Week 10 Tuesday Night Scoreboard Club

Scores from 1/29/08 that caught the Czar's eye.

Conference Action
  • Apple Valley goes to Kennedy and pulls the upset by 14. If you would have told me that AV would outscore Kennedy by 15 on the road in the 2nd half and Varmah Sonie had only 3 pts total for the game and AV would win easily, I would've said you're crazy. With Eden Prairie's come from behind win at Jefferson, Kennedy falls a game behind at the midpoint of the Lake season. 3rd tough home loss for Jefferson, they fall to 4-6 and a 3 way tie for 6th in the Lake with Rosemount and Apple Valley.
  • Centennial upsets Coon Rapids for their 1st conference win and Champlin Park goes on the road and beats Elk River by 29. Scott Theisen after hitting 9 of 14 3s vs Centennial, hit 11 of 15 3s vs Elk River, WOW! Champlin Park improves to 4-3 and has 3rd place in the NW Suburban (via tiebreak with Coon Rapids). Those teams are 3 games behind Osseo who won what will probably be their last major test until the 5AAAA section final with a 6 pt win at Maple Grove.
  • Tough times for New Prague as they lose their 2nd straight in Missota play with a 9 pt loss at Holy Angels. Farmington goes to Hutchinson and loses so that leaves all the expected contenders, AHA, Shakopee and Prior Lake (and Farmington) at the top with 1 loss.
  • MCA goes to NLA and gets a tough 2 point win. Another close league win on the road, what does this mean come tournament time?
  • Josh Figini with 2 pts (avg 21.4) for Chisago Lakes in a loss to BSM. They fall to a disappointing 3-12 and one of those wins was over Princeton in the season opener. (Czar's note 2/4/08, A very kind reader has informed me that this Chisago Lakes entry is incorrect. See my correction here)
Non-Conference Action
  • Roosevelt goes to Columbia Heights (Willie Braziel vs his old school) and wins by 8. CH has now lost 4 out of 5 with Spring Lake Park and a trip to Cooper next Wed looming. I'm looking forward to that game, not just because of Rodney Williams Jr (which is always a treat), but also to see the Hylanders soph G Jacob Thomas who's putting up 23.1 a night.
  • Wayzata continues to roll with a win at Hill-Murray. I'll enjoy seeing them next Saturday vs St. Paul Central. Tonka comes in to play them on Friday.
  • Braham hangs on for a tough home win over CHOF. The Lions return home tomorrow for a tough one with Brooklyn Center as they finish the most difficult stretch of their schedule. Nice article in the Star Tribune about BC coach Ross Ihry making his kids hit the books.

  1. The word is traveling just as fast as the 3's are dropping. Scott Theisen of the Champlin Park Rebels is lightning it up from the arch! The Jr sharp shooter is on a roll. In his last 2 games the Jr has hit 20 of 29 threes and averaged 33 points. Having seen his last two games, some of these 3's should have been counted as 4's! His latest barrage has moved him within 1 point in total points for the team for the season. He is currently the #1 three point shooter in the Northwest Suburban League and shooting 90% from free throw line and averaging 12 points a game. The buzz at the Elk River game in which he had eleven 3's, was he tied the Minnesota State High School record! More importantly, he has helped bring the Rebels up to 3rd place in the league. The team only trails Osseo and Maple Grove in the league, having lost to them both. The Rebels hit the floor again on Friday at home against Andover in which a win would bring their record to 7-7.

  2. Thanks for repeating all that and the additions. I've got the Osseo/CP game on tape and will be taping the Andover game.

Its 1 thing to get 9 3s vs a bad team like Centennial (who I'll tape tomorrow night vs Park Center) but I really can't believe the 11 against Elk River. Randy Klasen knows what he's doing, how that still happens is beyond me. Its the same issue as I have with how Kyle Noreen of MTS is guarded, you under no circumstances let these kids get their feet set.

Any further insight on what CP was doing to get him all these looks, he had done very little from beyond the arc this season until these 2 games.

  3. Theisen is simply getting more minutes. CP is playing without their Sr starting center Emeka Okafor (tweeked his knee a couple of games ago). Okafor is the teams leading scorer and with him in the game the team tends to over feed the post causing foolish turnovers. With him out they are playing small (starting 3 guards). This type of line up has allowed them to keep the floor wide and rotate the ball back to Theisen. He does not start but plays quality minutes and is very productive when he plays. He scores in bunches and when he gets going his teammates make it their business to find him. He has a very crafty way of disappearing in a set and then reappearing wide open. In the Elk River game, Duberry and Witt (7 combined assists) consistently made sure he got the ball in great situations. I figured that Klasen would make a defensive adjustment, he never did.
