After skipping a trip to the south metro yesterday, its time to make up for that with a trip to Eastview to see the Lightning take on Hastings in a section 3AAAA matchup. Minnehaha AD and head girls coach Josh Thurow and the MSHSL's Tim Leighton part of the night's officiating crew. Its Domino's cheese pizza, the up sell of Lays Sour Cream and Onion potato chips (extra 160 calories) plus 20 oz of Red Powerade for the main course. Then a hand delivered freshly baked chocolate chip cookie courtesy of the super kind and highly organized parents at the Eastview concession stand.

Game Time:
Good start for Hastings with Brandon Haraldson draining a 3. Colin Kummer with the jumper off a handoff. 9-4 Hastings at 13:50. Levi Zak adds a 3 off the bench. That's sandwiched by a pair of bombs from Eastview's freshman forward Tate Machacek. 14-10 Hastings at the 12:30 mark when Eastview heats up and the Raiders go cold. Mason Carpenter with a jumper, Tyler Worm for 3, Carpenter with a transition 3, turnover for a layup. Jameson Bryan adds a pullup 3 of his own on the break. Carpenter with 2 free throws to end the 15-0 run. Hastings taking their 2nd time of the run to try and stem the tide. Sawyer Levos and Haraldson go back to back with 3s of their own for the Raiders. 25-20 Eastview at 6:33. But those 2 hoops would be the only Hastings points in over 11 minutes. Derek Larson and Machacek with more 3s. Machacek adds a pretty spin and lefty finish before another Carpenter 3. Eastview goes to the break up 37-24 thanks to 8 3s.
The bombs keep falling in the 2nd half. Carpenter and Bryan with 2 more each. Haraldson counters with 2 of his own as Hastings tries to stay within striking distance down 49-34 with under 14 minutes left. But its not to be. Bryan with 3 the hard way plus 2 more on a lefty finish. Brady Miller with back to back triples to blow it open. Hastings goes 4 minutes with only 2 free throws. The run ends up being 17-4. That pushes the margin to 63-38 with about 9 minutes left. The rest is garbage time so I dash off to not be frozen in a snowbank. Eastview wins 81-55.
Post Game
Hastings falls to 2-2 on the season. Brandon Haraldson with 4 3s and 12 points to lead the Raiders. Colin Kummer held to 7 after averaging 15 PPG in the 1st 3. Junior forward Sawyer Levos with 9. I liked the idea of some of the offensive stuff they ran (corner series look for Kummer worked well). They'll play Benilde-St. Margaret's Saturday afternoon in the Metro East vs Metro West Showdown at St. Thomas Academy.
Eastview gets their 1st win of the season to improve to 1-2. They had 14 3s when I left and may have hit another. That was from 6 different players. Mason Carpenter 4 3s and 18 or 20 points to lead the Lightning. Jameson Bryan, Brady Miller and Tate Machacek all had multiple 3s as well. Loved what I saw from Machacek, especially as a freshman. Needs strength but can shoot it and has nice footwork. Also liked sophomore point guard Izaak Raspberry (hence today's tune). Didn't see much of the Paul Goetz playbook tonight which was a disappointment. He usually has plenty of really good sets to watch. It back to back for the Lightning as they visit Minneapolis South on Thursday. Then a tough stretch where they play at Lakeville South and Chaska next week. Then its Hopkins to open the Augsburg tourney over the holidays.
