench for the Rebels as well.

Then the real fun would begin.  The teams had the arena until the top of the hour and there were still 10 minutes left.  So let's bring the end of bench guys out and play 10 running time minutes with the varsity head coaches doing the officiating.  DGF head coach Mike Clark putting in work getting up and down.  SCL head coach Jay Wendland never breaking into a jog but getting great angles from the top of the key.  On the other end that is.  If he only would have blown the whistle from there, the shame.  Nice to see the lower guys get some time on court and against somebody different.  Fun move by the coaches who kindly jumped in with the whistle.

Hornets sting another giant

Prologue
Its an intriguing matchup of lower profile point guards on the schedule tonight.  That's Jordan Horn and #9AAAA Tartan visiting upstart Edina and Walt McGrory.  In a year loaded with point guards in Minnesota, these 2 tend to have a lower profile than they might otherwise.  Marist was in the building to watch the fast rising McGrory.  Its the usual sparse Edina student section and a sparse crowd overall.  The sausage pizza was so so and the rap music was beyond dreadful.  Somebody actually thought it was a good idea to rap the word suicidal over the bass riff to Stand By Me.  Easily the worst music selection I've heard all season.

Game Time:
Its Horn guarding McGrory to start the game.  That doesn't impact Horn's offense as knocks down 3 quick triples.  He finds Noah Whalen for a another bomb and Jordan Thompson hits from deep.  17-9 Tartan at the 11:29 mark thanks to those 5 treys.  Anders Nelson lights up for Edina scoring 11 points in a 19-6 Hornets run.  Damien Goergen comes in to play the post for Tartan and gives them good minutes.  Horn with a couple more 3s.  McGrory with a late transition jumper after a block plus a steal that he throws ahead to Nelson just before the buzzer.  36-34 Edina at the half.

Horn to Noah Whalen for 2 more Titans triples.  Joevon Walker with a tip in and layup after McGrory gets blocked on the other end.  Its a Tartan 14-3 run but coach Klingsporn wants the MoKiller timeout with 14:11 left.  Tartan up 48-41.  Edina counters with a 10-0 run thanks to McGrory with 5 points.  51-48 Hornets with 10:15 left.  Edina rotating defenders on Jordan Horn and Luke Glenna really getting into Jordan Horn and play starts to get a touch chippy.  Whalen another 3 from Horn.  Then an offensive rebound leads to a Nelson 3.  Horn counters with another triple and a layup.  Back and forth we go trading proverbial punches.  59-56 Tartan 7:53 left as Edina takes time.

Nelson scores and McGrory makes bonus free throws.  Then another offensive rebound and kickout for a Nelson 3.  McGrory 2 more bonus freebies but Horn continues to be hot from deep.  That trey ties the game at 65 with 3:41 left.  Kingston Myles with bonus free throws for a 69-68 Tartan lead with 2:07 left.  Edina misses but Tartan turns it over.  That results in a Nelson layup with 1:15 left and Edina is back on top.  Walker can't convert a lob and its back to Edina with 56.2 left.  Down 2 late, Tartan goes to the previously successful high double screen for Horn.  He misses Whalen on the pop.  Ultimately Whalen ends up with it and has to make a play.  His 3 banks around and just comes out.  McGrory rebounds and is fouled with 1.1 left.  He misses the 1st and Tartan takes their final timeout.  A questionable strategic move there. That means Edina can miss the 2nd FT intentionally which McGrory does.  Horn's long heave is no good.  Edina wins 71-69.

Post Game
Jordan Horn with a terrific game for Tartan with 32 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists on my sheet.  I had him 12-16 from the field with 7 triples. But Edina got after him with Luke Glenna and Michael Van Gorp and didn't make it easy.  Noah Whalen with 4 3s for 12 points.  Once again I liked what Damien Goergen did inside for the Titans.  He made a 1st half impact but saw limited 2nd half minutes.  I think more time and touches would made a difference.  Tartan falls to 17-2 overall and they are 8-1 in the Metro East.  They are at South St. Paul on Tuesday before the big rematch at home with Mahtomedi next Friday.  Mahtomedi came from 18 down to win the 1st meeting in mid January.

Anders Nelson leads Edina with 26 points with 3 triples.  He had a pair of back breaking triples off of offensive rebounds.  The offensive glass was a surprising advantage for Edina all night.  Walt McGrory adds 21 points and 10 rebounds.  He struggled early but had 14 points in the 2nd half and controlled the game down the stretch.  Luke Glenna didn't score but did a nice job harassing Jordan Horn on defense.  After a rough 4 game losing streak, the Hornets now have back to back wins over Wayzata and Tartan.  The Hornets are 11-6 overall, 2-3 in the Lake.  They host coach Berger's old school Holy Family before a rematch at Hopkins next Friday. Expect them to jump into next week's state poll.

Don't twist a Lion's tail

Prologue
To Hope Academy where the Lions take on #8A Cleveland in an interesting non-conference showdown.  Cleveland coming in undefeated against the 2nd worst schedule in class A according to the CzarPI.  Hope coming off a tough loss to Cristo Rey in TCAC play.  Great turnout from the Cleveland fans and its a full house on the south side.  The crowd would be treated to one of the better games I've seen all season.

Game Time:
Amusing listening to Cleveland head coach Dan Fredrickson as he sounds like Orono coach Barry Wohler on the sidelines.  Cleveland running Hope out of their own building early on.  Senior Jaiden Zishka goes over the 1000 career points mark as he's running for layups.  That's thanks to Hope turning it over vs a 2-3 zone trap.   Austin Plonsky also contributing to the early spurt.  Zishka finishes by converting 2 Lions turnovers into a 3 point play and another bucket.  33-11 Clippers at 6:51.  Hope counters with a 20-4 run over the last 5:20 of the half as they figure out the pressure.  Johnny Erickson 3 hoops and Ethan Reed 2 bombs in that run.  Cleveland lead is down to 42-36 at the half.

Cleveland right back to where they started.  Plonsky scores 7 straight Clippers points.  Mitch McCabe adds 2 bombs.  Zishka and Plonsky convert turnovers.  63-42 Cleveland inside of 12 minutes left.  Nate Elifson with a free throw and a blocked shot that turns into a Johnny Erickson layup.  Lead down to 15.  Zishka converts another turnover and runs for another layup.  72-52 Cleveland clipping along inside 7 minutes.  But they decide to play not to lose from there.  The Lions pounce.  Reed for 2 and Elifson with a 3 point play on a turnover.  Reed from deep.  Lead down to 12 with 5 minutes left as Cleveland takes time.  Elifson another 3 point play and a drive then a triple a couple of possessions later.  Zishka scores with 1:13 left to break the scoreless streak and extend the lead to 6.  Reed with another trey and the lead is down to 3.  Then a turnover that he turns into 1-2 free throws with 36 ticks left.  Another Cleveland turnover and its the lefty Erickson finishing on a right side drive with 13 seconds left to tie it.

Cleveland takes time at halfcourt and almost turns it over getting it in.  Then another struggle to maintain possession and they save possession via a timeout with 6 seconds left.  They inbound to the corner and a last attempt is no good.  The buzzer sounds but the officials correctly decide to put 1 second back on the clock.  Everybody is thinking free basketball but Johnny Erickson catches from just beyond halfcourt and his heave is off the glass and good!  Here's Ryan James' video of the game winner.  Hope Academy wins in a miraculous finish 77-74.  They outscore Cleveland 25-2 in the final 6:30 after trailing by 20. Biggest margin was 22 in the 1st half.

Post Game
Jaiden Zishka and his outstanding hair lead Cleveland with 28 points.  Austin Plonsky with 3 triples and 19 points.  Mitch McCabe with 4 triples for 12 points.  All of this playing without star Carter Kopet who's out with a knee injury.  The passive play down the stretch killed the Clippers.  When they were aggressive and running, they got out to the big lead.  When it got to the halfcourt, it was trouble with turnovers particularly late.   The #8A Clippers fall to 18-1 overall, 10-0 in the Valley Conference.  They have a big game next Friday at #9A Spring Grove.

Hope Academy improves to 14-4 overall, 5-3 in the top division of the TCAC.  4 starters score all but 1 3 point basket for the Lions.  Nate Elifson and Ethan Reed with 23 points each to lead Hope.  Elifson with 11 of those in the final run . He had a handful of blocks in the game as well.  Reed with 9 in that run.  Johnny Erickson with the final 5 of that run to end a night that had been quiet for him with 18 points.  Joey Erickson chips in with 10.  They have road games at St. Paul Prep/HSRA and Prairie Seeds Academy next week after a quick turnaround game vs International School.  A win over Prairie Seeds and a PSA win over Cristo Rey would give them a tie for 2nd in the division with PSA assuming all else holds.  If PSA runs the table in league they can share with Cristo Rey.

Tri-Metro saints to overtime

Prologue
Off to the 2nd year of Bandas Gymnasium at St. Agnes for an early 530 varsity doubleheader in Frogtown.  Its the St. Anthony boys and girls visiting for east division play in the Tri-Metro.  Oversized hot dog well worth it.  More Barq's Root Beer to wash it down.  And no bull folks, the St. Agnes mascot (a Benny The Bull from the Chicago Bulls clone) was in the house.  A teacher schools all the students in knockout at halftime.  Let's go oldies for today's tune.

Game Time:
Rhys Langums productive early with 2 hoops and an offensive rebound for a free throw.  Brandon Plasch productive inside for St. Agnes on this night converting layups or putbacks. His bunny cuts the St. Anthony lead to 8-6 at 13:40.  Then Gary Smith sits at 12:47 with his 2nd foul.  Big loss for the Aggies.  Langums converts a turnover into a dunk to end a 7-0 run and push the lead to 9.  Then an 8-0 run with a pair of triples to push the lead to 25-12 with over 4 minutes left in the half.  St. Agnes counters with an 11-0 run to end the half over those 4 minutes.  Plasch with 2 putbacks to end that run.  25-23 St. Anthony at the break.

Langums with a hoop.  Frosh Tait Nelson converts a turnover.  Langums with a block on 1 end and finishes on the other.  36-28 Huskies with 13:13 left.  Darius Lopez picks up the St. Agnes offense.  he puts back his own miss, banks in a hoop and makes bonus free throws.  Plasch adds another putback in the run as well.  All of that counters a Langums 3 point play.  We're back to even at 39 with 8:35 left.  St. Anthony looks to put the game out of reach with Aaron Smith going backdoor for a reverse and 2 free throws.  Langums with a free throw and Tait Nelson coast to coast for 2 free throws.  Langums finishes the 9-0 run with a hoop at the 5:15 mark.  St. Anthony in control 48-39.

But its another half that they don't finish.  Plasch with yet another putback.  Aaron Smith makes 2 free throws and the lead is still 8 with under 2 minutes left and the ball.  But its Gary Smith with a steal and 3 point play.  Lopez with a steal for another bucket.  Marcus Johnson for 3 after 2 more Aaron Smith free throws and the lead is down to 2 with 50 seconds left.  St. Anthony turns it over again but the Aggies miss a layup to tie.  They get it back and a Johnson drive and shot gets stuck between the rim and backboard.  That means we go to the possession arrow and it goes to St. Agnes.  Almost feel like its destiny to score now  They take time with 18.3 left to draw up a play and its Plasch on the BLOB for a wide open layup.  St. Anthony pushes and can't score.  We'll go to overtime tied at 52.

Its Johnson with a pretty drive to start the OT.  That gives the Aggies their 1st lead since 2-0.  Plasch with a putback countered by an Aaron Smith 3 for a 1 point St. Anthony lead.  Lopez with 2 free throws before a Langums freebie.  58 all.  Gary Smith fouls out with 1:04 left in OT and Dan Carpenter converts the 2 free throws for a 60-58 St. Anthony lead.  Then Langums with the rejection of Lopez and he makes 1 of 2 free throws.  St. Anthony grabs that rebound.  They turn it over but get it right back.  That's the last chance the Aggies get to tie as Langums makes 2-4 free throws along with 2 from Aaron Smith to seal it.  St. Anthony hangs on to win 65-60 in overtime.

Post Game
Darius Lopez leads St. Agnes with 21 points.  He scored 15 of those after halftime.  Brandon Plasch working hard inside as he scored 14 points.  All of those on putbacks or dump offs.  Gary Smith sat the last 13 minutes of the 1st half and finished with only 9 points.  Marcus Johnson good bench minutes as well with 7 points.  Its a dribble drive offense that they really attack out of.  But they were very hesitant to shoot the 3 which allows teams to back off.  St. Agnes falls to 7-10 overall, 1-6 in the Tri-Metro.  5 of those losses by single digits.  The upcoming schedule is brutal with trips to Columbia Heights on Friday and St. Paul Washington on Monday.  Then St. Croix Lutheran visits next Thursday and a trip to New Life Academy.

St. Anthony improves to 14-4 overall, 3-3 in the Tri-Metro.  Rhys Langums with another big game.  27 points (11-17 FTs), 12 rebounds and 4 blocks on my sheet.  While he doesn't like his left hand, he's surprisingly effective going right and spinning left and still scoring with right hand.  Aaron Smith adds 3 triples and 8-8 FTs for 19 points.  Rest of the roster besides Langums was 14-14 from the charity stripe.  Those 25-31 FTs dwarf the 10-13 FTs for St. Agnes.  Their man to man scramble traps at halfcourt also showed some effectiveness.  The Huskies have a pair of competitive league games coming up as they go to Brooklyn Center on Friday and host Columbia Heights next Tuesday.

2017 Border Battle Thoughts

Saturday marked the 11th Annual Border Battle between Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Solid crowds on hand all day.  That included a very nice crowd of red to see Wisconsin recruits matchup.  Here are some of the sights and sounds.

Game 1: #3 D5 Marshfield Columbus 96 #7A Springfield 83
Columbus couldn't get anything going in the 1st 10 minutes but they were still able to hang around to within 22-18.  Then they changed the game with a 2-3 halfcourt zone trap.  They ran off 11 straight using that defense to reclaim the lead.  Leading scorer Hunter Schultz got hot in tandem with that and Columbus would jump out to an 11 point lead at the half.  Isaac Fink had a big first half for Springfield but his teammate Tanner Vogel was held to 2 points.  They regroup in the 2nd half and rally to tie the game at 62 with 8:50 left.  Columbus would hit 4 straight 3s to push the lead to 10.  The lead was down to 6 but Schultz puts the game away with 2 more 3s and a bucket.  Hunter Schultz finishes with 30 points, Tyler Feurlinger 27, Nick Malovrh 19.  They combine for 11 of the 13 Dons triples.  Columbus very good offensive team in their dribble drive system.  Sophomore Isaac Fink leads Springfield with 30 points along with 6 rebounds and 7 assists.  Tanner Vogel had 19 of his 21 in the 2nd half.

Game 2: #1AA Minnehaha Academy 81 Prescott 73
Minnehaha with 3 steals for dunks or layups in the 1st 3 minutes.  JoVanni Bickham adds 2 3s as Minnehaha jumps out to a 16-7 lead.  After a rought start, Prescott star Owen Hamilton (N Illinois commit) would heat up with an inside hoop, dunk and smooth 3 to pull the Cardinals within 26-20 at the 7:30 mark.  Minnehaha would go on a 14-2 run to bust the game open.  Kaden Johnson with the 1st 8 points of the run.  That would propel the Redhawks to a 47-25 halftime lead.  Lorenzo Smith with his 3rd and 4th bombs of the day and a Bickham putback and the rout is on 63-37.  But Prescott didn't know that.  They hit a 3 then its Hamilton to the reverse and a 3 point play.  Bickham with the 3 off the UCLA screen and makes bonus free throws after the 5th on Hamilton with 2:51 to go.  Minnehaha up 75-63.  But in the blink of an eye its Petey Brookshaw with a hoop and then he steals an inbounds after a Brian Tayson 3 and scores.  75-70 with 2 minutes left after an 11-2 Prescott run.  Minnehaha takes 2 quick shots and misses.  Brookshaw has a 3 go around and out with a minute left.  Jalen Suggs with a very quiet day as he picked up his 4th foul with 15 minutes left.  But he makes 4 bonus free throws and has a steal for a dunk in the last 46.4 to put the game away.  JaVonni Bickham with one of the best games I've seen from him.  He finishes with 30 points and 4 triples.  Freshman Kaden Johnson with 14 of his 18 in the 1st half.  Jalen Suggs finishes with 14 points (5-14 FG).  Owen Hamilton 27 points and 9 rebounds.  Petey Brookshaw 16 points and 11 rebounds as well for Prescott.

Game 3: #10AAAA Tartan 80 Whitefish Bay 53
Siena commit Jordan Horn hot right out of the gate as he scores the 1st 8 for Tartan  Whitefish Bay would go up 14-12 but all Tartan after that.  Horn with a fadeaway and 4 free throws.  Then Noah Whalen and Kingston Myles hit 3s to finish the 12-0 Tartan run.  The lead would get down to 7 but Tartan kept pouring it on.  Horn another 3, 3 3s from Jordan Thompson and another Horn triple.  46-29 Tartan at the half.  Horn with a 3 and a driving hoop to bookend a 9-0 run in the 2nd half.  60-33 with 15 minutes left   Nothing of note after that.  Jordan Horn finishes with 25 points, 20 in the 1st half.  He nailed 5 threes.  Nice minutes for Damien Goergen off the bench inside, 11 points for him.  Xavier Johnson with 13 points to lead Whitefish Bay.

Game 4: #7AAAA Cretin-Derham Hall 71 #3 D1 Stevens Point 68
Beau Rosenthal with 10 of the 1st 12 for Stevens Point.  The Panthers would open a 24-16 lead.  CDH would get 2 hoops each from Jake Prince and Ryan Larson in an 8-0 run to tie it.  Stars Daniel Oturu and Joey Hauser trade the last 4 buckets of the half.  35-32 CDH at the half.  Oturu with a putback and fouled.  Then he scores on an inbounds and a swat of Hauser.  That turns into a triple on the other end.  Ryan Larson with a steal for 2.  Oturu with a tip dunk.  50-38 CDH with 12:40 left after the 11-0 run.  Hauser tries to bring the Panthers back with 2 3s and a pair of free throws.  63-58 CDH with 2:34 left.  Oturu with bonus free throws and a dunk.  Hauser with a jumper and a 3 at the buzzer but the comeback falls short.  Daniel Oturu with 30 points, 10 boards and 4 blocks on my sheet.  He rejected Hauser at the rim on now fewer than 3 occasions.  Joey Hauser with 22 points and 11 rebounds on my sheet.  But he didn't shoot it well from the floor and didn't have one of his better games. Ryan Larson chips in with 16 points for CDH and his quickness was a menace.  Drew Blair added 17 points for Stevens Point.

Game 5: #1AAA De La Salle 97 Kaukauna 65
This game was over almost at the tip.  Dom Bledsoe and Tyrell Terry for 3.  Goanar Mar converts a turnover into a layup.  Gabe Kalscheur finishes the 13-0 start with a 3 of his own.  The 3s keep coming.  Bledsoe in transition, Kalscheur off an offensive board and Mar.  Sage Booker runs for a 3 point play.  Kalscheur drives and scores and Bledsoe cuts for a layup.  33-12 DLS after a 10-0 run.  No number of timeouts for Kaukauna helps.  The lead is 27 at half and Kaukauna doesn't have a 2 point field goal.  De La Salle cruises from there.  Gabe Kalscheur with 21 of his 25 in the 1st half, 3 triples.  Goanar Mar adds 21 and 9 rebounds for the Islanders.  Eric Carl with 5 3s on his way to 23 points to lead Kaukauna.  Jordan McCabe with a forgettable 19 point day on 5-24 shooting and a handful of turnovers.

Game 6: #3AAAA Lakeville North 98 #1 D1 La Crosse Central 83
The showcase of Wisconsin recruits did not disappoint.  Both would have big nights but it was the balance from Lakeville North that made the difference.  Panthers have 5 others go for 9 or more points.  Central with only 1 other player with more than 9 points.  Kobe King would go bonkers with 49 points and 14 boards on 17-28 FGs.  That included 21 of the last 28 points plus an assist on a 3 in that.  But 19 points was too big of a hole to dig out of.  Nate Reuvers with 33 points (20 1st half), 8 rebounds and 4 blocks on 14-22 FGs.  Ethan Igbanugo with 14 of his 18 after the half along with great defense.  Bailey Kale held to 11 for Central.  After King, the rest of the Central roster shot 12-35 from the floor.   Lakeville North shot a ridiculous 41-68 from the floor including 70% from 2.

Game 7: #5AAAA Apple Valley 66 #10 D1 Milwaukee Riverside 46
Apple Valley couldn't buy an outside shot early on.  That would allow Riverside to jump out to an 16-11 lead.  The Eagles would try anybody and everybody against the 2-3 zone.  Mohamed Kone with a pair of hoops.  Ely Hendrickson with a hoop and a triple to give Apple Valley their only lead of the 1st half.  But Riverside scores the last 4 of the half to take a 28-25 lead to halftime.  The 2nd half is all Apple Valley.  Hendrickson with 3 bombs and Spencer Rolland with a layup. Then Tre Jones with the swat and rebound.  He pushes it and finds Rolland for another layup.  That great sequence is the highlight in the 21-4 run to start the half.  Terrence doesn't score in the 2nd half until inside the 7 minute mark.  He adds another hoop to keep Riverside within 48-39 with 5:40 left.  Kone and Jones score.  Nathan Macho with a 3 point play and 2 more Kone hoops. Macho puts back a miss.  Jones misses the front end but Riverside is asleep and Rolland puts back that miss.  That 15-0 run resolves any doubts.  Tre Jones cold shooting but finishes with 12 points, 10 boards and 10 assists.  Mohamed Kone and Eli Hendrickson with 14 points each to lead the Eagles.  Kone has been a revelation for the Eagles this season.  Outside of Ely Hendrickson, Apple Valley was 1-16 from 3.  Terrence Lewis finishes with 23 points and 8 rebounds to lead Riverside.  The rest of the Riverside roster shoots 11-30.
