Weekly Quick Hitters, week 2

So we're through 1 full week and the short opening week of the season.  As I look through stats and standings, here's what caught my eye.

As to scorers, many are no surprise.  But some of those are surpassing large expectations.  How about 41 a night from Anders Broman of Lakeview Christian, Zach Lofton lighting it up for 35.7 a night, Benji Figini at 33.5 and Jordan Smith and Alex Richter at 31 a night, Tony Kuplic at Trinity for 27 a night.

Others are more of a surprise.  How about 29.5 a night from 5'9" Joshua Kennedy at SW Christian.  24 a night for Levi Abercrombie at Armstrong.  Of course all of these numbers are early but still interesting. 

As to teams.  Let's start with 3-0 New Prague.  They come in at #6 in the 3A poll this week.  A 91-21 win at Mankato West was a real eye opener.  They also demolished section foes Waseca and Faribault by 34 and 24 points.  3 players averaging over 13.6 point a game in those wins.

Of course, when you talk the Missota, Chanhassen has to get a mention.  They've thumped Waconia and Lakeville North after losing the opener to Prior Lake.  Didn't see either of those wins coming, especially in impressive fashion.  

On the other side of town, Chaska loses at Burnsville in a shocker.  They didn't play well all fall and you could argue they underachieved last year.  They appear to be closer to that than to being a factor right now.

West Lutheran is 5-0 after sweeping play in their annual west coast tournament.  Let's see what they do at Maranatha on Jan 6th before drawing any conclusions from the soft schedule.

Andover at 0-2 is surprising, not so much because of the record, but losing 84-42 at Edina??  Didn't see that one coming.

How about Highland Park at 3-0.  2 expected wins but they handled Mahtomedi as well.  5 guys averaging double figures for new coach Jon DePerry.

Forest Lake at 3-0.  Not the greatest schedule but with all the talent they lost, they're still getting it done.  Phil Hegseth has stepped up his game averaging 23 points a night.

Woodbury at 1-1 with the Suggs brothers.  A tough 1 point loss at Central and then winning at #8AAAA Shakopee is impressive.  Their running style fits those guys well.  They'll be much better than I expected and with all the losses in the Suburban East, I can see them in the top half now.

How about St. Anthony winning at Concordia who I had pegged to win that division and section 4AA.  They host St. Croix Lutheran Monday for the early lead in the Tri-Metro East. Anthony Brama (not to be confused with Twins prospect Anthony Slama) averaging 23.5 a night in their 2 wins.
