Its the 2016 Border Battle. This year hosted by Onalaska, WI. Good crowds on hand all day. 4 ranked teams representing each state. Here are some of the day's highlights.
Game 1: #2A Spring Grove vs #3 D5 Marshfield Columbus
Spring Grove's Brady Schuttemeier would knock down 5 early 3s as the Lions built an early double digit lead. That lead would expand to 22. Columbus would cut it to 16 at the half. Tyler Fuerlinger would have a big 2nd half for Columbus on his way to a career high 32 points. Spring Grove star Chase Grinde would have a big half of his own. The outcome never really in doubt. Spring Grove wins 83-69 to give Columbus their 1st loss of the season. Brady Schuttemeier finishes with those 5 3s and 25 points. Chase Grinde also ends with 25.
Game 2: #4AA Lake City vs Westby
Westby's 1-3-1 zone gave Lake City some problems early. Then Marc Kjos came off the bench and made 4 straight 3s late in the 1st half. Big run for the Tigers puts them up 7 at the half. The Lake City lead would get to 12 but there was no answer for Jesse Solberg. He leads 12-0 Westby run and we're back to even at 46 with 8:45 left. Westby extends the lead to 55-51 but then it falls apart. Marc Kjos with another bomb. Brady Kuchinka had been quiet all day but he comes huge in the last 2 minutes. He buries a 3, then a steal for 2 and 2 bonus free throws to put Lake City over the top. Lake City wins 63-57. Marc Kjos 6 3s for 18 points off the Lake City bench. Eli Custer and Brady Kuchinka 14 each. Jesse Solberg with a career high 31 to lead Westby.
Game 3: Tartan vs Eau Claire Memorial
This game was unique for the case where both teams made a trip longer than what it would have been to have one of them host the game. Jordan Horn sits the last 9:51 and Jarvis Thomas the last 8:19 of the 1st half with 2 fouls. Horn with a couple of early 3s before that to put Tartan ahead. Darian Dieckman with 4 3s in the half for Memorial for a 32-18 halftime lead.
Jordan Thompson 4 of his 5 3s for Tartan in the 2nd half. Memorial star Isaac Appleby would score their last 8 points of regulation including a nice pullup with 10 seconds left to force overtime. Tie game with 1:50 left in the OT. Tartan patient and they end up holding right until the end. Its a kickout to Kingston Myles for the game winning 3 with 2.4 seconds left in the OT. Tartan wins 64-61 in overtime. Jordan Horn 17, Jordan Thompson 15 with 5 3s. Isaac Appleby with 20, Darian Dieckman 5 3s 18 points for Eau Claire Memorial.
Game 4: #1AAA De La Salle vs #5 D2 La Crosse Central
Central comes out triangle and 2 on Goanar Mar and Gabe Kalscheur. Then when Mar sits the last 8:29 of the first half, they'll stay box and 1 on Kalscheur. That slowed down the De La Salle offense and Wisconsin recruit Kobe King had it going on the other end. 19 in the 1st half for King to help Central to a 29-26 halftime lead. De La Salle's defense locks down in the 2nd half as they hold Central to 1 basket in a 9 minute stretch. 46-39 De La Salle with 3 minutes left. King with 4 tough hoops down the stretch as Central tries to make a comeback. De La Salle hangs on 56-51. Kobe King outstanding with 32 points. But only 1 other Red Raider had more than 5 before the final 30 seconds. Sage Booker with 15 to lead De La Salle. Samm Jones with 14. The Kalscheur and Mar combo held to a combined 14.
Game 5: #1A Minneapolis North vs #10 D2 Onalaska
Jamil Jackson runs for a dunk, Patrick Dembley 2 3s and a lob to Jackson for a dunk. 16-8 North early and the rout appears to be on. Onalaska hangs around with 3 3s later in the half to keep the margin at 31-24 at the break. Tyler Johnson with a nasty dip dunk and another power dunk to keep the lead at 10. Tyler Hughes with a big half for Onalaska. He hits a 3, Noah Frederickson hits a 3 and a 3 point play from Tyler Turriff brings the Hilltoppers back. North lead down to 60-55 with 6:11 left. But North scores the next 7 to push the lead back to double digits. Hughes with a 3 and 4 free throws to cut it back to 8 with 2:25 left. North would finish the game on a 14-0 run to win 84-62.
Game 6: Minnetonka vs #1 D1 Stevens Point
Tough matchup for Minnetonka drawing the defending state champions and top ranked Panthers who handled Champlin Park a couple of weeks ago. This one was the Trev Anderson show. The UWGB recruit scored 25 of his 31 points in the first half. Joey Hauser with 22, Marquette commit Sam Hauser added 20 despite early foul trouble. Amar Miller leads Minnetonka with 21. Nice outing for Cedric Boone with 19.
Bonus Friday Game: Armstrong at Park Center
Park Center with 7 3s in the 1st half against the Falcons man defense. So Armstrong being down 3 decides to switch to an active 3-2 zone for the 2nd half. Park Center did a great job of moving the ball, but Armstrong was flying all over to try to run the Pirates off the 3 point line. Park Center up 3 after 2 FTs with 59.8 to play. Armstrong trying to rally. An inbounds home run finds True Thompson for a tough catch and finish. The free throw no good. Jump ball to Park Center before they miss a front end. They grab the miss but turn it over. Out of a timeout, a long SLOB pass finds True Thompson for 2 more and Armstrong grabs the lead with 31 seconds left. Park Center misses and Chance Bowen makes 2 for a 3 point lead. Park Center misses a 3 short and its back to the charity stripe. Armstrong misses 2 with 8.2 left and a chance to seal it but they get the rebound back. True Thompson misses 1st but makes 2nd to seal it. Armstrong wins 61-57 via a 7-0 run in the last minute. Losini Kamara 18, Derrick Ogechi 16 for Park Center. True Thompson leads Armstrong with 12 points. Isaiah Rollins with 11 off the bench. Race Thompson held to 11 points and no field goals in the 2nd half. Malcolm Lawson very physical with him and Race wasn't away from the basket much where he could use a quickness advantage.

Prologue
Its an overflow full house crowd at St. Croix Lutheran to see the #1AA Crusaders take on #1AAA De La Salle in a girls and boys doubleheader. Crowd in the lobby, crowd standing everywhere there was space, all the seats packed, full parking lot. Plus somebody kept the Minnetonka Fire Marshal away. The girls got the crowd warmed up, then we rev it up with Austin Powers and 50 cent music for intros. Its a basketball atmosphere at its finest.

Early on its all St. Croix Lutheran. Ade Murkey to the rack for 2, Trenton Krueger backdoor for 2. Krueger with 2 more layups to force a De La Salle timeout. Krueger with a putback and Aage Rovney with his 2nd triple of the night. 18-4 St. Croix Lutheran less than 8 minutes in. De La Salle would grind their way back. Goanar Mar for 3. Gabe Kalscheur drives for 2 buckets. 26-16 St. Croix just inside of 6 minutes left in the half after a Murkey hoop. Then the rest of the half is all De La Salle. Kalscheur putback, a 3 and a long 2 plus a Mar 3 to tie it. Then Sage Booker with a 3 point play to give the Islanders their 1st lead. Its a 13-0 run to propel De La Salle to a 31-28 halftime lead.
Keep that momentum going to start the 2nd half. Austin McGeheran banks in a 3, Kalscheur another hoop and Dom Bledsoe for 3. 41-32 Islanders with 14:43 left and the Crusaders need a timeout. Its a 25-6 De La Salle run across halftime. Too much big men for St Croix Lutheran. Murkey 2 free throws, Krueger posts for 2 and spins for 2 more plus another post up. Frosh Tyrell Terry off the De La Salle bench with a 3 and De La Salle is still up 7. Murkey still has it going with 2 free throws, a jumper, a 3 point play and a putback. 53-51 De La Salle with 7:44 left and its game on.
Krueger 2 straight hoops and Murkey with a putback after the Islanders miss a front end. 57 all inside of 5 to play. Murkey grabs a miss and goes coast to coast to put St. Croix up 59-58 with 3 minutes left. Mar makes bonus free throws but its another St. Croix Lutheran putback to counter. This one by Krueger. De La Salle takes timeout down 1 with 1:49 left. They miss and Murkey attacks on the other end and grabs his own miss for 1-2 free throws with 1:29 left. Kalscheur with a clutch jumper to tie it. But its Krueger again on the offensive board. He tips in a miss with 52 ticks left. Kalscheur makes 1 free throw with 42.8 left. 64-63 St. Croix Lutheran up and with possession. But they turn it over at half court. Murkey saves that with a block with 15 seconds left.
De La Salle gets it in and its Mar with a jumper with about 8 ticks left. 65-64 De La Salle leads. St. Croix Lutheran rushes it back without a timeout. Its Murkey fumbling it and he appears to grab it and he's fouled as the buzzer sounds. What do we have here? Its a 3 shot foul on Sage Booker with 0.7 seconds left. Oh my. Murkey makes the 1st and De La Salle takes a timeout. After the timeout, coach Dave Thorson appeals to his fans to calm down as they're about ready to riot after the foul call. Murkey misses the 2nd. Murkey steps up for the 3rd and its no good, but soph Garett Maag goes over the top and puts it back at the buzzer! St. Croix Lutheran wins the 2nd battle of number ones 67-65.
Post Game
Gabe Kalscheur leads De La Salle with 20 points. Goanar Mar adds 19. Samm Jones with 10. The defensive pressure did allow the Islanders to get back in it. But the big elephant in the room struck them again, size. They couldn't keep St. Croix Lutheran off the offensive glass. The final play of the night was just a fitting end based on the rest of the night. The loss breaks a 9 game winning streak for the Islanders. They are in the Border Battle vs La Crosse Central on Saturday. They are 11-4 overall, 7-1 in the Tri-Metro.
For St. Croix Lutheran, the big 2 (sizewise) come up big inside. Ade Murkey with 19 of his 29 in the 2nd half. No answer for him in the lane. Trenton Krueger with 16 of his 26 in the 2nd half. They score all but 4 of the Crusader points in the 2nd half (2 Maag putbacks). They total 55 of the 67. If you're going to take a small school kid for the Mr Basketball final 5 (and the committee was at the game), hard to imagine there's anybody with a better case than Ade Murkey. He's played at a consistently high level all year and they've been hugely successful against a killer schedule. St. Croix Lutheran now 6-0 in the Tri-Metro, 17-2 overall. They play #8A Battle Lake in the Super 60 event at Hopkins on Saturday.

Free hoops in a river rivalry
Prologue
To Brooklyn Center where the Centaurs hosted cross-river rival Fridley. I remember this from the days of the short lived Metro Alliance Conference. Newer bleachers on the stage with the scorers table give the gym a much different feel. Water is the beverage of choice
Number of Teams I've Seen: 133 (50 courts, 2 new, 2 TV games, 93 varsity games)
Beverage Ticker: 588 ounces (4950 calories) + 7 liters (880 calories)
Pizza Ticker: 9
Walking Taco Ticker: 8
Pork Sandwich Ticker: 5
Game Time:
Close game early with Tirik Reeves to the rack for 2 countered by a Landon Kirkwood jumper. Deshawn Pickford with the triple and attacks for a 3 point play. 13-8 Brooklyn Center 4 minutes into the game. Tessy Pal already with 2 fouls so Fridley goes to a 3-2 for the rest of the night. That sparks a 13-3 Tigers run. Tyree Caruthers with a pair of hoops in that run. Pal getting a rest but comes back in and quickly picks up his 3rd foul. He'll sit the last 9:33 of the half. 21-16 Fridley with the lead at that point. Davonta Prince with a steal for 2 and a nice scoop for 2 more. Kirkwood to the rack and we're all tied at 26 going to the last 5 minutes of the half. Soph Evan Nelsen with a 3 and a layup for Fridley. Caruthers runs for a layup and converts a turnover for 2 more. Its a 13-2 Fridley run before a Kirkwood 3 ends the scoring for the half. Fridley up 39-31 at the break.
Shyheem Murray with a long 3 with 14:45 left to stretch the Fridley lead to 47-35. Brooklyn Center starts their comeback. Pickford with a drive for 2 and another drive for 2 free throws. Lu'Cye Patterson takes a kickout and buries a 3. Kirkwood to Prince for a dunk. A late (but correct) charge call on Pal is his 4th with 10 minutes left. All the momentum with Brooklyn Center and the fans are awake. Kirkwood converts a turnover, Pickford makes bonus free throws, then a nice Centaur cut to the middle of the zone for a short jumper. Brooklyn Center back on top 53-51 with 8:30 to play. The math is 18-6 in 5 and a half minutes.
Murray scores and then buries another 3 as Fridley regains the momentum with a 9-3 spurt. Brooklyn Center needs timeout down 60-56 with 4:38 left. Fridley with a block but they miss bonus free throws. Pickford hits the textbook inside out of the zone triple. He then is open on the break but fumbles away a pass for a go ahead layup. Centaurs end up turning it over and Fridley makes bonus free throws to push the lead back to 3. Prince fouled on a 3 and makes 2 of those with 1:38 left. Fridley misses another front end but Brooklyn Center turns it over. Fridley scores to go up by 3. Pickford with a quality look for 3. No good but they get it back. It finds Pickford again and this time its pure gold from 3. 66 all with 23 seconds left. Fridley turns it over on their possession but Brooklyn Center can't get a good look at the horn. We'll play free basketball.
Caruthers starts the OT with 2 free throws. Pickford counters with another hoop to tie. But the Centaurs can't get anything else to fall in the overtime despite a bunch of good looks. Fridley makes 9-12 FTs in the overtime and they win 77-68.
Post Game:
For Brooklyn Center, Deshawn Pickford with a career high 26 points. He made 3 triples. Davonta Prince with 14, Landon Kirkwood with 11. Kirkwood quiet night of points but he was in the middle of the zone effectively distributing. Loved the decision by coach Matt McCollister to go to his dribble drive man offense vs the 3-2 zone. Brooklyn Center's 3 game winning streak is snapped. They fall to 10-7 overall, 3-4 in the Tri-Metro. The week doesn't get any easier with Roosevelt coming in on Thursday and a trip to St. Anthony on Friday.
Tyree Caruthers leads Fridley with 21 points. All of those bunnies. Shyheem Murray with 10 of his 15 in the 2nd half. Tessy Pal with 8 points due to foul trouble along with a couple large rejections. Good minutes from soph Evan Nelsen off the bench with 7 points. Coach McDonald's move to the zone was a wise one. Fridley hosts old rival Spring Lake Park on Thursday before visiting Minneapoils Henry on Saturday. This was the 1st of 2 meetings between Brooklyn Center and Fridley. They'll meet again at Fridley in 2 weeks.

Trojans march on
Prologue
Its another home showdown for North vs a ranked opponent from the Lake Conference. This time its #6AAAA Wayzata that comes calling. Ryan Lindberg out for Wayzata. He was in a walking boot. We get The Rev on duty (go figure) and he was in star form calling 3 awful flops and the always insane double foul. Mr Basketball committee on hand to watch.
Number of Teams I've Seen: 133 (49 courts, 2 new, 2 TV games, 92 varsity games)
Beverage Ticker: 588 ounces (4950 calories) + 6.5 liters (880 calories)
Pizza Ticker: 9
Walking Taco Ticker: 8
Pork Sandwich Ticker: 5
Game Time:
Its a quick start for Wayzata with Johnny Beeninga and Jack Sowada burying transition triples. Then a nice cut by Sowada for 2 more. 10-2 Wayzata 3 minutes in and North needs to talk it over. North comes back thanks to forcing a pair of turnovers. Isaac Johnson converts those into 2 free throws and a dunk. 18-14 Wayzata at 10:15. Gavin Baumgartner for 3 and he goes to the nice finish over Jamil Jackson after the Trojans blocked a shot on the other end. That expands the lead to 33-20. The lead would get to 15 but an Odell Wilson putback and a late Tyler Johnson 3 keep North close. 40-30 Wayzata at the break.
Wayzata hot to start the 2nd half. Baumgartner jumper and the foul. Sowada 2 bombs and Austin Slater for 3. 52-33 Wayzata just over 3 minutes in to the half. Beeninga drives and goes glass and then buries a 3 after a Jamil Jackson dunk. 58-39 Trojans with 12:35 left. Tyler Johnson with a free throw and a tip in. That tip in starts starts a 7-0 run and the lead is down to 70-57 with 5:15 left. 5 free throws and then the lob to Baumgartner is the exclamation point. That's part of a 13-0 run that puts the game out of reach. Wayzata wins 85-60.
Post Game:
Tyler Johnson leads North with 15 points. 12 of those in the 1st half. Isaac Johnson and Jamil Jackson with 10 each. North goes 9-21 from the charity stripe in the 2nd half. More aggressiveness got them to the line but they'll have to make those. Not a good night defensively either as they couldn't control Beeninga or find Sowada. North falls to 16-4 overall (all 4 are high quality losses), 8-0 in the Minneapolis City. They are at Edison on Thursday before playing host Onalaska, WI in the Border Battle on Saturday night.
Wayzata has now won 6 in a row and 10 of 12 after a 3-3 start. Their 5 losses are to 1,2,4,5 and 8 in the AAAA poll. Johnny Beeninga leads the way with 24 points. He hit 3 triples. Jack Sowada added 4 triples on his way to 20. Gavin Baumgartner adds 13. Good minutes from freshman Jacob Beeninga off the bench holding his own against a very talented North squad. Wayzata plays at Hopkins on Friday. The 1st meeting was a 1 point home loss. Then they return to Hopkins on Saturday to play Farmington in the Super 60 event.

Weekly 360 Windmill, Jan 24, 2016
After a week off due to technical issues, the Weekly 360 Windmill returns. Its my look at the week that was and the week that will be. A big week on the schedule last week. In some conferences we got clarity, in others the waters became more cloudy.
Last week
Monday games of note
2 events highlight the weekend. Locally its the Super 60 event at Hopkins. #10A Battle Lake vs #1AA St. Croix Lutheran and #1AAAA Hopkins vs #2AA Caledonia highlight that schedule
I return to The Old Kingdom for the 10th annual Border Battle. This year its in Onalaska, WI. Beware of the big white wall as the hideous backdrop behind one of the baskets. Home state teams have won a staggering 27 of the last 28 games over the past 5 seasons including the last 21. Minnesota leads the all-time series 29-22.
11:00 a.m. -- #3 D5 Marshfield Columbus (WI) vs. #2A Spring Grove (MN)
12:45 p.m. -- #13 D3 Westby (WI) vs. #5AA Lake City (MN)
2:30 p.m. -- Eau Claire Memorial (WI) vs. Tartan (MN)
4:15 p.m. -- #6 D2 La Crosse Central (WI) vs. #1AAA De La Salle (MN)
6:00 p.m. -- #8 D2 Onalaska (WI) vs. #1A Minneapolis North (MN)
7:45 p.m. -- #1 D1 Stevens Point (WI) vs. Minnetonka (MN)
My predictions
I think the home state streak goes seriously bad this year.
Spring Grove, Lake City, Tartan, De La Salle, North and Stevens Point all get wins.
Chase Grinde, Brady Kuchinka, Jordan Horn, Jarvis Thomas, Gabe Kalscheur, Goanar Mar, Tyler Johnson, Jamil Jackson, Patrick Dembley, Isaac Johnson, Amar Miller, Seth Coatta is a group of Minnesota kids to watch. A shame that Caledonia is coming up here to play instead, but a matchup with Hopkins is understandable.
Isaac Appleby, Bailey Kale, Kobe King (WI commit), Sam Hauser (Marquette commit), Joey Hauser, Trev Anderson (UWGB commit) are just some of the Wisconsin guys of note that are playing.
Amar Miller vs Trev Anderson and Kobe King vs Gabe Kalscheur are the 2 individual matchups of the day that stick out.
Chess match of the day. Central vs De La Salle. Central will play a ton of zone and De La Salle will focus on slowing down King and Kale. 1st one to 40 wins. Both teams are essentially 2 man bands. Central is deeper. But the zone will give De La Salle's guys chances. I hate picking against the alma mater but I like the Islanders in a close one. Central does have the advantage of it being a familiar gym.
Sleeper game of the day: Marshfield Columbus vs Spring Grove
Last week
- Minnehaha with wins over SPA and at Breck to take charge in the IMAC.
- Woodbury makes a firm claim to the top spot in section 4AAAA and ties for 1st in Suburban East with the grudge home win vs Cretin-Derham Hall. The Royals have won 12 straight since the last second loss to the Raiders.
- Cretin-Derham Hall could have gone 2 games up in the Suburban East and taken a strong hold of section 4AAAA with 2 wins. Instead they go 0-2 and fall to 2nd in the section and tied for 1st in the league.
- Great week for Chaska as they go 3-0 with wins at Cooper, at St. Louis Park and at home vs Orono. They stay in 1st place alone in the Metro West.
- Eden Prairie goes on the road this week and beats Cretin-Derham Hall by 30 and Edina by 11. We've wondered about the Eagles but a deeper look shows that 8 of their 9 losses are by a grand total of 20 points. That includes 3 losses by a single point.
- CHOF falls from the ranks of the unbeatens with a blowout loss at Cannon Falls. Its a tough week ahead for the Lions with SW Christian and a trip to New Life. Then Brooklyn Center comes calling to start the following week.
- Hope Academy is now 9-0 since New Year's and they've already knocked off all the top contenders in the EMAC.
- Richfield has now lost 4 of 5 in the last 2 weeks to fall out of the top spot in section 3AAA.
- Highland Park with 2 road wins to extend their streak to 5 in a row to take over that top spot in section 3AAA.
Monday games of note
- #6AAAA Wayzata at #1A Minneapolis North
- #2AAA Red Wing at Northfield. Quality Big 9 road test for the undefeated Wingers.
- Watertown-Mayer at Rockford. Its arguably the best chance for metro fans to see Watertown-Mayer star Trae Berhow. These teams also slugging it out for position in 5AA West. Rockford won the 1st meeting by 2 in mid-December.
- Bloomington Jefferson at Eden Prairie
- Benilde-St. Margaret's at Chaska. Chaska's only league loss is giving up a 17 pt 2nd half lead at BSM.
- Minneapolis Henry at New Prague. Big game for Henry as it helps the strength of schedule and gives a comparison to all the teams in the loaded Wright County East.
- SW Christian at CHOF. Good test for both.
- Totino-Grace at Armstrong. Both trying to get back on track as they've each lost 6 of their last 8.
- Johnson at Central. Johnson trying to jump back into 1st in the St. Paul City but its always a struggle for them at Central.
- Nicollet Avenue bragging rights night
- Washburn at Holy Angels
- Richfield at Kennedy
- #1AAA De La Salle at #1AA St. Croix Lutheran. Last week we had an instant classic with #1AAAA Hopkins and #1A North, now the other 2 classes get their chance.
- Braham at Barnum (Great River vs Polar leaders)
- Northern Freeeze at Fosston (Six Star vs Pine to Prairie). Showcase game for Cole Dahl.
- Wayzata at Hopkins. Top 2 in the Lake Conference. Hopkins can de facto clinch with a win.
- Tartan at Mahtomedi. Both trying to keep pace with North St. Paul in the Metro East. A Mahtomedi win would put both teams 2 games back.
- Chaska at Jefferson. Chaska can de facto clinch the Metro West with 2 wins this week.
- Waconia at Delano. Another Wright County East battle for 1st and placement in section 6AAA.
- Central at Highland Park. Central with 2 wins this week would go 2 games up in the St. Paul City and de facto clinch.
- Monticello at Rogers (top 2 in the Mississippi 8)
- Fosston vs Waubun (Pine to Prairie division leaders)

North St. Paul Resurgence Continues
Prologue
Its a showdown for 1st in the Metro East as Mahtomedi visits league leader North (St. Paul). A rookie travel mistake means McDonalds before hitting the 2nd half of the JV game. A half liter of Pepsi keeps the ticker rolling. We get an appearance from the North St. Paul pep band. Plus a drum line at the half with a huge set of xylophones and keyboards. Quality music. So to pay tribute to the xylophones, we give you this tune.

Shayne Frost puts Mahtomedi on the board with 2 free throws. But then he sits with 2 fouls just 2:55 into the game. 7-2 NSP leading at that point. Mahtomedi rallies with Lucas Buller for 3, 2 pick and roll hoops from Kaleb Siekmeier, a 3 point play from Will Tuttle, 2 3s from Lincoln Rock. The Mahtomedi run is 27-7. 31-17 Zephyrs with 5 minutes left in the half. Jake Steckler for 3, Adreon Wadlington bonus free throws and he buries a 3 at the buzzer. That pulls North St. Paul within 41-33 at the half.
The Polars take that momentum into the 2nd half. Wadlington with another 3, then a Polars 3 point play and an extra pass finds Steckler for 3 to put NSP back on top. Its a 9-0 run to start the half and the Polars are back from 14 down. The pace slows after that. Parker Fox with a spin for 2 and then a 3 point play sandwiched around a Wadlington hoop. 51-50 NSP with 8:41 left. Another pick and roll hoop for Mahtomedi and they are back ahead. Termaine Daniels with a clutch 3 off a skip pass and a very pretty up and under move from Wadlington. NSP adds a layup and its 58-52 Polars with 5:50 left. Mahtomedi grabs and offensive board and finds Buller for 3 to cut the lead to 3 after North blocked a shot. North turns it over and Fox goes the other way but gets called for a very questionable charge inside 5 left. Goodnews Kpegeol counters with a hoop after a Polars timeout
Mahtomedi turns it over but Wadlington misses the dunk. The Zephyrs turn it over again and Daniels converts this one. Mahtomedi misses a front end and Wadlington makes 2 freebies. Wadlington then with a steal to give the Polars possession (he got killed on the drive but no call). Kimari Suggs-Morgan buries a jumper and the lead is 11. That's all she wrote. North wins 67-58.
Post Game:
Parker Fox leads Mahtomedi with 17 points and a handful of rebounds. Kaleb Siekmeier good minutes off the bench with 8 points. Lucas Buller adds 10. Shayne Frost with only the 2 early free throws. The early foul trouble took him out of it. Pick and roll action was effective. Turnovers down the stretch took away critical possessions. Mahtomedi falls into 3rd place in the Metro East at 7-2. They are 13-5 overall and battling Totino-Grace (who beat them head to head) for the top seed in section 4AAA. Quick turnaround with a non-conference game vs Stillwater tomorrow. Then Simley and Tartan at home next week.
North St. Paul stays on top of the Metro East all alone at 9-0. Overall record is 14-4. After starting the season 2-3, they have now won 12 out of 13.JT Gibson Adreon Wadlington leads the way with 25 points. He hit 4 3s and was attacking the basket as well. No answer for him. Goodnews Kpegeol chips in with 10. 4 others with 7 or 8 points. Great balance. Their athleticism really bothered Mahtomedi. Plus they were well prepared for the plethora of sets that Mahtomedi runs. Down 14 in the 1st half in past years could have been ugly, but they battled back tonight which is a great sign. They have a quiet week coming up with only 1 game at Sibley. They'll end the season at Tartan and at Mahtomedi. That will determine whether they end up with the 3 or 4 seed in section 4AAAA.

Orioles continue to fly high
Prologue
Its another matchup of ranked teams in the Northwest Suburban as #3AAAA Osseo visiting #10AAA Totino-Grace. Very nicely priced make your own walking taco on the menu tonight. But no sour cream available. That's a critical missing ingredient. Water goes with it. Hamline in the house. Tonight's program features the Osseo roster from Ian Theisen's sophomore season. What moldy cardboard box do you find that in?

Game Time:
Totino-Grace goes 2-3 zone for the night. That means you have to hit shots. Its John Bezdicek for 3 and Allan Anderson for 3 to force a TG timeout. Rocky Kreuser for 2 and he hits a 3 as the Eagles try to make a comeback. 13-10 Osseo at 13:20. TG sloppy early with 8 turnovers in the 1st 8 minutes. Zach Theisen with a pair of 3s and Damario Armstrong with a 3 point play. Osseo 24-16 inside 11.
Nate Kavolak cuts for 2 and another Kreuser hoop cuts the lead to 4. Then the shooting gallery begins. Theisen 2 more bombs. Kavolak with 2 of his own around a 3 from Mar Mar Hughes. Anderson with another 3. Kavolak again from deep. 36-34 Osseo with 4 left in the half. Totino-Grace with a chance to tie as they block a shot but miss the layup. Osseo comes right back and its Anderson behind the back to Bezdicek for a 3 point play to stop that momentum. Armstrong with a late 3 and Hughes ends the half with a drive. 49-39 Osseo at the half thanks to 10 makes from the deep beyond.
Kavolak with yet another 3 to start the half. Anderson sits with his 4th foul with just under 15 to play. James Streeter in the post and Zach Ban with 2 free throws as TG cuts the lead to 53-48 with 13:40 left. Buts its all Osseo from there. Armstrong for 3 and Bezdicek another 3 point play to push the lead back to double figures. Armstrong left alone on a BLOB for 3 and adds a 3 point play and later 2 free throws. Hughes ends the run by getting out on the break for a layup. Its a 23-4 Osseo run in just under 7 minutes to slam the door. 76-52 Osseo with 6 minutes left. They coast from there to a 92-64 win.
Post Game:
Rocky Kreuser with a big night for Totino-Grace. He finishes with 26 points and played lots inside and out. He's definitely a much improved player from what I last remember. He's been playing well for the Eagles and is in high demand for the summer season. Nate Kavolak with 21 on my sheet and 5 3s. He's an under the radar guy as a big 2 guard. The Eagles fall to 10-8 overall, 4-7 in the NW Suburban. That puts them 6th in the west division. They had won 2 in a row after losing 5 straight. Next week is a trip to Armstrong and hosting Spring Lake Park. They hope to have PG Charlie Jacob back soon. He has been out due to injury.
Osseo continues to play very well and when they shoot it like this, forget it. They make 13 3s on the night. They put 4 in double figures. Damario Armstrong and Zach Theisen with 18 each. Armstrong with 3 3s, Theisen with 4. Theisen with 15 in the 1st half, Armstrong with 12 in the 2nd half. John Bezdicek is a kid I love watching. He finishes with 15 points. Plays hard, always around the ball and makes plays. Mar Mar Hughes adds 13. Osseo has a rivalry game with Park Center and a trip to Irondale next week.

Keeping pace in St. Paul
Prologue
To St. Paul Como Park for their city game against St. Paul Highland Park. Smallish crowd on hand. They missed a great finish to the JV game. Como with a late stop and hoop to take a 2 point lead. But then a 1 handed running prayer off 1 foot is nothing but net at the horn to give Highland Park the win. A disaster on hand as all the hot dogs get taken before I get there. So no food but a 20 oz bottle of Mug Root Beer more than makes up for it. I had forgotten how good that stuff is.

Game Time:
Como Park opens with the 1st bucket. Then Highland Park jumps on the Cougars. Mike Cornelious with a hoop, 2 free throws and a 3 point play. Corneliious with 2 more free throws right before the end of the run. Its a 21-5 Scots run for a 21-7 lead at the 9:51 mark. Only Como Park offense early is Demetrice Mitchell. Mitchell was honored before the game for passing the 1000 career points mark. Como Park comes back with a 12-0 run of their own. Donald Ventrelli with bonus free throws and a putback in the run. Adnan Guled with 2 freebies and a steal for 2 that closed the run. Cornell Chandler for 2 in the post and coast to coast for 2 more. Mitchell scoring late in the half for Como. Highland counters with a putback and pair of free throws. That keeps the Scots on top 36-34 at the break.
Como Park hot to start the 2nd half. Its Guled with back to back bombs and no fear. Mitchell runs out for a dunk. Then he almost signs a poster after a timeout. Highland Park trying to finish inside but can't with their small lineup and no help from the zebras. Dreem Kelly-Jabbar keeping Highland close with a putback and a 3. Mitchell with another hoop and its 48-41 Como Park with 11:50 left. Highland Park not done. Khari Dennis end to end for 2, then a steal for a 3 point play and he converts a turnover for 2 more to tie the game with 10:20 left. Mitchell puts a kid on a poster and the crowd for both sides is really alive. Dennis with 5 more in a row. MoKiller timeout Highland Park after a 16-4 run. That puts them ahead 57-52 with 7:50 left.
Jason Jett with a nice give and go cut and he dishes that to Tom Fritts for a layup to cut the Highland lead to 1 with 4 minutes left. 2 Como turnovers become Highland hoops to push the lead to 6. Jett has 2 3s go down and come back out. Highland closes it out from there. Scots win 70-60.
Post Game:
Como Park head coach John Robinson at the end of the bench at the end of the game but he missed the start and an assistant ran the show. Demetrice Mitchell leads the way with 20 points. Adnan Guled with a couple big 3s early in the 2nd half on his way to 11 points. Jason Jett also with 11 points. His quickness does the name justice. The Cougars fall to 1-3 in the St. Paul City, 6-8 overall. They are at Washington tomorrow, then Harding and at Johnson next week.
Highland Park moves to 4-1 in the St. Paul City staying 1 game behind Central for 1st. They move to 9-7 overall and stay right in the hunt for the top seed in the natural disaster area known as section 3AAA. As a comparison, 6AAA has 6 teams ranked in front of anybody in 3AAA. Dreem Kelly-Jabbar came up big for Highland Park with 22 points. Khari Dennis big hoops in the 2nd half on his way to 13. Mike Cornelious with 11. Busy schedule for the Scots with 3 games in 4 days coming up. They are at Sibley on Saturday, at Roosevelt on Monday and host Washington on Tuesday. Then they have Central and Johnson at home in the 2nd rotation of league play.

Minnehaha wins IMAC showdown
Prologue
Off to Bergstrom Court at Minnehaha Academy to see the #5AA Redhawks in a big IMAC showdown vs previously ranked St. Paul Academy. Its a boys and girls doubleheader night. Minnehaha wins the girls game 74-11 after being up 44-2 at the half. Minnehaha is always one of my favorite places to visit. And quite often there's a food surprise (e.g. chicken wild rice soup). Tonight is no different. The pulled pork combo was outstanding with Lays chips and Gatorade. I did make the mistake of not adding BBQ sauce though. With these schools being so close together, I was surprised there wasn't a bigger crowd. Our tune is honor of the late Glenn Frey

Pizza Ticker: 9

Game Time:
Emerson Egly with a pair of early layups, then a skip pass for 3 and its 10-7 SPA at the 9:30 mark. Minnehaha counters with JaVonni Bickham for a 3 point play and a putback as part of a 12-2 run. 19-12 Redhawks at 6:20. Bickham another hoop but picks up his 3rd late in the half. SPA goes for 7 7 in a row to cut the lead down to 1. Jalen Suggs scores Minnehaha's last 5 points of the half with Bickham sitting. 26-23 Minnehaha at the half.
Kent Hanson with 2 pretty cuts for a layup and a dunk plus he buries a 3. Tommy Dicke adds a triple to conclude the spurt out of halftime. 33-29 SPA with 15:44 left. Suggs scores 7 in a row and Bickham adds a 3 point play. 10-0 Minnehaha run forces an SPA timeout with 13:15 left. Dalante Peyton with 5 in a row to cut the lead down to 1. Suggs looking for the contact and converting the 3 point play to help spot that momentum. Bickham with a push off (dicey call maybe) for his 4th foul and he'll sit with 9:26 left. Minnehaha clinging to a 47-44 lead. Jose Williamson with a 3 point play and a Jake Richardson steal for 2 push the lead right back to 8. Suggs with back to back hoops including a steal and wraps it around his back on his way to the layup and the lead is double digits. Dalante Peyton for 3 to cut the lead to 58-50 with 4:47 left. Bickham returns and makes a jumper. Suggs with 2 drives for scores and a bonus free throws. That closes it out. Minnehaha wins 70-60.
Post Game:
Kent Hanson leads St. Paul Academy with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Emerson Egly with 12, Dalante Peyton with 11. Lots more Princeton Offense from SPA in this one. That has really taken Peyton out of his element. Its a big adjustment from all of the high pick and roll they ran with him and Hanson last year. SPA falls 2 games back in the IMAC at 1-2 with losses to both teams in front of them. They are 11-5 overall. The rest of the schedule is very winnable. The rematches with Breck and Minnehaha are in 2 weeks and both are at home.
Jalen Suggs played the best game I've seen him play for Minnehaha. I had him for 27 points and 8 rebounds. 20 of those points in the 2nd half as SPA had no answer for him getting to the rim. He did all of that without making a single 3. He had an early 2nd foul and did well to not get the 3rd like in other games this year. JaVonni Bickham with 14 points and 8 rebounds despite foul trouble. Only 4 3s for Minnehaha which is a good thing for them. Attacking the rim rather than settling for lots of 3s. The Redhawks stay undefeated in league play and will play at Breck to break the 1st place IMAC tie on Friday. Overall record is 12-5, 3-0 in the IMAC.
